"The Doctor Is Not Always Right" Hein Van Eck is a healthcare actuary by training, a breed of thinker who sits at the intersection of data, ethics, and human behavior. He started in insurance in South Africa, was handed his career-defining job after answering a single ethical question correctly, and has spent the last 20 years on the provider side watching an industry transform in real time. He moved to Dubai in 2014 and hasn't stood still since. As CEO of Mediclinic Middle East, Hein oversees six hospitals, 27 clinics, 4,000 babies born annually, and a workforce of doctors recruited from around the world not by headhunters, but by hospital directors who fly to the UK in winter specifically to sit across a candidate and ask: would I feel comfortable if this person treated my family? That detail tells you everything about how he leads. This conversation goes places most healthcare interviews don't. Hein talks honestly about the agency problem at the heart of modern medicine doctor has the knowledge, patient consumes, insurer pays and what happens when that system breaks down. He explains why Ozempic and Mounjaro might genuinely extend lives, not just shrink waistlines. He reveals an AI model that predicts, with 95% accuracy, which patient won't show up to their appointment. And he shares his vision of what a hospital looks like in ten years: a theatre complex, an ICU, and almost everything else happening at home. If you think Dubai healthcare is second-tier, this conversation will change your mind.

What if some ghostly encounters are not random—but rare, meaningful events that challenge our understanding of reality? In this fascinating episode, Dr. Simeon Hein explores the concept of Black Swan Ghosts, applying ideas from science, probability, and consciousness studies to the world of paranormal experiences. Drawing from his background in social science and research into anomalous phenomena, Dr. Hein examines how seemingly impossible or highly improbable events—often dismissed as coincidence—may actually reveal deeper patterns about how reality operates. He discusses how these “black swan” experiences can include ghost sightings, synchronicities, and other extraordinary encounters that leave a lasting impact on those who experience them. This episode invites listeners to rethink the nature of the paranormal through a more analytical lens. Are ghostly encounters truly random, or are they rare but significant events that point to hidden aspects of consciousness and the universe? And how can we begin to study and understand phenomena that exist on the edge of probability? Join us for a thought-provoking conversation that bridges science and mystery—where rare events, perception, and the unexplained come together to challenge what we think we know about reality itself.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. Find out more at https://leader.blainebartlett.com/power-of-you Summary In this conversation, Blaine and Dr. Michael Hein explore the evolving landscape of leadership in healthcare, emphasizing the importance of purpose, co-creation, and unorthodoxy. They discuss the challenges faced by healthcare leaders, including burnout and workforce issues, and the need for a shift in mindset to navigate uncertainty. The dialogue highlights the significance of distributed leadership and the role of every individual in creating movement within organizations. The conversation concludes with reflections on the nature of leadership and the lessons learned from nature. Takeaways The soul of business is about expressing the founding core. Leadership is about causing movement, not just control. Everyone is a leader, regardless of title. Co-creation shifts the role of leaders from creating to collaborating. Purpose is more enduring and trustworthy than vision. Burnout is a significant challenge in healthcare leadership. Unorthodoxy invites leaders to explore alternative approaches. Mindsets shape our choices and how we perceive challenges. Distributed leadership empowers individuals at all levels. Nature teaches us about distribution, not accumulation. Borneo—split between two countries, home to some of the world's oldest rainforests and a vast array of animal and plant life—is back in the news. The island is set to be home to Nusantara, Indonesia's new planned political capital set to, maybe, open in 2028. And the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak—different from the rest of Peninsular Malaysia—are griping for more rights and authority to control its own wealth. Author Olivier Hein tackles the long history of Borneo in his latest book titled, appropriately, Borneo: The History of an Enigma (Hurst, 2025). He tackles Borneo's indigenous communities; the spread of Hindu, Chinese, Muslim and European influence; the rise of the White Rajah; and how Borneo is treated by today's modern nations. In the latest episode of Fruitnet's conversation series Fruitbox, Chris White speaks to Hein Deprez, founder and executive director of Greenyard, one of the world's biggest fresh produce suppliers.Deprez recently took the company he started more than 40 years ago back into private ownership, completing a full takeover and privatisation with the help of investor Solum Partners. Now, as he prepares to help shape the next chapter in its history, he explains why it made sense for the group to leave the stock exchange and what this means for its customers and growers. He also talks about the need to champion healthy eating – with fresh fruit and vegetables at its core – in order to fix a food system he describes as "broken".And he shares his views on the need for better institutional support for the fruit and vegetable business, especially when it comes to things like the regulation of packaging.Fruitbox is essential listening for everyone in the fresh produce business. Every episode attracts a large global audience. Fruitbox is presented by Fruitnet's Chris White. Why do so many of us LIMIT what we're capable of ? How many of these limitations are self-imposed vs. the result of economic pressure to make a living? Do we get more hesitant to explore as we get older? We often describe ourselves as one thing; I'm a woodworker, I'm a painter, I'm metal worker, etc. However back in the renaissance, it was COOL to know poetry, have a deep understanding of math and science, to paint, draw, sculp, act, to dive into philosophy, what we now refer to today a “Renaissance Man or Woman".In today's episode, we have on a true renaissance man Jeff Hein, who you may know as an incredibly skilled and famous portrait artist painter, however it goes much deeper than that. Jeff also pursues textiles and costume design, woodworking, metal working, engraving, leather working, and leads us through a fascinating discussion on this topic of why we pigeonhole ourselves vs. branching out and exploring.Jeff has his own amazing podcast here (The Undraped Artist): https://www.youtube.com/@theundrapedartistJeff's Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/jeff_hein_artTo watch the YOUTUBE VIDEO of this episode and the irreverent & somewhat unpredictable AFTERSHOW, subscribe to our Patreon: (http://patreon.com/user?u=91688467)
