Did you know that families with young children are one of the most likely groups to experience homelessness? Being a new parent is hard enough – it's nearly impossible when you don't have stable housing. This week Gloria's talking to Kate Barrand, who runs Horizons for Homeless Children, an organization in Boston providing quality childcare and early education to unhoused families. They're doing incredible work, and Kate has some powerful insights into what it takes  to help families find stability. Then Gloria talks to Caitlin Liversidge, a new mother in San Francisco who found herself unhoused and pregnant last summer, about what it took for her to make it through pregnancy and find stability. Etsy vs. Goimagine: A David vs. Goliath Showdown   Ranked Categories:   Mission/Business:    • Goimagine: Donates profits to charities helping children, such as Horizons for Homeless Children and Relief Nursery, and exclusively supports handmade items. Rating: 5  • Etsy: Profits are directed to shareholders, impacting seller and buyer experiences. No longer exclusively handmade. Rating: 1   Seller User Experience:    • Goimagine:  • Lacks integrated shipping labels.  • No promotional coupons for conversions.  • Requires Stripe for payments, adding extra steps.  • Limited analytics and no individual listing stats.  • No dedicated seller app, but has a community app.  • Similar listing and shop setup to Etsy, making it easy to transition.  • Keeps buyers within the seller's shop. Rating: 3  • Etsy:  • Comprehensive marketing suite and tools.  • Integrated payment processor and robust analytics.  • Alerts for conversions and detailed customer insights.  • Extensive experience and resources. Rating: 4.5   Support:    • Goimagine:  • Known for stellar seller support with CEO involvement.  • Easy to get help and quick resolutions.  • No support phone number, only a help center and forum. Rating: 4  • Etsy:  • Declining support quality since going public.  • Difficult to resolve issues quickly.  • Shops can be suspended with limited recourse.  • Has support chat and a help center. Rating: 3   Buyer Experience:    • Both offer gift recipient options and customer apps.  • Similar, user-friendly checkout processes.  • Etsy:  • Cleaner, more professional checkout.  • Multiple payment options like PayPal and Google Pay. Rating: 5  • Goimagine: Lacks additional payment options. Rating: 4   Traffic/Buyers:    • Goimagine:  • 600,000 visits in three months.  • 6,000 sellers.  • Estimated 46,500 buyers. Rating: 1  • Etsy:  • 1.3 billion visits in the same period.  • 93 million buyers per year.  • 8.3 million sellers. Rating: 5   Summary: Goimagine is a promising platform with a strong mission, but it currently lacks some of the tools and traffic that Etsy offers. While Etsy has more resources and a larger user base, Goimagine's focus on charitable donations and handmade items provides a unique appeal. Both platforms have their strengths and weaknesses, making the choice dependent on individual seller needs and values.

On today's In the News podcast we look at a new report that reveals the shocking health problems affecting children who spend years spent living in emergency accommodation. In May there were 4,316 homeless children in the State, living in a range of emergency accommodation types, from B&Bs to family hubs, often in overcrowded conditions – an entire family sharing one small room, for example – or without adequate cooking facilities. At the Lynn Clinic in Temple Street children's hospital in Dublin, Dr Aoibheann Walsh is seeing malnutrition effects more common in developing countries, such as rickets, anaemia, faltering growth and extreme tooth-decay, and skin “infestations” like scabies.Kitty Holland, Irish Times social affairs correspondent, has visited the clinic and talked to some parents about the reality of child homelessness and the devastating impact on a growing group of children.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Police commander. Since Larson ran the Homeless Children's Playtime Project, she assumed the call was related to her job. Around the time of the phone call, a 14-year-old girl has run away from the homeless shelter. This led to questions surrounding the degree of care the shelter has for its runaways. Larson was wrong, though. The commander asked if she knew that an 8-year-old was missing from her shelter. The Homeless Children's Playtime Project is an organization that works to create play areas for homeless children. Relisha Rudd — the aforementioned 8-year-old — was one of those children. Upon being told that she was missing, Larson was asked to send the police all of the information she had on Relisha. Emails confirm that Larson had provided the police with everything they'd asked for.“She holds such a special place in our hearts,” Larson said. “I think we owe it to her to not give up and to keep her picture and her story out there.”Support the show
