On a recent trip to India, the Surgeon General sat down with the delightful and inspiring father-daughter duo of Aamir and Ira Khan. Aamir is a renowned and beloved actor and producer, appearing in some of India's biggest films. Ira Khan is founder of the Agatsu Foundation, a peer support and counseling center in Mumbai. Many people assume Aamir and Ira's lives are easy and worry-free given their success and fame. But as you'll hear in our conversation, they, like all of us, have their own mental health struggles. Ira openly shares her experience with depression and anxiety. And at the height of his career, Aamir stepped back from acting to reconnect with himself and his family. They are very open about their mental health journey, which they are taking together as father and daughter. We hope this conversation gives families the inspiration and courage to have honest conversations about mental health. This conversation is the EXTENDED version of the conversation that appears on Netflix India's YouTube channel. (03:10) What was the culture of mental health different for Aamir and Ira when each were growing up? (08:06) How has Ira struggled with, and addressed, her mental health?(13:39) How did Aamir respond to Ira's mental health struggles, and navigate his own?(25:00) How is loneliness affecting people around the world, and what can we do about it?(35:22) How can we shift the culture around talking about mental health, and make it as easy to talk about as a physical ailment?(40:41) What have Aamir and Ira learned from doing therapy?(51:43) How has social connection been a powerful healing force in Dr. Murthy's life?(01:00:35) What advice do Aamir and Ira have for parents and for young people struggling with their mental health? We'd love to hear from you! Send us a note at housecalls@hhs.gov with your feedback & ideas. For more episodes, visit www.surgeongeneral.gov/housecalls. Listen to our Fall South Asian Cinema special edition of APEX Express! On tonight's show, we celebrate South Asian cinema – 3rdi Film Fest – the bay area's annual South Asian film festival is back again with some stellar programming and to spark some provocative conversations. In a thought-provoking discussion, producer Preeti Mangala Shekar sits down in conversation with musician Robin Sukhadia and delves into the intricate and multifaceted portrayal of Indian nationalism as presented in two of the most iconic films in contemporary Indian cinema: Lagaan and RRR. While both films are set against the backdrop of British colonial rule, they offer sharply contrasting visions of how the Indian struggle for independence is portrayed More about this discussion happening this weekend at 3rdi here. We also highlight lesbian film maker Kirthi Nath on her new film, Paramita, about queer healer and writer Prajna Paramita Choudhary. Paramita is a quiet and profound exploration about the transformational power of mindfulness and how coming out can inspire healing across generations. The film invites viewers into the spiritual life of Prajna Paramita Choudhury, an Oakland-based mindfulness teacher and acupuncturist, as she comes out to her traditional Bangladeshi mother. Buddhist practices, meditation, and nature support Prajna on a journey of intergenerational healing. The post APEX Express – October 17, 2024 appeared first on KPFA.

Hello, romantics! Your host Manish (@vertigay314) is at the halfway point of the Sports Romance miniseries. For the occasion, he invited his two cousins Vikrum and Kinjal to talk about the monumentally influential Bollywood epic LAGAAN. The 2001 film was the 3rd Indian nominated for the Best International Feature Oscar, and as of now the last. It stars superstar Aamir Khan as a farmer who leads a motley crew in a high-stakes game of cricket against the British in order to save their village. With a compelling love triangle, elegant filmmaking, and stirring music, LAGAAN is a classic of the 21st century and extremely entertaining two decades later.

