I had a second great conversation on Keepin It Real w/Caramel Podcast "As We Say 100" with Jennifer Anne Gordon. Jennifer and I spoke back in 2021. It was great to catch up with her to see what she has going on. Jennifer is very funny and amazing to speak with, and by the end of our conversation, we both decided we will have a comedy tour sponsored by our publicist, Mickey Mikkelson. Now, all about Jennifer Anne Gordon - Jennifer is an award-winning author and popular host of the Vox Vomitus podcast. Her novel Beautiful Frightening and Silent won the Kindle Award for Best Horror/Suspense for 2020, Best Horror 2020 from Authors on the Air, and was a finalist for American Book Fest's Best Book Award- Horror, 2020. It also received the Platinum 5 Star Review from Reader's Choice as well as the Gold Seal from Book View. Her latest novel Pretty/Ugly won the Helicon Award for Best Horror for 2022, the Kindle Award for Best Novel of the Year (Reader's Choice), as well as the Gold Medal from Literary Titan. Jennifer is a member of Mystery Writers of America, the Horror Writers Association (where she serves on a jury for the Stoker Awards) and is the Agents and Editors chair of the New England Crime Bake Committee. The Japanese Box horror novel is the newest collection for Jennifer. A SYNOPSIS ABOUT THE BOOK: Simulacrum is a dark comedic tale about college life and love. It is the story of what happens when two sociopaths attend art exhibits, drink lemon vodka, and spar over everything and anything. Periods. Coloring books. Art. This is the story of our unnamed narrator... an origin story of a would-be, hopes to be, serial killer. The Japanese Box is a story that blends memoir, creative nonfiction, and the horror of a coming-of age story, and a coming of middle-aged story. Imagine growing up with a reflection that is often absent and a Japanese box that is filled with things that should never have been there. Memories. Violence. The Japanese Box is a love letter to anxiety, trauma, grief, and longing. It is a story of a child becoming an adult and all the ghosts and misfortunes that happen in order to survive. The Lithium Moon: Simone is an artist by day and an emotionally abused wife at night. She is a successful artist with a long history of schizoid effective disorder with bipolar tendencies. When her marriage goes from good to bad, she suffers her first miscarriage. The tragedy coincides with a wolf moon-trauma, and magic converge seems to converge in Simone's head. This story explores sadness, illness, hallucinations, full moons, and the creative process. What stage of grief is not a poem, or a song, but a dirge. Fantasy and facts, this poem walks a fine line between nightmares and memories. Grief stories and lovestories. Dogs and drama. Nightmares, and nevermore. The book is available worldwide in digital and paperback formats or at The Japanese Box and Other Stories: Gordon, Jennifer Anne: 9798986845135: Amazon.com: Books The Japanese Box and Other Stories: Gordon, Jennifer Anne: 9798986845135: Books - Amazon.ca - For more information you can visit her website at www.JenniferAnneGordon.com or you can go to any social media and follow Jennifer Anne Gordon. The precision of observation here speaks not only to the honesty of the writer, but to the respect granted in all phases of life; Jennifer Anne Gordon is on full display. Smart, full of character, vibrant. You will feel, you will feel big, and you will return, too, to the richest moments of your own history, landmarks that bring you to both smile and weep. –Josh Malerman New York Times best-selling author of Bird Box and Daphne I compulsively read anything Jennifer Anne Gordon writes. Like the best contemporary filmmakers stitching together grief and horror, her storytelling is a sharp needle that both pierces and tugs us close. Compulsive and genre-slashing, with exquisite, rhythmic prose, THE JAPANESE BOX is an extraordinary exploration of alone-ness that beats and breathes: grief is horror, grief is love. We as readers are drawn ever closer to this beautifully haunted narrator until we're face-down in the box with her. Does she feel us? She thinks she is alone. We all think we are alone. By the end we've become the ghosts in her black room, reaching out to gently touch her hair and whisper we're here. -Diane Zinna, author of The All-Night Sun From the author of the Kindle Award Winning Novel for Best Horror 2020 —Beautiful, Frightening, and Silent—and Pretty/Ugly— Winner of The Kindle Award for Best Novel 2022 (Reader's Choice) comes a collection of short stories contemplating horror, grief, and trauma. Episode 94 Bio: https://www.maycobb.com/ My upcoming thriller, MY SUMMER DARLINGS will be released from Berkley/Penguin Random House on May 17th, 2022. My previous thriller, THE HUNTING WIVES, is now available everyone where books are sold! My debut thriller, BIG WOODS, won multiple awards and was released summer 2018. I'm currently finishing a book about the late, jazz great, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a project which has been in the works for twenty years. Kirk was a human phenomenon—a multi-instrumentalist who was best known for his miraculous ability to play three saxophones simultaneously. During his brief life, he defied staggering odds—from blindness, to prejudice, to a paralyzing stroke—in order to play the music that came to him through dreams. His story is what made me want to become a writer. I grew up in the piney woods of East Texas where both THE HUNTING WIVES and BIG WOODS are set. After college, I moved to San Francisco where I studied Victorian Literature for my Master's, and gravitated towards that era's detective novels, known as "sensation novels", such as Wilke Collins' THE WOMAN IN WHITE. I then lived in Los Angeles for a few years where I worked for filmmaker/writer Ron Shelton and his wife, the actress Lolita Davidovich. I currently live in Austin, Texas, with my husband and son where we enjoy traipsing around the area's many beautiful parks. I also enjoy napping, staring into space, making to-do lists for my to-do lists, shoveling cookies down my throat when I'm writing a particularly difficult scene (and even when I'm not), wearing my PJ's as often as I can get away with and collapsing into bed at the end of a day with a great book. She was a staff editor at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Good Housekeeping and InStyle. In 2010 she sold her first novel, The Crown, to the Touchstone imprint of Simon & Schuster. A thriller set in Tudor England, it was an Oprah magazine pick and nominated for the Crime Writers Association's Ellis Peters Historical Dagger Award. She wrote two