The High Priestess represents my guest on the Tarot Table. This card symbolizes intuition, mystery, and spiritual wisdom. Depicted between two pillars representing duality, she is a gatekeeper to hidden truths. Her flowing robes, crescent moon, and veil adorned with pomegranates emphasize her connection to the subconscious and sacred knowledge. She often holds a scroll, representing esoteric wisdom, partially hidden to signify that some truths are revealed only when ready. The card encourages trusting intuition, seeking deeper understanding, and balancing logic with inner guidance. In readings, it suggests introspection, patience, and uncovering secrets, while reversed may indicate blocked intuition or disconnection from self. The High Priestess represents my guest, Sherry Sternthal.Who Is  Sherry Sternthal?Sherry Sternthal is a Psychic Medium whose journey into spirituality began after the loss of her mother to breast cancer. During a challenging time as a new mother going through a divorce, journaling became her outlet for processing emotions and self-discovery. Her interest in mediumship deepened after attending a meditation group where she connected with her mother and grandmother, affirming her belief in the continued presence of loved ones. Inspired by readings on angels, spirit guides, and near-death experiences, Sherry found inner peace and clarity. After retiring as a Reading Specialist, she embraced her intuition and began practicing mediumship to help others heal. You can connect with Sherry on her website: https://www.heavenlymemos.com/ I will talk to you again next Friday I have a treat.  I'm featuring an astrologer who will guide us through the energetic influences of each season. How can school leaders make informed decisions about reading curriculum when they know the home environments among their student body vary widely?I don't envy people tasked with these kinds of decisions. My opinion is that schools should ensure students get their instructional needs met during the school day, because it's difficult to control what happens to students once they leave the school campus.Direct instruction of reading has to fall on the plate of educators. If we assume certain practices will be done at home consistently, we create huge equity issues. With all that being said, school staff can work to create a shared partnership with families and communities. Even though they might aim to include the essentials during the school day, they can provide opportunities and tools for students and families to support literacy outside formal classroom instruction.I invited Susan Brady, a reading specialist from Illinois, to De Facto Leaders episode 179 to discuss how she's helped her community get access to books and extracurricular activities that support literacy. Susan Brady has been in the teaching profession for over 40 years. She worked in a private school where she taught first grade and kindergarten. Sixteen years ago she began work in the public schools as a kindergarten teacher. In 2008, she received her Master's Degree in Reading from Governors State University and became a Reading Specialist. She moved to middle school 5 years ago and works with small groups, large groups, and push-ins. She also has started and run engaging book clubs for her students to help get them excited about reading. This episode is part of the National Literacy Month series of podcasts, presented in partnership between the Be Podcast Network and Reading Is Fundamental (RIF).In this conversation, Susan shares:✅Are reading teachers getting the pre-service training they need to critically evaluate research and implement instructional practices?✅Relying a curriculum versus leveraging a curriculum to guide your practice✅How to start a book club and get students excited about reading✅Where to find inexpensive or free books for schools and families✅Navigating logistical and equity issues when hosting community events and running extracurriculars. The following resources were mentioned in this episode:Our partner for the National Literacy Month Campaign, Reading Is Fundamental (https://www.rif.org)Better World Books (https://www.betterworldbooks.com/)First Book (https://firstbook.org)BookShare (https://www.bookshare.org) United for Literacy (https://www.bookshare.org)Little Free Library (https://littlefreelibrary.org)In this episode, I mention the School of Clinical Leadership, my program that helps related service providers develop a strategic plan for putting executive functioning support in place in collaboration with their school teams. We have three grown sons and three grandchildren. Here's my why for writing: I became an avid reader as a teenager and love to lose myself in a great story, but that is not where my story begins. My story begins with a young girl who struggled to learn to read due to having Dyslexia. Thanks to parents, educators and tutors who were dedicated to helping me to become literate, I was able to not only learn to read and write but to find a true passion in literacy. After starting as a Special Education Teacher, I realized how little I knew about teaching others to read and went back to school. Becoming a Reading Specialist and Literacy Coach allowed me to be able to help other children to become readers and writers. Participating in the National Writing Project helped me to not only become a stronger teacher of writing but also to develop my voice as a writer. Thanks for visiting; feel free to get in touch if you have questions about my books, and don't forget to sign up for my newsletter to be one of the first to get updates.Secrets in