Coming up on this episode of Flirtations, we're talking limerence, longing, and connection with our guest, Amanda McCracken, a journalist, speaker, and host of the insightful The Longing Lab podcast and author of the forthcoming book, When Longing Becomes Your Lover. Inside the episode, we breakdown limerence and the limerence cycle, and how this intense and often obsessive infatuation we may develop for someone ultimately keeps us from developing the connections and relationships we desire.  We'll also explore the neuroscience behind limerence and how our brains are wired to desire what we don't have, and why this longing can become a comforting distraction.  But that's not all, you all came through with questions and we've got answers, like how to break the limerence cycle? What if I just can't get over someone? I have a crush, how can I not go into limerence? What are some strategies for obsessive thoughts? What role does social media and the dating apps play in all of this? As we begin to wrap up the conversation, Amanda shares her decision to wait until 41 to have sex, which garnered national attention and sparked conversations about intimacy, self-worth, and the societal narratives that shape our romantic lives. Alright flirties, let's prepare to examine our desires and the stories we tell ourselves about love.  Time to meet Amanda! Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review Flirtations on your favorite podcast platform, and share this episode to spread BFE - big flirt energy- all over the world! Enjoying the show and want to support my work? Buy the Flirt Coach a coffee! About our guest:  Amanda McCracken is an award-winning journalist whose writing has been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, NPR, Elle, National Geographic, Vogue, Runner's World, Outside and elsewhere. She is now a TEDxCU speaker coach and a writing consultant at the University of Colorado. McCracken has been interviewed about her essays on intimacy by Katie Couric, the BBC World News, USA Today, and various podcasts. After over a decade of research and interviews with 100+ people, her hybrid memoir on limerence When Longing Becomes Your Lover will be published Februrary 2026, but the greatest result of her investigative journey was meeting her husband and having their daughter.  McCracken is also an endurance athlete and triathlon coach of 25 years. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about creativity. What's your definition of creativity? And do you see yourself as creative? I struggled with seeing myself this way for many years because I'm not artistic. Expanding my definition of creativity helped me to see that I'm far more creative than I thought. You probably are too! This week, I'm talking with Dr. Amy Climer, a creativity and innovation consultant, about driving greater creativity and innovation among teams. Here she shares the three key elements needed for teams to be creative together: team purpose, strong team dynamics and a team creative process. We also talk about the ways in which our current structures set us up for failure by emphasizing the idea that there's one right way to do things and by focusing on short-term, transactional results rather than long-term innovative solutions. And, lastly, we talk about the ways in which impostor syndrome and fear keep us from being creative and how creative teams can support one another.About My GuestDr. Amy Climer is a thought leader in innovation, team development, and experiential learning. Her essays and stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Writer's Digest, National Public Radio, Agni, Narrative Magazine, AWP Notebook, Newsday, The Common, the Best American Poetry blog, and elsewhere. Her TEDx talk on creativity is titled, “The Love Affair Between Creativity & Constraint.” Tess is a graduate of Boston College and Bennington College Writing Seminars and teaches creative writing and meditation. She curates Muse-feed.com, a toolbox for aspiring writers. A dual citizen of the United States and Ireland, she lives in Cape Cod and Northern New Jersey with her family and number one life coach, her dog. In my book review, I stated Dawnland is a contemporary family life fiction filled to the brim with family secrets and misunderstandings. April has been friends with brothers Allen and Oliver since childhood. Al was bold, athletic, and always pushing boundaries. Oliver was quiet, studious, and always towing the line. April came from a bad home and though she loved Oliver, never felt she deserved him - even after they share their love for one another while in Ireland. In the end, April chooses Al, making the next fifteen years difficult, at best. The main portion of the story takes place during a one-week summer vacation on the Cape - something the family has done for years. Only this time, the pretense unravels and secrets come roaring out. The question is, who will survive unscathed when the dust settles? I loved this story and can't get April, Al, Meredith, Oliver, Hal, Beryl, and the children out of my mind. It's a great read. Mindy explains what a thought leader is and how to become one. She also shares how to use the written word and language to get back in touch with who you are so that you can make progress and help more people.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Put your best ideas out there then let people decide for themselves whether you are a thought leader or not. Don´t just publish anything. It has to be good, and you have to write it yourself. Consuming too much of other people´s content clouds your mind and dilutes your ideas. Mindfulness, journalling, and affirmations are powerful, but you have to do them in the right way. Mindy shares how. Spend time reflecting with intention. Every day, pause, ask yourself what went well, and what went wrong, and decide what to work on tomorrow. Writing is powerful. It helps you as well as others. Find good female mentors. You will need several mentors throughout your life. Become a giver.   BEST MOMENTS “Dig deep for your expertise and showcase that, and then you'll be known as an expert with proper substance. “ “Part of my work is about helping people get back to themselves.“ “Reflect with intention.“ “Journal these things out but make true statements.”   EPISODE RESOURCES https://giving1percent.com/ https://mindygk.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5W2AGg2nMo ABOUT MINDY Mindy Gibbins-Klein is an international speaker, coach, and author of 14 books, with her clients publishing over 1,000 titles. We all have things that scare us. And it's not because we're doing life wrong; fear, in and of itself, is a normal emotion. So then what do we do with it? That's really what this series, For the Love of Facing Your Fears, is all about. Today's guest will be walking us through some strategies on facing our fears in a healthy way by showing us what habits mentally strong people employ in their lives. Amy Morin is a renowned psychotherapist, a bestselling author and she's devoted her whole career to the exploration of what it means to be mentally strong. Her TEDx talk, “The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong” has been lauded as one of the most impactful TEDx videos to date. Amy's personal journey of loss juxtaposes with Jen's recent experience of starting over again after 26 years of marriage–and they both discuss how fear played into their lives during these periods of grief and loss. Amy gives actionable, easy to employ behaviors that can set us on the course toward conquering our fears–no matter how debilitating.  * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “It's so easy to get caught up in that idea of ‘I don't want my life to be different because I don't want to make it any worse and if it's going to be different, it's going to be hard to adapt to.'” - Amy Morin “Our fear meters in life are often super faulty. We think if something feels scary, we shouldn't do it and then we don't. I lived a lot of my life like that. Well, that's the perfect recipe for depression, because you live a really safe life and you don't go out there and figure out how exciting things can be and how much you're capable of doing.” - Amy Morin “When our fear runs really high, our intelligence runs really low. You want to balance that and take notice of how scared you feel right now? Fear will cause you to overestimate the likelihood that everything's going to go wrong. It will cause you to underestimate your own capabilities so you've got to raise your logic and balance out that fear a little bit.” - Amy Morin “Taking back your power is all about just stepping back and realizing these are my choices. This is my day, my life. How do I want to spend it? Do I need to set a boundary? Do I need to at least change my language so that I'm not saying other people are forcing me to do something, as opposed to just recognizing I don't want to do this, but I'm going to do it anyway?” - Amy Morin “Mentally strong people don't feel the world owes them anything.” - Amy Morin Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong - Amy Morin's TEDx Talk 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do by Amy Morin (Article) 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do (Book) Guest's Links: Amy's Website Amy's Facebook Amy's Twitter Amy's Instagram Connect with Jen!
