Brooke is joined by Gavin Neate, the founder of WelcoMe, and who has been working in the disability sector, to discuss his passion for supporting disabled individuals. Gavin shares his experiences working with Guide Dogs for the Blind and the inspiration behind his innovative tool, aimed at improving accessibility for disabled people in various businesses. They delve into the importance of equity in experiences for disabled individuals, the impact of Welcome on both disabled people and businesses, and the challenge of proving the existence of the Purple Pound in the business world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gavin highlights the importance of promoting disability awareness in businesses and the community to create a more inclusive environment. The introduction of WelcoMe, a digital platform that allows disabled individuals to inform businesses about their needs before arriving, has been well-received and has the potential to revolutionise customer service for disabled individuals. There is a great need for disabled individuals to be seen as business partners and consumers rather than solely recipients of charity. Collaborations with major companies like Levi's and Curry's demonstrate efforts to prove the economic power of disabled consumers, known as the Purple Pound, by providing tailored services and training for staff to cater to their needs. By actively participating in initiatives like using Welcome in businesses, disabled individuals can contribute to proving the economic value of the disabled community and advocate for more inclusive practices in society. BEST MOMENTS "It's almost like this whole hub. And it's crazy. And it's intense. You get to speak to people and meet people and something someone said to me at nadex was this idea of referring to people as pre-disabled." "I just want to remove the barriers, which is what WelcoMe does" "We need to get strength from other people. And I totally understand that, but until we get past that and start welcoming other people into our groups, we're not, all we're going to be seeing is a minority promoting our minority need." VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 ABOUT THE GUEST Gavin Neate developed WelcoMe whilst working for Guide Dogs for the Blind as Mobility Instructor, in answer to the question, "Wouldn't it be easier if staff had access to disability awareness training immediately prior to a disabled person arriving?". In 2015 he left Guide Dogs and started his own technology company in order to come up with a solution. Although Gavin is currently non disabled he is acutely aware that one day he and others who who don't engage with disability issues will be, and is on a mission to engage them, and raise universal awareness of disability and the lives of disabled people. There are 14 million people in the UK with some form of disability. For too many, using public transport can be a nightmare - whether it's getting on and off a bus, or navigating the complex, stressful and often-confusing environment of a large transport interchange. Sadly, when it comes to accessibility, there's some way to go before we can genuinely say that our public transport system really is open and accessible for all. In this episode we take a look at what airports and airline operators are doing to make flying more accessible. How are new technologies making a difference? What do innovators need to be thinking about when developing solutions for people with disabilities? And what is the Catapult doing to support better collaboration and support for companies working in this space? We meet Ann Frye, the UK Government's Disability and Access Ambassador for Aviation, Fredi Nonyelu, CEO and Founder of Briteyellow, Gavin Neate, CEO and Founder of WelcoMe, Yael Shomron, Marketing Manager at Step Hear, and Andrew Chadwick, the Catapult's Interim Ecosystem Director for Airports & Aviation. Gavin is someone who is passionate about promoting disability awareness. He has also made fighting for equality and fairness a principle objective in his life. After working with people with disabilities for a number of years he became aware of how much discrimination such individuals often face due to simple ignorance. He has now made it his mission to change attitudes towards disability by using technology. “What we are doing when we make sure everybody in our society has access to information is we are changing the way society interacts. Now, this is such a big idea. Also at www.theimpactinterview.com This episode is going out on Purple Tuesday, which is aimed at raising awareness of the value and needs of disabled customers, and making the customer experience more accessible. In the UK alone, the Purple Pound – the spending power of disabled people and their families – is worth a staggering £274 billion and is estimated to be rising by 14% per year. But very few organisations know how to cater for the disability market, which is a huge frustration for disabled people, and a huge missed opportunity for organisations who could be benefiting both socially and commercially by accessing the disability market. My guest this week is Gavin Neate, a social entrepreneur on a mission to improve access and accessibility for disabled customers and consumers. After a career as a police dog handler in the RAF, he worked for 18 years as a mobility instructor for Guide Dogs for the Blind. That experience working with disabled people - and seeing the challenges they face firsthand - led him to launch Neatebox in 2015. Neatebox's mission is to create solutions using smart technology that solve some of the everyday challenges faced by disabled people. They have built two smartphone products that have been really well-received and will hopefully be widely adopted not just in the UK but in the US and globally. So after years of being ignored or mishandled by councils and customer-facing businesses, inclusion of the disabled community is finally firmly on the agenda. www.neatebox.com
After leaving school Gavin Neate joined the armed forces and served in the military police as a dog handler. He was based up at RAF Lucas, and just north of Lucas was a Guide Dogs for the Blind training centre and he used to go along and do voluntary work.On finishing his military career and not unnaturally he applied for and then became a guide dog instructor. He saw first hand the difficulties that sight-impaired people faced in their daily lives and determined to do something about it.He became involved in a project to explore how GPS might be used to help visually impaired people navigate the world around them. With the arrival of the smartphone, Gavin saw an opportunity to link smartphone apps and hardware and Neatebox was born.In this podcast, Gavin talks about the applications he developed that are making a real difference to the lives of many disabled people throughout the UK.Links: -Neatebox Button https://bit.ly/3kka0SwNeatebox Welcome https://bit.ly/2SZyrZINeatebox Website https://www.neatebox.com/

We're back at Camp Digital and here is the first of three episodes recorded live in Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre. In this episode we are joined for a chat by the fireside by Gavin Neate, founder of Neatebox. After serving with The RAF in the Military Police, Gavin began an 18-year career with Guide Dogs for the Blind as a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor. His comprehensive knowledge of visual impairment and routine experience of poorly installed pedestrian crossings led him to design a unique system, with which any person living with reduced mobility, could safely and automatically operate a pedestrian crossing using their smartphone. The ‘Button’ system has been winning innovation awards and is now installed in the entire town of Largs and increasingly available across the UK. This success has led to a range of smart solutions based on the challenges disabled people face every day and the latest release, “Welcome”, has provided a smart platform which connects disabled shoppers to customer services teams providing the service team with training and awareness immediately prior to their customer's arrival. Gavin has a real love for equality and inclusion and believes firmly that a positive approach and a clear understanding of all parties' points of view is the foundation for the very best solutions. Here, he talks to us about what experience really means, in terms of professional progression and his experience of being a social tech entrepreneur.
