Greg Brown: Cockpit Adventures from the Flying Carpet

*FAN MAIL: Text Greg your comments!Flight instructing offers some of the most rewarding flying there is. We experience the joy of fulfilling our students' dreams of flight, become better pilots ourselves in the process, and develop lifelong friendships with many of those we teach. But among hours and hours of routine teaching and flying, there are occasional hard lessons, too, most often unanticipated. And those hard lessons are generally even more eye-opening and profound for us instructors than for our students. Above all, we learn that while maintaining a relaxed cockpit learning environment, we must never become complacent. Okay, everyone, hop aboard my Flying Carpet, buckle into the pilot's seat, and prepare for takeoff on Flight Number 36, “Bowling Alley Hot Dogs.” Support the showhttps://gregbrownflyingcarpet.com/podcast/https://www.facebook.com/GregBrownFlyingCarpet/https://www.instagram.com/gregbrownflyingcarpet/

From engineering serendipity to creating consistent rituals and empathetic leadership, Darcy offers actionable insights into creating inclusive, connected thriving communities and environments for remote and distributed workers and teams.     TAKEAWAYS   [01:27] Darcy's early and enduring passion is hospitality and helping people feel they belong.   [02:34] At Airbnb, Darcy pilots early remote work initiatives to explore flexible work models.   [04:06] Darcy leaves Airbnb as they lack remote work flexibility and moves to a rural area.   [04:23] TaxJar's leadership wants to take the company fully remote, so Darcy joins for the challenge.   [05:10] The vision is to build a strong company with a strong product and strong profits while people enjoy their lives.   [06:00] Darcy works with academic researchers to study and codify culture in a fully remote organization.   [06:56] How do you architect culture where there are no physical walls?   [07:40] Codifying culture for scale involves understanding the founders' DNA and origins.   [08:56] Deep listening sessions to co-create with employees and reveal how values show up.   [09:20] Transitioning from an SMB to a mid-market culture means balancing collaboration with structure.   [11:16] During the pandemic, TaxJar's remote model enables significant growth and low attrition.   [12:05] Darcy wants to help people and prove remote working works, but it gets exhausting.   [14:06] To normalize family-friendly environments, TaxJar's CEO has to set the example.   [15:00] They are proud of having top talent who are really empathetic.   [16:29] At Stripe, Darcy observes strong identity tied to the office causing hybrid work challenges.   [18:26] Redesigning hybrid work, prompting leaders to model flexibility and track energy patterns.   [19:56] Understanding offsites, her team considers how to include remote participants equitably.   [20:34] Why to create experiences for remote workers that rival office-based interactions.   [22:18] Darcy describes Tulsa Remote and attracting remote workers to boost economic growth.   [23:34] The benefits of industry diversification and reverse the brain drain for Tulsa.   [24:33] Why people choose to move to Tulsa and partnering to solve local problems.   [25:09] “Engineering serendipity” to connect remote workers with local communities.   [26:28] Piloting a workation program that fosters deep connections between participants and locals.   [28:10] The pilot program results in nine out of twelve participants moving to Tulsa.   [29:28] Darcy personalizes participants' experiences connecting them with relevant locals.   [32:59] How other cities have increasing willingness to benefit from digital nomads.   [34:17] The opportunity to create a blueprint for “sister cities” ready to create consistent, impactful remote work experiences.   [37:20] Madeira Friends aim to show the long-term economic benefits of attracting digital nomads.   [39:26] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: To improve hybrid and remote outcomes, lean into cultural architecture. This advice comes ahead of the busiest shopping days in the lead up to Christmas. Drone use is on the rise and the number of drones and operators registered in Ireland has risen exponentially over past number of years. Safety is paramount, and so since 2021, the IAA has registered over 8,000 drone operators and trained over 21,500 drone pilots. This year has seen a 24% increase in the number of pilots trained. Consumers who own a drone that is over 250gr or has a camera, are legally required to register as a drone operator. If you are a drone operator, drone safety is your responsibility. You need to ensure you are always in control of the drone and that you remain compliant with the law. Jim Gavin, Chief Operations Officer of the Irish Aviation Authority commenting on drone safety said: "Drone use has increased significantly in recent years. Piloting a drone is fun but it comes with responsibility to fly it safely while respecting people's privacy. Remember a drone is not a toy and can have very serious consequences if it collides with a person, an animal or another aircraft. So, if you do get a drone this Christmas, remember it's your responsibility to know the rules and fly it safely." Veronica Mariti Sesoko, Drone Innovation Partnership (DIP) Engagement Lead added: "As drones top Christmas wish lists, it's crucial to remember they are not toys. Fly responsibly by checking current regulations and following safe practices. The Drone Innovation Partnership (DIP), a collaboration between the Irish Aviation Authority, Dublin City Council, and Maynooth University, is working to ensure drones enhance public services and support emergency responses while keeping our skies safe through active stakeholder engagement, including citizens." "Thankfully the vast majority of drone users are compliant with the regulations. However, we are concerned, with the rapid growth of drone usage, that not all new pilots may be aware of their responsibilities which can lead to unsafe flying. If you see anyone not complying with the regulations, we encourage people to contact the IAA. Reckless use of a drone or inappropriate use of a drone camera may result in prosecution," Enda Walsh, UAS Manager/Drones Manager from the Irish Aviation Authority added. Erik Distler is responsible for overseeing AEG Sustainability, the organization's corporate sustainability program. In this capacity, he focuses on global strategies and tactics that address operational impacts and capture and measure data across key environmental metrics, such as greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and waste reduction. He also supports AEG's global business units in the implementation and execution of sustainability initiatives, manages external partnerships related to sustainability, facilitates