Can we convict Sasquatch in a court of law? Brian takes the single question that earned its own chapter in his first book, Sasquatch Unleashed: The Truth Behind the Legend, and puts the big fella on trial under the same rules that decide real cases.Drawing on sixteen years carrying a badge, including time with the Atlanta Police Department, and close to forty years chasing this animal in the field, Brian builds the Sasquatch case the way a working investigator builds any case, brick by brick, and then tears it apart on cross-examination so you hear the strongest version of both sides before you render a verdict. This is a working tour through the five kinds of evidence that show up in nearly every American courtroom, and how the Bigfoot question performs against each one. Real evidence, the physical proof, gets weighed against the footprint casts, the dermal ridges, the alleged hair and the chain-of-custody problems that would sink half of it before trial.Documentary evidence, demonstrative evidence, and the famous Patterson-Gimlin film all face the same scrutiny, with an honest look at the costume claims, the hoaxers who confessed, and why a piece of footage shot at Bluff Creek in nineteen sixty-seven still resists explanation more than half a century later. Testimonial evidence, the tens of thousands of eyewitness accounts from police officers, wildlife biologists, soldiers, hunters and truckers, gets prosecuted hard and then cross-examined just as hard, because eyewitness memory is the most fragile thing in the entire courtroom. And digital evidence, the trail-camera photos, thermal clips and cell-phone video, runs straight into the deepfake era, where better technology has somehow made the case harder to prove rather than easier.Along the way the episode walks through the real material that defines this subject, from the Bossburg Cripplefoot tracks and the work of Grover Krantz and Jeff Meldrum to the Oxford DNA study led by Bryan Sykes, the Melba Ketchum results, the new-species precedents of the mountain gorilla, the coelacanth and the saola, and the body-shaped hole at the center of the whole question.Brian lays out the difference between the preponderance standard and proof beyond a reasonable doubt, explains exactly why a circumstantial case can still convict, and then does the thing most people in this field never have the nerve to do. He hands you the verdict. He also puts his own card on the table, including the daylight sighting he had in Washington State in twenty twenty-four, and explains why, as an atheist and a rigor-first researcher with no patience for the woo, he still argues that his own eyewitness account has no business moving the jury.If you care about Bigfoot evidence, Sasquatch research, cryptid investigation done with actual standards, and the honest question of what it would really take to confirm an unknown North American primate, this one is built for you. You are the jury. Weigh it honestly.Email BrianJoin Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? We are so thrilled to have not just one guest this episode but two - Adrianne Meldrum and Heather Brand! Adrianne Meldrum founded and owns Made for Math, a fully online math center that supports students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other math-related learning challenges. She is a certified Multisensory Math Instructor and holds a master's degree from Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity. Adrianne lives in Arizona with her husband and three sons, where she enjoys the beautiful sunsets. Heather Brand, M.Ed., is a licensed educator with two decades of experience teaching students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. She currently works at Made for Math, supporting learners with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other learning differences, and holds certifications in multisensory math instruction and reading intervention. Heather is passionate about sharing practical, structured strategies that help teachers confidently support all students while making math engaging and enjoyable. In this episode of the show, we unpack why dyscalculia is so hard to identify and why it often overlaps with conditions such as dyslexia and ADHD/ADD. In fact, Adrianne and Heather talk about how many of the students whom they see arrive with multiple diagnoses, and that raises a truly important question: when a child struggles with math, what's really causing the difficulty? Throughout our conversation, we take a look at how professionals sort through those overlapping factors, and Adrianne and Heather explain how assessments can reveal specific types of math struggles, whether they involve language, memory, sequencing, or foundational number sense, and they explain