In this episode, we tackle the challenging but vital question: How can we support nervous system regulation when someone isn't in a safe environment? Drawing from Deb Dana's Polyvagal Theory expertise and current research, we explore practical strategies for both practitioners and individuals navigating unsafe circumstances. In this episode you'll learn:How to identify small touch points that can activate brief ventral vagal statesSpecific techniques practitioners & individuals can use to support clients/themselves in unsafe environmentsMicro-practices for self-regulation during ongoing stress or threatThree Takeaways:Even in unsafe environments, small "safety or regulating anchors" (objects, memories, connections) can provide crucial moments of regulation. The goal isn't permanent regulation in unsafe circumstances, but creating brief reminders that another state exists.Oftentimes the first step in healing is acknowledging the reality of one's situation, not minimizing or denying it. Whether you're a practitioner or the individual going through it, remember that your struggle makes sense, your survival responses make sense.Recognizing and savoring these micro-moments of "safe enough" builds neural pathways that support resilience over time.Resources/Citations:National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233"Polyvagal Exercises for Safety and Connection" by Deb Dana"Anchored: How to Befriend Your Nervous System Using Polyvagal Theory" by Deb DanaLevine, P. THIS IS A REPLAY OF 2024 - WEEK 23 All the links: LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISONThis is a podcast about knowing yourself and having sustainable practices.Developing and sustaining a daily meditation practice for over 25 years helped me gain a deeper level of self-awareness. I have learned that the more I practice the more I gain a level of self-mastery with what I am practicing. Being self-aware and having personal insight allows me to recognize when I need to focus on a specific tool or technique, MORE.I remember when I was at dinner with a few former colleagues in 2017 and an active shooter entered the restaurant. We were ending dinner when we heard the words, “Everybody down.” I was with three much younger ladies reminding them to breathe and affirming that we would be okay. Was I concerned as we were underneath the table waiting for more news? Of course. I also had a strong sense that we would all be fine.As the scene dispersed and the police arrived we found out that the person who instructed us to get down was a retired police officer. Time passed and the shooter was apprehended and we all left to return safely to our homes. One of the definitions of trauma is a “deeply disturbing or distressing experience.” Yep, I would say it was a traumatic experience. When I arrived home I checked in with TD and I immediately went to my living room and lay flat on my back on the floor. I found a sound vibration recording on YouTube that focused on healing, safety and feeling grounded. I listened to the recording and felt my body begin to release some of that energy and relax. The next day as I told my brother about what happened he reminded me to rest. After our conversation I felt my body physically releasing some of the stress and I had a very long nap. I also felt achy later that day. I knew I needed help processing what happened so I called the Employee Assistance Program and I was able to schedule counseling. I also called the ladies to suggest they reach out for support via their Employee Assistance Program as well. This quote from Bessel A. van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, reminds me to be truthful with myself.“The greatest sources of our suffering are the lies we tell ourselves.”My nervous system was impacted by that experience. I learned a lot in the therapy sessions about processing trauma and how the book title states, “the body keeps score.” We feel trauma in our bodies and it helps to have ways to release what the body is holding on to. I have different practices I use to keep grounded, stay centered and to release energy that is stuck in my body. Practice is the opportunity to fine tune our skills so when we are called to use them, we can use them effectively. Here are a few practices I do regularly to reduce stress on my nervous system.Emotional freedom technique (EFT) also known as tapping- specifically for trauma or an experience. I found Regulate Your Nervous System After Trauma by Julie Schiffman. Here is a link.Schedule a counseling session,Sound vibration meditations to shift the energy in my body - Jhene Aiko's Trigger Protection Mantra is a staple for me to have playing in the background. It's very soothing and she has several available for different lengths.Life has unexpected detours ALL the time. In addition to breathing practices, meditation, laughter, and approaching experiences with curiosity helps me practice less judgment of myself and others. What are some of the ways you navigate life's unpredictable journey? Psalm 103:2-6 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. Peter Hitchens hates to be blunt about these things, well, not really, but he'd really like to know why the police are so useless. And not in one specific instance or area, but generally. No coppers on the beat, rarely