Marnie is an unbelievable force for good who now speaks out for other young runaways and missing people Marnie Grundman has been featured on over 100 major television and radio shows in Canada, the United States and Europe including TEDx, Breakfast Television, Global News, CP24 News, The Marilyn Denis Show, Young Justice, Here and Now CBC, News Talk 1010, CJAD, and the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse. A child who belonged to no one, missing at the age of 13, she spent years living on the streets where she experienced the worst of humanity first-hand. In her darkest hours, while living in an apartment complex sauna, she was sure that everyone who knew her had forgotten that she even existed. It was in those desperate hours that she decided she was paying up front for a better life that lay ahead. What began as a story of healing led to one of triumph, of the power of the human spirit, of one woman's surthrival against all odds. Marnie has since become an advocate for the missing, working to change the perception of runaway children so they might finally get the help they desperately need. While her number one mission is to break the stereotypes related to runaways and people experiencing homelessness she also speaks on a variety of topics designed to motivate people to reach beyond the stars. Some key points from our interview:* How she came to realise that due to her Mother's mental health that her behaviour towards her wasn't personal* How she managed to break the cycle in negative parenting when she became a mum* How she recognised that healthier choices can become habits through practice * How she learnt to stop listening to her inner 14 year old who's first reaction was to bolt when times got tough* How she realises that everyday she makes the choice to be happy "You can survive anything and everything" - Marnie Grundman You can more info about Marnie here: https://www.lovemarnie.org/ * * * *"Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. Tune in to discover what helped them to stay unbroken and together we will discover that none of us are broken beyond repair. You can find out more about Madeleine, her story and her memoir, Unbroken, from her website: https://madeleineblack.co.uk/Watch the Podcast via YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/c/MadeleineBlackUnbrokenFollow on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/unbrokenthepodcastwithmb
In this mini episode Tim draws on lessons learned from Michael Hyatt (an upcoming guest on Screw the Naysayers) and past guests Marcus Aurelius Anderson and Marnie Grundman, to talk about two realities in business. To consistently make money you need to serve others consistently. Talking about it, which seems to be the fad these days with all the self proclaimed "influencers" will lead you to oblivion. enjoy...
She is a survivor of the streets from an early age and has made it her mission to create awareness around youth homelessness and runaways. Listen to Marnie Grundman’s story of surviving to thriving on today’s episode Out of the Blue.
Show date 3/30/2017
My guest on this episode of the podcast, Marnie Grundman, has made it her life's mission to advocate for runaway for children and youth, and raise awareness to the reality of what really goes into the decision to run and what life is truly like living on the streets.Marnie Grundman is the renowned author of MISSING: A True Story of a Childhood Lost, Which can be found on her website, MarnieGrundman.com. A child who belonged to no one, missing at the tender age of 13, she experienced first-hand the worst of humanity. However, she didn't just make it through; she rose above the darkness, becoming a beacon of light, of empowerment, for others to do the same. She is living proof that no matter what life hands you, you have within you the spirit to rise, to rewrite the outcome of your story, to create a life filled with love and happiness. What began as a story of healing led to one of triumph, of the power of the human spirit, of one woman's surthrival against all odds. Marnie has since become an advocate for the missing, working to change the perception of runaway children so they might finally get the help they need. Her compelling articles, engaging talks and interviews, and page-turning memoirs have become a shining light to the lost, the struggling. Marnie teaches people how not to live their damage, how to heal and overcome, how to rise up and reclaim a life of happiness.During our chat, you'll hear Marnie and I talk about:Updates on her work and how her life has changed especially in the just the last few years. She discusses the stigma that surrounds childhood runaways, and her efforts to erase that by sharing the truth as seen through her own eyes and through these whom she advocates for every day.The reasons by young children and youth decide to run away, and how it's much more complicated than simply rebelling against household rules deciding to go on some kind of adventure. You'll learn how children who decide to run away are often not able to effectively articulate the reasons why, because they are afraid. They've been silenced and running is a