For years, I believed mindset work alone could break through any barrier. But recently, I had a powerful realization—some of the deepest wounds aren't just in our thoughts; they're stored in our bodies. In this episode, I share a personal experience that opened my eyes to the weight I had unknowingly been carrying for decades.Through breathwork, I uncovered an old emotional story that had been lingering in my body, creating tension and pain I hadn't even connected to my past. It was a moment of clarity—one that showed me healing isn't just about shifting our thoughts; it's about releasing what's been trapped within us.If you've ever felt stuck despite doing all the inner work, this episode is for you. We'll dive into:Somatic healing and how the body stores unprocessed emotionsThe mind-body connection and why mental shifts alone aren't always enoughHow unresolved trauma manifests as anxiety, overwhelm, or even physical discomfortPractical tools like breathwork, nervous system regulation, and emotional release techniques to facilitate deep, lasting transformation–Connect with Deanna:Instagram: @deannaherrinLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deanna-herrin/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedeannaherrinWebsite: http://www.deannaherrin.net

"Reality is a story. It's an evolving story, and it's a love story. It's a story of allurement, where all the pieces are looking in this evolutionary ladder. It's looking for ever greater wholeness and intimacy with itself. It's God putting itself back together." - Ben Stewart

Kate Flynn, Millennial, is The Crisis Coach with a PhD in Developmental Psychology. After navigating her own life-altering crisis, Kate combined her academic expertise, entrepreneurial success, and personal resilience to create a unique coaching practice. She specializes in helping high-achieving leaders turn their most challenging moments into opportunities for growth and transformation. Topics Covered:     Post Traumatic Growth        Defining Crisis and Trauma·         The Body Keeps the Score    Trauma statistics & symptoms        EMDR benefits     IFS (Internal Family System)      Healing & different options   3 Episode Takeaways 1. Post Traumatic Growth is an individual's ability to grow and transform following major struggles but continue to grow and transform – “what doesn't kill you can make you stronger” with a properly set table. Resilience is one's ability to bounce back to baseline after something challenging happens. 2. Crisis is the external experience and there are two types: with a “C” easily identifiable and requires immediate action, and those with a “c” that are slow burning, less identifiable, and can sometimes trigger bigger feelings. Trauma is our internal experience and lives in our bodies - they can cause crisis situations or over-react to situations. Crisis and trauma can be intertwined. 3. Based on the statistics from the book The Body Keeps The Score there are many of us walking around with unresolved trauma and may not know it. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is one powerful way to “unearth” what's going on in our bodies to help identify the triggers to unearth traumas to work through the experiences to get closure. Pursuing physical health seems to have great benefits. Longer life, more enjoyment of life, compliments from friends who notice . . . But, what if the best way to become more physically healthy is to first become more spiritually, mentally, and emotionally healthy? In fact, what if a lack of spiritual, mental, or emotional health is actually keeping your body stuck in diseases or distress because you've tried to fix the problem from the outside in, instead of from the inside out? On today's podcast episode, Heather Creekmore talks about the importance of caring for our souls: our emotions, our mental health, and our spiritual health. She talks about research that shows how a failure to take care of what's going on inside may keep us fighting our bodies. As Christian women, what should take priority? Heather explores these questions and more in today's new episode. Listen, learn, and be encouraged to get healthy emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically in 2025. It's pretty long, and it has a lot of triggering examples of real-life trauma. But it's a great book for understanding how trauma affects the brain and body and that's probably why it's been on the NYT bestseller list for like 5 years! And also that's probably because trauma affects all of us, and Psychiatrist Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk has written the modern user's guide to understanding it. There's so much to talk about with Trauma and PTSD and the book is over 350 pages long, so I'm going to summarize the essentials without the triggering bits.  Looking for affordable online counseling? Chuck was in his first pastorate, crushing it, seeing lives restored. Then he had a disagreement with the senior pastor and was fired. He was livid, wanted justice, andstuffed all the painful emotions. Eventually he ended up in a hospital, terribly ill because “the body does keep score.” Chuck DeGroat is the Pastor of Pastoral Care and Christian Spirituality at Western Theological Seminary, Holland, MI. We have a powerful conversation about his latest book, Healing What’s Within: Coming Home to Yourself, and to God, When You’re Wounded, Weary, and Wandering. Also in this healing conversation, when Chuck was younger and read the 3 questions God asked Adam and Eve after they fell, “Where are you? Who told you were naked? And did you eat of the tree?" Chuck took those questions as coming from an angry God. Now he understands these are questions God asks us to invite us back home into his perfect love. (CW: descriptions of drug use, addiction, and crime)Claude Robinson is the manager of Rainbow Lodge, a home in inner Sydney for men just out of prison. Claude knows the place well because nearly 20 years ago he was sent there himself.Claude was a heroin addict who had taken to crime to pay for his habit and wound up in a minimum security jail. But after he assaulted a prison guard, he ended up in one of Australia's toughest jails - Goulburn Correctional Centre. While Claude was inside, his father died, and he found out that he had inherited $60,000.It was a chance to start a new life when he got out of