Michelle Madden is a fellow Baby Scoop era adoptee. She is also a mom, a Reading Specialist who has been working as a Special Education teacher for many years, and a marvelous person. Join us as we talk about the crucial nature of medical histories, and the difficulties of navigating not just one, but two countries bureaucracies in her search for answers. Baby Scoop Era: The Baby Scoop Era was a period of time from roughly 1945 to the 1970s. The Baby Scoop Era was characterized by the shaming of unwed mothers into relinquishing their children for adoption. Adoptions were often shrouded in secrecy, and the falsification of birth records was common. Grey Market Adoption: this is an adoption that takes place through a lawyer rather than through an agency. They are sometimes facilitated by doctors. They are legal, but ethically questionable. Clinical Geneticist: a clinical geneticist is a doctor who works with patients dealing with conditions related to a hereditary issue Adoptee-centric therapist: an adoptee centric therapist is a therapist educated in the issues that confront adopted people. Often, the therapists are adoptees themselves, and uniquely situated to understand the challenges adoptees face. Illinois adoptee access to records law: In 2011, Illinois amended their laws, allowing adoptees born before 1946full access to their original birth certificates. Adoptees born after that date who are over 21years of age may receive their original birth certificate if their birth parent did not file a veto before November of 2011. *note: I am new at this podcast business. You will hear me say Oops at the beginning of this broadcast. Do not be alarmed. That was me realizing I had accidentally hit record before I was ready to record. I thought, I will just edit that out later. If only my computer was so agreeable. I am learning as I go along.

In the city Cologne, the number 11 is considered a lucky number, there is even is a carnival celebration every year that begins on Nov 11 at 11:11 a.m. Since a book that highlighted 11 spots isn’t enough to be considered a guide book, they added another one, making it a total of 111 places. This year the guide book unraveled some known and possibly hidden gems in Milwaukee in their new book, “111 Places in Milwaukee That You Must Not Miss” written by Michelle Madden.

Undivided is a podcast series which focuses on breaking down societal barriers and societal messaging which serves to alienate people. The goal of the program is to unite people in harmony, respect, and peace. The next episode will look at the power of words and the power of listening to help make people feel validated and valued.  The words we use are powerful and they can build each other up or break each other down. The way in which words are used are crucial to breaking down societal divisions and discord. My special guest will be Michelle Madden. Michelle Madden, M. Ed is a consultant and coach who specializes in communication skills and social/emotional development. She has over 20 years experience working with children and families, most recently as a school administrator at a school for children who did not thrive in traditional learning settings. She holds degrees in family and child development, school leadership and instruction,  as well as certifications as a reading specialist and Ipec life coach. Ms. Madden is a parent of a child with learning disabilities as well as an educator providing her with a unique perspective of education. She has been a homeschooling parent, and taught at both public and private schools working with all socio-economic groups and diverse backgrounds.  The most important key to success in life, however, is our relationship with ourselves and others.  Michelle is a wife of 28 years and mother two two young men and one dachsund. She loves to travel, read, meet people, and promote better understanding and communication. She resides in Delaware with her family, where she continues to share her knowledge of the power of our words in the world. Frank J. Peter "Blackie" Black and his legendary band The Hard-Ons have been making Australian punk rock proud for 40 years. In this special episode we explore his colourful history, from ingesting incredible 70's rock to falling in love with punk, forming the band as kids, their wild and wonderful experiences around the world and country through to releasing a song a day (for a year) four decades later. Humble, funny and super dedicated to his craft and a lifelong quest to learn more, Blackie is also Void co-host Michele Madden's (Tourettes, Meldrum) musical big brother and we learn a lot about their relationship and their mutual musical respect. Michele has appeared onstage and on record with the Hard-Ons many times over the years (their memorable first studio session is shared in detail here) and her stagecraft still leaves Blackie in awe to the same degree his musicianship and passionate commitment to hard work and creative evolution informs little sister Michele's own relationship with the artform. This episode provides a real insight into the experience of the Australian musician.

An in-depth discussion with a first mother and daughter (Maret Headley and Erica Curry VanEe) that is one of the most touching and intimate views I’ve ever had of a reunion. They were extraordinarily candid with me about what’s been lost because of adoption. Three adoptees (Ruth Rawlin Tacoma, Lisa Floyd, and Michelle Madden) tell me, “what do you really think about adoption?”, “what would you say to your family of origin if you had the chance?”, and “what do non-adopted people need to know about adoptees?”.  And, as per usual, I cry while describing a moment at the conference I will never forget.    Full Show Notes Here   Connect With Us Haley Radke: Twitter | Instagram | Facebook Adoptees On: Twitter | Instagram | Facebook Monthly Newsletter Send a Note or Record a Voicemail   Subscribe Apple Podcasts | Google Play | iHeart Radio | Spotify | Stitcher | YouTube   Support Adoptees On One Time Donation | Monthly | Secret Facebook Group
