Episode 164 Chapter 25, Electronic Music in Japan and The Asia-Pacific. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. If you are a business leader in the Japanese market this conversation will provide some invaluable insights. In the episode Timothy explains the concept of strategic leadership and outlines the five leadership archetypes that are required at the different stages of an organization's growth. In this episode you will hear:How Timothy pivoted from designing apparel to marketingTimothy's approach to identifying essential customer experience touch pointsWhat a social listening exercise is and how it can help your companyWhy last impressions can be more important than first impressionsAbout strategic leadership and the five leadership archetypesThe different skill sets required for each of the leadership archetypesAbout Timothy:Timothy Connor is a bilingual and bicultural longtime resident of Tokyo Japan. He has 25 years of experience in consumer related businesses, both B2B2C and B2C. During this time, he has developed a deep understanding of the Japanese market, its consumers, and the unique aspects of doing business in Japan, where trust relationships are essential. As CEO of Synnovate, he develops road maps to growth, leads the implementation, and works synergistically with the local master distributor or franchisor to achieve growth. He uses his bilingual and bicultural expertise to liaise and create a trust relationship with the distributors and partners to then innovate in products, sales and marketing channels, and activation promotional activities. As a non-Japanese, he can often see opportunities that the Japanese partners cannot and has more flexibility than a Japanese partner to do things outside the box. Marketing to Japanese consumers requires a highly developed customer experience and attention to the finest details of quality, an aspect sometimes overlooked by foreign brands.Previously Managing Director in charge of corporate development and the marketing service business group of an American owned firm. His role was to find new business opportunities, devise the market strategy for sales and distribution partners, develop the organization, and subsequently run the new business. These experiences motivated him to develop the concept of strategic leadership and the five “types” of leadership that can become necessary in the growth journey of any business.Connect with Timothy:Website: https://www.synnovate.jp/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/timothyconnor/Connect with David Sweet:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drdavidsweet/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/focuscorejp Facebook: :https://www.facebook.com/focuscoreasiaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/focuscorejp/ Website: https://www.japan.focuscoregroup.com/ “Doin' the Uptown Lowdown,” used by permission of Christopher Davis-Shannon. The Emerging Queendom book is a creative collaboration between Maria, a fiber artist and cross stitch designer from Tallinn (Estonia) and Paige, a writer and creativity coach from Tokyo (Japan). Perfect for fans of fantasy and fiber arts alike, The Emerging Queendom is a celebration of strength, healing, and feminine powers. It weaves together thirteen magical stories rooted in symbols and folklore accompanied by thirteen intricate cross stitch designs. Each story also features an original illustration, created by four female artists from around the world. The stories in The Emerging Queendom showcase unique female archetypes and their strengths. But the tales of an ancient curse, a heroine's journey, and the crumbling towers are just a canvas to embroider messages of love, resilience, finding your own path, and having the right circle of friends to support you along the way. Maria's stunning cross stitch designs add a visual depth to the narrative, making the reading experience even more immersive and enchanting. The Emerging Queendom is scheduled to be released in early December, 2024. Laurence Bouchard is a Tokyo based street photographer. Originally from the UK, Laurence moved to Tokyo in 2009 and this sealed his interest in photography forever as he navigated (and attempted to understand) this exciting, vibrant and eccentric new culture. Initially he was using just his iPhone for photography which led to Apple selecting him to represent Tokyo for their iPhone 7 campaign in 2017. After the iPhone 7 campaign Laurence invested in a Sony digital camera and now continues to shoot with both cameras interchangeably - continually adapting himself to new technologies and techniques that push forward his art in a way to escape the real world and exist in the moment. For Laurence, street photography is almost akin to playing a sport on one hand whilst meditating on the other. Many sports demand the ability to 'read' the game as a crucial skill and it's the same in street photography. Over the last few years Laurence has been particularly drawn to the abstract and surreal and his attempts to interpret and express this perspective have galvanized Laurence's focus on geometry in urban environments. In January 2016, 21 year-old Narumi Kurosaki, ex-girlfriend of 26 year-old Nicholas Zepta was exchanging messages discussing their relationship. The couple had recently had a messy break up because Narumi Narumi had just gotten accepted into an elite college in France on a scholarship and had to leave Tokyo Japan, where her and Nicholas were living. Narumi wanted to go out there and see what else life had to offer and tried to break it off with Nicholas. But unfortunately, Nicholas didn't take no for an answer. Nicholas would go on to send over 1000 messages to Narumi telling her she must obey his “conditions” in the relationship or else he's gonna break up with her, although they were already broken up and Narumi was currently moved on and in another relationship. Nicholas would even go on his daily motion account to post a video of him saying how Narumi had recently done some bad things to him that she was pay for. And gave her 2 weeks to obey his “conditions” before she would feel the “effects”. Narumi ignored all of Nik's messages until one day as she was walking home from her school in France, she noticed in the distance, Nicholas was getting out of a car and walking right towards her.  