Brighton, U.K. based ceramicist, Nicola Gillis makes functional tableware. Nicola takes inspiration from the East Asian use of tableware, a specific purpose for each vessel and where pleasure is drawn from individuality. Although there are commonalities, she does not seek to replicate exact size or marks and embraces imperfection. Shadows and light on daily walks throughout the seasons and the beauty found in degraded surfaces and patina also inform her work. Nicola has developed her interest in ceramics over the past 8 years, studying on the full-time Ceramic Development course at Forest Row School of Ceramics in 2019, and beginning to sell her work in during 2020. Initially using the wheel, Nicola developed her practice to include hand-building with slabs, carving, and coils, all of which she finds to be a slower, more thoughtful approach to making. https://ThePottersCast.com/1123
I absolutely LOVED this week's episode. Not only was Louise Galvin extremely sound to chat to and I left wanting to be her pal, she was so open and honest and candid about how she and her husband manage parenting. Louise, for those unfamiliar, is one of Ireland's most successful sports stars – playing at senior level with the Kerry football team, playing in the Rugby 7s World Cup AND as the captain of a National Cup winning basketball team. She probably made GAA history when, following one of her particularly important semi-final matches, Louise ran off the pitch to breastfeed her baby just as the final whistle blew, making her the first player to breastfeed in the dressing rooms at Croke Park. Louise has a three year old son and twin babies who are not even five months yet, and she's making sure she makes time to be match fit to catch the end of the football season. I for one was in awe listening to her tell me all this, while she was just taking it totally in her stride, making it clear that she doesn't get mam guilt because she knows her sport is an important part of who she is and an important example to set for her three children. I think you will love this episode as much as I did – and I'll be back next week with more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In episode #293, we welcome good friend of The Coaches Site, Dave Smith. Two days before we were scheduled to record this podcast he notified us that he had been relieved of his duties as the Head Coach of RPI. Despite that, he agreed to join the pod with his only request being that we focus on the future and the positive experiences he enjoyed during his eight season's leading the RPI program. Previous to his time with RPI Smith spent 12 seasons as Head Coach at Canisius College. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Coach for seven seasons split between Miami University (Ohio), Bowling Green, and Mercyhurst. He is now going to start a new chapter in his coaching journey and will again relish in the opportunity to build and lead a team. We hope that this conversation will give other coaches hope and help them navigate the curveballs that the game throws at them. Listen as he shares the message he left his players with after being let go, why the royal road has changed offensive hockey, and why it all starts with following you passion.

Ever wonder what true wealth is? In today's episode, I sit down with Scott Galloway, a fierce thinker, NYU professor, and one of the most influential voices on business, technology, and modern society. Scott pulls no punches as he redefines what it means to be truly wealthy—and why it goes beyond the numbers most people think about. Together, we confront the gap between appearances and actual financial security, touching on the lifestyle traps that can lead high-earners to economic stress, while those who live strategically build lasting wealth. Scott and I also dig into the concept of following your passion. For all the young people out there, Scott makes a compelling case for honing your talents in practical fields, building toward mastery rather than just "following dreams." We're breaking down what it really takes to succeed in a world that loves glamorizing the "overnight success" without showing the grit behind it. We also tackle the future of artificial intelligence and what it means for today's workforce. Scott warns us that AI itself isn't the enemy, but ignoring its potential impact on every job market could be. For anyone worried about the future, his advice is simple but profound—learn the tools of the new economy so you're always ahead of the curve. Finally, we take a hard look at some tough societal issues, from the challenges facing young men today to the influence of social media on youth mental health. Scott's unapologetic take on the need for positive male role models, community involvement, and emotional resilience is a wake-up call to us all. Key Takeaways: True Wealth: Why wealth is about security, not salary, and how to focus on what really matters. Practical Passion: The balance between passion and talent, and how to build a career that sustains both. AI Advantage: How to future-proof your career by mastering the essentials of AI. Building Strong Men: The importance of male mentorship and community in shaping resilient young men. Social Media's Toll: The hidden costs of social media on youth mental health and what to do about it. This episode isn't just an interview; it's an education in life strategy. This is a clip from a podcast that I did last year. In it, I discuss why following your passion is the wrong way to do business. Instead, you should think about business more like a poker player that has to take calculated bets with the cards that you are dealt. You need to take the emotion out of business and chase opportunity now and your passions later. It's a giant marshmallow test where you have delay gratification to get what you really want.