why understanding the root cause is so important. We also talk through some real classroom scenarios and case studies that showcase how these challenges actually take place in everyday learning. From students who can perform calculations but freeze when faced with word problems, to those who mix up the direction of their work or struggle to recall math facts, all of these examples help clarify what educators and parents should watch out for. In addition, we discuss practical strategies that can help students succeed! Adrianne and Heather share some approaches that build on understanding, strengthen math fact retrieval, and reduce the working memory load that can often overwhelm students, especially those with ADHD. They also touch upon how simple environmental changes, such as minimizing distractions and organizing information more clearly, can dramatically improve learning. Perhaps most importantly, however, we discuss how the right kind of instruction doesn't just improve math performance. It can actually rebuild confidence and reduce the anxiety that often accompanies math struggles! Enjoy our conversation with Adrianne Meldrum and Heather Brand! Show Notes: [3:56] - Dyscalculia is often diagnosed late and overlaps with other conditions, further complicating diagnosis. [6:44] - Early math struggles so often go unnoticed, yet they affect multiple areas alongside reading or attention difficulties. [9:50] - Students may calculate correctly but fail at word problems because of language or vocabulary challenges. [10:37] - Heather reflects on multi-diagnosed students who often show math difficulties that overlap with dyslexia, ADHD, or dysgraphia symptoms. [12:47] - When Heather assesses, she assesses whether math struggles stem from dyscalculia or other diagnoses. [15:30] - Observing students' problem-solving can help reveal specific issues such as directionality, that are separate from place value understanding. [16:49] - We hear how conceptual understanding uses visuals, while fact retrieval relies on memorization and fluency practice. [19:50] - Heather discusses how she uses cues and repetition before timed exercises, helping students get things right before they start doing them automatically. [23:47] - We hear how schema-based strategies teach students to analyze story problems, rather than linking words directly to operations. [26:23] - Heather explains and breaks down the ROMANS strategy. [29:34] - ADHD increases cognitive demands in math, making working memory and flexible problem-solving even more difficult. [30:15] - Adrianne reflects on how minimizing task switching and using visual support helps students with ADHD maintain attention and limit mistakes. [33:33] - Multiple sources for instructions can sometimes confuse students, so limiting transitions and providing frequent feedback is so important! [35:49] - Adrianne explains how reducing visual and language clutter helps protect working memory and boosts student confidence and learning ability. [37:42] - Matching instruction to a child's learning profile can drastically help increase engagement, understanding, and self-confidence! [38:19] - Adrianne highlights how evidence-based strategies benefit all students, not just those with diagnoses. [40:16] - How can listeners connect with Adrianne and Heather? Trigger warning: suicide and suicidal ideationThis week we have the privilege to talk to someone with incredible experience working in the mental health space.Ken Meldrum has a history of being a registered nurse for 46 years working mainly in Rural, Remote Health and Mental Health. He specialised in Suicide Prevention and Men's Health during the last 20 years.Ken retired from Qld Health 5 years ago and has since been employed with Lifeline Community Recovery, Stand By Support after Suicide Service and currently is working with Uniting Care Farmer to Farmer Support Service across Southern Qld and Far North Qld.Ken also established a Suicide Prevention Network since retirement in Boonah, Qld, through which he was able to raise money to establish two Blue Tractors within that farming community with the sign saying “Feeling Blue – Get Help” which has raised a lot of interest and sparked many conversations around suicide and suicide prevention. Other Communities across Qld, NSW and Tasmania are also establishing similar structures.Since May Ken has worked with old friends he has known for over 50 years from the motorcycling community to establish Blue Bikes on busy roads across Norther NSW and Qld with the same message, initially three were planned from March last year but the number is now approaching 20, we established a not-for-profit organisation titled the Blue Motorcycle Project Inc and a Facebook Group with now over 600 members. In this episode