Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Financial Times: We must slow down the race to God-like AI, published by trevor on April 13, 2023 on LessWrong. The article itself is paywalled, so here you go (you can often circumvent paywalls by typing the article's name into google search's news tab). This isn't actually bad news; it means that the FT will reach a smaller and more elite audience (and hopefully with above average quant skills), rather than the NYT which simply maximizes the number of views by being the most popular outlet. Notably, this story not only gives AI alignment positive coverage, but it is also extremely close to the front page on Financial Times's website, and with a very striking image to boot (possibly the most important factor). Of course, it's still social media spread that largely decide the fate of these articles, not the news outlet's website, so we can't know for sure how helpful it is. This article was written by Ian Hogarth, "yesterday" according to the page. It's important to bear in mind that being published in a major news outlet is a stamp of approval that most people take extremely seriously when entering a field for the first time, and that factor is a much bigger deal than whether the author got everything right on their first try. As a side note, Raemon has recently recommended these sources as a good way to explain AI risk to someone for the first time: Superintelligence FAQ (very accessible to layfolk) The Alignment Problem from a Deep Learning Perspective (written with ML researchers in mind) (I'll work on compiling more of these soon) On a cold evening in February I attended a dinner party at the home of an artificial intelligence researcher in London, along with a small group of experts in the field. He lives in a penthouse apartment at the top of a modern tower block, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city's skyscrapers and a railway terminus from the 19th century. Despite the prime location, the host lives simply, and the flat is somewhat austere. During dinner, the group discussed significant new breakthroughs, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and DeepMind's Gato, and the rate at which billions of dollars have recently poured into AI. I asked one of the guests who has made important contributions to the industry the question that often comes up at this type of gathering: how far away are we from “artificial general intelligence”? AGI can be defined in many ways but usually refers to a computer system capable of generating new scientific knowledge and performing any task that humans can. Most experts view the arrival of AGI as a historical and technological turning point, akin to the splitting of the atom or the invention of the printing press. The important question has always been how far away in the future this development might be. The AI researcher did not have to consider it for long. “It's possible from now onwards,” he replied. This is not a universal view. Estimates range from a decade to half a century or more. What is certain is that creating AGI is the explicit aim of the leading AI companies, and they are moving towards it far more swiftly than anyone expected. As everyone at the dinner understood, this development would bring significant risks for the future of the human race. “If you think we could be close to something potentially so dangerous,” I said to the researcher, “shouldn't you warn people about what's happening?” He was clearly grappling with the responsibility he faced but, like many in the field, seemed pulled along by the rapidity of progress. When I got home, I thought about my four-year-old who would wake up in a few hours. As I considered the world he might grow up in, I gradually shifted from shock to anger. It felt deeply wrong that consequential decisions potentially affecting every life on Earth could be made by a small grou...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: AGI in sight: our look at the game board, published by Andrea Miotti on February 18, 2023 on LessWrong. From our point of view, we are now in the end-game for AGI, and we (humans) are losing. When we share this with other people, they reliably get surprised. That's why we believe it is worth writing down our beliefs on this. 1. AGI is happening soon. Significant probability of it happening in less than 5 years. Five years ago, there were many obstacles on what we considered to be the path to AGI. But in the last few years, we've gotten: Powerful Agents (Agent57, GATO, Dreamer V3) Reliably good Multimodal Models (StableDiffusion, Whisper, Clip) Just about every language tasks (GPT3, ChatGPT, Bing Chat) Human and Social Manipulation Robots (Boston Dynamics) AIs that are superhuman at just about any task we can (or simply bother to) define a benchmark for We don't have any obstacle left in mind that we don't expect to get overcome in more than 6 months after efforts are invested to take it down. Forget about what the social consensus is. If you have technical understanding of current AIs, do you truly believe there are any major obstacles left? The kind of problems that AGI companies could reliably not tear down with their resources? If you do, state so in the comments, but please do not state what those obstacles are. 2. We haven't solved AI Safety, and we don't have much time left. We are very close to AGI. But how good are we at safety right now? Well. No one knows how to get LLMs to be truthful. LLMs make things up, constantly. It is really hard to get them not to do this, and we don't know how to do this at scale. Optimizers quite often break their setup in unexpected ways. There have been quite a few examples of this. But in brief, the lessons we have learned are: Optimizers can yield unexpected results Those results can be very weird (like