[Recorded 20 November 2019] Based upon anthropological fieldwork conducted in the Koenji neighbourhood of Tokyo, I examine the lives of street-based amateur musicians newly arrived in the metropolis. In many cases, initial aspirations of progress give way to a realisation that the music industry is deaf to their efforts. They quickly slip into a pattern of irregular work, joining huge numbers of financially insecure and opportunity-poor young people. Prioritising music has put them on the margins of popular discourses of life trajectories in Japan, even though their lived experiences are commonplace to many. While scholarship on “precarity” and the reverberations of “gap society” is plentiful, much less attention has been given to how people respond to these circumstances. In this talk I explore how the musicians carve out new trajectories for themselves by readdressing the role that music plays in their lives, and how their music practices negotiate the space left by diminished hope. That a life in music can still exist despite odds stacked against it is, perhaps, indicative that young people are fast developing the skills and capacities to negotiate the vicissitudes of modern life.

On this episode, join me as we scratch the surface of the Tokyo indie rock scene.  I sat down with Kento for a blitzkrieg-paced bop of an episode.  I dove deep into his musical inspirations, his experience living and  bringing anarchy in the uk and finally coming full circle back to the Tokyo Indie underground.   Kento's come-as-you-are demeanor reflects his musical journey which is still growing.  Although the Tokyo scene has a clear and present division within their community, it undoubtedly shares the same unknown pleasures for rock and roll.   Case in point, Kento and I try to figure out two highly influential neighborhoods of Koenji and Shimokitazawa:  great outlets for starving artists yet they have completely different music vibes.   Kento’s story can be very familiar or just new noise but it’s definitely not the path of the norm in Japan.  Hope you enjoy!   PS. This week Simon and Martina checked out a nearby neighbourhood, Koenji, and they discovered a grungy, seedier - but amazing - side to Japan. They found a bar that had a lot of penis statues on the outside, but when they went inside they had the best night ever! Simon says it was his favourite night in Tokyo so far. It was about the size of a big walk-in closet (so, tiny). The lady running it was 81 years old and the lady serving them was 87 years old. They drank a lot with the elderly locals, who were nailing life. They ended up busting out an impromptu sing-along of some old-school songs with everyone in the bar. They had incredibly delicious food, and it was sooo cheap. This place wasn't on a map, and there was no info online. The duo recommend, when you travel, to go exploring and find places that aren't necessarily the most popular online, or the most highly recommended; that's when you have the most memorable experiences.

We sit down to discuss various topics around the popularization of EDM, the notion of performance within electronic music, the effectiveness of humour as a strategy of critique.
