How do you turn a Deloitte internship research project into a nonprofit that empowers young girls to thrive? That’s one of the things we learned when we talked to Julia Haried, entrepreneur and Deloitte consultant. During this episode, Julia talks about MakerGirl, an education program she co-founded that uses 3D printing to teach and excite young girls about the power of technology at a critical developmental age in their lives.

BRINK OF GREATNESS

Every young girl and boy have been asked the question; 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' For boys, it was an athlete, astronaut, doctor, scientist, policeman, or a fire fighter. For girls, a teacher, veterinarian, singer, actress, dancer, or artist would have been a typical answer. The answer kids give to that question is changing, and if Stephanie Hein, Julia Haried or Elizabeth Engele have anything to say about it, those typical stereotype answers will become a thing of the past. There has been great progress over the years, but consider that women make up half of the total college-educated workforce in the United States, however they are only 29 percent of the overall science and engineering workforce. “One of the main reasons why girls aren’t interested in the STEM fields is that there is a lack of role models," explains Stephanie Hein. "Young girls don’t see many women in STEM fields and because of that, they don’t see themselves pursuing those fields. If more women pursue careers in STEM, then that can serve as a significant source of inspiration for young girls.” Founded in a social entrepreneurship class at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Co-Founders, Julia Haried and Elizabeth Engele, were inspired by the question "What bothers you?"  They want to inspire girls to be active in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, so that young ladies can begin that process of understanding that they can do anything that they can dream up or print out in this case. MakerGirl was created to inspire young girls to pursue STEM fields through 3D printing sessions. Julia and Elizabeth hired Stephanie Hein as CEO of MakerGirl in the fall of 2018; Stephanie has her own unique story in how she became involved. But it was when Stephanie raised money through a Kickstarter program, and took the program on the road from coast to coast to inspire young girls to get involved⏤that changed everything! The story continues on the Brink of Greatness Podcast… The Next Leap Forward Before her role as CEO, Stephanie Hein served as MakerGirl’s Engagement Director in 2016 and assisted raising over $30,000 through a Kickstarter campaign and organized #MakerGirlGoesMobile, a 10,000 mile cross-country road trip that brought 3D printing sessions to over 1,000 girls in rural and underserved communities across the country. They are preparing now for the next cross-country trip as they take to the road once again to raise awareness and help provide a path forward for the next generation of big-thinkers. Lizzy Engele is an activist, creative, and life-long learner in the corporate and social impact communities.  She is the co-founder and executive director of MakerGirl, a 501c3 that has educated over 3K girls in STEM, and she uses her nonprofit knowledge at LinkedIn as a Nonprofit Account Executive.  She is a member of Park Community Church where she serves in the children's ministry, and she also enjoys staying active and baking.  Her passion for technology stems from how she's witnessed its capability to bring people together for economic opportunity as well as building and supporting visionary companies.    LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS - Be as focused on your volunteers/followers as those you are serving. Become interested in their success. - You make time for what is a priority for you. - Drive forward your product or program from your own personal motivations. - "Everybody wins... In order for an organization to succeed, every individual person has to succeed on their own level." - "Anything can be resolved through communication." This can be as simple as a quick phone if made soon after a problem surfaces. - "Just do it..." Ask yourself, "How can I get started tomorrow?" ABOUT MakerGirl - Educates 7-10 year-old girls in STEM. - Offers 1.5 hour sessions focused on 3D printing. - Wants to reach 10,000 girls by 2023 (see links to donate or join the MakerGirl community below). QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION - What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? "Do one thing every day that scares you." - Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Flexible, humble, and hard working. - What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? "What were my wins and my failures, and what were my team's wins and my team's failures this week?" - What book would you recommend to leaders? Shoe Dog by Phil Knight - If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Reflect on your personal wins and what you wish you would have done differently in order to be more effective and to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses in order to better serve the people around you. - As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” Why not. It makes you look at the world through the lens of possibility.  Website: https://makergirl.us/ Share MakerGirl's story here. | Donate to MakerGirl here. | Connect with elizabeth@makergirl.us if you'd like to be on their $50K fundraiser planning committee in the Fall or host your own MakerGirl fundraiser! Making The Play with Dave Briglio

This week my guest is Stephanie Hein, CEO of Maker Girl – an organization founded in a social entrepreneurship class at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where two young women were empowered by the question "What bothers you?" Motivated by their past experiences, MakerGirl was created to inspire young girls to pursue STEM fields through 3D printing sessions. The Maker Girl Story: Two diverse, young women began a Social Entrepreneurship class at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Little did they know, they would start a movement that would impact the life trajectories of young girls and women in their dreams for a creating a promising future. Mid-way into the semester, they were posed and challenged with a simple question, “What bothers you?” Group member Julia Haried quickly drew from her past research about the lack of women in C-suite positions. Their conversation moved to, “Why is that?” and “What can we do to change these issues?” From this inspiration, Engele and Haried created MakerGirl--a mission driven program about more than 3D printing. MakerGirl seeks to inspire young girls to be active in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and to continue to say “Yes!” to future challenges by offering design and 3D printing workshops.Check them out at: https://makergirl.us/About Stephanie: Stephanie is a graduate of Educational Studies Master’s program at the University of Michigan as well as a former student-athlete and Molecular Biology major at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She gained educational programming experience at her former position at Toyology Toys. Hein served as MakerGirl’s Engagement Director in 2016 and assisted raising over $30,000 through a Kickstarter campaign and organized #MakerGirlGoesMobile, a 10,000 mile cross-country road trip that brought 3D printing sessions to over 1,000 girls in rural and underserved communities across the country.

WTFFF?! 3D Printing Podcast Volume Three: 3D Print Tips | 3D Print Tools | 3D Start Point

According to a recent report by Microsoft, girls and young women remain less likely to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math; in short, STEM. In that regard, the lack of representation of women in STEM-related careers continues to grow as an area of focus. Mary Hadley from MakerGirl talks about their Girl STEM Education and mentorship program. MakerGirl is an organization that started in 2014 at the University of Illinois that introduces young girls in the Champaign-Urbana area to the exciting world of STEM fields through 3D printing sessions and creative activities. They have over 3,000 girls that have gone through their program since then. Their goal is to show girls that they can be both analytical and creative in one space.
