2 Fast 2 Forever: The Fast and Furious Podcast

Leesa Charlotte (Sweetbitter Podcast) returns to the show to talk about Jordana Brewster and Devon Aoki in D.E.B.S.! After Lisa gives us a brief history of gay cinema, Joey talks about Holland Taylor in Bosom Buddies. We admire Jordana Brewster as the villainous Lucy Diamond (especially her lip syncing scene) in a role that finally lets her have fun, and we equally admire Devon Aoki's ability to... be French and smoke cigarettes. We talk about the hidden test within the SAT, the Jordana Brewster/Jimmi Simpson dynamic, and the Toretto-esque cop and criminal love story. We make our picks for our favorite spy tech in the movie and ask an Australian about Lucy's plan to destroy Australia (which pivots into talk about Australia in movies and TV, which in turn pivots into talk about LOST and The Leftovers). We then turn out focus to the Fast & Furious: A Musical Parody that we all saw in the past week. We talk about why we evaluate it differently than most people, what we liked and what we wished was different, and why they decided to portray Roman the way they did. This week, we're headed to Harvard Law (what, like it's hard?) as J Mo cashes in a recent thrift store pick-up so we'd have something light and breezy to discuss in the wake of recent events. It's 2001's Legally Blonde, directed by Robert Luketic, and starring Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber, Holland Taylor, Jennifer Coolidge, Ali Larter, Osgood Perkins, Raquel Welch and Linda Cardellini. A box office hit that spawned a sequel, a broadway musical (with accompanying talent search reality show), and apparently a forthcoming prequel TV series, and launched its charming lead as a certified household name Movie Star after winning turns in Pleasantville and Election. Plus: both hosts have been to the theatre this week, and have field trips to report on for Conclave and Heretic. And we go deep into overtime after the end credits with a littany of thoughts on the first trailer for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, Legally Blonde is currently streaming for free on Tubi in Canada at the time of publication, and is also available via MGM. Other works referenced in this episode include The Saint, I Saw The TV Glow, The Transporter, I Know That Voice, Casa Bonita, Mi Amor!, Martha, Shawshank Redemption, My Old Ass, The Fallout, The Fog, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, A Perfect Circle's album Mer de Noms, cable TV, Longlegs, X-Men, Walk The Line, Walk Hard,  Animal House, Cruel Intentions, The Time Machine, Olympus Has Fallen, It's Complicated, American Pie, Barbie, the entire Mission: Impossible series, No Time To Die, The Dark Knight Rises, North by Northwest, Interstellar, The Fast and the Furious franchise, and John Wick among others. We'll be back next week as we've lined up the No-theme-ber schedule to coincide with the release of one of the last anticipated major release of the year. No, not Wicked. We're circling back to 2000's eventual Best Picture winner, Ridley Scott's Gladiator with Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, which can be found streaming north of the border currently on Netflix and Paramount+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!! Hamburger.

“Bosom Buddies” is a sitcom that aired on ABC from 1980 to 1982. The show starred Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari as two single men who disguise themselves as women to be able to move into a cheap apartment at a women-only residence. The show often explored themes of gender stereotypes and male/female relationships, using the characters' disguises to create comedic situations. Although “Bosom Buddies” started with good ratings, it struggled to maintain its audience and was canceled after two seasons. Despite its short run, the show is notable for launching Tom Hanks' career, who went on to become an Oscar-winning actor. Is this a show worth checking out? Could this show even be made modern day? Writer, comedian, and Lydia Tár's former publicist Daniella Mazzio joins to discuss Gus Van Sant's sharp, pitch-black satire of media, true crime, and a patently American brand of late 20th Century celebrity, 'To Die For'. The film is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, itself inspired by the true life trial of Pamela Smart, who seduced a teenage boy and coerced him and a friend to murder Smart's husband. The film features an excellent ensemble cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, Illeana Douglas, and a career-best Nicole Kidman. We discuss 'To Die For' as a nexus of many careers at compelling inflection points: Nicole Kidman breaking into leading woman roles while married to Tom Cruise, Gus Van Sant on the eve of his career skyrocketing to new heights with the success of the following year's 'Good Will Hunting', and the chance casting of Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix who would later become in-laws and artistic collaborators. Then, we examine the brilliant, kaleidoscopic script by 'The Graduate' screenwriter Buck Henry and how the film's patchwork construction foregrounds it thematically rich details. Finally, we discuss the real life inspiration for the film as well as the way the movie's indictment of the American media landscape anticipated elements of the OJ Simpson trial, which was playing out during the film's production and concluded just days before its release. (Editor's Note: This episode was recorded before OJ Simpson's death on April 10th, 2024 at the age of 76).Follow Daniella Mazzio on Twitter. