This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast: Second Wind, our Running MythBusters series continues as we take on the training lies runners keep believing. With summer training heating up and fall marathon cycles getting underway, we break down the idea that more suffering automatically means better training. This episode tackles myths like “more miles always means better,” “rest days are weakness,” “no pain, no gain,” “every run needs a purpose,” “the watch is always right,” and “walking ruins the workout.” We talk about why mileage only helps if our bodies can recover from it, why rest is where training actually cashes the check, and why pain is not proof that we are training hard. Sometimes it is proof that we are training stupid. We also dig into the value of easy miles, joy miles, social miles, recovery runs, and those runs that simply clear the cobwebs from our brains. Watches, apps, and data can be helpful guides, but they do not know our stress, sleep, heat, family chaos, or life circumstances. And especially as summer heat and humidity settle in, we make the case that strategic walking is not failure. It may be the smartest thing we do. The big takeaway: train smart, recover well, use your brain, and do not let training myths wreck the miles ahead.

Waarom verzamelen we eigenlijk?

One of the most famous names in watch circles, Octavio Garcia is today the Creative Director for Gerald Charles. Previously, the American-born designer was Creative Director for Audemars Piguet during the all-important brand-building period from 2002-2015. Responsible for some of the most ground-breaking and sought after Royal Oak Offshore designs, including the famed series inspired by Formula 1 drivers such as Juan Pablo Montoya and Rubens Barichello as well as expanding the Millenary collection with extraordinary creations such as the Pianoforte, inspired by and paying homage to Quincy Jones. Join us as we take a deep dive and discuss the extraordinary career of the Chicago-born designer. From the earlier days working with Jean-Claude Biver to the most logical step in creating his own brand, Gorilla Watches. Finally to today, and possibly the most natural progression, taking on design responsibilities for the brand created by the Maestro himself, Gérald Charles Genta, the designer who gave the world the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus for Patek Philippe as well as the Ingenieur for IWC and countless other enduring designs. Today the "Maestro" case design, penned by the late designer himself in the early 2000's, is like a gift to the talented Octavio Garcia. The unique and charismatic case provides a inviting challenge for creative design. Listen in as we discuss the latest creation unveiled at Watches and Wonders, a world first Perpetual Calendar with asymetrical movement, which perfectly compliments the unique shape of the Maestro case for an ideally balanced design. Listen in as we learn about the intricacies of the design's layout and the truly unique approach to the movement layout itself. This unique episode provides a wonderful window into the creative approach and inspiration that drives Octavio Garcia as he continues to pen the incredible designs that will delight and provide timeless watches for today and generations in the future. Teddy Baldassarre has built one of the most influential watch platforms in the world — and just as compelling as the watches themselves is the entrepreneurial story behind it.I first met Teddy almost ten years ago at StartMart in Terminal Tower, before any of this existed: before millions of followers, before the global audience, before the authorized retail partnerships, and before the beautiful physical boutique we recorded this conversation in at Crocker Park.In this episode, Teddy and I explore where his passion for watches began, how a first YouTube video evolved into one of the largest educational platforms in the watch world, and how he turned content into trust, trust into community, and community into a real business. We talk about entrepreneurship, self-expression, building online credibility, navigating the leap from digital media to commerce and physical retail, working with traditional watch brands, the enduring appeal of mechanical watches in an age where no one technically needs one, and what watches can teach us about craft, memory, status, meaning, and time itself. At its core, this is a conversation about building something that is an honest extension of who you are — and what can happen when curiosity, taste, discipline, and timing compound over the course of a decade.00:00 Introduction & Meeting Teddy01:00 Early Days: Startups, YouTube Beginnings03:00 Discovering a Passion for Watches06:00 Watches as Craft & Self-Expression08:00 Turning Passion into Business & Monetization11:00 Launching E-Commerce & the Pandemic Pivot13:00 Brand, Community, and Content16:00 Building an Approachable Watch Platform18:00 Opening the First Store & Physical Expansion20:00 Partnering with Legacy Watch Brands22:00 Storytelling, Heritage, and the Value of Watches25:00 Watches in Modern Culture & Technology28:00 Entrepreneurial Learnings & Scaling a Personal Brand32:00 Team Building and Company Culture34:00 Pride, Impact, and Alignment with Life's Work36:00 Building Trust Online38:00 Defining Success39:00 Personal Curiosity & The Future of Watchmaking41:00 Looking Ahead: Growth, Retail, and Community42:00 Why Cleveland? All watch collectors have one watch that they will never part with. It might not be the most expensive piece in the collection, the rarest, or even the one that gets the most wrist time. Sometimes, a watch becomes irreplaceable for reasons that have very little to do with specifications, market value, or prestige. In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and Thomas to discuss the watches they simply couldn't imagine selling. Along the way, the conversation touches on sentimentality, personal milestones, and how our relationships with watches can evolve. While many collectors talk about buying and selling as part of the hobby, some pieces seem destined to stay.