he shares:- His life before working in nursing and how early experiences shaped his perspective of suicide- His entry into nursing, work in jails and psychiatric wards, and the “baptism of fire” training that shaped his approach- His encounters with people who took their own lives and the impact of losing patients and friends unexpectedly- How rural and remote work and Indigenous community experience exposed the scale and causes of suicide risk- The Blue Tractor and Blue Motorcycle Project—why visible roadside blue machinery/bikes start conversations about suicide- The power of practical community-focused prevention- His own lived experience of suicidal ideation, the protective factors that kept him alive, and what recovery looked like- How connection, simple listening (“do no harm”), and community partnerships can reduce isolation and save livesKey Quotes"I just fell into a really dark place and I started to have real thoughts about taking my life.""It's the lack of connections, the loss of connections that cause the problem. Once people become isolated, that's when they're at risk.""The bottom line, the most important thing we can do is do no harm. Sit down and listen to 'em. We’re talking about where faith & DNA collide. This is a throwback episode from my 2018 interview with Dr Simon Southerton. We’ll discuss how this former LDS bishop got excommunicated over his writings about DNA problems with the Book of Mormon and his book “Losing a Lost Tribe.” Check out our conversation… https://youtu.be/N0pD5jz01OA Chapters 0:00 Faith & DNA Collision Result in Excommunication 18:41 Cohen Haplotype 36:06 DNA Shouldn’t Vanish 54:45 The Flood & Religious Beliefs Check out our other conversations on DNA & Book of Mormon: https://gospeltangents.com/lds_theology/dna-book-of-mormon/ Faith & DNA Collision: LDS Bishop to Genetic Skeptic What happens when a molecular geneticist, serving as a faithful LDS Bishop, encounters scientific data that directly contradicts the keystone of his religion? I'm excited to release the full video of our 2018 interview with Australian researcher Dr. Simon Southerton. A former Senior Research Scientist with the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization), Dr. Southerton's journey from devout leader to vocal critic is one of the most compelling narratives in the world of Mormon studies. Dr. Southerton utilizes his expertise in population genetics to tackle apologetic theories regarding the Book of Mormon, offering a hard-hitting look at DNA, history, and the cost of following his conscience. Global Flood and “Cognitive Dissonance” Dr. Southerton's transition didn’t begin with DNA, but with the Flood. While serving as a bishop, he read an Ensign article classifying those who believe in a “local flood” (rather than a global catastrophe 4,500 years ago) as effectively denying the faith. Knowing that a global flood is scientifically impossible due to geological and genetic evidence, he felt alienated. This prompted him to research Native American DNA, hoping to find evidence supporting the Book of Mormon. Instead, he found that 99% of Native American markers are derived from Asia, with the remainder being post-Columbus European or African admixture. The realization hit him during a family night: “We chose Book of Mormon stories… by the end of that song I was pretty deeply upset… I remember thinking at the time I’m never going to sing that song again with my children because it’s wrong.” “Vanishing DNA” Theory A major portion of the interview addresses the apologetic argument—promoted by scholars like Ugo Perego—that Lehi's party was so small their DNA “vanished” or was swamped by existing populations. Southerton rejects this as inconsistent with the text. He argues that the Book of Mormon describes massive civilizations and rapid population growth, not a small family that immediately disappeared into a dominant culture. He notes that whole-genome sequencing of ancient Mayans consistently shows Asian ancestry, not Middle Eastern. Cohen Haplotype vs. The X Lineage Dr. Southerton explains why DNA can track ancient migrations if they actually occurred. He points to the Lemba tribe in Africa, who claimed Jewish ancestry. Genetic testing revealed they carried the “Cohen Haplotype,” a specific Semitic Y-chromosome marker, vindicating their oral history. Conversely, he takes aim at the theories of Rodney Meldrum, whom he characterizes as a “snake oil salesman”. Meldrum argues the “X Lineage” in North America is evidence of Middle Eastern migration. Southerton clarifies that the X lineage is an ancient marker arriving roughly 15,000 years ago—long before the Nephites—and is distantly related to Middle Eastern markers, splitting off 30,000 years ago. The Viking Argument Apologists often