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is absolutely not down for any Mr. Linguini erasure, thank you very much.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Sam (@conscious.altruism) and Aussie (@aussie_has_fomo), the Keep It Saussie (@keepitsaussie) duo best known for their appearance on The Ultimatum: Queer Love to talk about why the 2023 comedy Quiz Lady Should've Been Gay. We kick off the pod by taking a little walk down memory lane to revisit Sam and Aussie's Ultimatum experience and congratulate them on being the last couple standing. Then, it's time to dive right into one of the best direct-to-streaming comedies we have seen in awhile.  For those of you unfamiliar with Hulu's Quiz Lady, the movie follows queer-coded sisters Jenny (Sandra Oh) and Anne (Awkwafina) as they attempt to win a game show in order to save their beloved pug Mr. Linguini from dognappers (and pay off their mother's gambling debt). Additionally, it stars Holland Taylor as grumpy neighbor Francine. From the cast alone, the movie is already off to a pretty gay start. Even though neither sister is ever explicitly stated to be part of the alphabet mafia, every single thing about them screams gay. Jenny is a classically chaotic bisexual with a Subaru and blue hair. She runs on nothing but pure 80s music video vibes and iced coffee. Younger sister Anne is a homebody gay with social anxiety, a game show hyperfixation, and an incredibly close connection with her emotional support dog Mr. Linguini. There is just no way at all to read these two as straight characters. We talk about ways to make the movie even gayer, like turning Mr. Linguini into a cat and shipping Jenny with Francine in a classic Holland Taylor age-gap relationship.  We know one thing for sure, Quiz Lady Should've Been Gay.  Follow us on Twitter: (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. On tonight's Queer Voices, we speak with Allison Mathis, a candidate for 338th Judicial District Court Judge of Harris County. She is a native Houstonian who grew up in Spring Branch. When she was a teenager, she watched her brilliant, funny aunt struggle with a crack cocaine addiction that destroyed her life and sent her in and out of prison for years. She also watched several friends lose their bright futures due to their entanglement in the legal system due to non-violent drug offenses. She worked her way through a bachelor's degree in English at UH-Downtown as a coffee shop waitress, which was perfect for her because she loved books, coffee, and serving people. She went on to get a master's degree in Literature, but realized that as much as she loved reading and teaching, she could not escape the overwhelming feeling that she needed to do something involving the broken criminal justice system. She went to South Texas College of Law and graduated cum laude in 2012. We speak with Allison her race to become judge and why criminal justice is important to the LGBTQ community Then we speak with Destiny Smith a transgender theater actor based in Houston. Destiny graduated from Lamar University with a BS in Theater and Dance and now works fulltime as the Lighting Programmer and Technician at Stages Theater. We speak with Destiny about “Translucent”, a Queer Theater she is working to bring to Houston. You can see Destiny's brilliant work in current productions at Stages Theater. Finally we speak Nora Hahn who is starring as Ann Richards in the Garden Theater's production of “Ann”. This inspiring and hilarious play brings us face to face with a complex, colorful and captivating character bigger than the state from which she hailed. Written by Emmy Award winner Holland Taylor, Ann takes a revealing look at the impassioned woman who enriched the lives of her followers, friends and family. “Ann” runs February 2-11 at MATCH.Queer Voices airs in Houston Texas on 90.1FM KPFT and is heard as a podcast here. Queer Voices hopes to entertain as well as illuminate LGBTQ issues in Houston and beyond. “An Old Flame With a New Wick” (March 1, 2004) Despite the preconceptions you might have about Two and a Half Men, the fact remains that its first season features an episode centered on a trans man... when few other sitcoms ever bothered to tell a story about someone who's trans and male. In fact, the previous sitcom of note to do a trans man storyline was the previous episode we had guest Henry Giardina on for: the Golden Girls episode with Gil Kessler. In this installment, we discuss why sitcoms are allergic to trans men and why Two and a Half Man, improbably, doesn't completely fuck this up, even if it's very early 2000s in its understanding of trans people.