Learn more about your ad choices. Somna on The DJ Sessions On Location Sessions at ADE 2023 10/19/23   About Somna - In an ever-expanding global electronic music scene with new artists appearing every day, it takes nothing short of raw talent to stand out. As one of Canada's leading Trance artists, Somna took the #45 spot in the DJTOP100 (TrancePodium 2019) making him the highest Canadian within the top 100. His music can be found on the biggest trance labels in the world including Armada Music, Enhanced Music, Coldharbour Recordings, Garuda Music, Future Sound Of Egypt, AVA Recordings, Black Hole Recordings and Perfecto. One of few trance artists bypassing 200,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, Somna's music regularly finds itself on the playlists of Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, Gareth Emery, Cosmic Gate and more. Reaching beyond his talents of songwriting, Somna is also a highly sought-after remixer, having remixed for the likes of Markus Schulz, BT, Paul Oakenfold, Andy Moor, Menno de Jong and Lange. As a performing artist, Somna fuses together traditional mixing with current technologies in a way that creates an atmosphere for fans into a journey of what trance is truly about. His experiences with prior aliases over the years has led to performances at Global Gathering, Creamfields, Coloursfest, Eden (Ibiza), The Arches (Scotland), LoveFest (USA), and shows across Canada, UK, USA, Japan, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. As Somna, he has taken his music to the main stage at Dreamstate in Southern California, Colosseum in Jakarta (Indonesia), Womb in Tokyo (Japan) and events in Norway, Netherlands, Switzerland, Mexico, United States, United Kingdom and Canada. Just a peek into support from the world's top trance DJs includes regular premieres on universally popular podcasts such as A State Of Trance, Group Therapy, Corsten's Countdown, Global DJ Broadcast and more. Recognition from A-list DJs include Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, Paul Van Dyk, Gareth Emery, Andy Moor, TyDi, Lange, Cosmic Gate, Paul Oakenfold, Guiseppe Ottaviani, Heatbeat, Mark Sixma and many more. The abundance of support stands as a true testament to the quality of Somna's music. As a prolific multi-genre producer and engineer, his track alongside Andy Moor “One Thing About You” featuring Amy Kirkpatrick, reached #1 on Beatport and stayed in the top 10 for three weeks. Adding to Somna's Beatport success, “One Thing About You” won the 2015 award for the most streamed trance track on Beatport. 2015 and 2016 also saw multiple Somna releases reach the top 10 on Beatport, with tracks featuring the likes of Jennifer Rene & Michele C. To mark Lange Recordings' 200th release, Somna was invited to team up with Johnny Yono and Monoverse. The result was “Hijackers”, a triple threat labor of love which reached #3 on the Beatport charts. During these years, Somna also made two label debuts (Armada Captivating and Future Sound Of Egypt Excelsior) and joined the trance elite as he had the honor of mixing a 3 disc compilation alongside Andy Moor for AVA Recordings' 10 year anniversary. Coupled by a truly rare triple play on A State Of Trance (episode #791), 2016 was fantastic year for Somna. His success carried over into 2017 as Somna showed no signs of slowing down with the Canadian hitting 140,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and a yearly collected data showing a staggering 13.4 million plus minutes streamed for his music on the #1 streaming platform. 2018 was a powerhouse year for Somna with a new single on Armada's Captivating label, hitting the landmark 1 million streams for his single “Look Back” on Spotify and debut appearances in Jakarta (Indonesia), Oslo (Norway), Zurich (Switzerland) and Amsterdam (Netherlands). Somna's 2019 started on a high with a “Progressive Pick” winner on A State Of Trance and with “Razor”, signed to Armin Van Buuren's personal label Armind Recordings. 2019 also marked a debut on Gareth Emery's Garuda Recordings with two high energy singles as well as delivering remixes for Markus Schulz and Lange. Continuing upwards, Somna teamed up with HALIENE for “Secret” to critical acclaim, receiving triple plays on A State Of Trance and an official music video. On the performance front, Somna debuted in Mexico City as well as the prestigious Dreamstate festival main stage in Southern California where he treated fans to world exclusive sneak peeks of his forthcoming artist album. Closing the year with the landmark 300th release from AVA Recordings with his collaboration with Andy Moor, Somna cemented himself in the scene as one of the most exciting trance artists to emerge this decade. 2020 saw “Beside You” – Somna's debut artist album finally released on Black Hole Recordings' Magik Muzik imprint to critical acclaim. Capturing “album of the month” in Mixmag and topping the charts in a variety of countries, Somna painted a canvas of music that impacted fans from around the world. While the unfortunate events of the pandemic caused his album tour plans (USA, UK, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan) to get canceled, Somna took to new avenues to share his music. Finding his feet swiftly as a partner on the Twitch streaming platform, his channel has grown exponentially over 2020 with a dedicated community and fan base edging towards 10k followers. Combining his flair for humor, a catalog and production history spanning multiple genres, Somna's channel continues to innovate and connect fans to his music weekly. As the label manager, A&R and co-owner of AVA Recordings, Somna continues to make strides while playing an important role within the scene. His bi-monthly radio show entitled “Reanimate Music” broadcasts every first and third Wednesday on Digitally Imported (di.fm), the #1 online dance radio station in the world. With a promising outlook on 2021, Somna continues his artistic journey with a steady stream of music on the scene's best labels as well as reigniting his tour schedule with stops around the world.   About The DJ Sessions -   “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. When WOMB opened in 2000, Japan's nightlife scene was still in its infancy with a strict ban on dancing after midnight that made it almost impossible to run a regular nightclub. But over the past two decades, the revolutionary club has transformed the way people in Tokyo party. This is the story of how the club went from an idea born on the dancefloors of New York into one of Japan's most famous nightclubs. How a club that's been open for over 20 years, became a hotspot for international DJs and found a way to uplift local talent and survive through the pandemic.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2000, Briton Lucie Blackman went to Tokyo, Japan with her best friend. They planned to get jobs as nightclub hostesses for a few months, make enough money to pay off some debts, and have some savings left when they returned home. But they were unaware of what was lurking in the shadows. Lucie's disappearance set off a frantic search by her family and friends, and the evil they uncovered rocked an entire nation.