argue that since we can’t find Viking DNA in the Americas (despite knowing they were there), we shouldn’t expect to find Nephite DNA. Southerton dismisses this parallel. He argues that Vikings were raiders and traders who didn’t establish massive, centuries-long civilizations comparable to the Nephites and Lamanites described in the scriptures. Excommunication and Life After Faith Finally, Dr. Southerton opens up about the “draconian” process of his excommunication. While the Church charged him with “inappropriate relationships” during a separation from his wife, Southerton asserts the true motivation was his book, Losing a Lost Tribe. He describes the disciplinary council as a “15th-century” process where the outcome is decided before the accused enters the room. Today, Southerton identifies as agnostic, finding peace outside of organized religion. He emphasizes that one does not need the Church to be a “delightful, decent, good human being.” Copyright © 2026 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission
This is not a show I ever planned to do. In all my years of podcasting, I've never felt compelled to look back and take stock of where we've been. But twenty twenty-four and twenty twenty-five have been different. These years have been brutal for our community, and I couldn't stay silent any longer. We lost giants. Real giants. Men who shaped the very foundation of modern Sasquatch research and carried the torch forward into the twenty-first century. Tonight, I'm setting aside whatever differences might have existed to honor what they gave us and acknowledge that we've lost some truly important figures.Doctor Jeff Meldrum passed away in September of twenty twenty-five after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was sixty-seven years old. The full professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University gave our community something precious: legitimacy. With his collection of over three hundred footprint casts and his landmark book Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, he picked up where Grover Krantz left off and continued the tradition of academic rigor in a field that desperately needed it.I had the privilege of sitting down with Jeff just a few weeks before he passed, and that conversation will stay with me forever.Henry Franzoni died on August twenty-second, twenty twenty-four, also at sixty-seven. If Meldrum brought scientific credibility to Bigfoot research, Henry brought the internet. Back in nineteen ninety-three, he created the first Bigfoot website and the first online discussion group, the Internet Virtual Bigfoot Conference. From that foundation grew pretty much every Bigfoot organization and website you see today. I interviewed Henry about a year before he passed, and afterward he sent me a signed copy of his book, Failing in a Cooler Way: Why I Never Found Bigfoot. That title tells you everything you need to know about who Henry was as a person.Steven Streufert, owner of Bigfoot Books in Willow Creek, California, is also gone now. Steven was an institution, a historian and scholar who knew the stories, the players, and the timeline of how this phenomenon evolved from local legend to international sensation. He was a key member of the Bluff Creek Project, the team that rediscovered the exact location where Patterson and Gimlin filmed their famous footage in nineteen sixty-seven. Steven and I had our public disagreements in his Facebook group, but that's what a community of researchers should look like. We can all have our opinions and still show mutual respect for one another.Beyond the deaths, we lost places too. The Bigfoot Discovery Museum in Felton, California, closed its doors after twenty years. And in December of twenty twenty-four, two men from Portland died from exposure in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest while searching for Sasquatch on Christmas Eve.I explore the legacies of these three researchers, discuss the current state of Sasquatch research, examine the Patterson-Gimlin film at fifty-seven years, address what the skeptics say, talk about the nearly one thousand witnesses I've interviewed over almost forty years, and reflect on the lessons we can learn from the men we lost. I also share a word about safety for anyone venturing into the wilderness in pursuit of this mystery. The disagreements don't matter. The bickering doesn't matter. What matters is the work. What matters is the pursuit. These men spent their lives investigating something that most of society considers a joke, and they did it because they believed the truth was worth pursuing. Their torches have been passed. We'll do our best to carry them forward.Leave Brian A Voicemail Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.
