364: Is this the year Android rivals Apple for Smartphone Accessibility?

RNIB Tech Talk

Here at Tech Talk Towers we are, on occasion, told we talk about Apple a little too much. In our defence, we do so because we own a lot of their products, and they are far and away leading the pack when it comes to accessibility in smartphone tech. But that doesn't mean we should brush Android under the carpet. This week, Steven, Robin and Andy welcome Dinos from RNIB's Technology for Life team cover Android with much more clarity than usual. Hot off the release of a new Samsung flagship smartphone, we start by talking about the Galaxy S21; just how impressive is it? If the selling points are the screen quality, and the amazing camera ability, is it really something blind and partially sighted smartphone users would buy? Maybe the higher-end priced Android phones aren't for you - what's out there in the low-cost range? Are these phones still worth looking into? Accessibility is also a hot topic - as said above, we know Apple leads the way in terms of making their phones accessible - how far behind are Android? Could 2021 be the year where they catch up, or even overtake? Also, we talk more about Launchers - we've covered this in the past with Andy talking about how he uses Nova Launcher Pro on his Huawei, and how this comes with finger gestures, customisable home screens and app drawers, Dinos tells us all about Launchers with low vision users in mind, such as Big Launcher. Also on this week, emails - Svetlana from Siberia emails in about Braille, we hear about Neatebox being increasingly available over one part of Scotland, and more on Bumpon alternatives! We'd love to know your thoughts on Android smartphones - if you own one, or are thinking of buying one - what's swaying you one way or the other? If you're thinking of leaving the Apple ecosystem - why? What's been the final straw? Email us at TechTalk@RNIB.org.uk, (mailto:TechTalk@RNIB.org.uk,) and it'll feature on an upcoming show. Here's a little leaser - more Android talk coming next week too! See you then :)

Also at www.theimpactinterview.com This episode is going out on Purple Tuesday, which is aimed at raising awareness of the value and needs of disabled customers, and making the customer experience more accessible. In the UK alone, the Purple Pound – the spending power of disabled people and their families – is worth a staggering £274 billion and is estimated to be rising by 14% per year. But very few organisations know how to cater for the disability market, which is a huge frustration for disabled people, and a huge missed opportunity for organisations who could be benefiting both socially and commercially by accessing the disability market. My guest this week is Gavin Neate, a social entrepreneur on a mission to improve access and accessibility for disabled customers and consumers. After a career as a police dog handler in the RAF, he worked for 18 years as a mobility instructor for Guide Dogs for the Blind. That experience working with disabled people - and seeing the challenges they face firsthand - led him to launch Neatebox in 2015. Neatebox's mission is to create solutions using smart technology that solve some of the everyday challenges faced by disabled people. They have built two smartphone products that have been really well-received and will hopefully be widely adopted not just in the UK but in the US and globally. So after years of being ignored or mishandled by councils and customer-facing businesses, inclusion of the disabled community is finally firmly on the agenda. www.neatebox.com

After leaving school Gavin Neate joined the armed forces and served in the military police as a dog handler. He was based up at RAF Lucas, and just north of Lucas was a Guide Dogs for the Blind training centre and he used to go along and do voluntary work.On finishing his military career and not unnaturally he applied for and then became a guide dog instructor. He saw first hand the difficulties that sight-impaired people faced in their daily lives and determined to do something about it.He became involved in a project to explore how GPS might be used to help visually impaired people navigate the world around them. With the arrival of the smartphone, Gavin saw an opportunity to link smartphone apps and hardware and Neatebox was born.In this podcast, Gavin talks about the applications he developed that are making a real difference to the lives of many disabled people throughout the UK.Links: -Neatebox Button https://bit.ly/3kka0SwNeatebox Welcome https://bit.ly/2SZyrZINeatebox Website https://www.neatebox.com/

We're back at Camp Digital and here is the first of three episodes recorded live in Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre. In this episode we are joined for a chat by the fireside by Gavin Neate, founder of Neatebox. After serving with The RAF in the Military Police, Gavin began an 18-year career with Guide Dogs for the Blind as a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor. His comprehensive knowledge of visual impairment and routine experience of poorly installed pedestrian crossings led him to design a unique system, with which any person living with reduced mobility, could safely and automatically operate a pedestrian crossing using their smartphone. The ‘Button’ system has been winning innovation awards and is now installed in the entire town of Largs and increasingly available across the UK. This success has led to a range of smart solutions based on the challenges disabled people face every day and the latest release, “Welcome”, has provided a smart platform which connects disabled shoppers to customer services teams providing the service team with training and awareness immediately prior to their customer's arrival. Gavin has a real love for equality and inclusion and believes firmly that a positive approach and a clear understanding of all parties' points of view is the foundation for the very best solutions.
