Jay taps into the question so many people quietly carry: “Is this really what I’m meant to do?” With honesty and clarity, he challenges the myths we’ve been taught about purpose, that it’s a single calling, that passion comes first, or that clarity arrives before action. Instead, Jay reframes purpose as something you build through curiosity, experimentation, and small, consistent steps. He reminds us that most people aren’t lost, they’re avoiding what they already know because of what it might cost. Jay offers a practical framework for finding direction. He points to the things that come naturally, what deeply moves or frustrates you, the challenges you’ve lived through, and even who you envy as signals worth paying attention to. These aren’t random, they’re clues guiding you toward the work that’s truly aligned with you. The message is simple but powerful: stop waiting for certainty, start moving, and trust that clarity comes through action. In this episode you'll find: How to Find Your Purpose How to Turn Passion Into Purpose How to Start Before You’re Ready How to Overcome Fear of Failure How to Build Confidence Through Action How to Become More Yourself The quiet ideas you keep returning to, the things that light something up inside you, the dreams you keep pushing aside, they matter for a reason. Start where you are, with what you have, and trust that clarity often comes after action, not before it. What if the dreams you thought you missed the deadline on are the ones you're meant to follow now?Becca Kidwell spent her 30s teaching high school English, convinced it was too late to pursue a creative career. She'd learned what so many of us Gen X women can relate to: if you didn't lock in your path by 30, the door was closed. But then something shifted and she started noticing older artists who were just beginning their careers and thriving. She met her now-husband, who encouraged her to move to New York and start a theater company, and on her 40th birthday, she performed her first cabaret show.Ten years later, Becca is releasing her debut album, What You Don't See, on her 50th birthday. And the title track? It's about something so many of us feel in midlife but rarely say out loud: I'm tired. I'm tired of performing, of smiling through exhaustion, of pretending I have endless capacity. But what you don't see is how tired I really am.In this Story Session, Becca shares her journey from being afraid of being seen to stepping fully onto the stage as herself. We talk about the permission piece that midlife gives so many of us, the resilience it takes to keep showing up for your dreams, and why creativity isn't just for the young. If you've ever felt like it's too late to follow a passion, chase a dream, or try something new, this episode is for you.Related Episodes:Episode 160: Season 5 Finale: The Midlife Glow-Up You Didn't See ComingEpisode 81: Unlocking the Joy of Creativity in Midlife with Meryl CookGuest Bio: Becca Kidwell is a singer-songwriter and cabaret performer from New York. I had the absolute joy of talking with my friend, Valerie Tabor Smith — one of the most published children's photographers in the world and a pro at art licensing.Valerie's career is fascinating. She began in wedding photography, discovered her love for babies and children, and eventually built an international licensing business with her images appearing on greeting cards, calendars, and products around the globe. Her work has even been displayed at EPCOT, and she received the prestigious Steuben Trophy from Kodak. But what I love most about this conversation isn't just the accolades — it's Valerie's honesty about reinvention, rejection, persistence, and staying true to your creative heart. We talk about how she moved from black and white hand-tinted portraits into color work, how a calendar company first “discovered” her images, and what photographers today can learn about breaking into commercial and licensing markets.Valerie shared so much, including        •       How she broke into art licensing (and handled rejection)        •       The evolving world of greeting cards, calendars, and product design        •       Why following your passion is still the smartest business strategy We also talk about balancing creativity with family life, how the industry has shifted for women photographers, and the incredible opportunities that still exist in commercial photography for those willing to pursue them. This episode is part inspiration, part history lesson, and part encouragement to trust your artistic voice. And as always, I'm cheering you on as you build a business that is not only profitable… but deeply aligned with who you are.To connect with her valeriesviews1@gmail.comhttps://www.valerietaborsmith.com/Connect with Photography Business Coach Luci Dumas: Website Email: luci@lucidumas.comInstagram FacebookYouTubeNew episodes drop every week — make sure to subscribe so you never miss an inspiring guest or a powerful solo episode designed to help you grow your photography business.

