She was born in Chinatown, San Francisco but she was sent to live with her grandparents in China from age 1-5. Then she returned to San Francisco to start Kindergarten. Elaine was taught traditional Chinese values however, she grew up in a very non-traditional Chinese home, because her father didn't go down a traditional path because he was a former "gangster" turned struggling entrepreneur. Because of this, her childhood was full of judgement from her extended family and personal trauma at home. Her family had to be secretive and she wasn't allowed a normal childhood. She wasn't allowed to attend birthday parties and unlike most kids, she would never want to leave school because that was her "safe place to escape."Elaine went from being "invisible" as a child and always wanting to be the "peacemaker" to an angry, rebellious teenager, as she puts it, her "Eminem Girl" phase. Elaine was eventually able to discover the root of her calling in activism at the young age of 16, when her younger brother was falsely accused of a crime and was sent to juvenile hall. Elaine used her fire and passion to help people and was able to fight for him and set her innocent brother free. However, everything changed her Senior year when the family was uprooted to Sacramento.Elaine lost her community, friends, and ability to participate in activism. Having to start over Elaine ended up getting to a few toxic relationships and although she was easily accepted into UC Davis, she found herself failing in school and lost her financial aid. Afraid to tell her parents, she had to work 3 jobs and live a secret life until she got an internship that changed her life. She realized she was not made for school and was an entrepreneur at heart. She ended up working her way up to VP in just a few short years with her the company. She was in talks for a partner position at the age of 26, however she knew she was created to make a bigger impact on her own terms. She turned down the offer and started Neon Owl with her brother. This motivated Elaine to set onto her journey of self-discovery and entrepreneurship. She talks about her solo cross country drive, where her love for New York came from and why she loves electronic music festivals such as EDC and Nocturnal Wonderland, which was the inspiration for Neon Owl.This was an exciting and lesson filled episode. This week, we're excited to have the opportunity to chat with author Chad Lutzke, who is getting ready to release the first book in The Neon Owl series on February 28th. The Neon Owl is a bit of a departure for Chad and finds him putting his own spin on the noir genre. We had the pleasure of reading an advance copy and we're confident you'll love it as much as we did. The Neon Owl has a cast of memorable characters and plenty of humor that makes it a compulsively readable novel that will leave you clamoring for the next books in the series. We had a lot of fun talking to Chad again and learning a bit more about his writing process. During this episode, we talked about the influences of The Neon Owl, collaborating styles, poo humor, the joy of discovery while writing without an outline, the autobiographical nature of The Same Deep Water As You, "mumblecore" films, ambiguous endings, his punk zine Cornflake Overdose, and so much more. Check out our conversation with Chad now right here on Ink Heist or on your favorite streaming service.

In this episode of Lean the F*ck Out, Gretchen and Tera talk with Elaine Huang, the founder of Neon Owl, a media company and lifestyle brand that focuses on creating positive, inspirational content, while connecting artists and fans to give back to charities around the world. Elaine shares her entrepreneurial journey and how she has built and grown Neon Owl, as well as her coaching and consulting business and Gypsy Social. Elaine is a power house at connecting with people and has some amazing advice on how to kick ass and build your brand, and for those that are just starting out she shares some bonus info on how to choose your direction or passion project. Passion to Profit Episode Highlights Elaine left a six-figure income position to launch Neon Owl.  When deciding on a business focus, ask yourself: What would you do if money wasn’t an issue? “By leading with people and purpose we will all prosper.” At one point Elaine was spending all her energy on building her businesses, often working up to 100 hour a weeks. Neon Owl has volunteers and ambassadors all over the world that now support the business. Some of Elaine’s favorite tools for running her businesses: Google, Slack, Airtable, Wunderlist, Calm App, and paper and pencil. Each morning, write your intentions for the day. Without intentions you cannot receive clear results. As Elaine’s businesses grew she naturally shifted her business to work with others like her: others who wanted to leave corporate and do their own thing. It took Elaine three years to figure out her business model. She did it through adaptation and listening to her customers. “You have to be prepared to get scrappy [if you are going to run your own business].” “Truly think about what you want when you decide to start your own business. Is this something you would create and stay up late nights for, even if you make jack shit?” Continue to surround yourself with other dreamers and doers and keep investing in yourself if you want to turn your passion to profit. Elaine Huang Elaine is the founder of Neon Owl, a media company and lifestyle brand that focuses on creating positive, inspirational