Set in a dystopian version of Cape Town, now an independent and heavily surveilled Cape Republic, the novel imagines a society where public executions coincide with the Noon Gun and only the qualified may vote Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. Send us a textToday we're discussing the highly anticipated brand new book in the Hunger Games world: Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins. We go back in time (yet again!) to the 50th Quarter Quell, also known as Haymitch Abernathy's Hunger Games to answer all the questions we still have. How exactly did he become a victor and the gruff but lovable mentor we all grew to love in the original trilogy? What happened to Haymitch?!This book is full of so many amazing “easter eggs” and tie-ins to the original trilogy. It fills in SO many satisfying blanks while still leaving a little bit up to interpretation. We're ready to pick this book apart and make all of those connections with you as we celebrate this amazing book and get ready to close this Hunger Games chapter (for now). If you've been following along and watched our “From 1984 to Hunger Games” dystopian themes in media and literature episode then you know we're fascinated with everything about this genre and need to delve into this discussion! It just happens to be a BIG bonus that Ashley had never read it before. The debate currently on the book talk table is whether or not books (and the act of reading) are inherently political. We'd encourage anyone who has a doubt in their mind to read this series… with themes like media control, a totalitarian regime, and rebellion, it's hard to see how it ISN'T political.Episode 5 covers book 5 (or 0.75?): Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star reviews. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences (yes, with a keyboard…), discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, and discuss ALL the easter eggs. Then we wrap this up with some surprise questions and some excitement for next week's final Hunger Games episode because we give our wrap up thoughts, our overall reviews, discuss the movies, and announce our next miniseries starting soon! We can't wait to see you there!  Mentioned Source:“We Already Know How Sunrise on the Reaping Ends. Stephen Jay Schwartz joins Marco to discuss the art of crafting stories that resonate across mediums.Show Notes:Storytelling is more than words on a page—it's rhythm, structure, and emotion. In this episode of Audio Signals, Marco Ciappelli welcomes back Stephen Jay Schwartz, a novelist, screenwriter, and former director of development in Hollywood. Their conversation explores the differences between writing novels and screenplays, the challenge of adapting stories across mediums, and the musicality of language in writing. What happens when a book becomes a movie? Many argue the book is always better, but is that really the case? Schwartz, having worked closely with directors and screenwriters, explains how the transition from text to film is often a process of distillation—finding the essence of a story and reshaping it to fit a new format. He shares insights from his experience in Hollywood, where screenplays often change hands and visions evolve. Does this creative transformation enhance the original work, or does it strip away its soul? The discussion then shifts to a more fundamental aspect of storytelling: rhythm. Drawing from his musical background, Schwartz describes how writing, much like composing music, involves an inherent cadence. Sentences have beats, paragraphs flow with momentum, and dialogue needs a natural tempo. Whether consciously or not, every good writer crafts their prose with a certain musicality that enhances readability and engagement.Marco and Stephen also touch on the way different minds visualize stories. Not everyone ‘sees' scenes play out in their head while reading—some need visual prompts, while others experience narrative through an auditory lens. How does this affect the way we consume stories? With attention spans shrinking, are we losing the patience for immersive storytelling in books, gravitating instead toward visually driven media? Before wrapping up, they pose a philosophical question: When is a story truly finished? Da Vinci reportedly never considered the Mona Lisa complete, and writers often feel similarly about their work. Does a story ever really end, or does it just reach a stopping point? For anyone fascinated by the intersection of storytelling, film, and music, this episode offers thought-provoking insights. Tune in for a conversation that challenges assumptions about creative processes and the evolving landscape of narrative arts._____________________________ResourcesBio, books, and more: https://www.stephenjayschwartz.com/_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signalsWatch the video version on-demand on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllQvnJ8eHUlVX8AuyhehtexAAre you interested in advertising your brand on ITSPmagazine?

Academics from everywhere experiment, collaborate, and even interpret our stories of "This one time at Burning Man."In this episode, Stuart talks with people from Burning Nerds, an annual gathering of academics in Black Rock City. They keep it light, though; not too many unnecessarily fancy words. Dr Jukka-Pekka Heikkilä shares about the Open Strategy management technique used by Burning Man Project that gives more power to the people. Bryan Yazell and Patricia Wolf of University of Southern Denmark report on using Flash Fiction in BRC to develop a new subgenre of sci-fi called climate fiction (‘cli-fi'), stories that are less dystopian, even less utopian, more protopian (fancy word) about society that improves over time, rather than transcending all it's problems or descending into dysfunction.Professor Matt Zook of University of Kentucky extols the unique aspects of Black Rock City, from materiality to temporality, to being a place apart. He and Stuart explore the interplay between digital and physical spaces, and what about community actually makes it good. Then Jukka-Pekka Heikkilä returns to reveal how the Burning Stories project, now in its 6th year of tracking tales, is now a cultural repository, and is training a gifted AI on how Burners be Burning.jukkapekka.comsdu.dk/en/persons/yazellsdu.dk/en/persons/pawogeography.as.uky.edu/users/zookburningman.org/programs/philosophical-center/academicsregionals.burningman.org/european-leadership-summitburning-stories.comkk.org/thetechnium/protopiasdu.dk/en/paca-at-burning-man-festival-2024 LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG

A devastating earthquake strikes part of the United States where one should never, throwing sisters Quinn and Riley into a desperate struggle to merely get home. But Point A to B is hardly a straight line, as the sisters must overcome their own differences and mistakes. Along with those they meet along the way, the sisters make their way to a hopeful safety in "Darkness Falls," the first of the Nature's Fury Series. A.E. Faulkner brings the reader a dystopian world that appeals to more than the young adult audience. Her interest in the dark, and the creation of strong yet flawed characters makes its way through all five volumes of the series. Her writing brings out the concern of the repercussions we will face when nature no longer tolerates human destruction. A Pennsylvania native, Faulkner embeds us in a familiar atmosphere. A lover of the outdoors, Faulkner can be found hiking, biking and exploring nature with her husband and two sons. She lives in Harrisburg.

Our Patron Julius the Nice Dragon requested today's book saying, “I want to nominate...“First Impressions” by SJ Saunders…It's the first of three installments in a rather short trilogy I found floating on audible, but it never found an audience. Several years later it has about five total reviews online! So I think the question [for] this book is - Why did it flop the YA “dystopia” space? Is it too mediocre? Just got bad and irrelevant? Good but undiscovered?" We return to The Dunks! This book is all about cyborgs and supersoldier cloned teens in future Boston. Naturally, we discuss the MBTA for too long because we discover that even in an imagined highly advanced technological society, it still doesn't work. In fact, there is so much Boston-talk in this episode that it may be dangerous to listeners outside of New England. Please be advised.