"I'll be happy when..." - Life is short. Refuse to not be happy NOW.2. Purpose - Your job doesn't need a white hat to have purpose.3. Follow your passion - The "live, laugh, love" tattoo of career advice.4. Balance - We need alignment, not balance. Code-switching is exhausting.Need to Make vs Want to Make Numbers:We all have two numbers. Need to make: bills, food, school. Want to make: Claridge's vs Holiday Inn, Rolls Royce vs Hyundai. In between are the sacrifices you'll make.Caroline's Story:Laura wanted to promote her to VP. Caroline said no thank you. She'd just had a baby and wanted to be present. Three years later, she got promoted. Still with the firm 10 years after Laura sold it.Eleanor Roosevelt: "We would worry much less about what other people thought about us if we realised how seldom they did."Whose Goal Is This?We define success at 17-18 before our frontal lobe is fully formed. Laura dropped out of law school - it was her fourth grade teacher's goal, not hers. Give yourself grace to change.Work-Life Alignment > Balance:You're friends with coworkers on social media. It's already integrated. Stop separating work and life. Find alignment instead. Code-switching is exhausting.Feeling Seen vs Feeling Loved:Laura's therapy revelation: She felt loved transactionally (got grades = we love you). But did she feel seen? Could she have said "I don't want law school, I want to be an artist"?Key Insights:"I refuse to not be happy NOW. It's time to call it out. ‘Following your passion' is poor career advice.Today, I'm talking about how this common cliché can hold you back in your career and what to focus on instead. One of my most popular podcast episodes to date is about how to find your passion. This tells me it's a topic many people are thinking about -- and one that comes up often in my work with high-achieving leaders.I stand by the practical tips shared in this episode. They'll support you to explore potential career paths you're curious about, identify what you want next and find work aligned to your strengths and interests. Yet I'm noticing a lot of individuals putting pressure on themselves to ‘find their passion' or ONE dream job. And all it's doing is creating overwhelm and stopping them from moving forward. So I want to change the dialogue around ‘following your passion'.Is it important to do work you love? Yes!And is it possible to find work which lights you up? 100%. It's what I help my clients do every day. But the advice to ‘follow your passion' can be unhelpful -- and often, discouraging. In this episode, I'm sharing five reasons WHY -- and what to do instead. You'll discover how to intentionally design a fulfilling career which ‘works' for you! You'll learn:Why trying to ‘find your passion' is unhelpful when you're confused about your career direction -- and how to start exploring what meaningful work looks like to YOUThe problem with trying to monetise EVERY passion and how to know when your interests belong outside workThe first step to flip the focus from ‘following your passion' to creating a career that's fulfilling and sustainableHow neuroscience explains why prioritising your passions limits your potential -- and the ONE quality you need to unearth new possibilitiesPractical ways to move from ‘research mode' into action, so you can find clarity on your directionSo hit play NOW -- and let's dive in!Thanks for listening. Drawing from Genesis 1, Reformed anthropology, and the legacy of Kuyper, Bahnsen argues that work is not a mere means to consumption or status, but an essential expression of our identity as image-bearers of God. The discussion also addresses pressing contemporary questions—from the pitfalls of “work–life balance” and “follow your passion” mantras, to the theological problems with universal basic income and the cultural obsession with consumption. Listeners will be encouraged to see their daily labor as an act of worship, anticipating the greater work of the new creation secured in Christ. Passion is powerful, but it doesn't always lead to profit. In today's episode, we're diving into a topic that many entrepreneurs and creatives struggle with—why simply following your passion might not be the best strategy for building a sustainable business. Yes, passion can be the spark that ignites your journey. It can fuel your hustle during the early stages, keeping you motivated and energized. But here's the reality: passion alone won't always pay the bills or put food on the table for you and your family. Relying solely on what you love to do—without a plan, market validation, or a monetization strategy—can leave you burnt out and broke. Today, I'm introducing a fresh perspective on how to pursue your passion with purpose that will have you rethinking the 'follow your passion' advice—and replace it with something that works in the real world. Brighton, U.K. based ceramicist, Nicola Gillis makes functional tableware. Nicola takes inspiration from the East Asian use of tableware, a specific purpose for each vessel and where pleasure is drawn from individuality. Although there are commonalities, she does not seek to replicate exact size or marks and embraces imperfection. Shadows and light on daily walks throughout the seasons and the beauty found in degraded surfaces and patina also inform her work. Nicola has developed her interest in ceramics over the past 8 years, studying on the full-time Ceramic Development course at Forest Row School of Ceramics in 2019, and beginning to sell her work in during 2020. Initially using the wheel, Nicola developed her practice to include hand-building with slabs, carving, and coils, all of which she finds to be a slower, more thoughtful approach to making. https://ThePottersCast.com/1123

I absolutely LOVED this week's episode. Not only was Louise Galvin extremely sound to chat to and I left wanting to be her pal, she was so open and honest and candid about how she and her husband manage parenting. Louise, for those unfamiliar, is one of Ireland's most successful sports stars – playing at senior level with the Kerry football team, playing in the Rugby 7s World Cup AND as the captain of a National Cup winning basketball team. She probably made GAA history when, following one of her particularly important semi-final matches, Louise ran off the pitch to breastfeed her baby just as the final whistle blew, making her the first player to breastfeed in the dressing rooms at Croke Park. Louise has a three year old son and twin babies who are not even five months yet, and she's making sure she makes time to be match fit to catch the end of the football season. I for one was in awe listening to her tell me all this, while she was just taking it totally in her stride, making it clear that she doesn't get mam guilt because she knows her sport is an important part of who she is and an important example to set for her three children. I think you will love this episode as much as I did – and I'll be back next week with more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ever wonder what true wealth is? In today's episode, I sit down with Scott Galloway, a fierce thinker, NYU professor, and one of the most influential voices on business, technology, and modern society. Scott pulls no punches as he redefines what it means to be truly wealthy—and why it goes beyond the numbers most people think about. Together, we confront the gap between appearances and actual financial security, touching on the lifestyle traps that can lead high-earners to economic stress, while those who live strategically build lasting wealth. Scott and I also dig into the concept of following your passion. For all the young people out there, Scott makes a compelling case for honing your talents in practical fields, building toward mastery rather than just "following dreams." We're breaking down what it really takes to succeed in a world that loves glamorizing the "overnight success" without showing the grit behind it. We also tackle the future of artificial intelligence and what it means for today's workforce. Scott warns us that AI itself isn't the enemy, but ignoring its potential impact on every job market could be. For anyone worried about the future, his advice is simple but profound—learn the tools of the new economy so you're always ahead of the curve. Finally, we take a hard look at some tough societal issues, from the challenges facing young men today to the influence of social media on youth mental health. Scott's unapologetic take on the need for positive male role models, community involvement, and emotional resilience is a wake-up call to us all.