In this special remastered episode of Sasquatch Odyssey, we honor the late Dr. Jeff Meldrum — a man whose dedication, kindness, and scientific curiosity forever changed the way the world views Sasquatch research. There are some people who leave a mark so deep, so genuine, that their absence feels almost impossible to comprehend. For me, one of those people was Dr. Jeff Meldrum.I first met Jeff back in March of 2021, when I was just a fledgling podcaster trying to find my footing. He didn't have to say yes to being on my show — but he did. Graciously. Humbly. From that moment on, he set the tone for the kind of person I'd come to know him to be.Just a few short years later, I found myself standing beside him on stage, sharing the spotlight with Jeff, Cliff Barackman, and Michael Freeman at a conference in Idaho. It was surreal — the same man I had admired for years was now a colleague, a friend, and a mentor. The last time I saw Jeff was back at the end of July, at the Smoky Mountain Bigfoot Conference in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We had just finished setting up our booths when I noticed Jeff sitting quietly off to the side. I carried over the plaster casts of the footprints from our property — as I'd done before — hoping to get his thoughts. We sat and talked for a while — about his upcoming retirement, about life, and about the things that still fascinated him most. He joked about trying to convince his wife, Lauren, that he needed more space at home to store his growing collection of casts since he'd be losing his massive lab space at the university.I laughed, but something felt different. Jeff still had that kindness in his eyes, that thoughtful way about him — but there was a quiet heaviness there too.Still, as always, he was generous with his time and his spirit.I had no idea it would be the last time I'd see him.Since his passing, I've watched as countless people have shared their memories and tributes — from students and colleagues to lifelong fans around the world.I didn't rush to do the same, because I needed time. Time to sit with the loss. Time to reflect on what Jeff meant to me, and to this community. So tonight, I want to honor him in the most fitting way I can think of — by going back to where it all began. What you're about to hear is our very first conversation — fully remastered from the original Sasquatch Odyssey interview that aired back in March of 2021.This is my way of saying thank you, Jeff. For your kindness. For your brilliance. And for the legacy you've left behind in the study of Sasquatch — and in the hearts of all of us who were lucky enough to know you.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.
In this installment of Sasquatch Tracks, the team reunites after a short hiatus to remember the life and work of a pair of icons in the field of anthropology, with the passing of Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum and Dr. Jane Goodall. Dr. Jane Morris Goodall, renowned primatologist, ethologist, and conservationist, dedicated her life to expanding humanity's understanding of the natural world and its profound interconnections. Dr. Jane Goodall was not only as a scientist but a humanitarian and moral leader, whose legacy endures in every forest preserved, every animal protected, and every young mind awakened to wonder. Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary era in science and environmental stewardship. Dr. Jeffrey “Jeff” Meldrum (1958–2025) was a renowned American anthropologist and professor at Idaho State University, best known for his work on primate locomotion, foot morphology, and the evolution of human bipedalism. At Idaho State, Meldrum taught anatomy, evolution, and primatology and conducted research into evolutionary morphology, with special emphasis on how the foot evolved to support upright walking in hominins. However, Meldrum was best known as one of the most prominent scientists to engage seriously with the Bigfoot (Sasquatch) topic, publishing Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science and curating a large collection of footprint casts—while remaining committed to applying scientific rigor to controversial claims, in work that drew both admiration and critique as he straddled the boundary between mainstream anthropology and cryptozoology. Dr. Meldrum passed away on September 10, 2025, following a brief battle with brain cancer at age 67. We celebrate the life, and discuss the work of these two great luminaries in science, on this very special episode of Sasquatch Tracks. I'm taking a look at Bigfoot sightings in Idaho this week, in Custer County, in honor of Dr. Jeff Meldrum, who sadly passed away last week. A one of the few mainstream scientists to take the Bigfoot phenomenon seriously, Dr. Meldrum brought a keen scientific eye to footprints, behaviors, and other evidence of the legendary creature's existence. He was a longtime professor of anthropology at Idaho State University, so this week I'm examining Sasquatch stories from the state he was best known for. A river rafter has rocks thrown at him by an unseen creature, a man hears something monstrous stalking around outside his tent, a camp staffer hears horrifying screams at night outside his cabin, Boy Scouts see a Bigfoot cross the trail in front of them as they hike, and a hunter sees a Sasquatch walking along a ridge. A Dr. Jeff Meldrum Tribute Show ✨We're hosting a special open-mic podcast to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Jeff Meldrum — professor, researcher, and friend to so many in the Bigfoot and science communities.