content, while connecting artists and fans to give back to charities around the world. She left her six-figure income position as VP to create a life of passion and purpose. Since starting Neon Owl 2 years ago, the company has made waves in and outside of the industry, taking charge in leading it towards connecting music with philanthropy. Neon Owl has put together multiple charity shows to support youth, music and the arts, as well as other non-profits. She has also partnered up with some of her favorite artists to join forces in creating the Dance. Give. Inspire. charity line, where 100% of the proceeds goes back to building wells for clean water in developing countries like Haiti and Uganda. In this episode, I chat with Elaine Huang, the founder of Neon Owl, a media company that focuses on bringing positive, inspirational content back into music media, while connecting artists and fans to give back to charities around the world. She left her 6 figure income position as VP to create a life out of passion and purpose, and is now helping others do the same. Her cause is one I can truly get behind, and I really enjoyed our inspiring conversation.  Guest Bio: In short and without being able to avoid sounding cliche, I am complex and more than what meets the eye. I’m a coffee addict that has been a tad bit disappointed about the selection since moving to New York from San Francisco (Philz, Sightglass, and Blue Bottle FTW). I went from making 6 figures at a growing company with the opportunity to make partner, to following my passions with $2,000 in the bank account and no back up plan. With a trunk full of shit, I embarked on a 6 week cross country road trip and move to New York City. My passions revolve around music, travel, adventure, growth, and people. If I only had 2 more years to live, that previous 6 figure income job was not my way of fulfilling my life’s purpose and making this world a better place. It was not my way of being the boldest version of myself and inspiring others to do the same. I’ve been told countless amount of times of my bravery for making such a ballsy move, but have yet to tell my parents back home that I’m gone for good. The holidays are right around the corner, so our Asian gathering with duck, chicken, and seafood will sure be an unsettling one. I’ve spent too much of life caught in between what I wanted to do and what was expected of me, whether it was out of being a good daughter, guilt, or that continuous chase of status and success. One day I woke up and realized my shift in mentality, which must have been boiling into fruition over time (with the help of Darren Hardy and Lewis Howes). To use my obligations towards my college student loans and my parents daughter as a continuous excuse of why I wasn’t following my truest dreams, or to live life to my fullest and worry about the consequences later? After 27 years, I finally chose the latter. It’s not as if I was paying off any of my school loans any faster with my 6 figure income. I was spending it on food, travel, coffee, my shopping addiction, and festivals. As for my parents, well… I guess they’d just have to eventually come around. A happy me eventually leads to a happy them. This is a very American way of thinking, as they have scolded me many times before. But mom and dad, I swear this will pay off. Who am I? I am a red-headed ball of fire that left the good life to chase the great. I didn’t have to travel all the way across the country to make a life out of my passions, but I wanted that extra challenge. They say that if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere, right? Well this firecracker intends to be making it, and leaving this world a better place than she found it. I first met Elaine as one of members who signed up for Lewis Howes' School of Greatness Academy. I have watched her grow her start up business and her company Neon Owl is something to watch out for if you are into Electronic dance music. Elaine has been working slowly but surely over the months and I was blown away with the community she has created in such a short period of time. I wanted to interview Elaine because of her passion to use music as a form to give back to the community. She has purpose and drive that is contagious. She bravely left her 6 figure income to pursue this dream. We dive into how was that transition for her. I ask her questions that could also help musicians and singers build upon their business, such as using services like Thunder clap, Indigogo to help build awareness for your music. We chat about how she reaches out to influencers and builds her networks so her message can be heard. Here are my questions: Tell us about your company Neon Owl. You mentioned that you love music even through you don’t play an instrument, how did you develop the concept of Neon Owl and how did it come about? Many people are afraid of charting into new territory how did you make the transition of leaving your 6 figure corporate job into diving into creating your dream job Tell us about Thunder clap and how you use it to promote your cause?  How can a musician, performer or singer use Thunderclap for their advantage? You have been really proactive in reaching out to influencers or people who are doing so well in the dance genre- what are some of the steps you have taken to build relationships with them in such a short period of time. I think it would be beneficial for my audience to grasp the concept of networking and building rapport with people in their networks. What is in the pipelines for you?