way for them to try to speak out.How the very act of running and living on the streets is not some glamorous adventure, or a fun time of memories to look back on later in life. The 40th anniversary is coming up of her last runaway experience. The memories and wounds are still as fresh as ever, and the struggles are still difficult. This milestone is something that she continues to process, but the difference now is that even with those struggles, she has tools and knowledge to help her cope.Seeing how far she's come is inspiring and validating, but also heartbreaking because there is still so much work to be done to help the children and youth today.Realizing that while she has met so many people who are supporting her work and helping to spread her message and raise awareness, there are also many who do not support her; people who she was close too before she began speaking her truth. Her work with Covenanent House and her goal of doing "sleep outs" for all 31 Covenant Houses in North America, this calendar year, to raise funds and awareness for runaway and homeless children and youth.Consider taking a moment and give a smile, some change, or a moment of kindness to someone who is struggling. You never know the difference it can make to a child, youth, or adult who feels like nobody is listening and nobody cares.I hope you'll consider joining Marnie in 2019, and participating in a Sleep Out or Donating. When Marnie Grundman was 5 years old her mother deliberately dropped her out of a 2nd story window. As a teenager she spent years living on the streets where she experienced the worst of humanity first-hand. In her darkest hours while living in an apartment complex sauna, she was sure that everyone who knew her had forgotten that she even existed. It was in those desperate hours that she decided she was paying up front for a better life that lay ahead. Marnie’s determination to find that better life was fueled by a promise she made to her guardian angel. She swore that she would never sell her body for money and would never take drugs. She kept her promise. Today Marnie is a mother of 3 and a tireless advocate for the missing, working to change the perception of runaway children so they might finally get the help they desperately need. Her TedX talk, titled “Nothing Bad Happens Behind Pretty Doors” dispels the myth that all runaways come from the wrong side of the tracks. The facts tell us otherwise. There are so many lessons for us in this episode. Marnie is proof that our current circumstances do not have to define our future. We learn how a simple act of guidance by her guardian angel saved her life. It might surprise you to know her guardian angel was a prostitute. And perhaps most importantly Marnie challenges all of us to be kinder, to carry coins in our pocket to give to the homeless, to make eye contact. To do otherwise is to reinforce their belief that they are worthless. Contact Marnie: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marniegrundman/ Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Marnie Grundman started running away at the age of 5. At the tender age of 13, she ran away “for good.” Marnie lived on the streets, sometimes alone, sometimes with another runaway. At age 17, Marnie became pregnant with her first child, a daughter. Because of her enormous love for her daughter, Marnie started taking steps that brought her to finally love herself. Q & A What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? Feeling that I wasn’t worthy. Not just feeling it, knowing that I wasn’t worthy. I was taught that at a very young age. Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? That is one of the toughest questions. I think I’m going to say my ex-husband. I really grew up with him. What is the best advice you have ever received? “Never be afraid to walk away from anything.” What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Resetting and giving myself a little time to do nothing at all. Do you have a favorite quote? “I’m the strongest person I know.” Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice. I don’t have one. I don’t use anything on the outside like that. I would say that the best way to reset for me is yoga. What book are you reading right now? I’m not reading a book right now. I’ve been focusing on articles about foster care, group homes, and boarding school. What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Two things: destigmatizing the way people view runaways and homeless youth; and helping people get past and through the things that have hurt them in their lives, to get them on the other side and loving themselves. An amazing woman who has dedicated her life to help raise awareness and educate everyone on behalf of abused and runaway children. As a child runaway herself, Marnie shares some of her story with me here on the show. It's not just about being a rebellious child, in fact it goes much deeper than that, to a life that often includes all types of abuse. I hope you will be encouraged by her story of survival and how she fought through and overcame incredible trials to be where she is today. Be sure and check her out on MarnieGrundman.com !
