Fratello On Air: The Curious Case Of Car Watches

Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we talk about car watches, a curious subgenre within our hobby. Sure, the automobile industry is massive and has an equally huge fan base, but collaborations between watch and car brands often misfire. This draws us into a conversation about what we think of when pairing our vehicles with a watch. Whether it's for driving or attending a related event, what works best?Yes, in this episode, we tackle a challenging topic. Or, for some of our readers and listeners, perhaps it isn't a consideration at all. Car watches have been a focal point since wristwatches were first created. Angled dials meant to help drivers tell time at a glance have been produced by many marques. Then, an obvious complication associated with cars and racing is the chronograph. This is the most common platform for pieces made for Formula One teams and other automotive brands. We find many of these too on the nose, with overt branding that may only appeal to an owner of a car from the related maker. So, what should we wear when driving our fun cars or when heading off to a get-together or race?HandgelenkskontrolleFolks, it's hot out there, so we kick off our show by talking about the oppressive heat and the need for more air conditioning. Then, we mention the World Cup and all the great stories we've seen about visitors enjoying fun restaurants and customs in America. Once again, the Scots have endeared themselves to the locals. Travel-wise, Balazs just returned from Los Angeles, where he organized a Chrono24 get-together with our friends from the Spirit of Time podcast. Nearly 60 people came together at a Pasadena brewery to share their passion for watches. Mike visited the Icons of Porsche: Sunstede Silverstone Edition event celebrating Porsche's 75th anniversary in the UK. It was an incredible showing of cars and car culture. It's also what led us to our main topic — car watches. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs is wearing one of the watches he took to California. It's none other than his prized Rolex GMT-Master 1675. Mike is still on a vintage chronograph kick and is wearing his Lemania-powered Meylan chronograph with a decimal scale.Car watchesCurrent and past horological catalogs are littered with car watches. You know, when a watch brand decides to sponsor a racing team or become the official partner of a prestigious luxury automaker. Very few are good, while most are tacky or overbranded. So, on the heels of the Porsche event, it got us thinking about the right pieces to wear when enjoying all things petrolhead. We both wholeheartedly agree that Heuer is the unequivocal leader for motorsport-related driving and race-inspired timepieces. However, it's the surprising Omega Speedmaster, in any form, that checks in as a no-nonsense racing-related model. This is despite its fame as a space watch.Other watches, including the Amida Digitrend, Omega Chronostop, and the Vacheron Constantin American 1921, arise as driver-focused pieces. Regarding newer ones, mechaquartz movements have helped inspire some attractive, robust models. The Bamford Mayfair 2.0 is a fun, brightly colored chronograph with an interchangeable case ready for any event. We close out with our ultimate "one and done" watch to wear for anything car-related. For Mike, the Heuer Carrera 2447 is pure perfection. Balazs has also chosen a Heuer, but he sees the Monaco as the ultimate car watch. Thanks for listening to today's episode! As always, feel free to let us know if you have topics for future episodes.

A quiet evening hike through Hueston Woods State Park in Ohio left Olivia with more questions than answers. While exploring the Big Woods Trail near sunset, she noticed unusual tree formations, a sudden silence in the forest, rustling movement off the trail, and an overwhelming feeling that something was watching her. Everyone watches women's sports, and Portland is at the heart of it

Portland is the global epicenter of women’s sports. At least, that’s what some people have been saying lately. The phrase pops up in media coverage of our new WNBA team, the Fire, and our beloved women’s soccer team, the Thorns. And those are not our only professional women’s sports teams. We also have a pro softball team, the Cascade and a pro ultimate frisbee team called the Oregon Soar. The Cherry Bombs are our new pre-professional soccer team. We’ve got women’s tackle football, rugby and a badass roller derby league.    So, is Portland the epicenter of women’s sports? It’s hard to know how to measure such a thing, but what we can say for sure is that there are countless opportunities for women, girls, trans and nonbinary people to play sports and cheer for teams across the city. We talk a bit about the history behind the Rose City’s enthusiasm for women’s sports and hear from OPB business reporter Kyra Buckley about how the Portland Fire season is shaping up.    Watch a short video about the history of women’s sports in Portland by OPB’s Emily Hamilton.    Don’t forget to check out our many podcasts, which can be found on any of your favorite podcast apps: Hush Timber Wars Season 2: Salmon Wars Politics Now Think Out Loud And many more! Bonus: The Watches of Armin Strom – Claude Greisler (Co-founder & Master Watchmaker) – Episode 86