Credits Banner: Sri Bharati Enterprises Cast: Nitin, Genelia, Pradeep Rawat, Nassar, Sashank, Rajiv Kanakala, Tanikella Bharani, Indu, Venu Madhav, Ajay, Chatrapathi Sekhar, Sameer, Supreeth, Madhunandhan, Ping Pong Surya, SS Rajamouli, SS Kanchi, Shravan, Story: Vijayendra Prasad Dialogues: M Ratnam Music: MM Keeravani Cinematography: KK Senthil Kumar Stunts: Ram-Lakshman, Vijay Costumes: Rama Rajamouli Editing: Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao Art: Anand Sai Screenplay - Direction: SS Rajamouli Producer: A Bharati Theatrical release date: 23rd September 2004 Writing/Direction: Writing is thop raa babu. Simply its a tale of good vs evil and its extremely well written and even better executed. Story goes on two conflict points much like any Rajamouli movie. Entire 1st half is dedicated to fight between the students and then literally at the perfect time at the interval BIkshu Yadav character is brought in and the two parallel stories combine into it. In screenwriting, there's something called when all hope is lost for the protagonists. Generally it happens in 2nd act of a movie, here it happens at interval so its like now what, how are they going to win? 2nd half is packed with a cat and mouse game and then it reminds of Lagaan in terms of the final challenge given by Pradeep Rawat. Ironically Lagaan has cricket, this has rugby and Pradeep Rawat is part of both iconic films. But more than that to blend a foreign sport that literally nobody knew about in Rugby with mass elements and revenge in it is just brilliant and actually mind blowing to be honest. Nevause nobody would even think of that. The most important character is actually a cheerleader next to Indu at 29:19 she explains the entire rugby game to the audience so they understand it. It also perfectly captures the college life, trends, and the lifestyle of youth back then so if you notice there's a lot of youth elements combined with mass moments in the entire movie, so it appeals to all sections of audience. So in a way it was ahead of its time and could say its pathbreaking movie because nobly had made a youth film like this so far. Despite whole Uday Kiran and Tarun dmination, dont believe they made something like this. It also has a love track to create romance, comedy track with the students, Venu Madhav and SS Kanchi, and then so much action with he rugby scenes. Themes of the movie are human belief/sprit the will to win for the eagles, good vs evil in the team vs Bikshu Yadav and then revenge, Generally revenge is done for main characters in Rajamoulo movies but this entire movie if you think about is Rajeev Kanakala;s revenge on Bikshu Yadav for taking his land and killing his father. Direction by Rajamouli is perfect and proves why he's the master story teller. Entire 1st half is extremely trendy and well done with the student fights and romantic track with Bikshu Yadav in between, but the way he established all the characters and in creating drama and emotion was too good. Especially Nassar death scene that's the highlight scene of the movie purely due to the raw emotion it invokes. You hate the villains so much and want to go into the screen and kill them. Theres always one scene like that in every Rajamouli movie which makes you hate the villain and want to see them die asap. Also symbolically he showed wings and claws. Because claws destroy wings if they touch them both the student groups are always fighting with each other, but what happens when a bull crushes the claws and wings? Then an Eagle forms and the eagle somehow kills the bull. Climax scene is goosebumps stuff. The taking, emotions, and pure adrenaline it gives the audience you have so many mass moments in a 40 minute climax episode. End shot is unlimited goosebumps. And you see the stamp. Even in 2004 he was it his peak story telling abilities.

Two bowlers, two controversies. The first one involving Deepti Sharma's run out that once again sparked the ‘Spirit of Cricket' debate, and the second involving Jasprit Bumrah, who might not be taking part in the upcoming T20 World Cup. In this episode, host Rahul Pandey is joined by Indian Express' Devendra Pandey to talk about how Bumrah's absence will affect India, and why what Sharma did was absolutely fair (and was just revenge for what happened in Lagaan).

The only way to revive #IndianFilmMusic is to bring back #ClassicalRaagas in our songs! Almost all contemporary music fails to reach anywhere near the heights of #Lagaan (2001) or #DilSe (1998) because #IndianClassicalMusic has vanished in the last two decades. The soul of our music is our immortal Raagas: Bhairav, Bhairvi, Malkauns, Darbari, Malhar, and dozens more! #AamirKhan cites two songs as his inspiration, #OhReTaalMile (Anokhi Raat, 1968) and #TereMereSapne (Guide, 1965): 1st based on Raag #Pilu, 2nd on Raag #Gara! Apparently, his #LaalSinghChaddha team forgot the Raags behind the classics so their music disappoints ultimately! Daphne Chen always held a special place in her heart for the Taiwanese girl group S.H.E. Growing up in Ohio, she'd listen to their greatest hits before falling asleep, clinging to their pop songs as one of her only genuine links to the island and the culture her family had left far behind. So years later, when Daphne realized that those greatest hits were actually covers of American pop songs by Destiny's Child and the Legally Blonde soundtrack, she suddenly had a lot of questions... not just about S.H.E., but about why idolizing a Taiwanese girl group was so important to young Daphne in the first place. In this episode, we're sharing three conversations about the need to see and hear ourselves in popular culture — and the limitations of what pop culture can do to meet those needs. After Cathy chats with Daphne about their Asian teen idols in music, our intern Alex Chun calls up his favorite OnlyFans star, Cody Seiya, to unpack how watching queer porn has played such an outsized role in their own understanding of intimacy. Then, producer Harsha Nahata meets with two Indian diaspora culture writers to compare how — even with their differing upbringings and vastly different relationships to Bollywood movies — they began to question the role and the power of the Bollywood industry.