prison. In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, we delve into the powerful concept of stress loops and the long-term impact unresolved stress can have on your body and mind. Research shows that one stressful event can trigger the production of stress hormones in your body for up to six hours afterward—and many of us experience far more than just one stressful event in a day. In today's society, we are taught to suppress our emotions and hold it all together, but doing so creates what we call ""emotional constipation."" In this episode, we discuss the dangers of not completing the stress cycle and offer practical ways to process your stress in a healthy way. Understanding the Stress Loop: When we experience stress, our body is wired to feel it to completion. But in today's world, where any emotion outside of ""neutral"" or ""happy"" is often deemed inappropriate, we bury our stress and move on without resolving it. We'll explain what a stress loop is and why it's essential to close it for your overall health. The Consequences of Unresolved Stress: From emotional to physical constipation, we'll explore how bottling up stress can lead to both mental and physical health issues. The longer the stress remains unresolved, the more it impacts your body, potentially leading to burnout, chronic fatigue, and even illness. How Stress Manifests in the Body (Amazon Affiliate): We'll discuss how unresolved stress can leave your body stuck in a constant state of fight or flight. When the stress loop isn't closed, your body continues to pump out stress hormones, leading to long-term anxiety, tension, and even digestive problems. Why Animals Close the Loop and Humans Don't: In the wild, animals instinctively shake after escaping a predator, which helps them complete the stress loop. Humans, however, often suppress these instincts due to societal pressures. We'll explore why this is harmful and how we can learn from nature's stress management techniques. Five Practical Ways to Close the Stress Loop: Movement: Physical movement is one of the most effective ways to process stress. Whether it's a workout, yoga, or simply shaking out your body, moving helps release pent-up tension. Deep Breathing: Controlled breathing techniques can help signal to your nervous system that it's safe to relax, allowing you to complete the stress response. Express Your Emotions: Don't be afraid to scream into a pillow, cry, or vent to someone you trust. Allowing yourself to feel the emotion fully is crucial to processing it. Mindfulness Practices: Meditation, visualization, or progressive muscle relaxation can help calm your nervous system and complete the stress loop. Creative Expression: Sometimes writing, drawing, or engaging in a hobby can help you express and release emotions that are stuck, allowing you to resolve stress in a healthy way. Join us as we explore how unresolved stress affects your body and mind, and provide you with actionable strategies to help you close your stress loops. Whether you're dealing with the daily demands of life as a first responder or simply trying to manage everyday stress, this episode is packed with valuable insights to help you find relief and balance. Drawing on The Body Keeps the Score, we argue that trauma-informed approaches can reflect the politics of whiteness, encouraging children to pathologize their parents rather than seeing them as victims of racialized oppression. We also examine troubling elements in trauma solutions, such as partnerships with police and reactionary martial arts training, and how childhood trauma assessments have been used to justify predictive policing against Black youth.Ultimately, we reveal how the ACEs framework risks pathologizing Black communities under the guise of liberatory politics, echoing stereotypes from the Progressive Eugenics Movement. We conclude by emphasizing the importance of revolutionary body movements, like Capoeira Angola, and social movements in fostering the collective agency needed to move beyond trauma-informed politics.Support the showIn Search of Black Power is a Black-owned internet show and podcast. Send us a textBessel van der Kolk's The Body Keeps the Score has become a global sensation, shaping mental health services and public conversations by centering trauma. Originally aimed at improving doctor-patient relationships, trauma-informed analysis has evolved into a political tool, with some advocating for its use in resource allocation to historically oppressed communities. But can focusing on a community's trauma truly empower them? Many grassroots Black practitioners are now questioning the emphasis on trauma in discussions about serving the Black community. In this multipart series, Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle's Director of Research, Lawrence Grandpre, introduces van der Kolk's ideas, contrasting his view of trauma with African-centered concepts of communal and political trauma. Eurocentric, individualistic views of trauma often obscure more complex, holistic understandings of wellness. We also critique a key defense of trauma-informed care, arguing that claims of “objective” neurological effects of trauma reflect cultural and political biases more than scientific fact. This analysis warns that centering trauma risks pushing oppressed people to politicize their suffering in order to elicit guilt and political concessions, ultimately glorifying trauma rather than fostering community-driven solutions. Trauma-informed politics can place decisions about how Black communities should address trauma into the hands of white liberal institutions, diverting focus from Black self-determination as the long-term solution to the root causes of trauma.Support the showIn Search of Black Power is a Black-owned internet show and podcast. Breakdown to Breakthrough with Lisa A. Romano  4 Odd Trauma Responses Your Body Holds Onto In this insightful episode, Lisa A. Romano explores how unhealed trauma responses can remain stuck in the body, manifesting as physical symptoms that often go unnoticed or misunderstood. Lisa discusses four unusual trauma responses that may be affecting you more than you realize: Tightness in the Belly: This common response is often linked to unresolved fear or anxiety, stemming from past traumatic experiences. The body holds onto this tension, signaling that something remains