"Sometimes I feel dead," I told her, "and I hate everybody." Let's get lethargic, and philosophical, with MY YEAR OF REST AND RELAXATION (2018) by Otessa Moshfegh. A rare pick from the world of literary fiction, this book feels like eating alone in a dingy restaurant at 3am. It's not horror, but you may be unnerved in a different way. (Stick around for some Gatsby rambling near the end!) No spoilers in this one! It's part two of the 'toxic' women deep dive! This week we're discussing the backlash against the 'evil' women genre and how the TikTok girlies are catapulting our obsession with these characters into a new era. From being in your 'fleabag era' and basing your whole life on the protagonist of My Year Of Rest And Relaxation, to femcels and the emerging trend of 'dissociative feminism'. We're exploring why so many people view these characters as apathetic but aspirational, and what it all says about our current cultural moment.Have an opinion and want to be featured on an upcoming episode? Marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Stefanie and her guest, Americanist Marius Henderson, discuss contemporary literature and the concept of American art after 9/11, touching on the affective turn, the New Sincerity, the Occupy Movement, and the aesthetics of sleep in the novel "My Year of Rest and Relaxation" (2018) by US novelist Ottessa Moshfegh.
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green MY YEAR OF REST AND RELAXATION by Ottessa Moshfegh This week, we dig deep into two recent bestsellers: THE FAULT IN OUR STARS and MY YEAR OF REST AND RELAXATION! We discuss teen romance, the allure of sleep, and famous events in Dutch history. (Spoiler alert, Toby hasn’t heard of Mata Hari and thinks it’s weird if you have.) Plus, Dillon fills us in on his progress with HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS.
Book (Wine) Club: Reading Between the Wines with Lauren Popish
On today’s episode, Ryan, Julia, and I will be discussing what happens during the early 2000's when one 25 year old woman living on the Upper East Side decides to sleep a year away with the help of pharmaceuticals in My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh. It has pills, 90’s film trivia, and more blackouts than me at ASU. We’ll be paring our read with a glass or three of Arvay Tokaji Harslevelu 2015 from Tokaj, Hungary. It was selected because wine is the drink of the common person in Hungary, which is what our main character was trying to achieve by cutting off the world for a year. You can read my extended review on Goodreads here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2614256794We rated the book as follows:Ryan - 3 (out of 3)Julia - 1.11 (out of 3)Lauren - 2.1 (out of 3)Our guests can reached here:Ryan - @specialrobotdog , http://www.ryanconsbruck.com/ Julia - @juliapopishLauren - @laurenpopish

We caught up with Ottessa to talk about My Year Of Rest And Relaxation, her latest novel about a young woman on a quest to hibernate. The protagonist of Ottessa Moshfegh's new novel, MY YEAR OF REST AND RELAXATION, doesn't just take some time off from her job; she spends a year hibernating with strong sedatives, in the hope that she'll emerge transformed. The novel is a nervy modern-day rebellion tale that isn't afraid to get dark or find humor in the darkness and we ask Moshfegh about writing it. Megan and Clay recommend some overlooked summer reading picks and our editors talk about their favorite reads this week.
