World War, round one. I want to live through this. If I can't be the guy behind the machine gun, let's see. Rifle. BAR's too heavy. SMLE. ten rounds trumps five, and can be, with practice, fired fast. Sights not as good as the Mk IV, but by the time we get to wwii, there are other options. Hand gun: good old 1911. Subgun -- was the Thompson available yet? Shotgun: not expert at all, but a 12 gauge pump with a big bayonet seems like a good thing to have on hand. Trench Broom. I think I'd also want a big old Bowie style knife as well. World War, round two, the rematch. handgun. More good options by then, but I think I'll stick with the 1911, this time in A1 configuration. Rifle, Garand, seeing as I probably couldn't get a Sturmgewehr. Subgun -- "Grease Gun" .45. Shotgun -- whatever 12 gauge pump is available, bayonet not needed, as we're not doing trench warfare. Big Bowie knife again -- too useful, less likely to be used in combat. Alternate history what if: What if low residue smokeless powder had been developed and introduced 50 years earlier, in the 1840s instead of the 1890s. Would we have seen early introduction of auto loading firearms, or would revolvers and manual repeaters continue to dominate into the 20th century? I suspect "yes, eventually, but not an immediate slamdunk." It would have made the US Civil War interesting. —-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Russell: Hi gents, There is one movie where the gun mistakes bother me so badly. It's the movie Standoff staring Laurence Fishburne and Thomas Jane. There is a scene where they discuss the attributes of each other's weapon. Fishburne's character brags about being armed with a 45. The gun is a Beretta 92! Jane's character is armed with a single shot shotgun in 20ga. Which Fishburne's character says isn't very powerful and has no range. Funny… The majority of the movie takes place in a house. Even worse this “20ga” is being loaded with RED shells. This scene ruined the entire movie for me. If they would have left out or changed the dialogue about the guns. Would have been a totally decent enough movie. Keep the shows coming, Russell —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Keith: Was watching The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Takes place in the Civil War. Lots of metallic cartridge guns. Not even hiding it. Tuco shoots from the bathtub. Not going to do that with black powder. Also, Blondie unloaded Tuco's gun before the showdown. The Army has Gatling guns. I think they were 45/70s. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener David: WW1 Loadout: I figure the best way is to split these over multiple emails. So sorry if that makes for a ton of reading! I am assuming logistics for all the crazy calibers are all solved. My main rifle is an M1917 Enfield, officially the "United States Rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917". Guess the guys got paid by the character to name stuff back then. For a carbine-ish choice, I am picking the Short Magazine fed Lee Enfield Mark 3. That just seems like a super handy gun to have inside cramped trenches. My shotgun is an M1897 trench gun with a sword bayonet. If the buckshot doesn't do the trick, I get spear practice (you know, as a little treat.) The machine gun splits into light and heavy. For light, I am picking the Madsen light machine gun and the Gatling gun gets the nod for heavy work. My pistol choice is nothing fancy, the P08 Luger, WW2 Loadout: Here is my idea for the WW2 load out.Same as before, magic logistics mean plenty of parts and ammo. My WW2 rifle is the M1941 Johnson rifle. Mainly because the Garand is too heavy for anyone to choose on purpose to schlep around. I am swapping a submachine gun for the carbine. That would be the PPSh-41 because I am achieving peace through overwhelming rate of fire. My shotgun is the Browning Auto 5. It's WW2, why are we racking slides like unwashed peasants? Machine gun again gets split into light and heavy. Light this time is the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, Heavy duty goes to the venerable M2 Browning because to Hell with you and whatever you are hiding behind! My sidearm choice is the Roth-Steyr M1907. It has more rounds than the 1911 and P38, it gets bonus points for looking weird also! (We have the rest of your emails David, but we want to save them for a future show when we have more entries!) —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Xander– WWII loadout: USS Nimitz (in honor of December 7) Or: Liberator pistol, Mauser C96 pistol, Mauser Karabiner rifle Wrap Up: Don't forget to shop Brownells using our affiliate link! Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2001 film "61*." They introduce the film (1:10), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film, with a new metaphor (5:51). In Amount of Baseball (14:41), they discuss the use of actual Mark McGwire footage, the strength of this tool throughout, and the impact of the authenticity. There is a player comp. Baseball Accuracy (20:39) starts off with discussion of Billy Crystal as Mantle's friend and "Rain Man" on set, and then delves into the history, talking about Ford Frick, Fay Vincent, and the asterisk itself, Roger Maris and Babe Ruth plate appearances, Maris and Mantle's relationship with the press, Pascual or Ramos, the imbalanced AL/NL in 1961, Babe Ruth breaking Ned Williamson's record, Maris trade rumors, Mantle running to first in three seconds, Joe DiMaggio Jerk-o-meter, Moose Skowron, Elston Howard, Billy Martin escapades, Maris signing an X on a ball, Rogers Hornsby, Casey Stengel and Mantle, the slick nickname, Mantle's arm injury, Hoyt Wilhelm and Tom Candiotti. Storytelling (54:16) considers everything added by the inclusion of the McGwire framing device, the function of Claire Ruth and Pat Maris in the story, the opening day scene, and the handling of exposition. There are a few small instances of Shakespearing. The scouts discuss the nuanced depiction of male friendship, the character of the media, the character of Bob Cerv, and the cinematography and lighting. The Score Tool (1:24:53) discusses the main theme, the volume of the score, and songs by The Ventures, Bobby Darin, and the Shirelles. Why TF is there a Lyle Lovett song? Acting (1:31:20) pretty much worships Barry Pepper, Thomas Jane, Bruce McGill, Michael Nouri, Richard Masur, Peter Jacobson, Seymour Cassel, Chris Bauer, Anthony Michael Hall, Christopher McDonald and Joe Grifasi, plus the rest of the ensemble. Delightfulness of Catcher (1:51:17) considers 17% of Yogi Berra and not enough Elston Howard. Delightfulness of Announcer (1:52:44) revels in both the accuracy and the high delight of the depictions of Phil Rizzuto, with all of his Rizzuto catchphrases and digressions, and Mel Allen trying to reign him in. Ellen has a (Rizzuto-esque?) digression into a comparison with "Eight Men Out." In Lack of Misogyny (1:59:51), they discuss Mantle's womanizing, and how it's tempered with Maris's point of view, consideration of Pat's perspective, and the existence of female fans. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (2:04:31), Six Degrees of Baseball (2:07:28), Favorite Moment (2:08:09) Least Favorite Moment (2:11:04), Scene We Would Have Liked to See (2:12:52), Dreamiest Player (2:15:49), Favorite Performance (2:16:30), and Next Time (2:19:05). Recorded live from the floor of New York Comic Con 2025, Jace sits down with actor and comic creator Thomas Jane to talk about his latest Comixology Originals series, The Lycan. Known for his work in The Punisher, The Expanse, and Grey Matter, Jane dives into his passion for comics and storytelling, describing The Lycan as a gothic romance with werewolves set in 1797—a dark, atmospheric tale blending period drama, wartime tension, and supernatural horror. Drawing inspiration from films like Nosferatu and Brotherhood of the Wolf, the series follows a group of stranded hunters who strike a desperate deal on an isolated British isle, leading to chaos, blood, and unexpected twists. Jane discusses the advantages of digital storytelling through Comixology's panel-by-panel reading experience, the excitement of eventually collecting the full story in print, and the parallels between his work as an actor and as a writer shaping emotion and pacing. The conversation captures the infectious energy of NYCC as Jane reflects on connecting with fans, celebrating creativity, and keeping the love of comics alive through every medium.
In this DC Spotlight episode, Jace and Rocky dive into another packed week of DC Comics, following Jace's return from New York Comic Con 2025 with fresh energy and insights. The conversation opens with how the current wave of DC K.O. tie-ins is enriching the main event without feeling obligatory, setting the tone for a week that balances emotional depth with big superhero spectacle. The guys unpack how Green Arrow #29 anchors the chaos in grounded, heartfelt storytelling, while Harley Quinn #55 leans into its sharp humor and fast pacing for longtime fans. They explore Absolute Wonder Woman #13 as a bold, introspective chapter that pushes themes of compassion and identity and speculate on just what the titular PRICE refers to. THe guys praise Green Lantern #28 for juggling multiple character arcs with ease though Jace felt the set-up issue was much more compelling than Rocky did. The finale of Green Lantern: Dark #7 earns extra discussion as they debate whether its emotional clarity redeems a series that's divided readers, while Detective Comics #1102 gets unanimous acclaim for putting the “detective” back in Detective Comics through gritty espionage-style art and high-stakes tension. From there they look at Justice League Unlimited #12, a standout DC K.O. tie-in that surprises with strong character beats for Power Girl, Aquaman, and Guy Gardner, and The Flash #26, where Mark Waid and Christopher Cantwell steer the tone back toward classic heroics even as Darkseid's reach expands across time itself. Immortal Legend: Batman #3 offers an experimental, puzzle-driven story that sparks mixed reactions but earns respect for ambition, while the Superman corner of the line dominates the week—especially Superman #31, a Lois and Lara-focused triumph that ties mythic revelation to personal courage, punctuated by Joshua Williamson's perfect handle on Superboy Prime. The guys bothed loved Superman #31, calling it the ideal blend of heart, history, and high concept. They close by highlighting the new DC Finest: Crisis on Infinite Earths collection, a Swamp Thing retrospective, Teen Titans: Starfire's YA trade, and Preacher Absolute Vol. 3, plus tease a slate of NYCC interviews featuring Bear Walker, Dean Haspiel, Cullen Bunn, Thomas Jane, and more—an energetic, discussion of everything DC is doing right.