more books featuring the same main character, a Dominican novice named Joanna Stafford. With her fourth novel, a standalone thriller set in the 18th century art world titled The Blue, she told a story of espionage and obsession with the most beautiful color in the world. In creating Genevieve, the Huguenot artist who goes undercover in a porcelain factor, she drew on her own background. Nancy is descended French Huguenot Pierre Billiou, who came to what was then New Amsterdam in 1665 and built a stone house on Staten Island. It's the third oldest house in New York State. Nancy is now turning her writing talent to creating novels set in the New York City of the past. For her fifth novel, Dreamland, she spent time in Coney Island and was assisted by the staff at the Coney Island Museum. She also did research at the New York Public Library, the New York Historical Society, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Brooklyn Historical Society. J.C. Paulson thinks a mystery can — perhaps should — also be a love story. Switching from fact (journalism) to fiction, it seemed a natural thing to combine the two. Evil versus good. Hate versus love. Think Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, and a host of cozy mystery couples — not that her first four novels, Adam's Witness, Broken Through, Fire Lake and Griffin's Cure, are all that cozy. A rabid reader of mystery novels, J.C. Paulson has long admired the works of Dorothy Sayers, P.D. James, Louise Penny and Ann Cleeves. She lives in a rambling bungalow on a quiet street in Saskatoon, Canada with her husband, Ken, a goldsmith. She therefore wears tiny golden replicas of her murder weapons around her neck. https://www.jcpaulsonwriter.com/ VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. https://www.edwin-hill.com/ Edwin is the Edgar- and Agatha-award nominated author of three novels in the Hester Thursby series: Little Comfort, The Missing Ones, and Watch Her. He was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and spent most of his childhood obsessing over The Famous Five, Agatha Christie, and somehow finding a way into C.S. Lewis's wardrobe. His parents were fond of taking his sister and him on month-long family camping trips across the U.S. and Canada, and one of his best memories is of finishing a copy of The Seven Dials Mystery while the rest of the family visited Mount Rushmore. Growing up when VHS tapes were new meant that watching Alien, Jaws, The Shining, or Halloween whenever he wanted seemed luxurious, and still does today. Like Hester Thursby, he watched these movies – and others like them – a lot. After attending Wesleyan University and graduating with a B.A. in American Studies, he headed west to San Francisco for the dotcom boom. Later, he returned to Boston, earned an MFA from Emerson College, and switched gears to work in educational publishing. He served as the vice president and editorial director for Bedford/St. Martin's, a division of Macmillan Learning for many years before turning to writing full time. He lives in Roslindale, Massachusetts with his partner Michael and his favorite reviewer, their lab Edith Ann, who likes his first drafts enough to eat them. A lot of people helped him create this series, and he is a big believer in paying forward. Don't be a stranger. https://www.mariesutro.com Marie Sutro was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, which served as the setting for her debut novel, Dark Associations. As soon as she learned to read, she developed an insatiable appetite for books. With each new story, Marie became more fascinated with the transformative power of words. The magic she discovered in those printed pages sparked an ardent desire to write, which continues to this day. Marie remains committed to sharing the knowledge that has brought so much joy to her life. She volunteers with California Library Literacy Services, helping adults improve their reading and writing skills. Marie is also a member of Sisters in Crime, where she has served on the Board of her local chapter. Dark Associations, was released on January 10, 2017, and made the Amazon Best-Seller list. In April of 2018, Marie was awarded the IBPA Ben Franklin Gold Award for Best New Voice in Fiction. The story is inspired by family history - her great-grandfather, grandfather and father, all having served in the San Francisco Police Department. Marie resides in Northern California with her husband. They live under the loving reign of three well-loved cats who specialize in pioneering inventive ways to energize the home office environment. Her new novel, Dark Obsessions, is scheduled for release on April 26, 2022. VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. Bio: A graduate of Florida State University, I presently reside in Atlanta Georgia with my partner. By day, I serve as Vice President of Easter Seals North Georgia, Inc., a non-profit organization strengthening children and their families at the most critical times in their development. Through my non-profit work, I am a champion for early childhood literacy. In all the hours between, I write. Raised alongside three feral, younger brothers in the rash-inducing, subtropical climate of Cairo Georgia, I am a lifelong resident of the South. A circumstance, no doubt, leaving an indelible mark upon my voice as a writer. Aside from sense of place, my writing is influenced and inspired by the literary work of others. As a boy, it was with great obsession, I turned the well-worn pages of Charlotte Brontë's, Jane Eyre. Wuthering Heights? Yes, another source of adoration. And Truman Capote's debut novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, I admire with equal reverence along with everything ever written by Tennessee Williams. Charles Dickens' Miss Havisham is one of my all-time favorite characters. Many hours I spent playing her, wrapped in an old lace tablecloth borrowed from my mother's linen closet—my tattered, makeshift wedding dress. Locked away in my boyhood room, I haunted the place, plotting revenge, shooing rats from the wedding cake. “Break their hearts my pride and hope, break their hearts and have no mercy,” I would whisper into the impressionable ear of my lovely Estella. Break their hearts. As an adult, my literary palate is diverse, reading everyone from the sublime Michael Cunningham to the gifted Jesmyn Ward to the incomparable Ron Rash. Though my tastes have evolved through the years, one constant remains: the impact of literature and art and music upon my writing. And my unrelenting quest to make and find beauty in this world. https://robertlgwaltney.com VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong.
