In this second half of our conversation, Sterling dives deeper into his run on Supergirl alongside artist Jamal Igle. He shares behind-the-scenes stories about crafting Kara's voice, working hand-in-glove with Igle to re-define her place in the DC Universe, and why their collaboration remains one of the character's most beloved eras.Sterling opens up about the challenges of balancing editorial direction with his and Jamal's creative instincts, and how they fought to give Kara her own identity separate from Superman. From comics, we shift back to television as Sterling talks about his time writing for The Flash on The CW.He expands on his contributions to the ambitious Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, explaining the difficulties of squeezing the vast scope of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez's 1985 comic series into a handful of TV hours. Sterling reveals which classic comic beats he tried to sneak into the script.Sterling also discusses his most recent creative venture: filmmaking. His short film Just the Janitor has begun its run on the festival circuit and at comic conventions, and he talks candidly about making the leap from comics and TV to directing this riveting action film. He shares the story behind the film, the lessons he's learning as a first-time filmmaker, and why he believes conventions are the perfect place for genre fans to discover it. This continuation showcases Sterling Gates as a storyteller constantly moving between mediums, bringing the same passion to a 22-page comic, a TV superhero epic, or a low-budget short action film.

The Film School Janitors aren't slouches when it comes to watching the biggest Netflix releases (counting this one, they have reviewed nine of the top ten streamed original films). Maybe not all of the Janitors watched KPOP DEMON HUNTERS, but Jay has watched it more than enough for the rest of them (Sean also saw it). This is their review, as if you even cared!

Episode 300! thank's so much. Emmy, Peabody, and Writers' Guild of America Award winning writer/producer Mike Scully has written many forms of comedy: animation, single-cam, multi-cam, hidden-cam, award shows, and live performance. After seven years of writing for shows you've never heard of, he joined The Simpsons writing staff as a producer in 1993. He was promoted to showrunner in 1997 for Seasons 9 thru 12 (considered the four most consecutive seasons of the show) and co-wrote and co-produced The Simpsons Movie, released in 2007. He was a consulting producer on the show until 2021 and recently wrote a new episode. Mike also served as writer/producer on the Emmy-winning Everybody Loves Raymond, as well as Parks & Recreation, starring Amy Poehler. (He also appeared on the show several times as a disgruntled citizen asking stupid questions at town meetings.) He was a writer/producer on the critically acclaimed NBC series “The Carmichael Show” starring comedian Jerrod Carmichael. He co-created (with wife Julie Thacker-Scully & Amy Poehler) the animated Fox/Hulu show Duncanville starring Poehler, Ty Burrell, and Rashida Jones, which ran three seasons. He also co-created some quickly cancelled shows such as “The Pitts”, “Complete Savages”, and an animated version of Napoleon Dynamite.” He and Julie wrote the pilot for the ABC/Hulu show Shifting Gears. He is a Consulting Producer on the upcoming second season of the Netflix series, A Man On The Inside starring Ted Danson. He has written jokes for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler when they hosted the Golden Globes and for their current live Restless Leg tour. In 1998, he organized writing staffs of all the Fox animated shows to win Writers Guild of America union coverage for the writers, who had previously been underpaid and without healthcare and pension contributions, unlike their live action counterparts. He has five daughters who provide him a never-ending financial reason to keep working. We chat about the Simpsons and being a show runner, leadership style and empowerment, moving to LA, his many ‘odd' jobs, cancelled shows and rejection, false promises, Everybody loves Raymond, creating shows, art vs the business, doing comedy after Robin Williams, point of view, working on Parks and Recreation, moving forward plus much more! The Film School Janitors will self-destruct in five seconds! Well, at least it always feels that way. The Janitors discuss MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING, as well as the other films in the M:I franchise, which are only M:I films. No HOBBS & SHAW-type spinoffs around these parts. (At least not yet...?) Can you believe this is the first M:I film they've reviewed?!
Now on Netflix, HAVOC is exactly what you want HAVOC to be. It's an action-fueled thrill ride, and it has nothing to do with HVAC. The Film School Janitors watched the movie and reviewed it, and for the umpteenth time... the Janitors have nothing to do with HVAC either! So stop reporting heating and cooling problems to them!
We often think about "making things make sense" in worldbuilding and building internal consistency, scientific realism, and other logic-based considerations into our fiction -- But what happens when your worldbuilding principle is “What would be awesome?" Jim C. Hines, who embraced this principle for a forthcoming book, joins us to explore the possibilities! The Rule of Cool, credit to, is defined thusly: "The limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief for a given element is directly proportional to its awesomeness." In other words, if it's cool enough, you can get away with it. This often applies to sci-fi tech and fantasy magic. Let's be real, things like faster-than-light travel, lightsabers, and starfighters will always be "rule of cool", in one way or another (so far as we currently understand physics), and magic doesn't have to be something you break down and quantify and explain perfectly. So what can we play with? And where do those decisions intersect with narrative tone, genre standards, and reader expectations? [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Jim C. Hines is the author of the Magic ex Libris series, the Princess series of fairy tale retellings, the humorous Goblin Quest trilogy, and the Fable Legends tie-in Blood of Heroes. He also won the 2012 Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer. His latest novel is Terminal Peace, book three in the humorous science fiction Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse trilogy. He lives in mid-Michigan with his family.
