Artist league's Beacon exhibit guaranteed authentic The art world's AI problem stretches beyond the frame because the abuse of Photoshop is difficult to determine and software that mimics the act of painting is becoming more sophisticated. In November, The American Artists Professional League discovered that a piece in its 96th Grand National Exhibition in Manhattan consisted of too many pixels and not enough paint. In response, the League deployed detection software to ensure that none of the 85 small works on display at its Realism on the Hudson exhibit at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon is tainted by algorithms. The show, which includes pieces by artists in 28 states, represents a master class in composition and technique. The Howland partnership came about after Westchester County resident and League president Aki Kano displayed two watercolors at the Bannerman Island Gallery on Main Street in April 2023. She asked Laurie Clark of the gallery if the League could exhibit at the space. Clark, a Beacon mainstay, steered her to the larger cultural center. This is the League's third show in Beacon and the plan is to make it an annual event. The subjects include nudes, portraits, landscapes, still lifes, water scenes, nature studies and plenty of flowers. Some of the detail is hyper-realistic, such as the squirrel in Karla Mann's "Snack Time," hair curls in "Blue Fragment" by Gabrielle Tito and lace in Eileen Nistler's "Pretty Please." "Still Life with Aged Cheese," by Victor Mordasov, and Zhi Li's stunning table study, "Daisy Flower w Lemon," convey exquisite texture. In "Summer Lovers," Karen Israel's painting of two dogs frolicking in water, the fur looks wet. "Angel's Light" by Katherine Irish features excellent cloud work, as does the sunset in "Cuttyhunk's Tranquility," by Desiree Rose Zaslow. The standout drawing, "Which Way" by Jeff R. Edwards, depicts a meadow pathway leading to a forest. Other notable black-and-white images include Mike Denny's "Secrets" and "Lure of the Sea," by John Calabrese. In the vivid painting "Autumn Fire," Keith Willis plays with the reflection of a colorful grove of trees in a river, one of several pieces that renders water with skill. Other notable depictions include Jess Bell's shimmering "Luminate" and "Echoes of Rust and Tide," by Barbara Leger, one of seven award winners in the show. Jodie Klein's painting ". . . and the boat makes three" channels Winslow Homer. "Echoes of Rust and Tide" by Barbara Leger "Exeunt" by Anna Toberman "Homeless in Lisbon" by Don Taylor "Hummer at Feeder II" by Kelly Best Bourgeois "Sweet Rain" by Fang Sullivan "Teal" by Chantal Sulkow "That Tree" by Jessie Rasche The League, a New York City nonprofit founded in 1928, has 600 members and organizes six exhibits each year. Artists are vetted for quality and professionalism - and now, for digital assists. The kerfuffle in November led the organization to adopt a policy regarding the role of computers in the creation of art. "We sent hundreds of emails back and forth exploring the issue," Kano says. "This is not like using ChatGPT to help write a memo; a well-respected organization almost bought [the work]." To maintain the integrity of its exhibitions, the League only "accepts art made from scratch," says Kano. "We are sounding the alarm for galleries, museums and other institutions that this is going on. There's a need to value creativity done the old-fashioned way." The Howland Cultural Center, at 477 Main St. in Beacon, is open Saturdays and most Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The exhibit continues through April 13. On March 22, from 1 to 3 p.m., Brian McClear will paint a large still life in oils.

