Our second episode focused on the films of Stuart Gordon brings us to FROM BEYOND (1986). Troy Guinn joins John Hudson and I as we flip on the Resonator to see the unseen, squishy horrors hiding in the dark. The uncut version of the film has only been widely available since the 2007 DVD release and we discuss some of the things that were spit onto the cutting room floor. The film sports a fantastic cast with Barbara Crampton and Jeffery Combs returning from REANIMATOR with the addition of Ken Foree they form a crime investigation team that gets far more than sane people are ready to accept. We examine the film's story structure and the clever scripting that allows for escalating weirdness without compromising the characters. The wild cinematography is discussed as is the use of colored lighting to represent the shift into visions of the hidden monsters all around us. We talk a little about the film's production as well as our reactions to the movie across the years. Hold onto your pineal glands and step into the attic with us, won't you! If you have anything to say about this film or any others that we have covered thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

Benvenuti in America.

2002's dark psychosexual thriller DEATHBED may have limited production values, but there's a smart and incisive story at the heart of it. By sheer strength of will (and a poor long-term memory), we made it almost a decade on this show without touching one of most HMN movies to ever grace the silver screen. It's 8 o'clock in the F#%KING MORNING and we are joined by full grown sandgroper, Adam Trainer to dig up a couple of unsung antipodean gems. We discuss Fortress (1985), directed by Arch Nicholson, and then Fortress (1992 - no relation), directed by Stuart Gordon. “You will NEVER receive credit for my discovery. Who's gonna believe a talking head? Get a job in a sideshow.” We're elated to finally feature Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR on The Blind Rage Podcast! This cult classic tells the story of Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs), a medical student who has developed a serum that re-animates corpses. But, as we all know, no one is ever the same once they're brought back from the dead.
Guys, don't be alarmed, but I think we just uncovered a government secret (and no, we're not talking about the re-animator fluid). I can't say too much, but it involves the plot of Aladdin, Dan's increasingly disturbing search history, and Scrub Daddy?? And it was all master-minded by Dick Wolf?? Send us a textEpisode 200 is here, and naturally, we celebrate this auspicious occasion by looking back at 1989's, Robot Jox. A movie both Liam and Rob loved as kids, and one that, despite it's cult status, proved to be a surprisingly influential movie. The question however remains (as is always the case on the Hey You Guys Podcast) - does this movie hold up today? Is this the underappreciated sci-fi classic we remember, or has time been especially unkind to Stuart Gordon's Cold War inspired giant robot brawler? Check out the link in the bio to find out.

This week we review Stuart Gordon's 1985 schlock classic: Re-animator. Does it go too far for modern audiences? Listen to find out. Synopsis Loosely based off of H.P. Lovecraft's short story “Herbert West - Reanimator” this film stars Jeffery Combs as Herbert West, a weird genius science student that just arrived at the Miskatonic University. He immediately clashes with his professor in asserting superior knowledge over theories surrounding brain death, and makes him an enemy. Also in his class is Dan Cain, who rents a room to Herbert. Dan is dating the dean's daughter and is mainly in this movie to be choked. As Herbert West experiments with a new serum, he discovers he has unlocked the secret to reanimating the dead. After confirming it's efficacy with small animals, he seeks to experiment on dead humans. Review of Re-Animator Re-animator pure B-movie schlock done right. It pulls no punches with intense gore, nudity, and dark humor. It's the spiritual sci-fi counterpart to Evil Dead, which came out four years earlier. Dennis Paoli, the writer, came from the world of experimental theater in Chicago, and he brought a solid foundation with a surprisingly tight script. Both him and the director Stuart Gordon wanted to create an homage to Frankenstein, and succeeded with Re-Animator. It really does recapture some of the straight faced humor of the original 1930s Frankenstein, but turns up everything to 11. The special effects are sometimes laughably bad, but still endearing. Particularly the reanimated psycho cat is like something off of a cheap SNL sketch, but still ends up being very entertaining. They didn't even try to get a rating, since it would most likely get an X. Somehow they still toe the line for decency, editing some shots just right before they get too exploitative to ruin the fun. Mainly that's what this movie is: A lot of fun. This film should be studied for how to pull off low-budget campy horror. Score 10/10

