rWotD Episode 2714: 1848 United States presidential election in Wisconsin Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Tuesday, 8 October 2024 is 1848 United States presidential election in Wisconsin. The 1848 United States presidential election in Wisconsin was held on November 7, 1848, as part of the 1848 United States presidential election. It was the first presidential election held in Wisconsin since its admission to the Union on May 29, earlier the same year. Democratic candidate Lewis Cass won the state with 38% of the vote, carrying the state's 4 electoral votes. With 26.41% of the popular vote, Wisconsin would prove to be Van Buren's third strongest state after Vermont and Massachusetts. The 1848 election began a trend in Wisconsin where the state would vote the same as neighboring Iowa, as the two states have voted in lockstep with each other on all but 6 occasions - 1892, 1924, 1940, 1976, 2004, and 2020. This was the last time until 1988 that Wisconsin would back a losing Democrat in a presidential election.Participating in its first presidential election, Portage County would ultimately be carried by the statewide winner in every election until 1916. Meanwhile, Winnebago County would not vote for the statewide loser again until 1924.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:15 UTC on Tuesday, 8 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1848 United States presidential election in Wisconsin on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.
JD Vance has had quite a month. He's managed to snag the VP spot, while busy pushing some of the oldest racist tropes in existence, aka the..."they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats" in Springfield, Ohio. Since Vance admitted he lied about this claim, violence against Haitian immigrants and other people of color in Springfield has run rampant. Vance refuses to take any responsibility for his racist slur that has incited the threat of lynch mobs. The people of Springfield are fighting back, including the use of a little known law that allows the citizens to press criminal charges when the prosecutor refuses. They have filed such criminal charges against both Trump and Vance over the violence that has ensued since the GOP team pushed these racist lies. This is our big story. I will also discuss a sheriff in Portage County, Ohio who has incited violence against Harris supporters. And we will have our delightful musical parodies. Join me. Jeanine

The search for French's body uncovered three more loved ones - two Portage County women stored in pickling barrels and a child musical prodigy from Cleveland buried in a shallow grave. Eric shares some road history, including how Wisconsin is the first governmental body to devise and implement a system of numbers to identify roads. They discuss his website StateTrunkTour.com, which explores roads end-to-end and showcases interesting stuff along the way. Why the name? Because a “trunk road” is a road that connects two places of importance - it's a term originally used by the railroads when they had “trunk lines.” Together in this Campfire Conversation, the three discuss travels on certain highways such as the Great River Road, scenic byways in Door County and along Lake Superior, and several of the numbered highways that criss-cross the state, including a highlight of Highway 33 from Port Washington to La Crosse, which offers a remarkable cross-section of Wisconsin with plenty to do and see along ithe way.Follow @statetrunktour on Facebook and Instagram and see https://www.statetrunktour.com/ for more!Inside SponsorsVISIT Lake Geneva: https://bit.ly/3wHvilf Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCX
On April 5th, 1990, Bernhardt and Cora Hartig, both 81, were shot to death in their Atwater, OH home with a .25 caliber gun. Miles away, 18-year-old Tyrone Noling was involved in two non-violent robberies – in one, he stole a .25 caliber gun and in the second, it accidentally discharged, hurting no one. This gun, however, was not the Hartig murder weapon, and despite other, more viable suspects, Portage County investigators targeted Tyrone and convinced his friends to testify against him. All witnesses have since recanted, but after 3 decades, Tyrone is still on death row. Jason talks to Tyrone Noling and Brian Howe, Tyrone's attorney. Scott and Mickey discuss the legend of the Lake Michigan Triangle, a section in the Great Lake that has been the site of many mysterious disappearances of ships, planes, and people for centuries. Generally defined as an area between Ludington, MI, Benton Harbor, MI, and Manitowoc WI, since the middle of the 19th century, countless strange events have occurred in this region of Lake Michigan, leading to the growth of the legend, and leaving researchers searching for answers. Disappearing ships, downed planes, UFOs, and people who have seemingly vanished off the face of the earth have only added to the intrique of one of