It is now over four years ago that Julian Assange was spirited away from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and detained in Belmarsh's maximum security prison. Being locked in a tiny concrete room for more than 1500 days has taken a serious toll on the Australian publisher; reports from this week suggest that his health is “deteriorating by the minute.”One man who has covered the Wikileaks co-founder's case closer than almost anyone is Kevin Gosztola. Gosztola is an American journalist, the managing editor of Shadowproof and co-hosts the Unauthorized Disclosure Podcast with Rania Khalek. He is the author of the new book “Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case against Julian Assange.” Today, he joins “Watchdog” host Lowkey to talk all things WikiLeaks, Assange, leaks and cybersecurity. The U.S. government has always been hostile to leakers revealing embarrassing or compromising information about its actions. But Gosztola states that the Central Intelligence Agency's “gloves came off” in 2017 as it ramped up its attacks on Assange. By 2017, CIA Director Mike Pompeo had labeled WikiLeaks as a hostile non-state intelligence service and began turning the screw. For Gosztola, the CIA's response was a symptom of the agency's insecurity; “And so at that point, the CIA probably feels they are threatened, their whole regime of pursuing the global war on terrorism is in jeopardy as a result of WikiLeaks,” he told Lowkey. It is often forgotten how much incredible, extraordinary information WikiLeaks provided the world. This included the Guantánamo prison manuals, which showed that the U.S. Army hid prisoners from Red Cross inspectors and illegally held captives in solitary confinement to soften them up for interrogation. What WikiLeaks published was barely a toothpick in a forest compared to the amount of information the U.S. national security state keeps secret. Every day, Gosztola said, Washington produces tens of millions of pieces of classified information. This means, he added that it is becoming increasingly difficult and unwieldy to keep all these secrets under lock and key. If this continues, it might become “impossible for the U.S. government to keep doubling down and adding more infrastructure… eventually, the system might actually collapse in on itself because it isn't able to support all of the stresses that are being put on it to protect” itself, he addsSupport the showThe MintPress podcast, “The Watchdog,” hosted by British-Iraqi hip hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in the public interest to know – including intelligence, lobby and special interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target dissent. The Watchdog goes against the grain by casting a light on stories largely ignored by the mainstream, corporate media.Lowkey is a British-Iraqi hip-hop artist, academic and political campaigner. As a musician, he has collaborated with the Arctic Monkeys, Wretch 32, Immortal Technique and Akala. He is a patron of Stop The War Coalition, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Racial Justice Network and The Peace and Justice Project, founded by Jeremy Corbyn. He has spoken and performed on platforms from the Oxford Union to the Royal Albert Hall and Glastonbury. His latest album, Soundtrack To The Struggle 2, featured Noam Chomsky and Frankie Boyle and has been streamed millions of times.

On the latest program, we celebrate Daniel Ellsberg Week (April 24-30), co-sponsored by The Ellsberg Initiative for Peace and Democracy & and RootsAction Education Fund, as we honor whistleblowers in support of a truly free press from Dan Ellsberg to Julian Assange. First, Mickey talks with journalist Kevin Gosztola, author of Guilty of Journalism. Kevin gives important updates on the Assange case as the WikiLeaks founder languishes in a Belmarsh prison awaiting potential extradition to the US to be tried under the Espionage Act. Then, in the second segment, we share more from a very special conversation between Kevin Gosztola and famed Pentagon Papers whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg. Ellsberg spoke with Kevin last month on the occasion of the release of Kevin's book Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange. In part two of this interview, Ellsberg shares information about his historical relations with the press, as well as his pessimistic view of today's US press. We share it in honor of Daniel Ellsberg Week. NOTES: Kevin Gosztola is the managing editor of Shadowproof, and also writes at The Dissenter. He has covered the Julian Assange legal proceedings in the UK from their beginning, as well as other press-freedom and whistleblower cases. His new book on the Assange case, Guilty of Journalism is now available in bookstores. Daniel Ellsberg is best known for leaking classified Pentagon documents in 1971, which revealed covert operations against North Vietnam, as well as secret assessments that the war could not be won, and executive-branch lies to Congress and the US public. In the decades since then, Ellsberg has remained an antiwar activist, and an ally of whistleblowers. The news of his recent diagnosis of an inoperable cancer has prompted press-freedom advocates to declare a week of appreciation for Ellsberg, to begin Monday April 24. Kevin Gosztola, journalist and editor of Shadowproof, discusses his latest book, Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange (2023) detailing the profound injustice of the case against Julian Assange. Historicising the political background to the case against Assange, Gosztola covers the fundamentally undemocratic nature of the Espionage Act (1918) which works against free speech principles and freedom of the press while this act also protects entrenched corruption. Gosztola elaborates the abuses the US government has enacted upon journalists and whistleblowers who have told the truth while public officials have gotten away, unpunished, for their criminal acts and policies such that Assange has been held accountable as a publisher of war crimes while those who have enacted these war crimes have not faced justice. Gosztola analyses how both Democratic and Republican administrations, mainstream news outlets, the CIA, the FBI, the Justice Department, and other powerful forces have all conspired to condemn Assange in retaliation for exposing the extent of US torture, rendition, and war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan while evidencing how Assange was intentially made to “look like a bum” by major media as Assange was marched in front of the cameras in a dishevelled state in order to posture him as looking like he belongs in prison. NOTE: This interview was not produced as part of the "Unauthorized Disclosure" podcast, but it is shared here to help give Stefania and her book some additional exposure. Italian journalist Stefania Maurizi partnered with WikiLeaks and covered military reports on the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars and US diplomatic cables related to Italy and the Vatican. She met WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange multiple times. She saw firsthand how WikiLeaks worked on publications, even as the United States government ramped up its efforts to target and suppress the media organization. Now, the English-translation of Stefania's book, "Secret Power: WikiLeaks and Its Enemies," is out from Pluto Press, and she joins Shadowproof's Kevin Gosztola to discuss this chronicle centered on her time as a media partner. The book also details her efforts to pursue freedom of information lawsuits against the US, United Kingdom, Sweden, and Australia for denying her access to documents related to the prosecution of Assange. Stefania kindly endorsed Kevin's forthcoming book on the Assange case, and Kevin is pleased to be able to show his support for Stefania's work and share this interview.

