Michael Sarnoski is forging his own unique path in Hollywood, with projects small (PIG), big (A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE) and somewhere in between, as with his newest film, THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD. Sarnoski's latest stars Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer and lands in theaters this weekend (June 19, 2026). Sarnoski's creative path -- which has often involved his own unique take on a familar genre or character -- was inspired and fortified as a young man by seeing the work of another singular director taking on a property he loved, and putting his own spin on in: Sam Raimi and Spider-Man, a match made in Marvel Movie heaven. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about all the movies you should see if you loved THE FURIOUS. You can read more at THE ACTION DESK. Help support this show and unlock bonus content! Robin Hood has been a lot of things over the centuries: noble thief, romantic outlaw, swashbuckling folk hero, animated fox, Kevin Costner with an accent that wanders wherever it pleases. But in Michael Sarnoski's hands, the myth becomes something darker, sadder, and more spiritually eviscerated. His new film, “The Death of Robin Hood,” is less interested in the legend as a heroic brand than in the man who might be trapped beneath its curse.Written and directed by Sarnoski, “The Death of Robin Hood” stars Hugh Jackman as an aging, haunted Robin Hood, a man grappling with a life of violence after a battle leaves him gravely injured. In the care of a mysterious Prioress played by Jodie Comer, he's offered something that might look like salvation, if he can survive long enough to accept it. The film also stars Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe, and arrives in theaters June 19 via A24.READ MORE: ‘Obsession': Curry Barker On His Twisted Wish-Fulfillment Horror Breakout, Inde Navarrette's Wild Performance, ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' & More [The Discourse Podcast]Sarnoski joined The Playlist's The Discourse podcast to talk about stripping away centuries of heroic varnish, finding the emotional soul of Robin Hood, reuniting with cinematographer Pat Scola, and writing the upcoming “Death Stranding” movie. And early in the conversation, he acknowledged a thread that has become increasingly clear across his work, from “Pig” to “A Quiet Place: Day One” to “The Death of Robin Hood”: these are stories about people who, in some way, already feel dead before the movie begins.
Frodo the cat serves as the ultimate horror witness in A Quiet Place: Day One (with Lupita Nyong’o) Crypticon Seattle, the great Pacific Northwest horror convention, has once again come and gone, but the memories linger. The panels are what make the convention feel like a class reunion. The panels are produced entirely by volunteer experts from across the region and are the ultimate in fan interaction. This is what it feels like to create a horror community, sharing our ideas and experiences with each other. This year, I decided to record some of the panels I participated in and attended to give you a sense of what happens at these events. This Pets in Horror panel was hosted by Brien Gorham, and I participated in it along with Kathy Fennesy and Todd Johnstson. If you are a long-time reader of our website or a listener of our podcast, you will know that I have a big ol’ soft spot for pets in horror. Whether they are the MacGuffins, the heroes, or the villains of the story, pets provide strong emotional connective tissue within horror constructs. The use of pets also sparks some great debates regarding the narrative use of animals. Because we have such a natural affinity for critters, horror movies tend to exploit those feelings by putting the animals in peril. Fair, or not? We will talk about that in this discussion. Brien was inspired by the success of last year’s remarkable film Good Boy which we have been a huge proponent for. You can use that link to listen to an interview with director Ben Leonberg, who discusses how he coaxed an award-winning performance from his pet dog, Indy. That movie, however, is just the tip of a very big trope iceberg. Thank you to Jason and Jasen for putting me on this panel, as it is something near and dear to me, and to many attending Crypticon. Brien Gorham outlined his panel discussion topics for this panel: “Indy the Dog from Good Boy has become the latest in a line of cinematic pets to steal our hearts, but domestic animals have a long history in horror movies. Whether that be as a witness, antagonist, or, as in the case of Indy, a protagonist. Let’s discuss how our collective best friends have been represented in horror films.” Introductions Opening question: If you could choose one pet from a horror movie to have in your home, who would you choose and why? Some larger questions that can be