#frombeyond #stuartgordon #jeffreycombs #barbaracrampton #brianyuzna #cultmovies #cultclassic #cultmoviereview #bodyhorror In 1986, Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, Jeffrey Combs, and Barbara Crampton all reunited for their follow-up to their unexpected hit Re-Animator. While Yuzna was keen to do a direct sequel to Re-Animator (which he would later direct himself), Gordon and the rest of the team wanted to do an original story, piggy-backing off what they had previously learned and delivering something fresh and new. Unfortunately, despite a sizeable investment from producer Charles Band, the film failed to recoup it's $4.5M budget, largely due to the fact that in addition to tepid market, the film failed to receive an R rating from the MPAA, who insisted on labeling it NC-17 and thus drastically lowering its distribution potential. Thankfully, the film became notorious on the VHS Video Nasties circuit, and later in 2013, the film received it's much needed restoration, restoring it to it's full run-time by adding every available scene that had been cut (sadly, there are still some sequences that were lost to the annals of time). Join Jason Peters and Ryan Seybold as they analyze what makes this movie such a fun, slimy, gory classic of mid-80's body horror filmmaking, right here on Esoterica Cinema.
Me enfrento a un miedo personal muy arraigado viendo por fin esta peli de Stuart Gordon, una fábula muy divertida que prefiguraba ya la obsesión de los Band con los muñecos asesinos.
REANIMATOR (1985) was a pivotal moment in horror filmmaking for several reasons. First among them is that it announced the arrival of a major talent behind the camera – director Stuart Gordon. His screen career remains a wonder and with this episode we start a series in which we will examine the entirety of his directorial efforts. We might even take a look at the projects that he was involved with but were directed by others. I am joined by John Hudson to talk about this amazing film. We touch on the original 1922 H.P. Lovecraft story ‘Herbert West – Reanimator' and the creation of this adaptation starting as a possible television show to eventual big screen incarnation we now know. The cast is discussed with a general amazement at the near perfect choices made for each role. We note that even though this was Gordon's first feature film, his years of stage experience seems to have allowed him to understand both actors and audience in ways that translate well to cinema. It would be difficult to find a more sure-footed first movie. We talk about the dark humor that permeates the story including what has been called the world's first visual pun. Mostly we spend our time heaping praise on this one and explaining our love for it so be aware! If you have any comments thebloodypit@gmail.com is where to send them. We'll return to the films of Stuart Gordon as soon as possible. Thank you for listening!
Based on the mentions on another podcast, Andrew loads the final episode of Scare You Movie Mad 2024 with Stuart Gordon's HP Lovecraft adaptation from the mid-90s, and Johnny discusses post-birthday malaise and missing out on Lin-Manuel Miranda's new Warriors musical adaptation because time has been unkind. Anna Kendrick's directorial debut is discussed as well as the continual fallout of Joker: Folie A Deux.
American Psycho is a 2000 satirical horror film directed by Mary Harron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner. Based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, it stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a New York City investment banker who apparently leads a double life as a serial killer. Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Samantha Mathis, Cara Seymour, Justin Theroux, and Reese Witherspoon appear in supporting roles. The film blends horror and black comedy to satirize 1980s yuppie culture and consumerism, exemplified by Bateman. Stuart Gordon's post-apocalyptic sci-fi featuring gladiatorial battles between giant mechs has to be one of Empire Pictures' most instantly recognisable titles, sitting proudly on video rental stores worldwide. Starring Gary Graham and Anne-Marie Johnson as the brave robot jockeys and Paul Koslo as their ruthless enemy, Robot Jox could be the brightest and breeziest dystopian action movie ever made. It was also one of the most ambitious film Charles Band's mini-major studio ever attempted, and may have precipitated the fall of his Empire! But does it live up to our childhood memories? Bree Turner stars as a woman who takes an ill-fated trip down the titular pass. She encounters a backwoods murderer whose whole shtick is a touch too familiar. Don Coscarelli directed the first four 'Phantasm' films, 'Bubba Ho-Tep,' and 'John Dies at the End,' among others. With only 20 minutes on the clock, the duo discuss topics that include survivalism, horror comics, and indie rock. Will they find the brevity to power them through to the next episode (Stuart Gordon's Dreams In The Witch House), or will the time constraint prove too challenging to succeed? It's not Stuart Gordon's best Lovecraft adaptation, but Masters of Horror's sophomore efforts gives your favorite sophomoric podcasters plenty to discuss. It's time for a trip to ye olde Rhode Island on the latest (Pod)Casters of Horror as Bennett and Jim discuss the first of Stuart Gordon's episodes, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's The Dreams in the Witch House. Walter (Ezra Godden) begins having horrible dreams of a witch and a rat-faced man. Give it a listen to hear Bennett's thoughts on the difference between hitting yourself in the head versus hitting your head on something and much, much more. Created by Mick Garris, Masters of Horror was a two-season series on Showtime that challenged genre legends to create an hour-long horror film. Follow along as Bennett and Jim are forced to spend no more than 20 minutes discussing each episode from the first season of the series or face a room full of poisonous gas.
Bennett Glace and Jim Hickcox are podcasting for their lives this Halloween season by talking through every episode of Season 1 of Showtime's 'Masters of Horror.' Jim and Bennett made a near-fatal mistake when they took a drive down a winding mountain pass. The pair barely survived an accident and they may soon wish they hadn't. Jigsaw himself has a challenge for them: record podcast episodes for each episode in 'Masters of Horror' Season 1. The catch? They can't talk for more than 20 minutes or the room will fill with poison gas. Will the pair make it through all 13 episodes of the series without betraying Jigsaw's unconscionable constraints of brevity? Created by Mick Garris, Masters of Horror was a two-season series on Showtime that challenged genre legends to create an hour-long horror film. Check out the introduction to (Pod)Casters of Horror and stay tuned for discussions of underrated work from site-favorite filmmakers like Tobe Hooper, Stuart Gordon, and Larry Cohen, and horror icons such as John Carpenter and Dario Argento.

