In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews Stefan Di Benedetto from SolBevi. Stefan discussed the phenomenal growth of his limoncello brand, including more than doubling sales and expanding into New Zealand. He shared insights into the challenges of starting solo and the importance of team building. The conversation also touched upon key marketing strategies like "liquid on lips" and the complexities of funding rapid growth in the FMCG industry. Stefan offered valuable lessons learned during his entrepreneurial journey. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? Stefan Di Benedetto believes the hardest thing in growing a small business is having to do everything yourself, especially at the start. Stefan recounted his experience of managing cross-functional tasks such as marketing, finance, and sales simultaneously. He described physically going from venue to venue during the day and then working until midnight on administrative tasks like paying invoices and cash flow forecasting What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Stefan Di Benedetto stated that his favorite business book that has helped him the most is "Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight. He mentioned that the book reminds him of similar situations he has gone through in his business, such as taking risks and experiencing financial difficulties, and it provides him with a lot of motivation. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Stefan Di Benedetto mentioned that he doesn't really use any online tools for his professional development. Instead, he listens to a lot of business-related podcasts. He specifically enjoys podcasts where he can learn from people who have exited businesses and built successful companies. He also listens to podcasts that discuss marketing and marketing strategies, including what's current and how to be strategic. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Stefan Di Benedetto recommends using Xero as a key tool to grow a small business. He emphasizes its value in helping business owners understand their numbers, which he believes is crucial for making informed decisions and sustaining growth. He also highlights the importance of working with a good bookkeeper or accountant who can help interpret those numbers, rather than just recording them. This combination, according to Stefan, provides clarity and supports smarter business decisions. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? On day one, Stefan Di Benedetto would tell himself, “It's going to be hard.” He admits he was likely naive about the challenges of his new industry, especially compared to his previous experience in consultancy and construction, where he felt more confident. The unexpected difficulties taught him that persistence and resilience are essential. His core advice to himself would be: “It's going to be hard, but just don't back down.” Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. What makes Valart's growth strategy unique? His goal? To reach 1 million users in the next five years—but the biggest challenge is convincing collectors to trust a new digital platform with their valuable assets. During our conversation, we explore:

In this episode of The Accountant's Flight Plan Podcast, Brannon sat down with Giles, founder of Accountests and a seasoned accounting professional with 25 years of experience in public accounting and 18 years as a partner in a firm. Giles founded Accountests after years of frustration with the unpredictability of hiring in the accounting profession; hiring seemingly qualified candidates to later realize that they were not the right fit. Accountests is a structured testing approach to help CPA firms make better hiring decisions. His firm provides assessments that measure both technical and soft skills, ensuring that candidates—from college graduates to senior managers—are the right fit before they are brought on board. With the ongoing talent shortage in accounting, firms can no longer afford to rely on outdated hiring methods. The reality is that the pipeline of qualified professionals is not getting any stronger. As firms explore technology, automation, and offshoring to fill the gaps, the hiring process itself remains a critical piece of the puzzle. Giles explains how firms can leverage testing to gain a first-mover advantage—allowing them to receive a resume, assess a candidate, and confidently make a hiring decision in a matter of days rather than weeks. Without a defined process, many firms fall into the trap of hiring reactively rather than proactively. One of the key takeaways from this discussion is the role of testing in evaluating both hard and soft skills. While firms often worry that assessments might scare candidates away, the reality is quite the opposite—strong candidates appreciate a structured and transparent process. Some firms use testing after an offer to determine training needs, but Giles suggests integrating it earlier in the process to make more informed decisions from the start. A well-explained assessment process helps candidates understand their own strengths and how they align with the role.To wrap up, Giles shares some of his favorite business books, including Shoe Dog (https://amazon.com/Shoe-Dog-Memoir-Creator-Nike-ebook/dp/B0176M1A44 )and works by Richard Branson (https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B000APPS34), as sources of motivation for growing a business. For those looking to refine their hiring strategy and develop stronger teams, his firm, Accountests, provides a data-driven approach to making smarter, more confident hiring decisions. Last week, my 10-year-old son Jack, and I discussed an incident in school. After listening to his story, I asked, "Why do you take what he said personally? He paused and rather than answering, he asked, "Why don't you ever seem bothered by what people say or do?" This caught me off guard, but it made me reflect. He had unwittingly touched upon a crucial trait that every leader should cultivate: the ability not to take things personally. Why Leaders Need to Let Things Slide Off Their Backs: Foster Objectivity: A leader's role requires making decisions based on facts, and the best interests of the organization. Emotional reactions can cloud judgment, leading to choices based on ego rather than what's best for the team. Maintain Credibility: Leaders who react emotionally to every critique can appear insecure or unstable. Build a Positive Culture: Leaders who take everything to heart can create a tense environment where team members are afraid to voice concerns and feedback. Leaders who can handle feedback encourage open dialogue and foster trust. Preserve Energy for What Matters: Getting bogged down by every negative comment or action can drain a leader's energy reserves, detracting from the tasks and challenges that need attention. Model Resilience for the Team: Demonstrating resilience can inspire their teams to be more resilient in the face of challenges. Happiness: When you see feedback as a path to growth and are grateful for it, it's easy to not take it personally. Five Tips on How Not to Take Things Personally Practice Self-awareness: Understand your emotional triggers. Work on recognizing when they're activated. Seek Clarity: Before jumping to conclusions, ask questions to understand the context and intentions behind feedback or actions. Detach from the Outcome: Feedback is often about the task, role, or outcome, not a reflection of your worth as a person. Surround Yourself with supportive people who can offer perspective and help you navigate challenges. Practice Regular Reflection: Take time to assess and reflect on your reactions and behaviors. The Counterpoint: The Importance of Listening While it's essential for leaders to not take things personally, it's equally important not to swing the pendulum too far and become apathetic to feedback. Constructive criticism can be instrumental in personal and organizational growth. Remaining open to feedback, discerning the valuable insights from the noise can help leaders see blind spots, stagnation, and missed opportunities for improvement. The balance lies in being emotionally resilient while staying receptive to growth. I tried to explain this to Jack. I am not sure he fully understood what I was saying, or maybe he did because he replied with, "Well you do seem to be much happier than most grownups I know. I like being happy!" And then he asked to go play Fortnite. Lol. Question of the Week It's time again to answer, "What you are reading now? "Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight. I love this story. Shoe Dog is more than just a memoir chronicling the ascent of Nike; it's a vivid portrayal of the passion, grit, and ingenuity behind its founder. Knight's transformation from selling shoes from his car's trunk to spearheading one of the world's most iconic brands serves as a powerful testament to tenacity and vision, reminding us that even the grandest companies sprout from a singular idea fueled by fervor. His relentless spirit in overcoming myriad challenges, from financial hurdles to legal confrontations, offers invaluable insights for leaders navigating their obstacles. His journey wasn't solitary. He accentuates the importance of fostering a committed team, highlighting the integral role his early Nike team, affectionately termed the "Buttfaces," played in the brand's evolution. Perhaps most poignantly, Knight's candid admission of his fears, doubts, and blunders underscores the essence of vulnerability in leadership, making "Shoe Dog" an essential read for all of us.

