SPOILER WARNING: Details from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and other video games are discussed in this episode and can be considered spoilers. Keep that in mind before you proceed. Week in Geek: Andrew plays Dragon Quest for iOS while Dan watches Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown on Blu-Ray. Games With Feels: Based on a specific experience Andrew had while playing through Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Dan and Andrew discuss video games that have created in them strong emotional responses based on more than just a cutscene and plot point, but when actually playing the game elicits emotional reactions and why that is an important development of the medium. The article about Tomb Raider Dan mentions can be found at knowngriefers.com. A Sad Game About Nuclear Disarmament: Andrew and Dan discuss a hidden cutscene found in the files of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's (that were confirmed by Konami) that will only play if, in the online portion of the game, players decide to lay down their nuclear weapons and employ a digital peace. Based around this Ars Technica article by Kyle Orland, this seems to be the culmination of Hideo Kojima's goals with the Metal Gear Solid series. Please join the official Facebook and Google+ pages for exclusive comment and listener discussion. Thanks to The Lovecraft eZine at http://lovecraftzine.com/ for hosting The Lovecraft Geek page: http://lovecraftzine.com/the-lovecraft-geek-robert-m-price-podcast/. Questions for this podcast: When did Lovecraft's writings start gaining popularity? Do you think there is any validity to the claim - made famous in Shea and Wilson's Illuminatus Trilogy! - that the "Great Old Ones" are somehow derived from the secret lore of Illuminati Cultists? What do you think the film makers may have missed in Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown? It might be fun/interesting to discuss the sudden appearance of the Azathoth monument in Oklahoma. How old were you when you started reading Lovecraft? What is your favorite Lovecraft story? What is your favorite Lovecraftian story not written by Lovecraft? Will Lovecraft ever achieve his rightful place in the ranks of America's literary greats? What Anthology has The Shambler from the Stars, The Haunter of the Dark, and The Shadow from the Steeple? Do you agree with the thesis that von Daniken, et al, owe their inspiration to HPL, or to other literary or fictional, or primarily non-fictional, sources, and not at all to Lovecraft? I was wondering if you'd expand on your "Teenage fundamentalist" years and how you discovered Lovecraft, and how you reconciled the Cthulu Mythos with your Christian beliefs?

It seems we pay tribute to the great HP Lovecraft every few months or so here on Dread Media. It's simply a testament to the impact he's had on the genre. Or maybe it's because I have lost my mind and can't get him out of my head! We take a look at two very different Stuart Gordon adaptations and a documentary this week. First, Jeff and Luke join Desmond to look at the classic Re-Animator. Then Devil Dinosaur Jr. checks out the documentary Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown. Then Brittney joins the three fellas from the first review to look at Dagon. We listen to some Lovecraftian tunes full of non-Euclidean geometry as well: "Release the Kraken" by Clutch, "Reanimator" by The Browns, "The Wait" by Metallica, "The Innsmouth Look" by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, and "Cthulhu" by Beastwars. What better to make you feel woefully insignificant in the universe than an episode of this size? Last weekend Desmond Reddick attended the HP Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, and this week he has more than three hours of footage to share with you. There's several reviews of the films seen at the fest and interview with the likes of: Frank Woodward (director of award-winning documentary Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown), Mars (composer of said documentary and the man behind Dead House Music), Jovanka Vuckovic (editor in chief of Rue Morgue Magazine), Toren Atkinson (from The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets), Sean Branney (from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society) and Andrew Migliore (festival runner and head of Lurker Films). There's also recorded footage of speeches, awards ceremonies and a panel on Lovecraft in Pop Culture. There's also tons of inane and profane chatter with fellow cultists and guest co-hosts DZ (from Cinema Diabolica) and Brother D (from Mail Order Zombie). On top of all that, there's music! "Weird Tales" by Dead House Music, "Main Theme from In Search of Lovecraft" by Troy Sterling Nies, "Lovecrafted" by Dead House Music, "Cultists on Board" and "Sleestack and Yeti" by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, "Neither Dead nor Dreaming" by Troy Sterling Nies from The Call of Cthulhu and "The Innsmouth Look" by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. Sit back, oil up your tentacles, relax and enjoy this massive show. Contact me: feedback@dreadmedia.net, or 206.203.1213.
