We're closing out the Month of Sharks with a (soon-to-be?) classic—Shark Night. Six college students head to a swamp lake house for a weekend of fun, only to have their good times rudely interrupted by some very 'cock blocky' sharks. There are shark movies and there are shark movies. Ninja vs Shark (Japan, 2023) is definitely the former - a bonkers Power Rangers-y shark flick that gets derailed by tone deaf plotlines and an irredeemable protagonist. Also, two folk horror flicks drop this week: the somber Starve Acre (United Kingdom, 2024) on Shudder and the part-Japanese, part-found footage Bloat (France, United States & Japan, 2025) on VOD and limited theaters.

To bring the holiday of Sharktoberfest to a close, Dustin and Logan are taking it upon themselves to rank every shark movie they have watched for this podcast. It's a tall order, especially since they both have bad memories and seem to be bad at counting. But they do it, gosh darn it! Join them for one final dip into shark infested waters to determine what are the quintessential films of Sharktoberfest!
The one in which Lan questions the validity of the entire premise of the podcast - to talk pedantically about concepts that don't really quite apply to horror movies. I mean... you can't prove that shark's not a feminist, Lan. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode we discuss having ciabatta bread for the first time, how the greatest comedy bit ever performed was by a shark, admitting to pimp my riding a shark, the quintessential monkey bar scene, having to deliver the line “come to mama” as an actor, water shoes aka the ultimate boner killer, singing and dancing at the sight of your work in smitherenes and SO MUCH MORE!!!
In this episode we discuss our never ending saga with terrible hairlines, Liv's fairytale trip to the farm, how hot Maddy looks in her new movie, the prospect of us doing the apple dance, the mystery of Thomas Jane, thinking the same was Samu, how terrifying the majesty of the ocean is, the rules of parole for a shark wrangler, catios for humans, the physics of the shark platform in the Austin Powers lab and SO MUCH MORE!!!
YOU DON'T NEED TO GO TO AMITY ISLAND FOR A SHARK MASSACRE!! IN FACT, YOU DON'T EVEN NEED A SHARK!! It's easy to recognize a Jaws knock-off when it revolves around a shark eating people, but what about all of those movies without sharks that lift scenes and ideas from Steven Spielberg's film and Peter Benchley's novel? Well, around here we call those movies “Jaws, Minus the Shark” movies and they make up a surprisingly versatile and eclectic little subgenre, one full of Brodys, Quints, and inordinately sexy Hoopers. Join Gabe and Ann-Marie Taylor – returning to Genre Grinder for the first time since 2020's Bad Shark Movies episode – as we explore what defines a Jaws, Minus the Shark movie and look at four such films: Michael Anderson's Orca (aka: Orca: The Killer Whale, 1977), Lewis Teague's Alligator (1980), Dick Maas' The Lift (Dutch: De Lift, 1983), and Christophe Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf (French: Le Pacte des loups, 2001). Note: There's something going on with my mic during this recording that makes me sound a little weird. Unfortunately, I didn't notice until I was editing. Apologies. 00:00 – Intro 10:48 – Orca (and the unfortunate truth of killer whales in captivity) 50:08 – Alligator 1:10:32 – The Lift 1:33:50 – Brotherhood of the Wolf 2:02:42 – Outro If you are in a position to make the world a better place, please consider the following fundraisers: Justice for Sonya Massey: https://www.gofundme.com/f/justice-for-sonya-massey Palestine Children's Relief Fund: https://pcrf1.app.neoncrm.com/forms/gaza-relief Anera Gaza Aid: https://www.anera.org/where-we-work/palestine/gaza/ Donations 4 Abortions (state by state abortion funds): https://donations4abortion.com/

Since Jaws scared us out of the water in 1975, shark movies have been a standard creature feature concept re-visited repeatedly, with varying degrees of success. These movies strike a primal fear in us, portraying a terrifying natural predator in their world- a setting where humans are somewhat helpless and not in control. For these reasons, there will always be new shark movies to make us afraid to go in the water. Jerry and Matt pick their choices for second best shark movie with Matt selecting The Reef, from 2010 and Jerry going with The Shallows, from 2016. These films are very different in their approach to the material, but both effective at what they do.

Send us a Text Message."Jaws," directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1975, is a suspenseful thriller about a massive great white shark terrorizing a small beach town. As the body count rises, a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and a grizzled fisherman team up to hunt the deadly predator, leading to an epic and terrifying confrontation. Though Jaws is an exciting film, the process leading up to its creation was just as tense and full of suspense for everyone involved.