answering emergency calls and heaven forfend they actually bang someone up. What happened to policing in the UK? While Sarah has spent her week at a wellness centre (don't call it a fat farm), and while she has returned glowing like a rare gem, she did manage to put some weight on. But did a week of wheatgrass colonics, waddling about and living on liquids take her to some higher spiritual ground? In the wake of updates to Child Safety Standards emerging from Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, Mirriam Francis wrote to Victoria's Commission for Children and Young People outlining the ways in which she sees Scientology teachings and practices to be violating these standards. While concepts of religious freedom and choice can muddy the waters of certain discussions around coercive organisations, Mirriam sees the regulations and laws to protect children as a key lens through which such practices need to be viewed and pursued. Joel spoke with repeat guest Nijay Gupta and first-time guest Melissa Barciela Mandala about Paul's notion of "love." They discuss the impulse to find a "theological center" to Paul's New Testament writings, the success of Nijay's attempt to locate the love of God as this "center," and of course, what we are all currently reading and enjoying.Nijay K. Gupta is Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. He is co-editor of the Dictionary of Paul and His Letters (2nd ed.), The State of New Testament Studies, The State of Pauline Studies, and serves as a senior translator for the New Living Translation. Barciela Mandala is Assistant Professor of New Testament at Palm Beach Atlantic University and works primarily in Pauline studies. A revised version of her doctoral dissertation entitled The Suffering Body as a Site of Virtue Formation in Philippians is forthcoming with Mohr Siebeck. Her research focused on the apostle Paul's view of the body and suffering within his ancient philosophical context. The subjects of current and past work include various approaches to Paul's Letter to the Romans, virtue ethics in relation to Paul, and explorations of comparative methodology in biblical studies more broadly. Episode 152 centers on a lively conversation between Kevin and Dr. Kate Oland Galligan as they trace her path from a curious undergrad to a passionate fascia educator and clinician. The duo challenges old perceptions of fascia, recounting stories from early lab experiences where fascia was simply “ripped out,” and contrasting them with new insights on its dynamic, interconnected nature. They reveal how subtle fascial restrictions can cause significant clinical symptoms—linking pelvic imbalances to jaw pain—and explore the emerging field of mind-body connections in fascial therapy. 0:00:00 | Introduction 0:00:55 | Introducing Kate Introducing Fascia 0:17:06 | Fascia Mini Lesson * 0:20:00 | Rip That Fascia Out! 0:37:14 | Get Ready for Annual Debriefing 0:39:00 | The Hip Bone is Connected to the Jaw Bone 1:03:08 | We're on Substack! * 1:06:13 | Mind-Body Connections 1:21:45 | Staying Connected * Breaks ★ If you cannot see or activate the audio player, go to: theAPprofessor.org/podcast-episode-152.html

Today, I am speaking with Yaz Porritt of Yorkshire Pooches Therapies. Yaz is a Canine Massage Therapist and Applied Herbal Choices Consultant who specialises in a whole-dog and whole-person approach to canine pain management and support. Pain is a complex topic, and we definitely dive deep. This is a really special conversation where we talk about pain from a variety of perspectives, including more of the energetic and mystical aspects of how and why the body stores trauma, in addition to the more “practical” aspects of pain. As Yaz says, we have to look at pain as having both physical and emotional experiences of pain, and we have to recognise that the body keeps the score well after a painful incident has occurred. This is where complementary support like zoopharmacognosy or Reiki, and other healing modalities can be really helpful. Yaz shares: * Her Four Pillars of Pain and how you can use these to better understand what is going on with your dog * Holistic approaches to pain management * Supporting joint health and pain through nutrition Yaz also talks about how a behaviour like resource guarding might actually have a pain problem at its root, and how changes in your dog's fur direction can be a subtle sign that your dog is in pain. She also gives a rundown on what to do about the top 3 joint issues you guys share with me: * hip dysplasia * osteoarthritis * luxating patellas And we cover some of the most common supplements and pharmaceutical options you may come across, to help you make more informed decisions. As you can see, this is a chock full episode that I know you are going to love! If you enjoy a whole-dog, whole-person approach to your dog's health with a spiritual touch like we talk about today, come join Stacey Renphrey of Hozho Hounds and me in our brand new F.E.T.C.H. community where we'll share with you the very same framework we use in our canine nutrition practices to help get to the root of health challenges and get your dog on the pathway to optimal health. Imagine having a deep and difficult conversation with your loved ones which enables acceptance and forgiveness while freeing