Hello everyone! Anders Holmes is here with another solo episode where he reviews Frank Darabont's The Mist, adapted from the short story written by Stephen King.As it is spooky season (October aka Scary Movie Month) and Halloween is on the way, Anders Holmes will be talking about some of his favourite horror films in these solo Anders Reviews episodes. Horrors film that are some of his favourites, films that have made a big impression on him and films that people should check out. Whether they be fans of the genre or not.In this episode, Anders reviews The Mist directed by Frank Darabont and based off the Stephen King short story featured in his book: Skeleton Crew. The Mist was released in 2007 and it capped off Frank Darabont's un-official Stephen King trilogy. He had previously written and directed two beloved pieces of cinema: The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Both adapted from Stephen King's short stories. Darabont is no stranger to the world of horror and had written A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 3: The Dream Warriors. His work with Stephen King started back when he was 20 years old when he adapted a short story of his. This was part of Stephen King's Dollar Deal programme, where aspiring filmmakers could adapt and buy the rights to one of his short stories for a dollar. This was discontinued a few years ago. The Mist stars Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden and Andre Braugher. A group of people are trapped in a supermarket when a strange mist engulfs the town after a big thunderstorm. Their troubles do not end there as Lovecraftian and cosmic monsters come out of the mist and attack them. In the world of social media, misinformation and also living in a Covid-19 world, The Mist is a perfect film for our fragile times. It wonderfully reflects the divisive world of today, just as it did back in 2007 when it reflected the post 9/11 atmosphere and the Bush Era in America. A frightening and intense social-political horror reminiscent of the work created by Night of the Living Dead filmmaker: George A Romero. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more solo episodes from Anders during this year's spooky season. Stay tuned for our upcoming Fascism on Film episode on The Marriage of Maria Braun. Also do listen to our Robert Redford Special.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work soon in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film will be released in select cinemas in the US on October 17th and in Finland on November 5th. You can read a review about the film here on the Fangoria website.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Follow us on our Instagram page. Also check us out on Letterboxd too!AndersAdam Hosted on Acast. Read transcriptWelcome comic book crusaders and button-mashing vigilantes to another skull-crushing edition of Play Comics! This week we're strapping on our tactical vest, loading up our favorite dual-wielded firearms, and diving headfirst into the wonderfully violent world of The Punisher from 2005 – a game that dared to ask the important question: “What if we took Thomas Jane's already pretty intense Frank Castle and gave him access to every torture device known to humanity?” This PlayStation 2 and Xbox gem emerged from the blood-soaked minds at Volition (yes, the same folks who would later give us Saints Row) and decided that your typical comic book game needed more creative interrogation techniques and fewer moral boundaries. We're talking about a game so gloriously brutal that it nearly earned an Adults Only rating before getting the black-and-white censorship treatment that somehow made watching a guy get fed to piranhas even more artistic. Joining us for this revenge-fueled rampage is the incomparable Alex Squires from The StarWell Foundation and Opinions May Vary, a person who knows a thing or two about giving comic book villains interesting character development – though probably with fewer wood chippers involved than Frank Castle prefers. Together, we'll explore whether this 2005 digital bloodbath successfully captured the essence of Marvel's most morally questionable “hero,” or if it left us feeling like we'd been interrogated by the wrong end of a drill press. So grab your favorite non-lethal beverage, practice your best intimidating one-liners, and prepare to discover if this early PlayStation 2 era adaptation proved that sometimes the best way to honor a comic book character is to let them be exactly as unhinged as they were meant to be. Will we declare this game worthy of the Punisher skull, or will it get tossed off a building faster than a Gnucci crime family lieutenant? Time to find out! Learn such things as: What happens when power tools are used for evil? Are black and white things just inherently less violent? When are Gun and Knife a super power? And so much more! Deep Blue Sea is a 1999 sci-fi monster movie directed by Renny Harlin, starring Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, and Samuel L. Jackson. This film may have been the first American big-budget shark movie to hit theaters since Jaws: The Revenge. Deep Blue Sea however decided to splice science-fiction into something that as much resembles Alien, or Thing from Another World. The science is vague enough to hold together with confident lines that try real hard... and OK some of the plot could be tighter. This is a 1950s B-movie plot, no doubt, but we think they do an admirable job of giving you enough MovieScience™ to work with, some very entertaining characters, great scenes and plenty of blood as a reward for going along.Find and reach out to Matt on:Letterboxd @MovieMattSiroisBluesky @MovieMattSirois.bsky.socialFacebook Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.Follow who we follow: Once Upon a Geek and TheFade Out Podcast