the sharing of best practices, and ensures that sustainability is a source of value across the company. Distler has worked at the intersection of environmental and social responsibility in sports and entertainment for more than ten years. Before joining AEG, he built and led the sports-focused sustainability strategy and program at Nike. Prior to Nike, he was with the Green Sports Alliance where he oversaw relationships with corporate partners, live entertainment events, professional sports leagues and clubs, sports governing bodies, and collegiate schools and conferences, as well as working extensively with ESPN. He also spent time as a sustainability consultant with PwC. Distler began his career in accounting and finance, where he worked for Deloitte and The Siegfried Group LLP for the first seven years of his career. He received his Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Sustainable Management from Presidio Graduate School and his Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from Iowa State University, graduating with Honors and High Distinction.. Erik Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: How AEG manages sustainability at large events like music festivals Piloting initiatives at smaller events to apply learnings and replicate at larger events Incorporating reusable materials at events in partnership with Our World Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Erik's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would say have as many conversations as you can. Sustainability departments are often departments and functions that are in service to the business. We tend to operate as internal consultants. So how can we be everywhere at the same time? How can we ensure that every part of the business has the opportunity to build sustainability into their work? How do we consult to provide subject matter expertise to the business? The work we do within the department is measurement and data and setting sustainability targets and all that kind of exists within our function. But it all starts with having conversations. I wouldn't be afraid to sit down with someone and ask them more questions than provide statements on how they feel, how they perceive sustainability, where they feel as though it's working, where it's not working, what can we do more of that really helped build out our sustainability strategy. Do a little bit of a needs assessment on what stakeholders and partners value. The only other thing I'd say too secondary is, don't be afraid to start somewhere. I think we often feel as though the challenges we're up against are audacious and global and all encompassing, and they are. It can sometimes feel like we're out at sea against a massive challenge on our own  when we think of climate issues. That can freeze one up. It can stifle movement. You can feel like, "well, what can I do? I can't possibly make a difference." It's amazing what just taking one small step can lead to. There's been this kind of backlash against incrementalism in the space, like we need big changes, not incremental changes, but I don't know that I agree with that. I think an incremental quick change that you can grow on and iterate from can turn into something very big. So don't be afraid to start somewhere. Start with something that you can measure, for sure. But have those conversations and turn those small steps into big steps. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? There's a lot to be excited about. When realizing the gravity of the issue that we're facing, I think it's important to find sources of encouragement and hopefulness. There's really no other way. There's a line by Walt Kelly from his pogo comic strip many years ago that says, “we are confronted with insurmountable opportunities.” I use that and refer to that a lot. Try to figure out what is the opportunity in front of us and be optimistic about it. I think there's an excitement around the external forces. They're becoming louder and more influential, and that's encouraging. Our fans, our partners, our sponsors, our artists and entertainers. There's more of a voice and more influence that is being laid upon us and expected from us. I think collaboration is increasing cross-sector research companies that are competitive coming together in a pre-competitive way. Higher education institutions are pulling us in to do research that will help us in our business. We're seeing a lot of that. There's also a healthy kind of push, pull and engagement among our partners and sponsors. There's that untapped space with partnerships and sponsorships where it's determining inventory and the assets and how sustainability can be valued and monetized, but the conversations that we're having with partners or potential partners around shared goals, targets, aspirations, and what we can do together to help achieve our individual sustainability goals, kind of matches up. There's a lot of energy and excitement around that. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? One is Thinking in Systems by Donella Meadows. It's a book that'll retrain your brain to consider the interconnectedness of literally everything around you. And then Natural Capitalism by Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins and L. Hunter Lovins. It's that seminal book on environmental economics. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I read Green Bizz, 3BL and Triple Pundit. We get a lot of resources from our longtime partner, Schneider Electric. We've worked with them for many years and they have webinars and lots of sessions and thought leadership that we use a lot. I also keep up on the guidance from the GHG protocol, the EPA, the UN. In our space in particular, there are two organizations that are co- holding up the movement, Green Sports Alliance on the sports side and a more newly formed music sustainability alliance on the music side. We look to these two entities to hold and convene us, and there's a lot of good research and thinking coming out of those orgs as well. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at AEG? Our website, aegworldwide.com. There's an About Us dropdown at the top, and we have a somewhat newly revamped sustainability page and more changes coming. We're building out a microsite off that page when we have our next generation sustainability goals finalized. We'll have all that good stuff up there. We also have case studies or what we call sustainability stories up on that page. Also under About Us, you can read about our social impact and DEI functions as well. We have a Twitter account, we recently rebranded it from AEG One Earth to the handle, @AEGSustain or the account name, AEG sustainability. We're trying to get information up there. And of course, LinkedIn is a great place to reach out to myself or anyone from our sustainability team.