This special rebroadcast honors the late Dr. Jeff Meldrum, whose passing marks the loss of one of the most respected voices in the field of anthropology and cryptozoology. Originally recorded after a chance meeting at a remote gas station—a moment that seemed to embody synchronicity or some greater cosmic order—this conversation remains one of Kelly's most meaningful and in-depth interviews. Dr. Meldrum, a Full Professor of Anatomy & Anthropology with a Ph.D. in Anatomical Sciences, devoted his career to the study of human bipedalism and the possibility of a mystery primate known as Bigfoot. His rigorous evaluation of footprint evidence set a high standard for scientific inquiry in a field often clouded with speculation. As Skeptic Brian Dunning once remarked, “The work of responsible scientists like Dr. Meldrum is exactly what true skeptics should be asking the Bigfoot community for, not criticizing him for it.” In this conversation, Dr. Meldrum shares thoughtful insights into why physical remains have proven so elusive, the limitations of DNA evidence to date, a detailed analysis of the famous Patterson-Gimlin film, and what paths future research might take to finally address this enduring mystery. His clarity, objectivity, and commitment to science made him one of The Captain's greatest academic heroes—and his voice will be deeply missed.
Episode Summary: In Part 2 of our compelling interview with Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum, we go deeper into the world of Bigfoot research—dissecting the controversies, modern encounters, and the future of the field. This episode explores: •The most compelling modern sightings and encounters •The role of hoaxes—how they've hurt and strangely helped the field •Why Dr. Meldrum believes the Patterson-Gimlin film still holds scientific merit •How drone technology, environmental DNA (eDNA), and emerging tools could revolutionize the search •What it would take for mainstream science to finally take Sasquatch seriously This conversation brings science and mystery face-to-face—and asks the question: what if we've been overlooking something right in front of us? Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum is one of the foremost academic researchers in the field of Bigfoot studies, with over 300 footprint casts and years of experience in primate locomotion and human evolution. In this second half of our discussion, Dr. Meldrum shares what keeps him motivated despite ridicule and resistance from the academic world.
Episode Summary: In this fascinating two-part series, we enter the mysterious world of cryptozoology with one of its most respected voices—Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum, professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University. Known for his scientific approach to the elusive Bigfoot phenomenon, Dr. Meldrum has dedicated decades of academic research to the study of primate locomotion and unexplained footprints found throughout North America. In Part 1, we explore: •Dr. Meldrum's background and how he became interested in the subject of Bigfoot •The scientific case for Sasquatch, grounded in anatomy and primate evolution •Key footprint discoveries, including the famous Bossburg Cripple Foot tracks •How evidence is analyzed through a biological and biomechanical lens •The tension between mainstream science and fringe research—and why Dr. Meldrum remains undeterred Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, this episode will challenge what you think you know about Bigfoot and what science can—and can't—explain.