you all from shame, sadness, and dysfunction. Imagine what it would feel like to be the chain-breaker in your family. But what if you don't want to have that conversation? Or it isn't possible due to bereavement, estrangement, or adoption (or any other reason for that matter)? Family Constellation Therapy makes it possible to do the work regardless of the many reasons you might not want, or be able to broach difficult issues with your family. You don't even have to KNOW who your family is. In today's episode, I speak to Family Constellations Facilitator, Sound Therapist, Yoga and Pilates teacher, and talented singer/songwriter, Karis Bunney, who has been constellating me for the past 18-24 months. Constellating your family system can not only reveal the root cause of some of the issues and beliefs that burden you, but allow you to forgive and heal generational wounds, so you are liberated from the “disturbances” of the past, enabling yourself and future generations to continue on a pathway of growth. During this episode, Karis explains what happens during a Family Constellation session, how it works, how it can free you, and theorises on the magic that makes it all happen. We also candidly share our personal experiences and invite you to think about how this transformational, transgenerational therapy could benefit you and your future generations. Ask yourself: Have you been caught in a feedback loop, repeating past patterns with no idea WHY it is so deeply ingrained in your subconscious? Do you recognise unhealthy behaviours/ideas/beliefs you want to change but don't know where they are rooted? Are you conscious of repeating family patterns and desperate not to make the same mistakes your parents/relatives did? If you answered yes to any of the above, this episode is for you. Host Jake Deptula and former associate family court judge and family law attorney Michele Locke sit down with Lena, an abusive marriage survivor from episode nine of lovelustfear, “He's Your Problem Now.” They discuss Lena's toxic marriage and the influence of cultural obligations in her Armenian community, the nuances of recognizing abuse, and how she found her voice and empowerment through her second husband's supportive and matrilineal Native American culture. The conversation also highlights the themes of coercive control, gaslighting, financial manipulation, and the emotional toll these experiences have on physical health, including the long-term effects of trauma. Also, they discuss the importance of support systems and reflect on the necessity of self-care in the healing process. topics | cultural obligations, empowerment, trauma recovery, self-care, mental health, women's rights, love, relationships, trauma, abuse, relationships, cultural expectations, toxic traits, vulnerability, healing, hashimoto's disease, independence, personal growth, podcasting, toxic relationships Lena - Episode Link "He's Your Problem Now" https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/lovelustfear-lena-hes-your-problem-now/id1735876283?i=1000657913302 https://open.spotify.com/episode/3VuTd9CszCR6CyVMNmddRW?si=zHN5QTHhRXGe-VK61UY9jg links Michele Locke https://www.michelelocke.com/ https://www.instagram.com/attorneymichelelocke/ The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk M.D. (Author) (Book Recommended By Michele) https://www.amazon.com/Body-Keeps-Score-Healing-Trauma/dp/0143127748 More About Hashimoto's Disease https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hashimotos-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20351855 Music Playing During Lena's Freedom Ride, aka “The Grapevine” Siouxsie and the Banshees (Spotify Playlist) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DZ06evO0KJgF1?si=k68HOnZbQVSZRBxD9OSVuQ National Domestic Violence Hotline (24/7/365) Call 1.800.799.SAFE (7233) Text: START to 88788 https://www.thehotline.org/ https://www.facebook.com/NationalDomesticViolenceHotline https://www.instagram.com/NDVHofficial/ guest + story | submission information If you have a dating or relationship story to share, want to participate in a discussion here on lovelustfridays, or have a topic you'd like us to cover, contact us below. Video: 7 Minute Body Scan from The Mindful Christian Romans 12:3-8 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
This is the second episode of a two part series where I'm sharing the top 13 self-leadership books that have changed my life and the trajectory of my business. If you haven't already, go back and listen to last week's episode! It's linked below. Now, I talk about this a lot, but as coaches who are truly committed to our own craft, we can only go and grow with clients to the degree that we are willing to evolve with ourselves first. I understand that if I haven't had an insight or a breakthrough in my own personal journey in a specific area, then I will never see or be able to reflect that same gap in a client. In this episode, I'm sharing some of the top books that have helped me unlock new insights, deeper learnings and levels of self awareness and spiritual development in the realm of relationships, overcoming resistance, and money mindset. Again, if you pick up one of these books, I'd love to hear from you! I truly believe that these books have the possibility to change your