Lori Hopper is a Mental Fitness Coach (Reframe: Mental Fitness Coaching) and fellow Assumption High School alumni based in the Quad Cities. This is an episode jam packed with so much information I cannot fit in one brief description. The key thing we discussed was our relationship with ourselves, and how that effects the way we see and approach life. A couple of main topics of conversation were boundaries, becoming a Certified Professional Coach (CPC), the fight or flight response, meditation, PTSD, projection, emathy, and so much more. Oh my goodness I am so excited that I get to share my friend with you: Gemma Wilkinson, Transition and Transformation Coach at a Different Choice. Gemma married her corporate know-how and experiences with her rage, for female oppression, to fuel women and their goals with judgment-free support, curiosity, and well-timed swear words. Realizing that half of her life was spent prioritizing corporate agendas over herself, Gemma resigned both her life and her job to begin the work of reconnecting with herself. Gemma experienced the gift and heartache of supporting her biological father at the end of his life, multiple personal experiences with cancer, the death of her identity, and the child-like wonder of finding herself again. I'm so grateful to be a witness along this journey. Gemma is a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) with iPEC and an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the ICF. Gemma gives a shit about how women talk to themselves. You're gonna hear about that in this episode. She gets fired up by the harmful "truths" that women are taught, and she's driven to create safe and dedicated spaces for women to discover, to give voice to, and to embody whatever the hell they choose. When she's not helping women release their burdens and reframe their thoughts, you'll find Gemma embracing her child-free life choice on a paddle board, learning about adult-diagnosed ADHD, cooking plants, and dreaming about her goals. Put your seat belt on - you're going to love this conversation! Highlights of our conversation: The surprising way we met. How Gemma lost, and then rediscovered, her voice. She makes her home in Arizona and loves to travel, collect art, cycle, and practice yoga in her spare time. In this episode, we explore how Ilene came to work in eating disorders and her personal journey into trauma focused work. Ilene explains about treating eating disorders from the ‘bottom up', working on the deeper issues rather than symptoms only, this being a part in recovery that is often overlooked. She talks about how eating disorders give short-term relief from emotional pain, but these maladaptive coping strategies lead to a vicious cycle of shame and disappointment, which is challenging to escape from. She introduces skills and practices to begin to heal trauma and to restore the nervous system again, for sustainable eating disorder recovery. I hope that you enjoy the conversation. Her mother developed two brain tumors, which people believed were connected to her losses. In the process of her mother getting better, MaryRuth became excited to learn about health and wellness to help her mother thrive. MaryRuth believes that each person has an entrepreneurial spirit. MaryRuth used to be an athlete. The competitive spirit of doing difficult things merged into her business. How MaryRuth Kept Her Positive Mindset MaryRuth enjoyed being with her team and is passionate about being a team builder. Take care of yourself first, then your employees. Eventually, extend that to your customers. Build a strong company culture. A healthy and mission-driven company has authentic customer interactions. MaryRuth decided to get herself out of debt first before hiring an employee. What Prompted Her to Write Her Book MaryRuth has been teaching the contents of the book for quite a while. She finally started writing it during COVID. MaryRuth is passionate about the book because she believes that health and wellness should be free and accessible to everyone. She noticed that very successful people have the money but are always too busy working to take care of themselves. On the other hand, there are people with no money that need to be mindful of their health and The book is composed of 12 free and accessible actions that anyone can do, regardless if they have money or not. Dealing with the Pandemic It made MaryRuth feel even more empathy for every single person. The pandemic created so much loss, like the loss of going out or meeting your friends. Collectively, everyone is more interested in health and wellness now. MaryRuth went through pregnancy and gave birth to twins during COVID. The Key to Building a Good Team There are two qualities that MaryRuth values in a team: hard work and empathy. MaryRuth also wants her team to be humble. Beyond this, she makes sure to get direct feedback from her employees. MaryRuth conducted an anonymous culture survey among her employees. The results serve as a metric for MaryRuth to measure what's working and what needs to be improved on. On Self-Esteem Self-esteem comes from having a relationship with yourself. Asking people about their self-esteem allows you to reflect on your self-esteem. On Travelling and the Pandemic The first couple of months of the pandemic was great because people were able to rest. After a few months, we began to miss what was. Everything that was going on in the world added to the anxiety and stress of life. How MaryRuth Feels Radically Loved MaryRuth believes that the universe is pushing her forward and everything that is happening is for her ultimate good. She and her family believe that the universe only wants the best for them. 5 Powerful Quotes [8:15] “Once you give yourself a lot of energy through self-care, through wellness, then you can give that energy to your employees.” [13:10] “Sometimes the pain point in people's lives has so much to do with their gifts, and their purpose, and the things that will make them happy in the end.” [34:14] “If you want to be on the team, you got to be hard working but you got to have human dignity and empathy.” [38:01] “Our bodies are a direct feedback to what we're putting in and how we're treating it, and the things that we're doing.” [46:55] “Part of our ability to be present and to be mindful is to just appreciate what is.” About MaryRuth MaryRuth Ghiyam is the founder of MaryRuth Organics. Anna is a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) and Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner (E.L.I. - MP) who trained with the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. Her mission is to help people embrace their Entrepreneurial Soul - to trust their intuition and take action to pursue their dreams, even when it is intimidating, confusing, or difficult. Throughout her 20 year career in media sales and magazine publishing, Anna has worked with national, international and global teams and brands across Africa, America, Europe, and the Middle East. Seven years ago, she followed her own dream and moved from London to New York City. As an expat who had always been very close to family and friends, being so far away from a support network was challenging even though it was exactly what she wanted. She was far from her comfort zone, in every possible way—a new country, new city, new job, new life! Making such a drastic life change all at once made her realize that change is transformative, but also scary, and it's easy to become stuck or stalled. She now holds workshops and offers team and 1-1 coaching sessions to help New Yorkers and international clients and businesses who are undergoing major life transitions themselves. With a passion for life-long learning Anna is currently completing her certification in Happiness Studies and Advanced COR.E Dynamic training in Transitions.