Nearly all startups fail. Often even founders with a successful exit under their belts have stories of entrepreneurial strikeouts prior to or after their home run. But every once in while there's a founder who seems to have the Midas touch who just keeps winning. No, I'm not talking here about Elon Musk. Rather, I'm talking about Yves Potvin. The classically trained chef pioneered the plant-based meat movement, founding Yves Veggie Cuisine in the 1980s, which was acquired for $35 million by natural foods giant Hain Celestial. One successful exit is rare, but Yves went on to then found Gardein, which brought alt-meat to even higher heights and was eventually acquired by Pinnacle Foods for $175 million. Rather than resting on his laurels and retiring into the Alt-Meat Hall of Fame (which if it existed he'd certainly be in it!), today Yves is betting that entrepreneurial lightning will strike a third time. He's just launched a new brand called Konscious Foods which aims to bring fish-free seafood to the masses, starting with sushi and other Japanese delights. Rather than relying on extruded plant protein isolates—the core of Gardein's products, along with most other alt-meats—Konscious is using whole vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, eggplant, and konjac as its core seafood replacers. But Konscious' frozen sushi, poke bowls, and onigiri don't taste like vegetable rolls. Rather, since Konscious acquired the IP of the defunct alt-seafood company Ocean Hugger Foods, the vegetables are prepared in such a way as to give the feel and taste of products like tuna, crab, and so on. Already they're in Sprouts and Whole Foods (see their frozen sections), and you can even get sushi made at the Whole Foods sushi counter with their fish-free fish product. In this interview, Yves and I talk about his life, success, struggles along the way, and lessons he's learned during his multi-decade career seeking to replace animals in the food system with healthier, more humane, and more sustainable options. Discussed in this episode You can see Konscious' products here. Konscious Foods recently raised $26 million in venture capital. Konscious Foods acquired Ocean Hugger Foods' intellectual property. Yves previously founded both Yves Veggie Cuisine (acquired by Hain Celestial) and Gardein (acquired by Pinnacle, and now owned by ConAgra). Yves worked on Gardein with Tal Ronen, who later founded Crossroads Kitchen. Paul saw Quorn's vegan chicken sold at KFC UK at price parity with conventional chicken. Yves recommends reading Shoe Dog, Steve Jobs, and books by Brian Tracy. More about Yves Potvin Yves Potvin has dedicated his culinary career to creating healthy, tasty, convenient foods that can now be found in institutions across North America. In 2017, Yves bought Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver, and he is excited about training the next generation of chefs while infusing nutrition studies, sustainable practices and new technologies into the curriculum. Trained as a classical French chef, Yves successfully built two health-focused food companies. His first, Yves Veggie Cuisine, grew to become the largest refrigerated meat-alternative producer in North America. It was sold to the Hain Celestial Group in 2001. Yves then founded Garden Protein International in 2003 to create a meatless product line called Gardein, which redefined the plant protein category and became a game changer in this fast-growing segment. Gardein received many awards including Better Homes & Gardens' Best New Product Award 2014, Canadian Grand Prix Award (four years in a row), and the National Restaurant Association's 2014 Food and Beverage Innovation Award. Yves is now the founder and president of Konscious Foods, offering consumers with conscious and convenient plant-based seafood. Yves has been recognized for his career achievements, receiving the BC Food Processors Innovation Award in 2014, Mercy for Animals Innovative Business Award 2014, BC Export Award 2014 for Sustainability, and Canada's Top 40 under 40 Award from Financial Post magazine. Yves served on the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems Advisory Board from 2007-2018, and on the BC Ministry of Agriculture Board of Advisors.

Nike — it's perhaps the most iconic and most prolific brand of the modern era. On any given day, swooshes adorn the feet of more people on earth than any other footwear company — by a long shot.If you read Shoe Dog or watched Air, you may think you know its history. But Shoe Dog ends in 1980, and Air… well let's just say it's an enjoyable piece of fiction. And it turns out (as always) that the real story is filled with far more drama, twists and business lessons than either of those works. We've been wanting to cover Nike for a long time, and thanks to our LPs who voted to choose this episode it's finally here.