A new research group designed to advance AI accountability research has launched at Trinity College Dublin. The AI Accountability Lab (AIAL) will be led by Dr Abeba Birhane, Research Fellow in the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre at the School of Computer Science and Statistics in Trinity. It will focus on critical issues across broad topics, such as the examination of opaque technological ecologies and the execution of audits on specific models and training datasets. As AI technologies continue to shape society, the AIAL will examine their broader impacts and hold powerful entities accountable for technological harms, advocating for policies rooted in evidence. Research will specifically address potential corporate capture of current regulatory processes, outline justice-driven model evaluation, as well as audits of deployed models, specifically those used on vulnerable groups. Speaking about the work of the AIAL, Dr Birhane said: "The AI Accountability Lab aims to foster transparency and accountability in the development and use of AI systems. And we have a broad and comprehensive view of AI accountability. This includes better understanding and critical scrutiny of the wider AI ecology - for example, via systematic studies of possible corporate capture, to the evaluation of specific AI models, tools, and training datasets." The AIAL is supported by a grant of just under €1.5 million from three groups: the AI Collaborative, an Initiative of the Omidyar Group; Luminate; and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. AI technologies, despite their supposed potential, have been shown to encode and exacerbate existing societal norms and inequalities, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups. In sectors such as healthcare, education, and law enforcement, deployment of AI technologies without thorough evaluation can not only have nuanced but catastrophic impact on individuals and groups but can also alter social fabrics. For example, in healthcare, a liver allocation algorithm used by the UK's National Health Service (NHS) has been found to discriminate by age. No matter how iIl, patients under the age of 45 seem currently unable to receive a transplant, due to the predictive logic underlying the algorithm. Additionally, incorporating AI algorithms without proper evaluation has a direct or implicit impact on people. For example, a decision support algorithm used by the Danish child protection services to aid child protection deployed without formal evaluation has been found to suffer from numerous issues, including information leakage, inconsistent risk scores, and age-based discrimination. Furthermore, errors in facial recognition technologies have led to misidentification and the arrest of innocent people in the UK and the US. In education, the use of student data for purposes beyond schooling drew criticism in the UK. Secret agreements allowing authorities to monitor benefit claims raised fears of increased surveillance, eroding public trust in technology, and disproportionate targeting of low-income families (source Schools Week). These few examples illustrate the need for transparency, accountability, and robust oversight of AI systems, which are central topics the AI Accountability Lab seeks to address through research and evidence-driven policy advocacy. The AIAL will be housed in the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity. Professor Gregory O'Hare, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Head of School of Computer Science & Statistics at Trinity, said: "The new dawn of AI associated with generative AI has heralded a velocity of AI adoption hitherto fore not witnessed. The provenance of such systems is however fundamental. The AI Accountability Lab will be at the forefront of research that will examine such systems; through algorithmic auditability it will create a National and European Centre of Excellence in this space, delivering thought leadership and informing best practice." Venture capital funding into Irish technology SMEs treaded water in the third quarter of this year, finishing at €192.5m, just 1% ahead of the same period last year, according to the Irish Venture Capital Association Venture Pulse survey, published today in association with William Fry. This compares to a global trend where VC funding in the third quarter fell by 15% year over year. VC funding in Ireland for the nine months to the end of September fell by 18% to €945.3m from €1.1bn in 2023. Globally, VC funding fell by 3.7% over the same period. International VC funding into Ireland fell by almost €200m or 24% for the year to the end of September. International funding for the third quarter of €85m amounted to 44% of the total for the period. Gerry Maguire, chairperson of the Irish Venture Capital Association, commented: "A positive feature of the third quarter is that the number of deals rose by 55% to 59. While there were no rounds in the €30m plus range, this was compensated for by an increase in deals under €10m, including seed funding. These underlying trends reflect a buoyant ecosystem in Ireland for early-stage companies, many of which are involved in cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber Security, Quantum Computing, MedTech and Envirotech. "However, the potential for an isolationist-leaning incoming administration in the White House to implement policies that could be negative for Ireland emphasises the need for us to take these Indigenous companies to the next level and grow our own tech champions rather than rely on less committed overseas investment." Sarah-Jane Larkin, director general of the Irish Venture Capital Association, said that while there were no deals over €30m in this quarter, there was an encouraging bounce in smaller rounds. Deals in the €3-€5m range rose by 52% to €29m. €1m-€3m rounds grew by 16% to €26m, and deals under €1m rose by nearly a third to €9m. Seed funding, or first rounds raised by SMEs, more than doubled to €33.5m. Commenting on the opportunities for an incoming Government to enhance Ireland's competitiveness in an increasingly uncertain global market, Ms Larkin welcomed the small business provisions in a number of party manifestos, which emphasised the need for scaling up funding and, in particular, the backing of pension funds in this regard. She said that while the support for early-stage firms was a positive feature of the Irish economy, a warning signal was that the average deal size in Ireland has fallen since 2018 compared to comparative European countries. "Drip feeding of small rounds is not efficient. As a result, the proportion of Irish firms going out of business is higher than the European average." The largest deals in the third quarter were medtech company Neurent Medical (€18.2m); renewable energy firm Circal (€15m); EV and solar installation provider ePower (€15m); medical device company Luminate (€13.9m) and medtech firm, Loci Orthopaedics (€13.8m). Sarah-Jane Larkin added: "Access to public capital for VCs through the likes of EI (Enterprise Ireland) and ISIF (Ireland Strategic Investment Fund) in Ireland and EIF (European Investment Fund in Europe, has never been better. However, there is now a severe shortage of matching private capital in Ireland from investors such as pension funds, family offices and corporates. Government policy can have a significant impact in fixing this, as is happening in the UK, and in several EU countries such as Denmark and France." Life sciences were the leading sector in the nine months to the end of September raising 42% of the total (€392.8m), followed by Envirotech (13%), Regtech (10%), Fintech and Software (both 9%). In the third quarter, AI & Machine Learning was the third highest sector raising 11%.
