Dr. Christine Cocchiola is back with a brand-new children's book called Every Moment of Every Day. It's a book for kids who are going back and forth between homes when one of those homes isn't safe. It gives children language for what they're feeling, and it gives protective parents a roadmap for how to support them when they come home. This book does something I haven't seen in any other children's book about divorce: it integrates somatic healing methods to help kids move out of survival mode and back into connection. It also gives children something abusers never do: choice and agency. We also talk about how to co-regulate when your child comes home dysregulated, which is so hard to do, but so incredibly important. And I ask Dr. C for her thoughts on the way narcissists and coercive controllers are often conflated. She explains why they are not the same. This is the kind of conversation that reminds me why we can't stop being fierce advocates for the people we work with every day. As Dr. C says, when kids finally connect the dots and the attachment gets rebuilt, it's the most beautiful thing to watch. And it starts with you. Then a VP she respected -- someone outside her chain of command -- pulled her aside and delivered six words that changed her career: "Nobody likes working with you." In this episode of Be Truly Heard, Anne Leatherland is joined by speaker coach and sobriety mentor Gill McKay to explore what it really means to feel “comfortable in your own skin” and to speak from a place of congruence rather than coping. Gill shares how decades of high-functioning drinking, family pressure and a constantly activated nervous system left her out of alignment with who she really was, and how choosing alcohol freedom brought back self-respect, aliveness and a voice she could stand behind. She talks about the surprising stigma of sobriety, the hidden shame and bias around alcohol, and why giving language to taboo experiences can make others feel less alone. Key TakeawaysWhat looked like “winding down” with a bottle of wine was actually keeping Gill's nervous system flooded with stress chemistry. She had normalised living in fight/flight/freeze/fawn, all while juggling work, children and caring responsibilities. Removing alcohol allowed her nervous system to settle so she could move from merely functioning to genuinely living.Gill was shocked to find she felt more shame as a sober woman than as a drinker, thanks to comments like “Oh, go on, just have one” and “You weren't that bad.” She also uncovered her own hidden biases in thoughts like “I only drank wine, not vodka,” which quietly positioned other drinkers as “worse”. Examining these stories is part of healing shame.Subjects like shame, secrecy, lying and addiction are often experienced in silence. By naming her own experience in her TEDx talk and in her work, Gill helps others realise it isn't “just me”. From Amy:Ten years ago this month, I started my 21st year of teaching with painful confirmations that my career was on its last legs: betrayal by people in power and a frozen right shoulder (my dominant side) that made it hard to write on the board.I didn't know how or when I would make the leap to the life of a working creative. But I knew I had run out of options in my longtime school district.It turned out to be two things. First: I had to leave. When the semester ended in January, I did. My body insisted I do so. Certain people made sure it happened… some who didn't have my back, some who absolutely did. Thanks to them, even (especially) in that fearful passage, I experienced HOPE.Second: After my escape, I kept hope alive by cobbling together activities in person and online, including a book revision cohort that met around a dining room table in South Minneapolis, led by an occasional mentor of mine. I got admitted by promising to finish my manuscript in time for my critique, several months in. That's where I met Keri Mangis, also processing the end of a dream.When my book's turn came to be read, my draft was done, but I backed out for reasons that boil down to a still-raw and reactive nervous system. Of that group, I only trusted Keri to read my draft.And when we reached the milestone of being published—our respective book launch parties—you better believe we were there for each other.I pulled oracle cards, doing readings for guests at Keri's February 2020 launch, just before the world shut down. She has 13 collections of poetry, and her work has appeared in O Magazine, A Prairie Home Companion, PBS News Hour, American Life in Poetry, on fences, in back alleys, on Carnegie Hall Stage and on hundreds of river rocks she leaves around town. Her poems have been used for choral works by composers Paul Fowler and Jeffrey Nytch and performed around America. Her most recent collection, Hush, won the Halcyon prize. Naked for Tea was a finalist for the Able Muse Book Award. Other books include Even Now, The Less I Hold and If You Listen, a finalist for the Colorado Book Award. In 2023 she released All the Honey; Beneath All Appearances an Unwavering Peace (a book for grieving parents with artist Rashani Réa); a book of writing prompts, Exploring Poetry of Presence II; and Dark Praise, a spoken word album with Steve Law. She's won the Fischer Prize, Rattle's Ekphrastic Challenge (thrice), the Dwell Press Solstice Prize, the Writer's Studio Literary Contest (twice) and The Blackberry Peach Prize. She's widely anthologized including Poetry of Presence, How to Love the World, The Path to Kindness, Send My Roots Rain, Come Together: Imagine Peace, Dawn Songs, and To Love One Another. She's been an organic fruit grower, a newspaper and magazine editor, and a parent educator for Parents as Teachers. She earned her MA in English Language & Linguistics at UW–Madison. I struggled with seeing myself this way for many years because I'm not artistic. Expanding my definition of creativity helped me to see that I'm far more creative than I thought. You probably are too! This week, I'm talking with Dr. Amy Climer, a creativity and innovation consultant, about driving greater creativity and innovation among teams. Here she shares the three key elements needed for teams to be creative together: team purpose, strong team dynamics and a team creative process. We also talk about the ways in which our current structures set us up for failure by emphasizing the idea that there's one right way to do things and by focusing on short-term, transactional results rather than long-term innovative solutions.