We continue exploring their pilot projects that leverage Web3 technology to build climate resilience, diving deeper into the role of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, how to effectively measure impact, the next steps for scaling their Web3 projects, and much more.--Key Takeaways--The core aspects that make blockchain unique like immutability, transparency, and the ability to reach consensus quickly, are gamechangers in international development efforts. They can increase efficiency by cutting out intermediaries, while making it much easier to monitor and verify the impact of projects. Many developing economies leapfrogged traditional technology like LAN lines and Ethernet, going straight to mobile and wireless technologies. This has resulted in a high level of penetration of wireless tech, which has helped fuel the growth of Web3 in these areas, leading to many exciting innovations. It's important to remember that blockchain is a backend solution when introducing innovations to communities. It is far more important for beneficiaries to be aware of the benefits and values of the project, and how it will improve their lives, rather than the intricacies of the technology behind the innovations. You can slowly educate the community on blockchain and crypto as you go, but it doesn't need to be a part of the initial sales pitch.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode-172-piloting-change-part-2-exploring-web3-innovations-for-real-world-impact-ft-mercy-corps-ventures-empowa-and-atlantis

TLDR - In this episode, we explore how Empowa and Atlantis, supported by Mercy Corps Ventures, are leveraging Web3 technology to scale climate-resilient housing in Mozambique and improve clean water access in India. Learn how blockchain is driving real-world impact through these innovative pilot projects.=========================================In episode 171, which is part 1 of a 2-part series, we're excited to welcome five amazing guests: Njeri Muhia and Abeera Akhtar from Mercy Corps Ventures, Greg Schneider and Marie-Odile Zanders from Empowa, and Irthu Suresh from Atlantis. We explore the pilot projects that Empowa and Atlantis recently completed with the help of Mercy Corps Ventures which leverage Web3 to scale climate-resilient housing in Mozambique and improve clean water access in India. We discuss the key findings, challenges, and impacts of these projects.--Key Takeaways--In Mozambique, it is very difficult for the average individual to purchase a home. This is especially true as many individuals in Africa have informal or inconsistent incomes, making it difficult to get a mortgage. Empowa addresses this through their unique on-chain Rent-to-own project where individuals contribute capital over time to the principle as they pay their rent. When it comes to climate resilience, access to clean water is essential. Currently, access to energy and water is highly centralized in India. However, these centralized networks can be susceptible to climate shocks. To address this, Atlantis explored how decentralized networks can help communities coordinate around clean water access and build greater resiliency to climate shocks. There is a misperception that individuals with low or inconsistent incomes in emerging markets cannot be trusted with loans. However, research has consistently shown that these individuals are highly effective at managing their finances and have very high repayment rates on loans. The important lesson here is that these individuals are bankable if the systems are designed to work for them. When designing Web3 interventions, especially in traditionally underserved and excluded communities, it is important to focus on building solutions that are easy to use and don't require the user to have knowledge of Web3. Blockchain is simply the plumbing behind the initiative. When designing and implementing innovations that disrupt traditional systems, you will encounter and be challenged by incumbent power structures. It is hard to predict what challenges these will pose, so it's important to remain agile and adaptable to the unique context in which you are working, and to engage the community and local stakeholders in the design of the project.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode-171-piloting-change-exploring-web3-innovations-for-real-world-impact-ft-mercy-corps-ventures-empowa-and-atlantis

Growing up in St. Louis in the 1950s and 60s, Lee Hendrix was taught to fear the Mississippi River. But the sense of adventure it offered ended up being the seed that became a five decade career of piloting boats on the Mississippi. Hendrix discusses his new book, “Peep Light,” where he shares stories about the dangerous work of starting as a deckhand and later ascending to the pilothouse. He also talks about what it was like to pilot passenger vessels, including the grand American Queen, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' largest towboat, the MV Mississippi.

Mark is the quintessential example of somebody doing their life's work and I have no doubt you will come to that conclusion for yourself after listening to his story. On December 13, 1990, 27-year-old Kimberly Kaye “Kim” Wallace travels to her estranged husband 62-year-old Dr. Jack Ray Wallace's home in Cobb County, Georgia to grab Christmas decorations. She is never seen alive again. Hours later, a small airplane lands 300 miles to the south near the Okefenokee Swamp. Those piloting the Cessna 172 aircraft did not turn on the radio-activated runway lights while landing, and an onlooker calls the authorities. When the officers arrive, they find Kim's nude body on board the plane stuffed into a large, black toolbox with a plastic bag tied over her head. Piloting the plane is Dr. Wallace's divorce attorney, 53-year-old Michael Glean, and his former neighbor, 43-year-old Frederick Steven Speas. Both men, along with Dr. Wallace and a fourth co-conspirator, are arrested, charged, and tried for orchestrating Kim's murder. In episode 282, Jac and Alexis reveal how an elaborate murder-for-hire plot unraveled through sheer chance.