life, and I hope you enjoy them. Who are we outside of white supremacy culture? Perhaps the simple answer is healers, holders, stewards. Perhaps the simple answer is the people that refuse, repair and restore. And perhaps we don't have to go anywhere to learn these skills, perhaps the best teachers and stories are already embedded in our intuition and ancestry. Perhaps the stories they're whispering invite us into a culture with more bearable and breathe-able characteristics where perfectionism becomes improvisation, individualism becomes collectivism and “right to comfort” becomes “right to transformation”. Jill is so thrilled to welcome the wonderful Ali Olivier to the show this week! Ali is an empowerment and embodiment coach helping you overcome people pleasing, perfectionism and self doubt so you can reclaim your deepest confidence and create a life you love. I am on my head, and emotions scare me to death. I have big ones because I'm also an empath. I learned from a counselor that my emotions are like a screen door. Allow the wind to blow through, and don't try to close the door; just let it blow through. If you don't, the door will come off its hinges, and you will have problems. I see my emotions as waves. Sometimes, the waves are big, but the easiest way to survive a big wave is to stand there and let it hit you and then come back up. Thoughts On Breathing Box breathing is very helpful. I also get heart palpitations. One of the first YouTube videos I put out there is about how to manage the anxiety that I've had for years. I often lie down and breathe. Box breathing is helpful, but I can also hyperventilate easily. So I lay down, breathe straight from my belly, think about it, and count my numbers. It is amazing how quickly that calms my nervous system. Bullying Story I was the chubby kid. I grew up overseas, and my parents were missionaries. So, I went to an international School in Seoul, Korea. In the 1970s, obesity was not what it is now. We didn't understand it or have as much of it. Being the chubby kid, I was always picked on. I was not bullied the way we see it happen in severe cases. A kid came behind me in 5th grade and stomped his feet as if I was shaking the ground as I walked. He was much smaller than me, so I turned around and leveled him. In a situation like that, it would have been nice to have had some mindfulness and to be able to say this is his issue, not mine. But at 10 years old, you don't have that. Today, we're delving into a topic that's both profound and hopeful: the harm of childhood trauma and the incredible power of resilience. Joining me on the show is Dr. Marc D. Hauser, who's here to unravel these complex topics in a way that's accessible and empowering for all parents. Through his groundbreaking work, including his new book Vulnerable Minds: The Harms of Childhood Trauma and the Hope of Resiliency, which is what we're diving into today, Marc brings scientific evidence about childhood trauma to a broader audience and sheds light on the pathways to healing and growth. In this conversation, we explore what constitutes a traumatic experience and why neurodivergent children may be more vulnerable to their effects, as well as ACES, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, often misunderstood but profoundly influential in shaping a child's journey. Marc helps us understand their significance in the context of resilience. About Marc Hauser Marc Hauser is a scientist, educator, author, consultant and public speaker. Hauser's scientific research, including over 300 published papers and seven books, has focused on how the brain evolves, develops, and is altered by damage and neurodevelopmental disorders, with an emphasis on the processes of learning and decision-making, as well as the impact of traumatic experiences on development. Hauser's educational and consulting work has focused on the implementation of quantitative, brain-based methods for teachers, clinicians, and doctors working with children who have different disabilities, including especially those that result from a history of traumatic experiences. Hauser earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Bucknell University, a PhD from UCLA and Post-doctoral fellowships from the University of Michigan, Rockefeller University, and University of California-Davis. From 1992-2011, he was a Professor at Harvard University. In 2013, he founded the company Risk-Eraser, dedicated to providing software and consulting to programs focusing on students in special education. His most recent book Vulnerable Minds, published in March 2024 by Avery-Penguin-Random House Publishing, New York. Things you'll learn from this episode How Vulnerable Minds makes scientific evidence about childhood trauma accessible to a broader audience How traumatic experiences are defined The impact of trauma on neurodivergent children as well as ways in which these kids are more vulnerable to trauma What it means for a school to be trauma-informed in action What ACES are and how their assignment and meaning is frequently misinterpreted and misunderstood The role of nature and nurture when it comes to whether other not an experience results in trauma or is met with resiliency Resources mentioned for the Harm of Childhood Trauma and the Hope of Resiliency Dr. Marc D.
