POPULARITY
It's the largest movie industry in the world with the most new movies produced every year, and yet, neither of us have ever taken the time to sit and watch one. It was a glaring gap in our Top 10: Foreign Films episode, and we knew we had to make amends. So we found 10 highly-recommended movies spanning different genres, regions, and time periods in Indian cinema history. We were prepared for some foreign language movies but what we got can only be described as culture shock. We learned Bollywood is only a fraction of the industry, and some of these 10 aren't "Bollywood" at all. We learned some history of the country, people, and culture. We picked up on some major movie stars and different long running box office models. We even learned about how to play cricket and avoid taxes. Join us on this journey, and let us know what Indian films we should watch next! Before that, Dustin gives spoiler-free first impressions of Deadpool & Wolverine, Lisa Frankenstein, and Love Lies Bleeding. Jake shares thoughts on Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, A Quiet Place: Day One, and his wife pressured him into watching most of Grease. Hello, romantics! Your host Manish (@vertigay314) is at the halfway point of the Sports Romance miniseries. For the occasion, he invited his two cousins Vikrum and Kinjal to talk about the monumentally influential Bollywood epic LAGAAN. The 2001 film was the 3rd Indian nominated for the Best International Feature Oscar, and as of now the last. It stars superstar Aamir Khan as a farmer who leads a motley crew in a high-stakes game of cricket against the British in order to save their village. With a compelling love triangle, elegant filmmaking, and stirring music, LAGAAN is a classic of the 21st century and extremely entertaining two decades later.

Rachel Shelley is our first guest across the pond! You Might Know Her From The L Word, Deep State, Rogue, The Ghost Whisperer, Once Upon a Time…, Casualty, and Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. We talked to Rachel about playing Helena Peabody for five seasons on the OG L Word, navigating the twists and turns that her character took from cold heiress, to one of the crew, from prison to discovering during the filming of season six that it ultimately would become a murder mystery around Jenny Schecter. Plus we need someone to gift us the unaired spin-off, The Farm. All that plus respecting the ghost bible on The Ghost Whisperer, playing gay to a fedora-wearing Heather Graham in Gray Matters, and starring in the epic Bollywood film Lagaan that earned an Oscar nom for Best Foreign Language film. In this episode we watch the 2001 Bollywood epic Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, a nearly 4 hour-long modern classic about the game of cricket (among other things) and compare it to the cynical cash-grab about text messages, The Emoji Movie. We loved Lagaan and hated The Emoji Movie... but what else is new? We also do a deep dive trying to figure out which dictators the Minions helped, we talk about the Burger King XBOX game Sneak King, and talk about our favorite 3D movies. Get into it Kanines! Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, The 250 is a fortnightly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This week, the pair are joined by Babu Patel and Giovanna Rampazzo, with thanks to Siraj Zaidi and The Indian Film Festival of Ireland. This time, Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. During British rule, a small Indian village comes together to play a cricket match against the local British regiment. In a season without rain, the stakes are high. If the villagers win, they will be spared taxation for three years; if the villagers lose, they will have to pay triple tax. It is all to play for. At time of recording, it was ranked the 249th best movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
This week, we watch the acclaimed Bollywood epic about cricket, Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001), directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.