Jeffrey Klingelhofer says recent inflation data reflects crosscurrents from oil prices and geopolitics, but emphasizes labor and wage trends as the more important forward indicators. He notes consumers, including higher earners, are trading down, while companies like Walmart (WMT) absorb rising costs. Tim and Armand are obviously incredibly involved with the pre-owned watch world, but that's not to say there's not still reasons to buy a new watch. In this episode, they take a look at all the reasons a watch collector might consider new over pre-owned. They dig into the case for buying new: no DPO (Dreaded Previous Owner) to worry about, no over-polishing surprises, and the chance to build a real relationship with an authorized dealer; so check out the full episode for the entire discussion! This week on The Business of Watches, a brand we don't talk about a lot on this channel - Jacob & Co. Complicated, audacious, and expensive, Jacob & Co. watches hold a unique position in the industry. The brand enjoyed a strong 2025, growing sales and volumes, according to estimates by Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult, bucking the industry trend. And the brand recently got some high-profile exposure on the wrist of the Roland Garros winner with French Open champion Alexander Zverev wearing Jacob & Co. during his matches and on the podium. We sat down in Geneva with Benjamin Arabov, the Chief Executive Officer of Jacob & Co., to talk about the brand's operations and strategy. You might be surprised at how Jacob & Co. watches are produced, the size of its production, and how the brand is being impacted by the war in the Middle East. Finally, looking ahead to next week's episode, number 30 in the history of The Business of Watches, we're planning a special Q&A episode and will gather some of the Hodinkee team, including Editor-In-Chief James Stacey and Editors Mark Kauzlarich and TanTan Wang, to answer your business-related questions. Rich Fordon and I first connected at either OMBAS 2025 at Walt Grace Vintage for the Menta Watches event, or perhaps it was Rolliefest last Fall. We had some great conversation only to then see one another inside the orbit of Watches and Wonders back in April. His appointment at A. Lange & Söhne happened to be immediately before mine, so we decided to join forces to create one large, two-time-slot-size appointments to maximize our time there. We went on to have lunch together where we were joined by none other than another previous Hodinkee employee, Jon Bues, so needless to say, we had some quality time at the venue together.Rich is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to watches, and I was delighted to learn he would be interested in coming on this show as it seem I never have enough time with him, plus I knew nothing about his foray into watches or what he loves most. That's all here, so I hope you enjoy it along with a small surprise by way of his time spent playing baseball. Please join me in welcoming Rich. You can listen above or watch below. Send us Fan MailHosts Beth McMullen and Lisa Schmid cut through the noise of book marketing advice to spotlight what genuinely moves books: word of mouth. Nearly half of readers (47–48%) choose books based on personal recommendations — outperforming social media, platforms, and AI discovery tools combined. Beth and Lisa share three low-cost, actionable strategies to spark that word of mouth before and after your launch.3 Strategies to Spark Word of Mouth1. Build a Street Team• Recruit 20–30 trusted readers (writers, friends, community members) and give them an advance copy — digital or print• Provide a short, clear list of 3 specific asks: post on social media, share with friends, leave a review• One voice becomes 25 — and those 25 can each reach 10 more, creating exponential amplification with minimal effort from you2. Engage Bookstagrammers & BookTok Creators — Early• Identify creators who read books in your genre months before your launch — not the week of• Comment, share, and engage with their content authentically to build a genuine relationship first• Pay it forward with fellow authors — share their books freely, and don't be afraid to ask directly when your book drops3. Attend Local Book Festivals• Book festivals are abundant, often within driving distance, and free to apply for as an author — no flights or hotel rooms required• Having a new or recent release significantly improves your chances of acceptance; apply before your launch• In-person connection creates lasting amplifiers — readers who meet you, enjoy your book, and tell 10 friends Key Takeaway: Stop spending hours on content nobody sees. Invest that time in real relationships — book groups, communities, and fellow authors. Marketing doesn't have to be expensive or high-tech to work.Have a marketing tip that's worked for you? June 4, 2026: Microsoft unveiled a wearable AI badge at Build 2026 that can see, hear, and act on your behalf. I break down the real productivity upside, and the chilling effect on human communication that the tech press isn't talking about. Then I take a critical look at Monterey Park's landmark vote to permanently ban data centers — 86% to 14%, the first in America. I understand why communities push back. I also think this particular decision is a mistake, and I'll tell you exactly why. Finally: Uber just cut 23% of its entire HR and recruiting function at record revenue, with 95% AI adoption across engineering — then said AI had nothing to do with it.
On today's show, Jeff Vaughn fills in for Josh Hammer and is joined by Dan Schneider, Vice President of MRC Free Speech America, to discuss Spencer Pratt's social media strategy in the Los Angeles Mayoral race, and the future of AI in political messaging. For years, the assumption was that the world would only become more digital — more connected, more automated, more dependent on screens. And yet, in recent years, there seems to have been a subtle shift in the opposite direction. Vinyl records are thriving, physical books remain popular, wired headphones and MP3 players are back, and younger generations increasingly talk about wanting more intentional, less connected experiences. So, where do mechanical watches fit into all of this? In this episode of Fratello Talks, Nacho is joined by Daan and Thomas to discuss whether this broader craving for the analog could point toward a healthy future for mechanical watches. The conversation touches on digital fatigue, analog objects, and why these slightly more impractical things can sometimes feel more meaningful than ever.