the Heartland SeriesThis series of Mystery/Thriller fiction books follows Detective Kass Minor and FBI Agent Robert Matthews as they work to solve crimes in and around the Springfield, Missouri, region of the United States.Book 1-The FarmHave you ever wondered how an ordinary person could know and interact with a serial killer and not know it until it was too late? The Farm, book one in The Murder in the Heartland series, centers on the disappearance of Kelsey Learner, a seemingly ordinary midwestern single mom. Parallel to the investigation into Kelsey's disappearance, a pair of serial killers are murdering in the area for what they perceive to be a higher good. Police have yet to connect their victims and, in some cases, even know they are missing. Is Kelsey their latest victim, or is it a coincidence that a serial killer couple is on the loose and Kelsey has vanished?Book 2- Dismantling the FarmFBI Agent Robert Matthews came from a long line of civil servants, but it was his grandfather's love of a 1930s movie about the FBI that had made being an agent Robert's dream. He had visions of car chases, gun fights, and media releases that featured his name. Instead, he got assigned to the Springfield, Missouri field office, where he spent his days doing paperwork, going out on investigative interviews, testifying in court, or practicing firearms use and defensive tactics. When he is assigned to look into the disappearance of a young man as a favor to a friend of the Assistant Director of the FBI, no one could have predicted how big the case would be.Book 3-Remembering the FarmThe third book in the Secrets in the Heartland series brings the reader back to answer some of their lingering questions. When two boys go missing in Springfield, Detective Kass Minor must move fast to try to bring them home safely. Working with a new partner who is no Mitch Leet, she has no idea what this investigation will reveal. Is Kelsey Learner still alive, or did she perish at the hands of the serial killers? Will learning the truth help Claire to move forward in her life?https://andreahecknerauthor.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

Is it possible to get awesome results from email marketing? Can email take your business from the brink of collapsing to amazing heights and success? Yes, it can. And we're getting to hear from one of our clients - the lovely April McMurtrey from Learn Reading, who's sharing how she increased her revenue by 400% in just ONE year! Pretty unbelievable, right? But it's true. Let's get the whole story from April! SOME EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: (0:19) Join our FREE Facebook group.(2:51) Who is April McMurtrey?(5:07) When did April start using email marketing in her business?(6:42) What did April's email marketing look like when she first started?(7:54) What's the first change April made when she joined our world?(9:08) What happened when April started making changes to her email marketing?(12:55) How April got a 400% increase in sales in just 12 months.(14:32) How does April feel about her email marketing now?(16:46) What's ONE action April recommends people take when it comes to email marketing?(19:31) Subject line of the week.[podcast_subscribe id="7224"]Who is April McMurtrey?April is a Dyslexia and Reading Specialist who teaches struggling and dyslexic readers how to read. In a nutshell, April's come up with a better, easier, and faster way of learning how to read. Isn't that overwhelmingly awesome?!After teaching reading for 30 years, April started her private practice as a reading specialist. She then got certified in dyslexia therapy and testing and went on to develop her programme after 25 years of experience in seeing what works and what doesn't. After creating her curriculum for dyslexic and struggling learners, she launched her business and programme (backed up by a lifetime of skill and expertise) in March 2020.When did April start using email marketing in her business?April started using email marketing about a year after she launched her business. She knew she wanted to do email marketing from the start, but we all know the learning curve at the beginning is quite steep. And April had no idea where to start. Like most, April is in business to help people – not to necessarily learn all the stuff that goes with running a business. When we asked her about her biggest barrier to getting started with email marketing, April told us she didn't know how to find someone who could help her learn. She had a lot of subscribers on her list but no idea what to do with them. April recognised the power of emails though. She could see all the professional-sounding and impressive emails landing in her inbox, and she knew the marketers who were sending those emails were following some sort of sequence to be able to sell. That's what April wanted to be able to do, too. But at the time, she just didn't know how. What did April's email marketing look like when she first started? At the start of her email marketing journey, April would send an email once every couple of months just to tell her subscribers about any products she had for sale. People on April's list had no real idea who she was, and she's pretty sure a lot of them would unsubscribe as soon as they realised she was trying to sell to them. So her emails were sporadic, and she had no automation. What's the first change April made when she joined our world? After spending some time trying to learn about email marketing through podcasts, April started binge-listening to ours. And that's what eventually led her to join our membership The...