the most treacherous portions of open water in the world. In the opening banter, we touch on the murder conviction of former Wisconsin Badger Marcus Randle El, and a sad end to the 38-year-old Portage County cold case of former UW-SP student, Janet Raasch. Great Northern Distilling and their relationships with area potato farmers to help make award-winning vodka. Wisconsin ranks 3rd in the nation for potato production, and tops in the nation east of the Mississippi River. Okray Farms is one such member of the 140-strong Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association, and they're among the suppliers of potatoes Great Northern uses for its potato vodka, considered the “healthier” vodka versus the spirits made with grain, including the fact that it is gluten-free, sugar-free, and low in carbohydrates. Siren Shrub Company is a women-owned, Wisconsin based beverage company that specializes in the use of shrubs in their drinks and mixers. Mindy McCord and Layne Cozzolino started Siren Shrub in 2018; their vision for the business stemmed from their experiences with sustainable food systems in a farm-to-table cafe in Stevens Point. They began with jams and jellies in farmers markets. When Layne found out she was pregnant, they discovered shrubs were the perfect replacement for alcohol, which became their prime product that has since expanded to 30 states and over 300 locations. The connection between the Wisconsin farm partners and Siren Shrub is strong and touches on the community focus that Uniquely Wisconsin celebrates.Artists drawn to the area include Stephon Kiba Freeman, who came to UW-Stevens Point in 2009. As a budding artist, he was thinking New York and LA would be where he ventured to next. But he fell in love with the area, truly enjoyed the quiet and in his words, the “underabundance of noise.” Stephon opened Kiba Freeman Art and regularly connects with other artists to gather, open dialogue, share styles, ideas, challenges. He noted that Portage County allows its artists to take chances and celebrate their successes; the entire area has grown an appreciation for art and has been continually developing areas for art. Create Portage County developed a program called “Paint the County” and connected artists with local businesses for mural projects and public art. Freeman himself has done numerous murals in the area.Vision for the Future: Trevor Roark & Curbwise. Curbwise was founded by Trevor Roark during the COVID pandemic as a bicycle-powered delivery service for the Stevens Point area. He moved to the area back in 1998 and used his love of biking the area – especially the notable Green Circle Trail – to inspire Curbwise's creation in 2020. His focus is different from most major companies, as his approach is the triple bottom line - People, Planet then Profit. Trevor started with a three wheeled bicycle with a storage area in the back….and found a perfect partner in the Stevens Point Area Co-op.As his business has grown, he is helping reduce his community's carbon footprint with each mile and delivery. Community Involvement & Togetherness: We also discussed Dr. Sam Dinga and the Makah Foundation. Dr. Dinga came to UW-Stevens Point from Cameroon, in part because his brother had previously attended the school. He also chose UWSP because he received a hand-written letter of invitation from the school, which impressed him. He grew to love the welcoming nature of the community and today serves as the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Coordinator for the Stevens Point Area Public School District, where mentors students and assists with resources. He also started the Makah Foundation, which seeks to build freshwater wells as well as orphanages in West Africa. He started the foundation in memory of his sister, who was a traveling nurse there and had died of stomach complications, related in part of a lack of fresh water in rural areas of Cameroon. He has been heartened by support from Portage County residents and looks forward to a new fundraising event at O'so Brewing in Plover on June 16, 2023.We also talked with Sara Brish, Executive Director of the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, who shared her perspective on Portage County and noted its origin and ongoing history as a place for “makers,” where creativity and industriousness pays off for individuals as well as their communities. Michelle then offers a preview of what we can watch on Uniquely Wisconsin's Portage County episode online, including stories about Boleslaw Kochanowski Iron, a family-oriented blacksmith business in Junction City; Feltz Farm, a multigenerational family farm that not only has one of the largest dairy producing herds in the world, but also strives to educate visitors on the true processes on these farms. Finally, there is Multi Grain Bakery, where Sarah Jo Moore took a self-taught hobby and has turned it into a sizable baking business that is growing in the community.