This week on The Business of Watches, we're talking to the man behind one of the more successful new watch brands in recent years, Studio Underd0g. Richard Benc is just 33, and since 2020, he's built his irreverent, approachable-priced, design-driven brand to a significant size, producing about 14,000 watches last year. And he's done it all, not from Switzerland or Hong Kong, but from the U.K. Benc has grown his business with intent, making strategic investments in his supply chain, including buying full control of the assembly and after-sales service company that builds Studio Underd0g's distinct timepieces. Studio Underd0g is now the biggest assembler of mechanical watches in the U.K. and isn't only selling watches with drops and collabs, but is building up stock to make more watches available on its website. Next up for Benc and his brand is a new physical, public, and retail location. The 'D0ghouse' will open in Maidenhead this month and serve as a public showcase for the upstart brand and its operations. It's another big step for the company that comes with its own set of fresh opportunities and challenges. And Benc gives us a tease on what may be coming next - there will be a new 04Series of watches that will take the brand to a place it hasn't been (mechanically) before. This week on the podcast, Zach and Kat are talking summer watches. This is a conversation we return to every year, it seems. As the weather warms up, it becomes apparent that some watches are just better suited to the summer months. Zach and Kat each pick summer watches in three categories: favorite affordable summer watch, the summer watch they'll actually be wearing this year, and a grail summer watch. Before that, they unpack and define the very nature of the summer watch, whether this is a completely made up concept, and why we're drawn to certain watches as the temperatures rise. On today’s edition of The Scott Jennings Show, Carl Jackson is filling in for Scott and he focused on the political fallout from California’s elections and what the results could mean for the future of American politics heading into 2026. Carl examined the day’s biggest headlines, voter trends, and the broader ideological battles shaping the national conversation. Former California Republican Party Chair Jennifer Horn joined the show to discuss the election results, the direction of California politics, and whether the state remains a bellwether for the rest of the country. Later, Xi Van Fleet drew on her experience surviving China’s Cultural Revolution to discuss political ideology, freedom, and the lessons she believes Americans should heed as cultural and political divisions deepen. https://www.joincrowdhealth.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to a long-awaited episode of Fratello On Air! Well, at least we're excited to be back. It's been a while, meaning we'll cover some recent news from the watch industry, sneaker landscape, television, and even our personal lives. We look forward to catching up with you! It's been nearly two months since we last published an episode of Fratello On Air. Yes, that's too long, but life has gotten in the way. It's mainly Mike who has had a crazy travel schedule, with just 36 hours spent in the UK in April. Balazs has been at the ready, but just seven weeks ago, he became a father as his daughter was born (on RJ's birthday, no less!). But here we are, with a full hour to catch up and a plan to visit the airwaves regularly.HandgelenkskontrolleWe actually end our show with the Handgelenkskontrolle, but tradition requires it to open our written recap. At the beginning of the show, we cover a multitude of topics. Of course, we mention travel with Mike doing the lion's share of flying. Multiple trips to the United States, a stop in Switzerland for Watches and Wonders 2026, Germany, and Italy have made the flight plan over the last two months. But don't worry, we've been watching television during flights or sleepless newborn nights. From, Euphoria, Succession, and IT: Welcome to Derry are some of the shows we've been viewing. Regarding shoes, Balazs mentioned the Nike Tennis Classic PRM, a sneaker with surfaces inspired by watch straps. Meanwhile, Mike has purchased a lively pair of New Balance 992s for the summer. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike is wearing his modern, dark blue 42mm Breitling SuperOcean. Balazs is wearing the watch he had on during his daughter's birth, his beloved Rolex GMT-Master 1675.Catching up on the newsOf course, we discuss the Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop. While he's not in love with the watch, he feels that it's one of the most significant happenings in watch history. That's a bold take! We also spend time talking about the new and pre-owned watch market in general. Balazs also mentions a recently auctioned Cartier-signed Piaget dual time, which sold for a wild amount of money. Mike's longtime favorite, the Cartier Tank Normale, also makes an appearance. Regarding recent acquisitions, Balazs has a new Grand Seiko waiting for him in the UK. Mike has gone in a very different direction with a vintage Bulova Accutron Spaceview. Despite numerous concerns about the reliability of these pieces, the watch has run perfectly for nearly two months. It even visited Watches and Wonders! This watch prompts a lovely story about Roger Smith, who owns a cantankerous version of the watch. We hope you enjoyed this episode of Fratello On Air. We promise to be back much sooner next time. Thanks for listening and, as always, if you have ideas for future shows, let us know!