Openwork: Inside the Watch Industry

We're on summer hours, but we wanted to keep something in your feed as much as we can — so this one comes from our Watches Of podcast, a conversation Gabe recorded in person with Claude Greisler of Armin Strom. Claude is one of the brand's two modern co-founders and its master watchmaker, and he made the trip out to Los Angeles for Open House, where a full spread of the Armin Strom collection was on the tables. Before the watches, the two sat down for a wide-ranging talk about how he got here. Claude's path is what makes this one worth your time. He grew up in a family of watchmakers, trained for the better part of a decade across Swiss watchmaking, restoration, and movement construction, and cut his teeth on high complications at Christophe Claret. But unlike so many of his peers, he never put his own name on a dial. Instead, with his childhood friend Serge Michel, he took over Armin Strom: a legendary local watchmaker whose vision was a single, clear idea — the movement should be the star of the watch. That conviction is the spine of the conversation, from the decision to become a true in-house manufacturer to the brand's signature complications and its philosophy of transparent mechanics. This is also, at heart, an Openwork episode. What we keep coming back to on this show is the power of a clear, strong brand identity, and Armin Strom is a near-perfect case study: a watchmaker who walked away from the obvious move to inherit a brand with a reason for being, then re-engineered it from scratch. Along the way, Claude demystifies resonance — what it actually is, and why Armin Strom's approach to it is so distinct — using a couple of analogies that made it click for Gabe, and probably will for you too. We'll be back next week with a regularly scheduled episode. Openwork is a weekly podcast about how the watch industry actually works. An unfiltered look behind the scenes — no press releases, no hype, and no sponsored takes. Hosted by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly, co-founders of Collective Horology. Available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube Music, or wherever you get your podcasts. You can find us online at collectivehorology.com. While observing a group of young humans on a grassy field, Mozi becomes convinced that a mysterious black-and-white sphere is the victim of a planet-wide misunderstanding. Why is everyone kicking it? Why does only one human seem willing to pick it up? And why does everyone cheer when it ends up in a giant net? This hilarious alien correspondence is packed with laugh-out-loud observations and the wonderfully upside-down perspective that only Flip and Mozi can bring. As they try to make sense of a youth soccer game, our curious extraterrestrials uncover a classic case of Earth culture being much stranger than it first appears!Along the way, Flip and Mozi learn how easy it is to misunderstand something when you're seeing it for the very first time. From goalkeepers and sidelines to juice-box breaks and team uniforms, every part of the game becomes a source of confusion, comedy, and curiosity. This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast: Second Wind, our Running MythBusters series continues as we take on the training lies runners keep believing. With summer training heating up and fall marathon cycles getting underway, we break down the idea that more suffering automatically means better training. This episode tackles myths like “more miles always means better,” “rest days are weakness,” “no pain, no gain,” “every run needs a purpose,” “the watch is always right,” and “walking ruins the workout.” We talk about why mileage only helps if our bodies can recover from it, why rest is where training actually cashes the check, and why pain is not proof that we are training hard. Sometimes it is proof that we are training stupid. We also dig into the value of easy miles, joy miles, social miles, recovery runs, and those runs that simply clear the cobwebs from our brains. Watches, apps, and data can be helpful guides, but they do not know our stress, sleep, heat, family chaos, or life circumstances. And especially as summer heat and humidity settle in, we make the case that strategic walking is not failure. It may be the smartest thing we do. The big takeaway: train smart, recover well, use your brain, and do not let training myths wreck the miles ahead.