What if hitting rock bottom was actually the beginning of everything? It's often in these moments that we learn our greatest lessons. For my guest, Milo Meldrum, she used it to build a thriving business that honors her season of life, even while she was sharing a one-bedroom flat , whose lounge she birthed her baby in!In this episode, I sat down with the grounded and glowing Milo, a creative entrepreneur and mama of two, who turned her lowest moment into the launchpad for her now-thriving tallow skincare business.Milo first started making her own tallow whip four years ago, to help with stretch marks from her first pregnancy, and then as a nappy rash cream for her son. When she couldn't find anyone selling it in New Zealand, she saw the gap in the market and decided to start her own business. If you've ever felt torn between building your dreams and being present for your babies, Milo brings the kind of quiet wisdom that will show you it's possible to do both beautifully and on your own terms. What You'll Learn:The exact moment Milo declared "this is my rock bottom" and decided to take actionHer three non-negotiable foundations for combining motherhood and business successfullyWhy she locks herself out of social media when parenting (and how it transformed her presence)The daily structure that lets her run a thriving business in just 3 hours a dayHow giving up the blame game became her secret weapon for taking control of her life Hosted on Acast. One of those topics is Book of Mormon Geography ideas and theories. Meaning where did the events in the Book of Mormon take place. Now while there are many ideas there are really two that seem to draw the most attention one is the Meso-American Model and the other is the Heartland Model. Today's episode is all about the Heartland Model, and when talking about the Heartland one man stands above all others in that field, his name is Rod Meldrum and lucky for us he agreed to come on the podcast and have a conversation about the Heartland Model. The results are four and half of evidence ranging from Covenants to descriptions from the Book of Mormon its self, to physical evidence, things Joseph Smith has said, and finally to ceremonial structures in the Heartland of America that if you have been endowed should remind of you a few things. Now while you can certainly get a lot from this episode by just listening, I strongly encourage you to head over to the Mormon Renegade Channel at Rumble so you can see all the pictures and slides. Brian worked in music ministry in his home parish. His priest was supportive of his participation in the parish and suggested that he attend seminary classes: “I love that approach that it was always just an invitation because, again, people recognize things in us that we sometimes don't see in ourselves at the time.” Fr. Brian had previously considered becoming a priest but “was so quick to talk myself out of it” at that time. (26:43) Fr. Brian took classes as a lay student at Sacred Heart Major Seminary: “And that was great 'cause it got me in the building, got me interacting with guys who would become brother seminarians and brother priests.” He encourages men to enter the seminary, which “is really the place where discernment has to happen.” Fr. Brian experienced peace and fraternity while in the seminary. He highlights how God uses the gifts of each priest to build up the Body of Christ. The priests discuss theatrical productions at Sacred Heart and other ways that seminarians can be creative or engage in hobbies. (41:45) Fr. Brian was ordained in 2015 and served his first assignment at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish. Next, he earned a degree in Scripture at the request of Archbishop Vigneron and now teaches at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. The priests discuss questions about the Book of Daniel and the subjects of Fr. Brian's two theses: the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah and the account of the plagues in Exodus. (53:52) Advice to a discerning man: Fr. Brian suggests reading the Scriptural account of the call of Samuel. He also recommends “to carve out time in your day for prayer, especially in front of the Blessed Sacrament,” as well as “to know that the relationship with God grows in silence.” Fr. Brian closes the episode in prayer.
This is an Accidental Gods bonus Episode recorded at the Marches Real Food and Farming Conference held at Linley Estate in Shropshire in September. Josiah Meldrum is co-founder and Director of Hodmedod's - which was set up specifically to enable local growers to farm regeneratively - and sell the produce they want to grow (and can grow in ways that help to regenerate the land), to people who want to buy their produce. This sounds obvious - but in our hyper-industrialised world, where industrial farming meets the industrial food industry (ultra-processed foods, we're looking at you), with their overt and covert advertising - it's radical. Truly, spectacularly radicle. This is localism in action. It's the deliberate enactment of the values and principles that need to expand far, far beyond the shores of Britain if we're to create the future we'd be proud to leave behind. In the understanding that this was actually recorded in a barn, please enjoy the conversation - and if you're interested in getting in touch locally to help with next year's event, please contact the Shropshire Good Food Partnership. Similarly, if people in other areas interested in sharing on bioregional food and farming futures work then the organiser, Jenny Roquett, is keen to setup a learning space on this.Hodmedod's https://hodmedods.co.uk/Josiah on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/josiahmeldrum/Hodmedod's on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/hodmedodsHodmedod's on Twitter: https://twitter.com/hodmedodsMarches Real Food and Farming Conference Marches Real Food and Farming Conference Shropshire Good Food Partnership Shropshire Good Food Partnership Stockholm Resilience Centre Report on Planetary Boundaries: https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/research-news/2023-09-13-all-planetary-boundaries-mapped-out-for-the-first-time-six-of-nine-crossed.html