By reframing failure as feedback, we can create a safe and encouraging learning environment, motivating students to persevere and improve. Rita also underscored the significance of administrators actively immersing themselves in classrooms.   When you work with your employees or clients, what assumptions are you making about their reading skills? If you are like me, you might assume that almost everyone you work with reads easily, but that is likely untrue. Lois Letchford joined me at the Edges of Lean to talk about her experience as the parent of a child with dyslexia and how lean thinkers can help to create success for adults with dyslexia. Lois Letchford has written a book about her experiences called “Reversed: A Memoir.” Lois Letchford    Lois Letchford's powerful memoir "Reversed" chronicles an extraordinary personal journey of overcoming daunting odds with inspiration and hope. Possessing a Master of Science in Literacy and Learning from the University at Albany and experience as a Reading Specialist at East Derwent Primary School, Lois stumbled upon her own previously undiagnosed learning difference at 39 while teaching her second son to read. This discovery set her on an unwavering pursuit for answers. With sheer determination and unyielding resilience, Lois confronted challenges and battled self-doubt head-on, proving that no obstacle is insurmountable.  As the founder of Lois Letchford Language, Literacy, and Learning tutoring, she is dedicated to assisting others facing similar challenges. "Reversed" serves as a beacon of hope, sharing Lois' mission and vision of empowering individuals with dyslexia.   KEY TOPICS IN THIS PODCAST: 00:02:58 - Frustration with traditional reading methods 00:03:09 - Captain Cook and exploration. 00:05:29 - The importance of engaging students' curiosity in learning 00:07:05 - Curiosity and brain power. 00:08:28 - The benefits of personalized and engaging teaching methods 00:10:53 - Reading difficulties among adults. 00:10:11 - The ongoing challenges of reading as an adult with dyslexia 00:14:23 - Strengths and weaknesses 00:18:00 - Embracing Differences and Dyslexia 00:24:22 - The cost of writing books. 00:30:05 - Reading disabilities and learning. 00:35:11 - Creating a safe environment. 00:36:44 - What does inclusion mean? Creating a safe and inclusive environment is essential for individuals with reading disabilities to thrive in the workplace. Writing reviews significantly impacts the visibility and success of books and podcasts. Reviews provide valuable feedback and validation for authors and creators. Positive reviews boost authors' confidence and encourage them to produce more quality content. Leaving reviews is an impactful yet simple way for audiences to support authors and creators. Practicing empathy leads to a better understanding of different perspectives and abilities. Withholding judgment creates space for open-mindedness in interactions. That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership

I am excited to finally have the final member of my doctoral research team on this episode of the podcast. Christine has a phenomenal background in education and walks us through some of the lessons we have learned during our journey in our research to discover why it is so important to strive towards building a learning organization. She continually connects to the essence of servant leadership by reminding us that it is all about the people and the relationships we make. Christine uses some great examples to teach the building blocks of a learning organization (supportive learning environment, concrete learning practices, & leadership that reinforces learning), illustrates the value of establishing a community of practice, and emphasizes the value of doing one thing with precision.  Don't get too focused on the forest that you forget to see the trees as you listen. There are some great insights provided throughout this episode from our research and experience that are applicable across many disciplines and organizations that can transform a reactive training organization into a proactive learning organization. You can build processes that recognize the value of the individuals. on your teams and build practices that reinforce the ability of everyone to learn from one another.  Christine Kresge is the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Montrose Area School District where she is responsible for K-12 curriculum, Federal Programs, and grant writing. Prior to her nine years as a curriculum director, Christine was a middle school reading specialist, a fourth-grade teacher, and a seventh-grade teacher. She also spent time as a social worker working in a therapeutic capacity with children diagnosed with behavior disorders. Christine holds a bachelor's degree in Social Work, a Master of Art in Teaching degree, a Principal K-12 certificate, and a Reading Specialist certificate. She is currently a third-year student at the University of Miami where she is pursuing her doctorate in Applied Learning Sciences. WE ARE ALL GUILTY OF BEING THE LAST CAR IN THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT FROM TIME TO TIME.There's always one more thing to do.  One more set of copies to make. One more…one more. And then it becomes a pattern.  Staying late at school night after night…  Bringing home work to complete on the weekends becomes the norm. Before you know it - you're THAT teacher who has no boundaries and feels like their work day as no end and no beginning.Today on the podcast, we're going to talk about something that I was NOT the best at when I was in the classroom. When I first started teaching I didn't have any kids yet, I wasn't married, and I didn't have a lot at home that I had to devote my time to. So - I poured all of my time and energy into teaching and being in the classroom.  And, quite honestly, I could do that because of my circumstances, but that didn't really set me up for success later when I did have a family and I did need to prioritize a work/home balance.  When we don't develop a healthy balance, we start to establish some bad habits. This week, I'm interviewing Kristen Donegan of Easy Teaching Tools.  Kristen Donegan has been an elementary school teacher and Reading Specialist since 2005 in both California and O'ahu, Hawaii. She has enjoyed teaching kindergarten, first grade, a 1/2 combo, and second grade before resigning to continue Easy Teaching Tools Inc. and raise her daughter & son. Kristen has also presented at professional development conferences such as SDE Nationals and Teach Your Heart Out. Founded in 2010, Easy Teaching Tools has helped over a thousand busy teachers implement classroom hacks to save time, implement research-based practices to meet the needs of their students, and focus on work-life balance.Kristen is sharing how teachers can take their time back and be that teacher that leaves at their contracted time, AND doesn't have to feel bad or guilty for doing so!FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES VISIT:  classroomnook.com/podcast/139LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODEConnect with Kristen at Easy Teaching Tools: InstagramFacebookBlogPodcastGrab Kristen's FREE Sub Plans Template HERE!