One of the most famous names in watch circles, Octavio Garcia is today the Creative Director for Gerald Charles. Previously, the American-born designer was Creative Director for Audemars Piguet during the all-important brand-building period from 2002-2015. Responsible for some of the most ground-breaking and sought after Royal Oak Offshore designs, including the famed series inspired by Formula 1 drivers such as Juan Pablo Montoya and Rubens Barichello as well as expanding the Millenary collection with extraordinary creations such as the Pianoforte, inspired by and paying homage to Quincy Jones.  Join us as we take a deep dive and discuss the extraordinary career of the Chicago-born designer. From the earlier days working with Jean-Claude Biver to the most logical step in creating his own brand, Gorilla Watches. Finally to today, and possibly the most natural progression, taking on design responsibilities for the brand created by the Maestro himself, Gérald Charles Genta, the designer who gave the world the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus for Patek Philippe as well as the Ingenieur for IWC and countless other enduring designs. Today the "Maestro" case design, penned by the late designer himself in the early 2000's, is like a gift to the talented Octavio Garcia. The unique and charismatic case provides a inviting challenge for creative design. Listen in as we discuss the latest creation unveiled at Watches and Wonders, a world first Perpetual Calendar with asymetrical movement, which perfectly compliments the unique shape of the Maestro case for an ideally balanced design. Listen in as we learn about the intricacies of the design's layout and the truly unique approach to the movement layout itself.  This unique episode provides a wonderful window into the creative approach and inspiration that drives Octavio Garcia as he continues to pen the incredible designs that will delight and provide timeless watches for today and generations in the future.  Thank you, as always, for downloading and listening to Keeping Time Podcast. Teddy Baldassarre has built one of the most influential watch platforms in the world — and just as compelling as the watches themselves is the entrepreneurial story behind it.I first met Teddy almost ten years ago at StartMart in Terminal Tower, before any of this existed: before millions of followers, before the global audience, before the authorized retail partnerships, and before the beautiful physical boutique we recorded this conversation in at Crocker Park.In this episode, Teddy and I explore where his passion for watches began, how a first YouTube video evolved into one of the largest educational platforms in the watch world, and how he turned content into trust, trust into community, and community into a real business. We talk about entrepreneurship, self-expression, building online credibility, navigating the leap from digital media to commerce and physical retail, working with traditional watch brands, the enduring appeal of mechanical watches in an age where no one technically needs one, and what watches can teach us about craft, memory, status, meaning, and time itself. At its core, this is a conversation about building something that is an honest extension of who you are — and what can happen when curiosity, taste, discipline, and timing compound over the course of a decade.00:00 Introduction & Meeting Teddy01:00 Early Days: Startups, YouTube Beginnings03:00 Discovering a Passion for Watches06:00 Watches as Craft & Self-Expression08:00 Turning Passion into Business & Monetization11:00 Launching E-Commerce & the Pandemic Pivot13:00 Brand, Community, and Content16:00 Building an Approachable Watch Platform18:00 Opening the First Store & Physical Expansion20:00 Partnering with Legacy Watch Brands22:00 Storytelling, Heritage, and the Value of Watches25:00 Watches in Modern Culture & Technology28:00 Entrepreneurial Learnings & Scaling a Personal Brand32:00 Team Building and Company Culture34:00 Pride, Impact, and Alignment with Life's Work36:00 Building Trust Online38:00 Defining Success39:00 Personal Curiosity & The Future of Watchmaking41:00 Looking Ahead: Growth, Retail, and Community42:00 Why Cleveland? All watch collectors have one watch that they will never part with. It might not be the most expensive piece in the collection, the rarest, or even the one that gets the most wrist time. Sometimes, a watch becomes irreplaceable for reasons that have very little to do with specifications, market value, or prestige. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and Thomas to discuss the watches they simply couldn't imagine selling. Along the way, the conversation touches on sentimentality, personal milestones, and how our relationships with watches can evolve. While many collectors talk about buying and selling as part of the hobby, some pieces seem destined to stay.

