The Te Huia train service is hoping it can prove its critics wrong as its existence is extended for another year. The service, which connects Auckland and Hamilton will run at least until June next year, with NZTA picking up 60% of the bill. It's been criticised in the past for low passenger numbers and revenue. Waikato Regional Council Transport Committee Chair Angela Strange told Mike Hosking that in terms of farebox recovery, the service is actually doing really well when compared to other public transport in New Zealand. She says they're sitting at close to 16%, and it's closer per kilometre than the metro trains and ferries in Auckland. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of One Decision, we explore: What's Trump really after in Greenland How Trump's Greenland threats are fracturing NATO  Why the "Chinese threat" in Greenland is "exaggerated to the extreme" Would Denmark block a Greenland independence referendum to stop US annexation? Europe's defense spending surge  Why allies can no longer depend on America With trust between NATO allies at its lowest point in decades, Jarlov draws a hard red line: Denmark will not accept territorial demands from any country. He reveals how Trump's threats have backfired, bringing Denmark and Greenland closer together while pushing Europe away from relying on U.S. military defense. Had been excluded by Legislature for two years Nancy Montgomery, who represents Philipstown and part of Putnam Valley on the Putnam County Legislature, has been named as the chair of one of its committees for the first time since she was elected in 2019. Montgomery, the only Democrat on the nine-member Legislature, had been shut out of committee assignments for the past two years by the Republican chairs. In 2024 and 2025, she served only on the Budget and Finance Committee, which includes every member. This year, Dan Birmingham, who was elected chair on a 5-4 vote with Montgomery's support, assigned her to chair the Health, Social, Educational & Environmental Committee and appointed her to Protective Services. Over the years, Montgomery had repeatedly requested to be part of both committees based on her experience managing group homes for the developmentally disabled, volunteering for the Philipstown Ambulance Corps and dispatching 911 calls. Other than Budget and Finance, the Legislature's committees each have three members. They meet monthly and consider whether resolutions will be sent to the full Legislature. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve on both the Health and Protective Services committees," Montgomery said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan. 14). "These committees sit at the heart of how we protect public safety, support vulnerable residents and allocate resources responsibly, especially at a time when federal decisions are creating uncertainty for local governments and communities. "A key priority for me is strengthening policies and funding that support effective collaboration between law enforcement and social services, particularly around mental health and crisis response. I'm looking forward to doing the work, asking hard questions and helping ensure that Putnam County remains prepared, compassionate and fiscally responsible." In January 2024, Paul Jonke, then the new chair, excluded Montgomery for the first time. He claimed in a letter that her "inability to work collaboratively, and to act professionally and collegially," and the fact that she had "disturbed meetings" and violated the rules of order justified his decision. Whether you're aiming for progress over perfection or learning to say “no,” this episode is packed with relatable insights, inspiration, and encouragement to help you face stress head-on—and come out stronger. This is a topic that touches all of us: stress. As women, we juggle countless demands—from our careers and caregiving roles to the pressure to be everything to everyone. I know firsthand what it's like to navigate 60-hour work weeks during tax season, all while trying to keep everything else afloat. In this episode, I share some light-hearted moments, as well as practical strategies that have helped me manage the inevitable stress that comes my way.I'll talk about the importance of pinpointing your core stressors, setting healthy boundaries, and breaking big tasks into smaller, manageable pieces. I'll also look at how reframing negative self-talk and choosing progress over perfection can make a world of difference. More than anything, I want to encourage you—stress isn't something we can avoid, but it is something we can learn to navigate and even use as a catalyst for growth. Let's tackle stress together, so we can show up as our best selves for ourselves and those we care about. Here are my 3 key takeaways:Identify Your Core Stressors: Whether it's caregiving, perfectionism, or overcommitment, recognizing what triggers your stress is the first essential step to managing it effectively.Progress Over Perfection: Betty reminds us that striving for perfection often causes more harm than good; making progress—even if it isn't perfect—is what really matters.Set Boundaries & Prioritize: Audit your commitments, block time for yourself in permanent ink, and don't be afraid to graciously say "no." Protecting your priorities is critical for your well-being.Moments00:00 Managing Stress During CPA Peak Season04:53 Empowered by Modern Female Role Models07:40 Managing Difficult Client Encounters10:05 Efficient Email Management Strategies13:27 Regular Reflection and Reevaluation19:23 Perfectionism Causes Self-Induced Stress20:49 Perfect Yet Stressful Celebration25:20 Perfectionism's Costly Consequences28:45 Regularly Reflect and Adjust Commitments30:11 Challenge Assumptions, Seek Reality33:58 "Confronting Unavoidable Stress"Forward our podcast along to other Inspiring Women in your life. This is THE podcast that advances women toward economic, social, and political achievement. A referendum on increasing the parliamentary term to four years is looking highly likely. This is despite a Select Committee Report confirming ACT - who proposed the bill - will only support it if stronger checks and balances are built into the system. This includes more powers to the opposition in committees. But Justice Select Committee Chair Andrew Bayly says they're suggesting possible dates. "It's had almost unanimous agreement across the Committee that we should put it to referendum - the question is when." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Judith Collins calls for “civility” in Parliament after suspending three MPs and attacks on female MPs. Collins praised Act MP Brooke van Velden for standing up for herself after using the c-word. Te Pāti Māori co-leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi face 21-day suspensions without pay. Parliament Privileges Committee chair Judith Collins is calling for “civility” in the House after the decision to suspend three MPs without pay and attacks on female MPs. Collins said she was proud of Act MP Brooke van Velden for “standing up for herself” yesterday when she stirred major controversy by using the c-word in the House while attacking Labour for not condemning a column that used the word “c***” against female ministers. Yesterday, her committee's decision was handed down to three Te Pāti Māori MPs after last year's controversial haka. The committee recommended 21-day suspensions for co-leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi, saying they should be “severely censured”. Te Pāti Māori co-leaders Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer face a heavy censure. It also recommended a seven-day suspension for MP Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke. Collins told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking this morning the suspension also meant the MPs would go without pay during this time. She confirmed the suspension would be carried out consecutively. Collins said the committee had been “collegial” through the six-month-long process and only butted heads in the end when it came to handing down the penalties. “Even [the Green Party and the Labour Party] are differing from each other. “It's a very severe penalty compared to what has been awarded in the past, it's not only a suspension from the House, it's a suspension of salary. “But then, we haven't seen that level of behaviour before.” She said the committee's decision would be tabled today before it was voted for on Tuesday. She said she expected it to pass. On Brooke van Velden's use of the c-bomb in the House yesterday, Collins said she was proud of the Act MP for standing up for herself and the other women in the House being attacked. “I would say to Brooke, that I wouldn't have used the word myself but I did feel that she did stand up for herself and all the rest of us and I am waiting for someone of the left persuasion… one MP, just one, to come out and say it's not okay to attack someone just because you are not okay with what they do." She called reading the language in the column, which was written by Andrea Vance and published in the Sunday Star-Times, one of the “lowest points” in Parliament she has seen in her 23 years of service. “That and what happened on the 14th of November in Parliament. “It's just the sort of behaviour towards each other that is despicable.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My guest this week is someone whose career path may not be linear, but it's been anything but boring.  Jason Chebib started out in some of London's top ad agencies, including Ogilvy, Publicis, J. Walter Thompson, and BBDO, where he worked alongside CMOs and future CMOs at brands like Shell, Unilever, Dyson, Mars, and Ford. Then came a pivot—from creating campaigns to teaching the science behind them. Jason traveled the world, training the next generation of marketers in what actually works when it comes to growing brands. Eventually, he jumped back into the deep end—this time client-side at Diageo. First in Amsterdam, working on global strategy for Johnnie Walker, and then in New York as Head of Planning for Diageo North America, where he shaped the future of brands like Smirnoff, Baileys, Guinness, and Captain Morgan. Now fully rooted in the U.S., Jason has worn many hats—from advising agencies to serving as Committee Chair of Agency Relations at the ANA and Co-Chair of the Marketing Society in New York. He brings the kind of perspective that only comes from being deep in the trenches: agency, client, strategy, research, and education. And while he's not one to chase titles, let's just say his next chapter is wide open—and any brand would be lucky to have him. I am proud to call him my friend, my confidant, my mentor: Jason Chebib.

In this interview we recorded at COP29, Professor Hugh Hunt speaks with UK Climate Change Committee Chair, Piers Forster. [Order 'COPOUT - How governments have failed the people on climate' by Nick Breeze] Piers clearly asserts that Carbon Capture and Storage technologies (CCS), that are forecast to remove emissions from so-called hard-to-abate sectors like aviation and steel, will not be enough to offset the damage causing carbon pollution. Whether CCS is viable at any meaningful scale remains highly uncertain. At a time when global heating is accelerating and the destructive impacts, such as fires and floods, are making much of the planet uninsurable, phasing out fossil fuels and reducing carbon pollution has never been a more serious issue. Forster also responds to questions related to Al Gore calling CCS a fraud and whether the UK is anywhere near prepared for the more extreme climate impacts that are coming towards us.  The UK must take phasing out fossil fuels and protecting nature seriously, to send a signal that we are truly out of the extractive and destructive 20th century mindset that has become an existential threat. Thanks for listening. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in UK Decarbonisation Piers Forster confirmed that CCS plays a role in the UK's net-zero strategy, particularly for difficult-to-decarbonise industries and sectors like aviation, which faces major challenges in reducing emissions. He emphasised that "you can't get there all the way with carbon capture and storage," making it clear that reducing emissions must remain the priority. The UK government has earmarked £22 billion for CCS over 25 years, mainly to support two industrial clusters, ensuring a "just transition" without shutting down key industries like Port Talbot and Grangemouth. Response to Al Gore's Accusation that CCS “… is a fraud!” When asked about Al Gore calling CCS a "fraud," Forster acknowledged concerns, stating, "it depends on the context." He explained that CCS should not be used to justify fossil fuel expansion but should be reserved for sectors with no viable alternatives. "As soon as you say you want to use it for generating electricity, that's not a good use of it at all," he said, advocating for renewables like wind and solar instead. UK Preparedness for Extreme Weather Forster was clear about the UK's lack of readiness: "We are absolutely not prepared. We should be. We are encouraging the government to really think about climate resilience, just as it thinks about reducing its emissions.” He stressed the need for urgent action to protect infrastructure, homes, and lives from increasing climate risks.