breaking the simulation environment) Yet very few extrapolate from this and find these as worrying signs No one understands how large models make their decisions. Interpretability is extremely nascent, and mostly empirical. In practice, we are still completely in the dark about nearly all decisions taken by large models. RLHF and Fine-Tuning have not worked well so far. Models are often unhelpful, untruthful, inconsistent, in many ways that had been theorized in the past. We also witness goal misspecification, misalignment, etc. Worse than this, as models become more powerful, we expect more egregious instances of misalignment, as more optimization will push for more and more extreme edge cases and pseudo-adversarial examples. No one knows how to predict AI capabilities. No one predicted the many capabilities of GPT3. We only discovered them after the fact, while playing with the models. In some ways, we keep discovering capabilities now thanks to better interfaces and more optimization pressure by users, more than two years in. We're seeing the same phenomenon happen with ChatGPT and the model behind Bing Chat. We are uncertain about the true extent of the capabilities of the models we're training, and we'll be even more clueless about upcoming larger, more complex, more opaque models coming out of training. This has been true for a couple of years by now. 3. Racing towards AGI: Worst game of chicken ever. The Race for powerful AGIs has already started. There already are general AIs. They just are not powerful enough yet to count as True AGIs. Actors Regardless of why people are doing it, they are racing for AGI. Everyone has their theses, their own beliefs about AGIs and their motivations. For instance, consider: AdeptAI is working on giving AIs access to everything. In their introduction post, one can read “True general intelligence requires models that can not only read and write, but act in a way that is helpful to users. ...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Parameter Scaling Comes for RL, Maybe, published by 1a3orn on January 24, 2023 on LessWrong. TLDR Unlike language models or image classifiers, past reinforcement learning models did not reliably get better as they got bigger. Two DeepMind RL papers published in January 2023 nevertheless show that with the right techniques, scaling up RL model parameters can increase both total reward and sample-efficiency of RL agents -- and by a lot. Return-to-scale has been key for rendering language models powerful and economically valuable; it might also be key for RL, although many important questions remain unanswered. Intro Reinforcement learning models often have very few parameters compared to language and image models. The Vision Transformer has 2 billion parameters. GPT-3 has 175 billion. The slimmer Chinchilla, trained in accord with scaling laws emphasizing bigger datasets, has 70 billion. By contrast, until a month ago, the largest mostly-RL models I knew of were the agents for Starcraft and Dota2, AlphaStar and OpenAI5, which had 139 million and 158 million parameters. And most RL models are far smaller, coming in well under 50 million parameters. The reason RL hasn't scaled up the size of its models is simple -- doing so generally hasn't made them better. Increasing model size in RL can even hurt performance. MuZero Reanalyze gets worse on some tasks as you scale network size. So does a vanilla SAC agent. There has been good evidence for scaling model size in somewhat... non-central examples of RL. For instance, offline RL agents trained from expert examples, such as DeepMind's 1.2-billion parameter Gato or Multi-Game Decision Transformers, clearly get better with scale. Similarly, RL from human feedback on language models generally shows that larger LM's are better. Hybrid systems such as PaLM SayCan benefit from larger language models. But all these cases sidestep problems central to RL -- they have no need to balance exploration and exploitation in seeking reward. In the typical RL setting -- there has generally been little scaling and little evidence for the efficacy of scaling. (Although there has not been no evidence.) None of the above means that the compute spent on RL models is small or that compute scaling does nothing for them. AlphaStar used only a little less compute than GPT-3, and AlphaGo Zero used more, because both of them trained on an enormous number of games. Additional compute predictably improves performance of RL agents. But, rather than getting a bigger brain, almost all RL algorithms spend this compute by (1) training on an enormous number of games (2) or (if concerned with sample-efficiency) by revisiting the games that they've played an enormous number of times. So for a while RL has lacked: (1) The ability to scale up model size to reliably improve performance. (2) (Even supposing the above were around) Any theory like the language-model scaling laws which would let you figure out how to allocate compute between model size / longer training. My intuition is that the lack of (1), and to a lesser degree the lack of (2), is evidence that no one has stumbled on the "right way" to do RL or RL-like problems. It's like language modeling when it only had LSTMS and no Transformers, before the frighteningly straight lines in log-log charts appeared. In the last month, though, two RL papers came out with interesting scaling charts, each showing strong gains to parameter scaling. Both were (somewhat unsurprisingly) from DeepMind. This is the kind of thing that leads me to think "Huh, this might be an important link in the chain that brings about AGI." The first paper is "Mastering Diverse Domains Through World Models", which names its agent DreamerV3. The second is "Human-Timescale Adaptation in an Open-Ended Task Space", which names its agent Adaptive...