Re-Animator (1985), From Beyond (1986), and Dagon (2001) Bringing the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft to the screen is not an easy task. Much of the horror Lovecraft talked about wasn't described or explained too much, leaving it up to the reader. But when director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, and writer Dennis Paoli got together to adapt Lovecraft's 1922 story "Herbert West - Re-Animator" for a movie, they changed cinema forever. Not only did they show us more than Lovecraft would ever dream of, they created a perfect blend of outrageous horror, gore, and bizarre imagery that would immediately put them in the horror history books. The following year, they took another short story, From Beyond, first published in 1934, and showed even more strange, bizarre, and gooey things we'd seen before, going beyond then what the short story told us. Then 15 years later, these three deranged creators returned to Lovecraft to take us to a fishing village filled with very unusual citizens, in 2001's Dagon. While Gordon's filmography might not be filled with classic after classic, when he hit a home run, usually he was working with Yuzna and Paoli. Films mentioned in this episode: Black Gloves (2017), Color Out of Space (2019), Dagon (2001), Dust Devil (1992), From Beyond (1986), Halloween (1978), Hardware (1990), Lord of Tears (2013), Re-Animator (1985), Shrews Nest (2014), To Let (2006), Witching and Bitching (2013)

Body Horror represents a loss of identity or a transformation of self. Its terror stems from lack of control or defiance of the laws of nature and represents a large subgenre within film. These films are often special effects ladened and filled with disturbing imagery. Jerry & Matt look at two prime examples of this with Stuart Gordon's From Beyond from 1986 and James Wan's Malignant from 2021.
On this episode, the Spoop Bois Aaron and Derek cover 1987's killer toy flick "Dolls" directed by Stuart Gordon. They talk about the role of toys as a childhood attachment and gateway to fantasy, the exploration of younger generations moving away from toys, and the strange juxtaposition of kindertrauma and adult horror through the movie. They also touch on the history of dolls and killer toy movies, how the plot is simple and surreal, uncanny valley with living toys, whether or not the sub-genre is genuinely scary, among many other topics about the film. Derek can remember every toy he had as a kid. And they remember Aaron!