It's Die Hard underwater…with sharks! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, we're diving headfirst into one of the wettest, wildest, and wackiest Die Hard riffs of the late '90s: DEEP BLUE SEA (1999), directed by none other than Renny Harlin! We're joined by special guest Justin LaLiberty - director of operations for Vinegar Syndrome and a key figure in the ongoing physical media renaissance - to talk shark attacks, elevator shafts, and Samuel L. Jackson's iconic “interrupted monologue” moment! From the unmistakable DIE HARD FRANCHISE DNA, to the undersea siege structure and classic containment premise, we trace just how much Deep Blue Sea swims in McClane-infested waters! We also discuss the unusual, uneven career of Thomas Jane, the effervescent magic of LL Cool J, and that bizarre Ronny Cox “cameo”! It's DIE HARD in an underwater lab full of brain-enhanced sharks, and it might just be the most fun you can have in a Renny Harlin flick that isn't Die Hard 2!DEEP BLUE SEA trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSz9MDN-iacAt the time of release, DEEP BLUE SEA is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, Fandango and all the usual platforms!Click here to subscribe to our Patreon feed 48 HOURS OF BUDDY MOVIES! Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, and starring Thomas Jane, John Travolta, Rebecca Romijn, and a large Russian hitman, The Punisher earns its R-rating and has built up a loyal cult following. Were there any unique challenges in translating a concept that started with Thomas and David James Kelly into something that fit the comics medium?Characters & ThemesHorror often reflects deeper themes—survival, fear of the unknown, or even human nature itself. What themes are at play in The Lycan*, and how do they set it apart from other werewolf stories?*Art & Visual StorytellingDiego Yapur's art is stunning—his work captures both action and atmosphere beautifully. How did he get involved, and what made him the perfect fit to help define the visual identity of this series?Publishing & Future PlansThomas, you've now stepped into the role of editor. How has that experience been for you, and has it changed how you approach storytelling? This book has been years in the making, with setbacks and new opportunities along the way. Now that it's finally releasing through Comixology Originals, what excites you most about how readers will experience The Lycan*?Bonus Fun Question: If you were trapped in a castle with a werewolf for one night and could only bring three items to help you survive, what would they be?
In 2004 Marvel took another shot at making a Punisher live action adaptation after the success of Spider-Man, X-Men & Daredevil (I guess?), the Thomas Jane in the lead role. Also acting as his Year One original story it pits him against John Travolta and a family of mobsters who had his entire extended family un-alived (that's for YouTube censorship) after Frank Castle acted out a truely bizarre undercover pantomime drug deal. It's fairly melodramatic and drawn out but it does boast one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. Here is an episode of Cinema Trip Reviews that I was a guest on. Last year we covered the 2004 Punisher movie starring Thomas Jane for it's 20th anniversary. I figured it was a good time to upload it since Daredevil Born Again is bringing back their Punisher.
They couldn't let go. Thomas Jane and Mike Carey resurrect The Lycan, a comics project languishing for over fifteen years. Jane and screenwriter David James Kelly initiated the concept and hired Carey to write the script. An artist was also hired. That artist disappeared. An opportunity arose years later, and a new artist, Diego Yapur, finally materialized this ruthless tale of adventure and horror. The North Sea. 1797. A ship shatters on the shore of a Scottish isle. The hunters within spill upon the sand, encountering a Red Coat regiment and a Convent-turned-Fortress. The three factions mistrust each other but must find unity if they're to defend themselves from a hirsute plague. The Lycan recalls the gnarliest stories in the best comic book anthologies: Twisted Tales, Creepy, Vault of Horror, etc. Yet, it's given the space that writers like Bruce Jones were never afforded. Thomas Jane and Mike Carey are confident storytellers who've spent a lifetime consuming this beautiful medium and know they can let the title and the many engaging characters below it do the work. The beast is coming, but in The Lycan #1, the horror explored is utterly, painfully human. With the French Revolution on the horizon, paranoia grips everyone, and the faith carried by pirates, soldiers, and nuns is challenged and found fractured. How can they possibly fight their doggie dinner destiny? The Lycan allows our podcast conversation with Thomas Jane and Mike Carey to travel into various caves and crannies. We dig into their passion for the comic book medium and how it differs from movies (The Punisher) and novels (The Girl With All The Gifts). We discuss the comic's complicated origin and the challenge of collaboration, as well as the powerful, relatable themes at this book's center. Fear, paranoia, and faith - who needs a werewolf to do you in? The Lycan #1 is now available on ComiXology but will eventually see physical release through Ablaze.