Rich Fordon and I first connected at either OMBAS 2025 at Walt Grace Vintage for the Menta Watches event, or perhaps it was Rolliefest last Fall. We had some great conversation only to then see one another inside the orbit of Watches and Wonders back in April. His appointment at A. Lange & Söhne happened to be immediately before mine, so we decided to join forces to create one large, two-time-slot-size appointments to maximize our time there. We went on to have lunch together where we were joined by none other than another previous Hodinkee employee, Jon Bues, so needless to say, we had some quality time at the venue together.Rich is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to watches, and I was delighted to learn he would be interested in coming on this show as it seem I never have enough time with him, plus I knew nothing about his foray into watches or what he loves most. That's all here, so I hope you enjoy it along with a small surprise by way of his time spent playing baseball. Please join me in welcoming Rich. You can listen above or watch below. Send us Fan MailHosts Beth McMullen and Lisa Schmid cut through the noise of book marketing advice to spotlight what genuinely moves books: word of mouth. Nearly half of readers (47–48%) choose books based on personal recommendations — outperforming social media, platforms, and AI discovery tools combined. Beth and Lisa share three low-cost, actionable strategies to spark that word of mouth before and after your launch.3 Strategies to Spark Word of Mouth1. Build a Street Team•       Recruit 20–30 trusted readers (writers, friends, community members) and give them an advance copy — digital or print•       Provide a short, clear list of 3 specific asks: post on social media, share with friends, leave a review•       One voice becomes 25 — and those 25 can each reach 10 more, creating exponential amplification with minimal effort from you2. Engage Bookstagrammers & BookTok Creators — Early•       Identify creators who read books in your genre months before your launch — not the week of•       Comment, share, and engage with their content authentically to build a genuine relationship first•       Pay it forward with fellow authors — share their books freely, and don't be afraid to ask directly when your book drops3. Attend Local Book Festivals•       Book festivals are abundant, often within driving distance, and free to apply for as an author — no flights or hotel rooms required•       Having a new or recent release significantly improves your chances of acceptance; apply before your launch•       In-person connection creates lasting amplifiers — readers who meet you, enjoy your book, and tell 10 friends Key Takeaway: Stop spending hours on content nobody sees. Invest that time in real relationships — book groups, communities, and fellow authors. Marketing doesn't have to be expensive or high-tech to work.Have a marketing tip that's worked for you? Beth and Lisa want to hear it.•       Beth: beth@writerswithwrinkles.net•       Lisa: lisa@writerswithwrinkles.net Support the show Visit the WebsiteFind Full Episodes on YouTube!Writers with Wrinkles Link Tree for socials and more!

This week on The Business of Watches, we're talking to the man behind one of the more successful new watch brands in recent years, Studio Underd0g. Richard Benc is just 33, and since 2020, he's built his irreverent, approachable-priced, design-driven brand to a significant size, producing about 14,000 watches last year.   And he's done it all, not from Switzerland or Hong Kong, but from the U.K. Benc has grown his business with intent, making strategic investments in his supply chain, including buying full control of the assembly and after-sales service company that builds Studio Underd0g's distinct timepieces. Studio Underd0g is now the biggest assembler of mechanical watches in the U.K. and isn't only selling watches with drops and collabs, but is building up stock to make more watches available on its website. Next up for Benc and his brand is a new physical, public, and retail location. The 'D0ghouse' will open in Maidenhead this month and serve as a public showcase for the upstart brand and its operations. It's another big step for the company that comes with its own set of fresh opportunities and challenges. And Benc gives us a tease on what may be coming next - there will be a new 04Series of watches that will take the brand to a place it hasn't been (mechanically) before.  Show Notes  0:40  Business News: Secondary Market Prices Climb, James Marks Jumps To Sotheby's, Christie's Grabs Cartier Watch Record (Hodinkee) 0:50 WatchCharts.com 1:49 The Cartier Crash And The New Value Of Imperfection  (MenWith Magazine) 2:42 This Record-Setting Patek Is The Priciest Watch Ever Sold In Asia (Maxim) 3:28 Visit Brighton (Great Britain) 4:40 Studio Underd0g 6:10 A Minions Children's Watch (eBay)9:17 Hong Kong Watch and Clock Fair 9:23 Inside The EPHJ (Hodinkee Swiss 101) 11:33 Studio Underd0g 01Series Watermelon 13:40 Assembled In Great Britain (Studio Underd0g) 17:10 Studio Underd0g Buys Horologium (Watch Pro) 22:30 The Business of Watches Podcast: Christopher Ward CEO Mike France 24:50 Studio Underd0g 02Series 25:08 Studio Underdog 03Series 29:03 A Fresh Passion Fruit Collab From H.
