Tuberculosis is one of the oldest diseases in human history – and it still kills more than a million people every year. In a new book, The Fault in Our Stars author John Green argues the infection persists only because we allow it to. Everything Is Tuberculosis takes on the history of the human response to and treatment of tuberculosis. The book, Green says, was partially inspired by a young boy named Henry whom the author met at a hospital in Sierra Leone. In today's episode, Green joins Here & Now's Robin Young for a conversation that touches on Henry's story, the history of tuberculosis in Green's own family, and the interconnected nature of human health.To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Today, Zachary and Emma are diving into a global health crisis that doesn't get nearly enough attention—tuberculosis (TB). It's one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the world, yet it has been largely ignored by wealthy nations and Big Pharma. But one person who refuses to let that stand is #1 New York Times bestselling author, YouTuber, and activist John Green. You probably know him for his bestseller The Fault in Our Stars or his YouTube series Crash Course, but he's also been waging a public battle to make TB treatment more accessible. His new book, Everything Is Tuberculosis, explores the history, science, and injustices surrounding this disease. We talk to John about why he took on this fight, how public pressure actually changed corporate policies, and what we can all do to help. Send us a textIt's hard to overstate how popular writer John Green is. His most famous book, The Fault in Our Stars – a novel about teenagers with cancer, young love, and fate – has sold tens of millions of copies. The film based on the book brought in more than $300 million and it's still popular to this day.Green has become a YouTube star and leader of online communities of fans including Nerdfighteria, as well as a co-host of an annual fundraiser for Project for Awesome. He's also passionate about public health. Green is a member of the board of trustees for Partners in Health and posts regular videos about it.A trip to Sierra Leone in west Africa got Green interested in tuberculosis. Now he's written a book about that ancient disease: Everything Is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection.There are more characters than numbers in the book – from Henry, the charismatic young man John met who appears throughout the story, to the thin and pale women who once made people perceive TB as sexy (really). The book brings a star quality to an often-forgotten infection. Green hopes he can focus the attention of his dedicated audience on this leading global killer. His work to bring attention to TB comes at a dire time, as the incidence of drug-resistant TB grows and the U.S. government slashes funding for global TB care and research.In this episode of One World, One Health, John Green chats with host Maggie Fox about the book, why he wrote it, and what he hopes its publication will accomplish.

That paradox has fascinated John Green, the popular YouTuber and author of The Fault in Our Stars, ever since he met a boy called Henry at a TB hospital in Sierra Leone. Green's new book, Everything is Tuberculosis, tells Henry's story and asks why this disease still kills more people every year than homicide, war, and malaria combined.

What a CreepSeason 26, Episode 8Neil GaimanBeloved author Neil Gaiman has recently been involved in a controversy following multiple allegations of sexual assault. Several women have come forward with accusations, some dating back decades. For example, a former employee at Gaiman's property accused him of coercive sexual behavior during her stay from 2014 to 2021. Other women have made similar claims, including Julia Hobsbawm, who described an unwanted sexual advance in the 1980s.According to a recent article in Business Insider: Tortoise Media's podcast, "Master: The allegations against Neil Gaiman," which was released on July 3, shares the stories of four women who alleged he sexually assaulted them in 1986 and 2022, respectively. Another woman appeared on a separate podcast with an allegation relating to 2012.Gaiman has denied all non-consensual aspects of the allegations. ah, yes, ✨the fault in our stars✨... quite literally one of the best books in existence. the book and the movie have won some (and by some, I mean many) awards. I love, love, love this book endlessly and have read it as many times as I've read moon rising (for those of my listeners who have been here a long while, you know ive read moon rising a LOT- and a lot is putting it lightly...), so I decided to review it on the podcast because it's a book that NEEDS to be shared. however, this book also focuses on some topics including death, cancer, loss of a loved one, and (in the book) frequent cussing (though this episode is not explicit). if those are uncomfortable for you to hear, I suggest holding off listening to this episode until you feel ready or listening with someone who understands why you feel uncomfortable listening to these kind of topics for moral support. also, there are some scenes in the book that aren't exactly easy to read- so for my younger listeners, you may want to wait until reading this or have someone who's older than you read it first just to make sure it's "safe." by the way, some of the segments in this episode took me many, many, many tries to record, so I would greatly appreciate if you listened to it. no pressure, though, if you don't want to listen to me rambling about hazel grace and her splendiferousness (that's not a word, I know, I made it up), then that's completely fine. oh, and of course, we can't let this be an episode without a question of the day! what is a book you have always wanted to read? for me, this would have to be the divergent trilogy, because I heard that they're great dystopian books! hopefully I can pick it up sometime soon and review it. :) I don't normally do this, but since I've been loving this song lately, here's a song recommendation of the day- all my love by noah kahan has been stuck in my head for the past couple days... and I love it! if you could take a couple minutes out of your day and tell me what you think of it, that'd be awesome. have a great day! email me at: scalesandtailspodcast@gmail.com spotify: {⭐︎junipers.jams⭐︎}

It's The New Mutants, the final installment in Fox's X-Men franchise victimized by both the Disney buyout and being the product of the guy who directed The Fault in Our Stars trying to make a horror movie for Freeform teenagers (among a bunch of other things). And in a shocking turn of events, Cole actually liked this one and thinks it's one of (if not the) best X-Men movies ever. Every year, tuberculosis claims over a million lives despite being curable. Tuberculosis or TB is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. About 5–10% of people infected with TB will eventually get symptoms. In the early stages a TB infection might cause chest pain, a cough, night sweats, and loss of appetite. But eventually it could create holes in the lungs and cause you to cough up blood. And of course, TB can be deadly.In this episode of Tiny Matters, Sam and Deboki talk with TB researcher Uzma Khan as well as John Green, the author of books including The Anthropocene Reviewed, Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, and Turtles All the Way Down. John is also the co-creator of Crash Course and one half of the vlogbrothers — the other half being his brother Hank Green, who Deboki and Sam chatted with on the show last year. Although he's best known as an author and YouTuber, last summer John made headlines for something else: fighting for more equitable access to tuberculosis treatments, particularly bedaquiline, an incredibly effective and essential medicine for patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis.In this episode, Sam and Deboki cover the science and history of this devastating yet treatable disease, the recent public pressure on companies that is leading to increased treatment and testing access, and clinical trials that make John and Uzma hopeful that one day this humanity-plaguing disease could be gone. In 2007, brothers Hank and John Green lived thousands of miles apart, so they started posting video blogs to each other on a strange new platform called YouTube. People began tuning in, and the daily Vlogbrothers posts became an early viral hit. Over time, the brothers grew that single channel into a sprawling collection of businesses, including a production studio—Complexly—that makes some of the most entertaining educational content on the internet. They're also both hugely successful authors; John's young adult novel The Fault in Our Stars is one of the best-selling books of all time. With every success, Hank says he's asked himself, “What's exciting? What's causing you the most stress? Head in that direction.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
