With hardly any free time anymore, I've started cooking up vaporwave edits on the weekends to make the most of the few hours I get to myself. During the pandemic, I discovered Vaporwave while working from home and was instantly hooked by the often repetitive, chopped-and-screwed edits of obscure ‘80s and ‘90s tracks, which reminded me of the DJ Screw tapes I used to bump back in college—especially the random ‘80s rock or R&B songs that he would slip onto those tapes. I also dug the seemingly random Windows clipart aesthetic in much of the artwork. This tape might be a departure from my usual, but I only post bangers. These are all edits that I've done over the last year. The formula goes something like this: start with a pristine audio file, slow it down until it sounds "right", then experiment with different analog emulation plugins until you end up with something that could fit on a screw tape (“It's goin' down!”). Lastly, give the artwork a similar treatment, and you're all set. If you're interested in more examples of Vaporwave and its subgenres, check out Nightwave Plaza https://plaza.one/ which is basically all I listen to anymore besides other DJs' mixtapes. If you're new to DJ Screw and what I'm referencing, here's a perfect example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6jKtTVtvdw. On "Hot Takes" latest episode, we brought on world renowned city pop DJ and music critic Van Paugam! Van consented to go a few rounds with us and talk about his unique lived experiences, his opinions about various art and music, and of course to share with us his spiciest takes about future funk and vaporwave. Though he's slowed down as of late, Van Paugam has been DJing and writing about music for quite some time, and he is best known for helping bring attention to city pop music worldwide and for his scathing critique of the vaporwave scene in his article "The Rise & Fall of Vaporwave". In this episode, topics run the gamut from the electroclash movement, the concept of experiencing other people's nostalgia via the internet, and whether or not future funk or vaporwave music is truly marketable on a grand scale. Why do some people pour their heart and soul in to their work and others do not? How do chillwave and vaporwave relate to the 80's revival in pop music? Is the vaporwave scene just about making a buck? You're going to have to play the episode if you want to hear Van Paugam's hottest takes on the latest installment of "Hot Takes"!   "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Around 2010 I became somewhat obsessed with Japanese pop and ambient music of the 1980s - in particular the Yellow Magic Orchestra, the solo records of the members of the group: Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi and music by Akiko Yano, Yasuaki Shimizu and Hiroshi Yoshimura amongst many others. Last year I discovered that this was an enthusiasm shared with architectural historian, and very occasional pop music writer, Owen Hartherley who has since written an article partially on the topic: https://www.jencksfoundation.org/explore/text/japan-at-number-one-ryuichi-sakamoto-s-riot-in-lagos Although much of the episode is on the music itself, we also touch on the politics - particularly how these artists were influenced by and reacting to the culture of the 1960s New Left, during the extraordinary economic boom of the 1980s, and how some of these musicians reintegrated the memory of 20th century Japanese imperialism in Asia into their music. If you'd like to explore some of the music we discuss in the episode you can find an accompanying playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1eM8f2mq7vJYtYuTDq2EKW?si=7dd8d970fb8d4ad2 As well as tracks from the 80s, the playlist also includes some records from the folk rock era of the 1970s, as well as from Vaporwave and Future Funk genres - both of which were influenced by much of the 1980s work that Owen and I discuss. Unfortunately, there are plenty of fantastic records from this era that aren't currently available on the streaming services - including Akiko Yano's best work (especially the album Tadaima) Paradise of Replica by After Dinner, Ichiko Hashimoto's Beauty album, Miho Fujiwara's Heartbeat, Untotooku by Chiemi Manabe and the soundtracks to the animated films Akira and the Wings of Honnêamise amongst others. Do check those out too if you can - many of them are available on YouTube or to purchase from Bandcamp and other such outlets. Owen's article, 1980 in Parallax: Japan at Number One, Ryuichi Sakamoto's ‘Riot in Lagos': https://www.jencksfoundation.org/explore/text/japan-at-number-one-ryuichi-sakamoto-s-riot-in-lagos Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1eM8f2mq7vJYtYuTDq2EKW?si=7dd8d970fb8d4ad2