applied to any category: How do our personal relationships with pets affect how we see them in stories? (Please feel free to include personal stories where appropriate) How does the motivation of a pet differ from human motivation? Altruism? How do we recognize animal performances? (Indy's acting win) What resources are available for those who are sensitive to animal violence? Part 1: Pets as Witnesses Possible Movies: Cat's Eye, Poltergeist, The Hills Have Eyes I and II Let's start with movies where a family pet serves as a witness or bystander to an individual or family crisis. In these cases, what purpose does the inclusion of the pet serve? How much do we hate it when pets are introduced just to be killed off for sympathy? Part 2: Pets as Heroes Possible Movies: Good Boy, Cat's Eye, Phenomena, The Hills Have Eyes Next, let's explore pets that go above and beyond, playing an active role in saving the day. Which movie pets do you most admire? How do certain traits of specific animals play into this heroism? How much do we hate it when animals sacrifice themselves for humans? Part 3: Pets as Antagonists Possible Movies: Cujo, Lake Placid, The Uncanny, Uninvited, Pet Sematary, The Black Cat (any version) What happens when man's best friend turns violent, and our furry friends rebel against us? The most terrifying pets in horror? The most heartbreaking transformations? Closing What beloved pets have we not seen represented in horror movies? PET HORROR RESOURCES You can check out our Favorite Horror Movie Dogs Dead List for our updated list of horror hounds for your reference. Kathy Fennessy is a former president of the Seattle Film Critics Society and runs the Seattle Film Blog. She has a blog post titled “Good Boy and Other House Pets in Horror: Purrs, barks, Growls, and Deadly Attacks.“ I find that Kathy is the unofficial research librarian for Crypticon Seattle and has a deep and thorough knowledge of the genre. For those of you who get triggered by animal harm or death in movies, please visit “Does the Dog Die?“ It’s a great resource for people who need to filter their movies for moments that will trigger anxiety, with the primary trope being that of harm to dogs. It also covers things like harm to children and rape, which are non-starter elements for many people. Todd Johnston, in particular, is a bit faint, though I did boost the audio when he is speaking. A Quiet Place Day One (Sarnoski 2024) A Quiet Place Day One is an odd film. Laura very much enjoyed the primary plot and characters, and so for her this film worked well. And while Marshall did also, for him that felt summarily disconnected from the Day One universe and therefore did not work at all. Of possible interest at a larger scale is this is another big name horror franchise doing a sequel in New York City. This could be reflective of the right wing's recent intense demonization of major cities as cesspools of crime and violence. While that simply is not true, the narrative has still be aggressively pushed by the neo-Right. There is lots more of our podcast! Please listen, review, subscribe, and tell your friends. LOOK OUT! It's only Films To Be Buried With! Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with the brillant actor, music maker and film maker ALEX WOLFF! As a quick short-hand for regular listeners of the podcast who want a quick face to a name, Alex played Peter in FTBBW classic Hereditary (the whole episode is practically built on a foundation of spoilers so watch that first if it's on your "to do" list!). However, Alex is known for so much more! You might know him from The Naked Brothers Band in a younger time, or perhaps more recently A Quiet Place: Day One, or the Jumanji updates. It is a genuine pleasure to know that he's a total film nerd and it's a really fun and funny hang with these two - pure joy and as said, frequent Hereditary spoilers (but context clues will help you if you don't know the film or are not a horror fan). She may have won an Oscar for her first film role, but Lupita Nyong'o spent the early part of her life hiding her desire to be an actor. Lupita tells Marc about growing up under autocratic rule, living in a country where creative voices were suppressed, and learning how to speak out even when it's risky. Lupita also explains why she followed up 12 Years a Slave with Star Wars and how A Quiet Place: Day One helped cure her fear of cats. (Check out Lupita's new podcast Mind Your Own, launching September 19, and her new animated film The Wild Robot, in theaters September 27.) Hosted on Acast. Sean and Amanda recap the third installment of the ‘Quiet Place' franchise—the Lupita Nyong'o–starring ‘A Quiet Place: Day One'—which surprised both of them with its scale and quality (1:00). Then, they are joined by Chris Ryan to discuss Kevin Costner's gigantic gamble, ‘Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1' (25:00).