unresolved. Freaking Out When Things Start Going Well: For many, success or happiness triggers a fear response. This reaction is rooted in the belief that good things won't last, leading to self-sabotage or overwhelming anxiety just when life starts to improve. Mistaking Thinking for Feeling: Trauma can disconnect you from your emotions, leading you to rely heavily on thinking rather than truly feeling. This can create a barrier to emotional healing, as the mind takes over what the heart needs to process. Pursed Lips or Tightness in the Face, Neck, and Jaw: Chronic tension in these areas physically manifests suppressed emotions, particularly anger or frustration. This response can become habitual, reflecting unexpressed feelings stuck in the body. Lisa delves into how these physical responses are not just quirks but signals from your body that something deeper needs attention. By recognizing and understanding these trauma responses, you can heal the mind-body connection, release stored tension, and move towards a more balanced, authentic self. Chronic pain can be incredibly debilitating, no matter the circumstances. But what do you do when every possible scan or investigation by medical professionals shows that there is no injury, no degeneration, absolutely nothing visible to warrant the often excruciating pain you're experiencing?  This was the experience of beloved 89.9 The Light breakfast host Kel McWilliam. The first sign of chronic back pain that would plague him for years was when he fell to the floor in agony, alone at home and unable to move. Eventually rushed to the emergency department on this occasion and others, he was admitted for days, needing strong pain medication to feel any relief.  After years of searching for answers two important health professionals steered Kel towards considering his mental health as the cause of his pain. This was start of Kel's difficult journey to face significant emotional challenges he'd closed himself off from. Now, no longer the 'back guy', Kel shares his journey of psychosomatic pain, debilitation, loss of confidence and ultimately healing through therapy and the support of his wonderful wife (and brekky co-host Lucy), family and friends. This is a powerful episode not to be missed.  https://thelight.com.au/shows/lucy-and-kel/ The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel van der Kolk See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're bringing back one of our most popular episodes ever on the pod - featuring “The Body Keeps the Score” author Dr. Bessel van der Kolk. And for a fun NEW take on the episode, Jen Hatmaker has asked one of her best friends, Amy Hardin, to join her to discuss their thoughts on this episode! Listen as Jen and Amy discuss their meet cute and then wade into the episode which delves into the relationship between trauma and the body, relating their personal experiences around this.  Dr. Van Der Kolk is a psychiatrist, author, researcher and author of the book The Body Keeps The Score. He has spent most of his career researching the causes of post traumatic stress, and is continuing to come away with groundbreaking discoveries about the power of our bodies to protect and shield us. Dr. Van Der Kolk brings us to the intersection of embodiment, mental well-being, and neuroscience and examines how we can understand our bodies' response to trauma so we can embrace our healing. * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “People think about trauma as that thing that happened a long time ago. But that's not the issue, because that thing is over. It happened last year or 10 years ago, it's not happening today. But the traces that it leaves inside of you, are happening now.” - Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk  “When you're traumatized, you try to not have all the sensations and feelings, and you turn on music loudly, or you drink or you take drugs, to make those feelings go away. And then to experience your feelings becomes very difficult.” - Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk  “The most elementary thing is breathing. Our breath is the one thing in our body that happens whether we want it or not. And we can learn to breathe differently. So there's a physiological function that gives us access to some core pieces of ourselves, where you slow down your breath, you focus on breath, you activate your parasympathetic nervous system, and you do become calmer. That's where you start.” - Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk   “You cannot take care of yourself unless you accept yourself for who you are.” - Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk  “When you're traumatized, one thing becomes another thing. So to open that up, and open up the mind to new possibilities is incredibly important.” - Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The Body Keeps The Score by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk - https://bit.ly/3zyCVPk Guest's Links: Dr. Van Der Kolk's Website - https://www.besselvanderkolk.com Dr. Van Der Kolk's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/thebodykeepsthescore Dr. Van Der Kolk's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thebodykeepsthescore/ Dr. Van Der Kolk's YouTube - https://bit.ly/3RZpoa8 Connect with Jen! In this episode, I share a powerful message from the Tucson Conference 2022, exploring the profound significance of Jesus's physical body, His resurrection, and what it means for us today. Rooted in 1 Peter 2:24, we delve into the creation, fall, and redemption of the human body, highlighting the reality of Jesus's bodily sacrifice and resurrection. Drawing from "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel A. van der Kolk, we learn how trauma can get trapped in our bodies, affecting our mental and physical health long after the events have passed. This message underscores that salvation through Jesus is both spiritual and physical, offering freedom from past traumas and sins. We discuss the resurrected body of Jesus as the ultimate victory over sin and death, bringing healing and wholeness to our lives. Join me as I explore how the church, as the body of Christ, plays a crucial role in our healing and redemption. This episode is not just a sermon but a heartfelt call to experience the transformative power of the resurrection in every aspect of our lives.
