Two years ago, pop-leaning singer/songwriter Mackenzie Nicole had hit her rock bottom. With a hit record (2018's The Edge) at a young age, at a time when she should've been on top of the world, she nearly gave up. But after acknowledging and getting help for her mental illness—which she calls “the darkness”—Mackenzie fought back. She catalogued her journey from acceptance to recovery in her 2020 release The Mystic. In this episode of For Songs, Mackenzie talks about how her journey to fight back led to the development of The Mystic. She discusses her great love for literature and how confronting the Darkness head on has given her new resolve to push forward. We also detail her progression as a pop artist in an era where musical genres are fast disappearing. Listen in and if you or anyone you know is suffering from mental illness, let them know that there is hope. There is a future.
In the Spring of 2018, singer, songwriter, and Strange Main artist Mackenzie Nicole unveiled her full-length debut album, The Edge, to critical acclaim. Its songs tallied over 1 million Spotify streams, and her videos totaled over 8 million-plus views as she played to sold-out crowds coast-to-coast. After nearly a decade of diligently grinding, the year marked a much deserved and significant artistic breakthrough for the then 18-year-old. All her hard work was starting to pay off, however, for Mackenzie it was the worst time in her life. On a deeper level, she suffered a mental breakdown and fell into thoughts of suicide. Through a combination of self-actualization and therapy, she returned stronger than ever before. When her psychiatrist diagnosed her with bipolar 1 disorder, she says she felt a sense of relief. She started writing and recording and shares this struggle and subsequent victory by way of her latest full-length album Mystic. https://www.instagram.com/therealmackenzienicole https://www.facebook.com/realmackenzienicole https://twitter.com/mackenzienicole The YANApodcast: Instagram: @the_yanapodcast New episodes every Tuesday! Welcome to the Mindful Conversations series where we share the stories of most incredible humans. This time we feature the incredible superstar singer Mackenzie Nicole. We talk about her newly released album "MYSTIC", her journey to mental wellness and the inspiration behind her music.MACKENZIE NICOLE’S MYSTIC SHORT FILM OUT NOW ON STRANGE FILMS & IS COMING TO AMAZON PRIME VIDEO SOONA VISUAL AND MUSIC JOURNEY TO MENTAL WELLNESS: https://youtu.be/tjj_JU_mT8EMYSTIC ALBUM OUT NOWIn the spring of 2018, Mackenzie Nicole unveiled her debut album, The Edge. Its songs tallied over 1 million Spotify streams, and her videos totaled 8 million-plus views. On the outside, Mackenzie seemed to be a happy and fearless 18-year-old whose hard work and talent was starting to pay off. On the inside, she was literally fighting for her life.Mystic Short Film out now - https://youtu.be/tjj_JU_mT8EShe explains, “The first time I remember contemplating suicide, I was six years old, so I’ve been no stranger to mental illness. However, I learned how to cohabitate with my demons, viewing my suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, and OCD as a sort of haunted house in which I was forced to reside.” She continues, “When I thought I could suffer no more surprises at the hands of my mental state, I was blindsided by an acute mental breakdown that overtook my entire life. When my psychiatrist diagnosed me with bipolar I disorder, I felt a sense of relief.”As Mackenzie dove into her ongoing journey of recovery, she also had a responsibility to start writing and recording a new album. With a sense of obligation to her own mental health and a need to reach anybody else that might be struggling, Mystic was born. “I knew immediately the story must be told. I promptly began recording an autobiographical chronicle of my odyssey through the stages of mental health.”Tapping into a reflective and ethereal vibe throughout the songs and visual story, she shares her innermost insecurities, struggles, and triumphs, hoping to connect with others through shared experiences. Mystic is more than a concept album. It is a personal yet relatable journal both musically and visually. “This is an important topic,” says Mackenzie. “I wanted to handle it in an artistic and personal way. If you have been in the dark place, you know it is a little monster always ready to destroy you. I hope people walk away with a greater understanding of themselves and others.Mystic is out now on Strange Main (the pop music division of Strange Music.)Follow Mackenzie Nicole at:https://www.instagram.com/therealmackenzienicolehttps://www.facebook.com/realmackenzienicolehttps://twitter.com/mackenzienicoleWatch Mackenzie’s TEDx Ted Talk. Host of Mari Fong interviews Mackenzie Nicole (singer-songwriter) and Becca Lane (NAMI Philadelphia) on bipolar disorder and suicidal thoughts. September is Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month, and pop artist Mackenzie Nicole shares her story on Bipolar 1 Disorder, having suicidal thoughts at the young age of 6 years old, her mental breakdown, the personality and behavior changes that came with it, and the mood swings of mania and depression that are part of bipolar. How her new album Mystic is a musical tribute to her mental health odyssey, and the Mystic Film being a both a visual and musical telling of her story through a series of very personal music videos. Mackenzie also talks about OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), what saved her at a young when experiencing mental illness, the difficulty of accepting help, and why she was overjoyed after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. What she learned in recovery, her thoughts on self-medication, having an addictive personality, her experience with therapy and medication, and why she’s now the happiest and most creative she’s ever been. Next, we have mental health expert Becca Lane of NAMI Philadelphia who explains what Bipolar Disorder 1 and 2 are, how often mood swings occur, how bipolar can often be disguised as other mood disorders such as depression, anxiety or ADHD. The coping skills, therapies, and medications often used specifically for bipolar. Becca also weaves in her own story of bipolar disorder, how she successfully manages her recovery, and the joyful life you can achieve after finding the right help, and NAMI Philly’s “Ending the Silence” Program. “Be brave, ask for help, and be persistent in finding the mental help that you need.” * THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING US at checkyourheadpodcast.com or on our patreon.com page. Mackenzie Nicole is a very special musical artist. Her new album Mystic shares her journey with her mental health, and the poignant story and wonderful execution of the album belies her age. Our experience interviewing Mackenzie left us looking for words to properly describe her. All the words that came to mind seemed to start with the letter U. She is undeniable, unfiltered, unbelievable and unstoppable. Those kind of qualities make for a great interview. That's why even after 90 minutes with Mackenzie we felt like we had barely started. There's just so much to unpack with a unique person like her. We start this episode with Mackenzie Nicole talking about her previous album, The Edge. She lets us know how events from it led to her mental health breakdown. From there we go into the process of building her life back up, and the role her music played. We go into detail on the music videos that combine to make a short film for Mystic, as it shows the journey of The Girl. There's lots of behind the scenes moments discussed, both the funny, surreal and emotional process that the process was. Plus, we get an incredible account of her Ted Talks regarding the album and her mental health journey, including some incredible revelations you would never imagine from watching it. Plus, her relationship with her guitarist, meeting Snoop Dogg, Her parents influence and about a billion other things. Yeah, this one has pretty much everything, so check it out and be on the lookout for the return of Mackenzie Nicole to the We Talk Music podcast in the very near future. There’s something wrong in the U.S., and it’s pretty difficulty to talk about. More people are struggling with mental health than ever before, and that extends to musicians. Strange Music artist, Mackenzie Nicole, breaks down the idea behind her new album, "Mystic," and talks about her struggles that led to its creation. This episode has content that may not be suitable for children under 10 years old.