This week's program begins with an update from Kevin Gosztola on the Julian Assange legal case in the UK, including the recent ruling by the Home Secretary authorizing Assange's extradition to the U.S. Gosztola explains why Assange didn't receive an impartial hearing from the UK authorities and what this portends for press freedoms worldwide. In the second half-hour, Nolan Higdon looks at the recent Supreme Court opinion reversing Roe vs. Wade, and asks why national-level Democratic Party politicians never took preemptive action to protect abortion rights (the topic of a recent article he and Mickey co-authored at Salon). He and Mickey also discuss the state of the media, including the lessons from the rapid failure of CNN+, the cable network's futile attempt to compete with new media by adding a streaming service that did little to garner a broader audience. Notes: Kevin Gosztola is the managing editor of ShadowProof. He has covered the Julian Assange legal proceedings in the UK from the beginning, as well as other press-freedom and whistleblower cases. We will also be working with Black Power Media to release the video versions of these discussions over there over the next couple of weeks, the first one could premiere as soon as this Friday. Gosztola gives a background of the legal process so far. They then discuss just how blatantly political the effort to punish Assange is. There is no legal distinction between Wikileaks and the other publications that reported on these various leaks. But Assange is an outsider who has regularly and effectively embarrassed the U.S. government. And he is paying a severe and disproportionate price for that. At the end, Gosztola lays out why he predicts so-called “rival” governments like Russia and China to soon begin using Assange's case to justify imprisoning Western Journalists.   Discussed on the show: “UK Supreme Court Slams Door On Assange Appeal, Extradition May Be Authorized” (The Dissenter) wikileaks.org  Kevin Gosztola is the managing editor of Shadowproof. The U.S. is ending its 20-year war in Afghanistan and conventional wisdom now holds that it was largely a failure and a waste of more than $2.5 trillion and countless lives. In 2010, Wikileaks published a massive trove of classified documents that exposed the American government's lies about the war. It was a colossal brief against the war state, but instead of thanking Assange for his service to the truth, he remains imprisoned in London, fighting extradition and prosecution in the U.S. Kelley and Dan talk to journalist and Shadowproof managing editor Kevin Gosztola about the current state of the case against Julian and the press freedoms at stake as the government is determined to make him an example. We also talk about the role of whistleblowers during the post-9/11 wars, as well as the crisis surrounding the current withdrawal of Afghanistan. More from Kevin Gosztola:The Afghanistan War and the dissenters we should've listened to -- 8/17/21Drone whistleblower Daniel Hale receives 45-month sentence for releasing drone documents -- 7/27/21 Subscribe at crashingthewarparty.substack.com

The gravest threat to press freedom right now is the US government's attempt to prosecute Julian Assange. The work of Assange, and more broadly Wikileaks has been a great service to the world. Through their work, they removed some of the cloud of secrecy that allows the most powerful figures in the US empire to commit crimes with immunity. Matt was joined by Kevin Gosztola to discuss the US persecution of Julian Assange, the value of Wikileaks and their revelations, and the plight of whistleblowers more broadly. Kevin is a Journalist who writes at Shadowproof.