For the last 18 years the vinyl record industry in the U.S. has sustained a continuous uptick in sales. So when a report last month by Luminate, the leading music industry source for tracking music consumption, indicated a precipitous 33% drop during the first half of 2024, it caused quite a stir. Since then, Luminate has retracted its original report, and followed up with a corrected report saying vinyl sales were actually up 2.2% in 2024.To find why this happened, we speak with Chris Muratore, Director at Luminate and music industry insider Billy Fields from Warner Music Group.Ultimately counting record sales isn't as easy as it may seem. Although Luminate gets accurate accounting of record sales from major online websites and big box retailers, sales from independent record stores (“indies”) are harder to come by. That wouldn't be such a big deal, except for the fact that an estimated 40% of record sales are from indies in the U.S. So with only a small fraction of indies reporting vinyl sales, Luminate has always estimated the indie portion in its reports. But how they estimate matters.A small change in Luminate's estimation algorithm caused a dramatic turn of events. But there is more to the story of vinyls resurgence, so we hope you'll tune in to take a deep dive into the vinyl music industry.Thank you to our sponsors SVS and Q Acoustics! This week on Equity, the podcast crew discusses several weird things and at least one cool thing.Kirsten Korosec, Devin Coldewey, and Rebecca Bellan first talked about the least weird thing of the week, how nice it is that Cohere co-founder Nick Frosst has a band that people really like. Then we get weird. First the good weird: a helmet that squeezes your head, but for a really good reason. It prevents hair loss from chemotherapy. Devin covered Luminate's latest fundraise and news, and everyone was pleased that money was going to a startup that may really be helping people feel better about themselves during a difficult time. The company is hoping to improve at-home care as well.Next, Kirsten explained the weird phenomenon of Flink, the “quick commerce” startup that just recently was rumored to be on the block for about $106 million, instead raising $115 million. Quite a turnaround! But as the team discusses, it may be that investors see the possibility that the “tumultuous time” for this sector is ending and Flink may have a good grip on the German market. Still…Then the weirdness begins in earnest. Rebecca is at the “Principled Business Summit,” aimed at “reclaiming capitalism” from, apparently, itself. She is getting mixed messages from the crowd and the content, which seems to combine enthusiasm for doing the right thing with some fringe tendencies to do… other things. And weirdest of all, autonomous trucking startup TuSimple's pivot to… AI-generated animation and video games. What?! Though there is some overlap between simulation and animation/gaming, it's a wild and unexpected change for the company, and a lot of shareholders are not going for it. Apparently the new division is working on another adaptation of “The Three-Body Problem,” so that's good… but what about the $450 million they were going to spend on trucks? That conflict is playing out before our eyes. Press play, and catch up!Equity is TechCrunch's flagship podcast, produced by Theresa Loconsolo, and posts every Wednesday and Friday.

According to a 2023 report from Luminate, formerly known as Nielsen SoundScan, over 120,000 new tracks are uploaded to the music streaming service Spotify every day. That's over 36,500,000 tracks per year. According to that same report, over 45 million of those tracks never received a single play. That's bad news for musicians as Spotify recently announced that it would cease making royalty payments for songs with less than 1,000 annual streams. But all hope is not lost, Ulyssa, an Indiana-based record label, is dedicated to discovering and celebrating the vast trove of unheard music on Spotify. This week on Cultural Manifesto, listen to an interview with Ulyssa founders John Williamson and Eric Deines. Ulyssa also issues a wide variety of lo-fi, electronic, and experimental music from across the globe. A recent release, titled Contrahouse, features the Grammy-winning pianist and singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby. Ulyssa has even coined a new genre of music, they call it Toejazz, a reference to the 1991 Sega Genesis video game Toejam and Earl.
