Indigenous women led movements have continued to disrupt the construction of Canadian oil giant Enbridge Energy's Line 3 pipeline with over a thousand arrested. Police have escalated in a multitude of ways (felony charges, high bails, rubber bullets, tear gas, etc) against water protecting pipeline opponents. We know through the bold investigative journalism of The Intercept that Enbridge has created a fund through the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to finance local and state police for pipeline security. The company and state collusion has essentially privatized the police for a Canadian oil company. The journalism has been so embarrassing for Enbridge and the state of Minnesota that they've been begun to erect barriers to release of public information. We talk with investigative reporter Will Parrish and researcher Charlotte Grubb about this. Will Parrish (@willparrishca) is an investigative reporter whose work is rooted in tradition of muckraking journalism. His reporting appears in The Intercept, The Guardian, The Nation, East Bay Express, Counterpunch, Shadowproof, and other online and print venues. Charlotte Grubb (@CharlotteGrubb) is a freelance researcher, writer and climate justice organizer. Her work focuses on stopping fossil fuel projects and creating a just transition that centers decolonization and building power outside of state institutions. She is currently based in New Mexico. Will Galison joins me on episode 38. Will first picked up the chromatic harmonica when studying guitar at the Berklee College of Music. He quickly realised he had an affinity with the instrument, and after spending a day with Toots Thielemans he knew the chromatic instrument was what he wanted to do. Will went on to record numerous albums under his own name, including a successful collaboration with Madeleine Peyroux. He has been an in-demand session player for numerous years, with credits performing with the likes of Barbara Streisand, Carly Simon, Donald Fagen and many others. On top of all this he has recorded a version of the Sesame Street theme tune used on the TV show. With interests ranging from jazz, to pop and classical, as well as playing some mean diatonic, Will really delivers a pocketful of soul.Links:Will's website: https://www.willgalison.net/Takin It Back With Barack:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJW67YfLWgsOdysseus Fantasy:https://www.willgalison.net/odysseus-concertoBeethoven Spring Sonata:https://www.willgalison.net/beethoven-spring-sonataWill's Soundcloud:https://soundcloud.com/will-galison/Cremona harmonica company:http://www.workshop-cremona.com/Catalog%20ALLE.PDF.pdfWills-make Harmonica company:https://www.facebook.com/groups/2479774272276646/?redirect=falseHal Leonard Jazz Standards tutorial:https://www.halleonard.com/product/1335/jazz-standardsHal Leonard Pop Songs tutorial:https://www.halleonard.com/product/1090/pop-classicsHarmonicaUK Virtual Chromatic Weekend:http://harmonica.uk/HUKBlog/chromatic-weekend/Videos:Odyssey:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPC-fh3jyswBeethoven Spring Sonata:https://www.willgalison.net/beethoven-spring-sonataToots Thielemans playing Undecided:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMTmKwosSi8Pocketful of Soul:https://www.willgalison.net/pocket-full-of-soulSkylark with Sean Harness:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KylY3vQv8Y4&t=105sAlso check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains some of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQ

COVID-19 is having a massive effect on the tech industry as companies deal with delayed component availability, missed revenue targets, and canceled trade shows. Focus is shifting to Apple and the possibility that this summer's WWDC could be canceled. What's the fear vs. reality of the situation? How close is Apple coming to releasing a MacBook based on an ARM processor of their own design? Rumors are suggesting it could be as soon as 2021. Last up, wireless OS recovery may be coming to iOS sooner than later. It paves the way for a future with portless phones, but also enables an iOS device to be recovered without the use of a computer. Scatter Podcast interview with Will Chase, Data Scientist at the University of Pennsylvania. I stumbled upon one of Will's interactive, web-based data visualizations ("Visualizing Risk: Remotely Triggered Earthquakes" - link below) and was fascinated by the way he leveraged the power of R, Mapbox, and D3 for this stunning data storytelling project. Will has a BS in Microbiology and is almost entirely self-taught in the programming, data science, and advanced visualization space. He provides solid resources throughout the episode and lists some of his favorite, world-renowned data visualization designers, and it's great to see him contributing back to the data science community by open-sourcing as many projects as he can. Will is a great resource for anyone wanting to up the ante on their visualization skills. He's responsive via email, Twitter, and GitHub, and I'd definitely recommend following Will on your platform of choice... I have no doubt that he'll rise to be a visualization influencer in the years to come. Enjoy the show! Today's episode of Research Like a Pro is about determining which of the many people of the same name and same place is your subject. How do you make sense of a complicated situation such as two individuals with very similar identities? It takes thorough research of all family members, analyzing the data, and then understanding the locality. Diana tells about the Edward Sullivan project, and how she solved it. This is Episode 027 of the Waitin’ Since Last Saturday podcast. Georgia beat Auburn on Saturday 20-13. it wasn’t pretty, but make that 2 in a row over the Tigers and 8 out of the last 10 for the Bulldogs in this series, the south’s oldest rivalry game. In this episode, Will Tony and Scott touch on the obvious in how the defense continues to put Georgia in position to win games. The offense did just enough and with they key being zero turnovers compared to 3 turnovers committed by Auburn. The standout in the game was Isaiah McKenzie as he scored on a jet sweep on offense and returned a punt for 57 yards to account for the only two touchdowns for the Dawgs. There’s a lot of football talk, a little bit of Basketball talk and a brief interruption by the maid as she tries to clean Will’s room while he’s talking to us. It is Georgia Auburn week stay tuned for the next hour and a half as the three of us give our thoughts and insight on what the Dawgs need to do to come away with a victory down in Jordan Hare Stadium this weekend, but we cover a wide range of other topics on this special show. Naturally we’ll get into the college football playoff rankings and what it means to teams who might or might not be set up to be on of the last four standing. College football will be the main topic du jour. But, college basketball tips off this Friday, November 13th. Georgia hosts Chattanooga at Stegman Coliseum so sandwiched right in the middle of this episode we take a break to give a quick little preview of the basketball season. You’ll be pleased to hear that Will and Tony are quite bullish on the Dawgs chances to make the NCAA Tournament this year.