On this week's episode Falon has an update to a previous case covered on episode 43 (Just the Tip). Portage County has answers after going back to square one on the Janet Raasch case bringing closure to her friends, family, and the community. Then, Mims talks about the recent body of Bailey Zuniga found on December 22nd, 2022 in Ashland County that flooded social media. When it comes to reporting UFO sightings, it often happens that local police departments are the first organizations witnesses turn to. Many times, the reports to police take place while the UFO is still active in the area and patrol officers are able to respond and verify witness accounts. Famous examples are the 1966 case involving Dale Spaur and his partner, Wilbur “Barney” Neff, who chased a UFO from Portage County, Ohio, all the way into Pennsylvania, and another Ohio case, this time in Trumbull County in 1994, involving multiple officers chasing and observing UFOs. Their radio interactions have been preserved in the form of a recording from the police dispatch that was turned over to researcher Kenny Young. This week, we'll look at a 1972 case out of Colby, Kansas, that involved multiple police witnesses and multiple UFOs. Read more →

Dawgman.com's Kim Grinolds spoke this week with Allen Moff, who is the main beat writer covering Kent State, to get his thoughts on the KSU-Washington game from the visitor's point of view. Per the Record-Courier, the paper of record covering the city of Kent and Portage County in Ohio, "... Moff has served as the Record-Courier's Kent State athletics beat writer for nearly 15 years over two separate stints. Allen covered the Golden Flashes men's basketball team's historic run to the NCAA Tournament's Elite 8 in 2002, and returned to the beat just in time to cover the Kent State football team's appearances in the 2012 MAC Championship Game and GoDaddy.com Bowl." The talk between Grinolds and Moff started out with Kent State's head coach, Sean Lewis, and how Lewis and his staff have re-energized the program, especially on offense. Will it be tough to keep Lewis if the Golden Flashes continue to succeed? The two also talk about Kent State's schedule. Starting at Washington would be considered tough enough with the travel, but Oklahoma and Georgia loom quickly on the horizon. Talk turns to Kent State's 'Flash Fast' offense, one that uses spread concepts but will be a run-first attack. Moff talks about the names to know, what the Golden Flashes do well, and also some concerns he has for them on that side of the ball. After a quick break, the conversation moves over to the defensive side of the ball and Moff gives the lowdown on Kent State's moves that they've made to improve a defense that definitely struggled in 2021. They've brought in a new defensive coordinator, as well as some transfer personnel to mix in with a number of returning veterans. Next, Moff gives his take on Kent State's special teams. How comfortable would the Golden Flashes be with a 40-yard field goal to win the game? Finally, they talk about fans coming out to the game and how confident fans are about the season ahead, and what Kent State is capable of doing this weekend. As far as classic UFO cases go, Ohio may very well have more than any other state. There was the 1966 case where Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur and his partner chased a UFO from Portage County, Ohio, all the way into Pennsylvania at speeds up to 100 mph. In 1973, there was the Coyne Incident, where four men in the Army Reserve reported an encounter near Mansfield, Ohio, with a UFO that pulled their helicopter, commanded by Lawrence J. Coyne, up from 1,700 feet to 3,500 feet while the controls were set for a descent. In 1994, police in Trumbull County responded to a police dispatcher who said she'd received calls about a UFO from local citizens. Before the night was over, police from five different departments gave chase, and a recording of their radio exchanges with the dispatch was given to researcher Kenny Young, who brought the case to the attention of the UFO community and the world. A 1971 case from Huron County, Ohio, that had multiple witnesses, including police officers, didn't gain nearly was much notoriety as those above, and one might wonder if it might have been because of the way it was treated by the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena. The main witness sent a report to NICAP, but NICAP was in the midst of changes that may or not have been overseen by either or both the Air Force and the CIA. Read more →

On August 29, 1965 headlines across the country all read “UFO Prober Says There's Nothing to Indicate Any UFOs Extraterrestrial.” Air Force Major Hector Quintanilla, a physicist and head of the Project Blue Book, made a statement following the huge spate of UFO sightings across the country that month. There were calls that summer for a new probe into the government's handling of the UFO mystery, including statements by a young Stanton Friedman who believed there was a mathematical likelihood that we were being visited by beings from another planet. 1966 was the year that stretched the Air Force's credibility to it's breaking point in Dexter-Hillsdale, the year that would lead to a chase stretching from Portage County, Ohio into Pennsylvania, the year that a monster walked the streets of Erie, P.A., and the year of the Garuda, the arrival of the Mothman. The enigmatic AP Strange joins the pod again to talk about the arrival of the monster in 1966. Sources: “North America 1966: Development of a Great Wave” by John A.
