Today, on TechCrunch's Equity podcast, hosts Kirsten Korosec, Anthony Ha and Margaux MacColl are unpacking the week's news, including GM's decision to give up on self-driving startup Cruise. The choice initially came as a shock considering the $10 billion GM pumped into the company over the years, but it became clearer when examining Cruise's tumultuous 2023 and 2024. Listen to the full episode to hear about: Freysa.ai's public challenge and what's motivating users to make the AI chat bot fall in love with them. Why VCs are lining up to back Lumen Orbit's moonshot of data centers in space. Which startups are stepping up amid a looming TikTok ban and if we'll see another company capture Bluesky's success. According to Anthony, it all depends on, "luck, timing, and something to do with critical mass." At Tesla's robotaxi reveal event last week, several Optimus humanoid robots mingled with guests, pouring drinks and cracking jokes. Impressive technology, but the vocals and some of the gesticulations appear to have been remotely controlled by humans, something Tesla did not disclose. Today on Equity, Rebecca Bellan chatted with TechCrunch's hardware editor Brian Heater about Tesla's Optimus bots, the market opportunity for humanoid robots, and other companies that are leading the charge in this industry. We'll dive into:A CBInsights report which found that funding in 2024 already reached new highs for humanoid robots and PitchBook data that suggests funding into humanoid robot companies has reached close to $1 billion as of October. Where we're most likely to see humanoid robot applications in the coming years. Automakers like BMW plan to deploy startup Figure's robots at their plants, and Amazon, which has been a huge proponent of robotics for over a decade now, has tested Agility's digit robot at its warehouses. When we could see humanoid robots enter homes. Some companies plan to have their robots help older folks with household tasks like Kind Humanoid. Equity will be back on Friday with our weekly news roundup, so we'll talk to you then!Equity is TechCrunch's flagship podcast, produced by Theresa Loconsolo, and posts every Wednesday and Friday. There is another lie that threatens our confidence and causes our identity to sink: “I am what people think or say about me.” We can assign so much value to the opinions and words to the people that their words cause us to rise or sink. We can even begin identify ourselves by their words. Solomon is right, however, when he says, “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe” (Prov 29:25). When we assign so much value to the opinions of people, we will only be caught in a trap. But trusting in the Lord and in his opinion of us only keeps us safe. This is God's opinion of us in Christ: “You are my beloved child. I love you. And you are simply awesome. My masterpiece. Created in Christ Jesus to do good works that I have prepared in advance for you to do.” Yet, believing this and living by it is harder than we can imagine. How can we live for an audience of One, who simple thinks that we're awesome? We can live this way by entering places of vulnerability. By opening ourselves up to our closest friends, what some call their “3 am friends,” and, by being truly transparent and vulnerable. As we enter these places of vulnerability, we will let our friends see all the way to the bottom of us (which isn't always so beautiful). By being transparent and authentic with them, we can break through the idea that we have to put forward a façade that people will validate. But it's not just that. The best friends will confront us with our sins to break us of any pride remaining. But more than that, our best friends will preach Christ to us, truly consoling and comforting us with the promises of our Savior God. Romans 1:1-13
This is a special message from Dallas Chief Eddie Garcia as he is retiring, after 33 years, from the law enforcement profession. It is a sad time for the Dallas Police Department as we are losing a true innovator and a “Cop's Cop” natural leader from the Department. Eddie Garcia started his law enforcement career, age 21, at the San Jose Police Department and he rose to become Chief of that Department in 2016. He served in Narcotics, SWAT, the Homicide Unit and then began to climb into leadership, setting the path to Dallas Texas. The City of Dallas was reeling from skyrocketing crime, low Department morale and on the heels of covid and the defund the police movement and there was an opening for the Chief of Police position. The Department was in need of a strong leader, the community demanded a transparent Chief, and the City prayed for a figure that could turn around a much needed police department. In February of 2021 Chief Eddie Garcia took over as the Department's 30th Police Chief and the first Latino Chief in its 140 year history and quickly went to work building his command staff, connecting with the community and building trust in the Department. Eddie was and always will be an old street cop masquerading as a four star chief and the City of Dallas if lucky to have had a glimpse of true leadership that we hope that other future Chiefs will take note. Chief Garcia will leave the Dallas Police Department on November 1st to start a new journey in the State's Capital as the Assistant City Manager of Public Safety. We will miss you Boss and we love you. Garcia's administrations accomplishments: Four straight years of violent crime reduction. Greenlighting the implementation of the Wellness Unit. Better relationships with community and city leaders. Alcohol Leave Policy that has assisted 14 officers to date. Authorizing the usage of blocker trucks to protect officers. Improved recruiting from outside the State. Creation of lateral transfer policy.

We were sitting on the runway at O'Hare Airport for a long time, in an airplane that is. I thought we were on our way when we left the gate. I said to myself "Okay, in a couple of minutes we'll be in the air and on our way." And then they routed us across the backside of O'Hare, and I saw some lovely storage facilities. We finally ended up in a long, long line of aircraft. I've got a little problem with impatience, but I sure don't want the pilot to have that problem. See, he knows that you do not take off until you get clearance from the tower...no matter how long that means you have to wait. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Taking Off Before God Says 'Go.'" Now, our word for today from the Word of God comes from Genesis 27. It's a pretty powerful lesson in faith and patience from the life of Rebecca, Isaac's wife. Maybe you remember that God had promised that the younger son, Jacob, would actually end up with the blessing rather than the usual thing, which would be that his older brother, Esau, would get it. Unfortunately, it looked like Isaac was dying and he hadn't given the blessing to Jacob. So Rebecca kind of panics and says, "Oh boy, I'd better do something about this to make sure that my favorite son gets the blessing. God said he would." Now, she has no clearance from the tower to do this. God didn't tell her to do it, she doesn't even talk to Him about it. She just takes off. And she has this scheme where he will wear various hairy things on his arms and try to smell like the outdoors so he'll feel like his brother and smell like his brother, who's a hunter, and he'll just lie about who he is. And you know what? Isaac can't see very well. He does deceive his father and he gets the blessing. So, do they win? They lose. Listen to the expensive result beginning in Genesis 27:41. "Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, 'The days of mourning for my father are near, and then I will kill my brother Jacob.'" Then it goes on to say as Rebecca now counsels Jacob, "Now, then, my son, do what I say. Flee to my brother Laban. Stay with him for a while until your brother's fury subsides. When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him" - you think that's going to happen? - "I'll send word for you to come back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?" And in a sense that's exactly what happened. She didn't see Jacob for 14 years - her relationship was broken with Esau. Oh, by the way, Isaac didn't die - he lived 20 more years! All of this agony happened in this family because Rebecca couldn't wait for God to do it His way. Oh, she knew Jacob should have the blessing, but it just wasn't happening fast enough. Does that sound familiar at all? You thought God was going to act by now, but you're still waiting. The temptation is to panic and say, "Oh, man! It's now or never!" Now, you don't have a "go" from the Lord, but you're still starting to take off. You know, if a pilot does that without the person who can see all the other aircraft, who can see all the implications of taking off right now, he's going to be flying into disaster. If the child of God does that, he's flying into disaster. Ask God for the patience to wait on the runway. And remember that old wisdom, "Don't doubt in the darkness, or shall I say in the waiting room, what God has told you in the light." Avoid the heartache that comes from taking off without clearance from the flight controller of your life.
