For the second episode of the Taiwanology podcast, we hopped on a plane and took a trip to India. The 3 Commonwealth reporters Elaine Huang, Andy Yang and Peiying Hsieh visited India to get insights into the Indian Electronic Manufacturing Industry, and especially the working conditions of Foxconn in India. Recently, India is becoming increasingly important for international electronic manufacturers, partly due to its low labour costs, partly due to rising manufacturing costs in China. Numerous international corporations are investing in India to build new factories. Above all, Foxconn, the largest manufacturer of iPhones globally. Together with Vedanta, Foxconn is investing $20 billion in the Indian state of Gujarat to build a gigantic semiconductor manufacturing facility. Further investments into India might follow over the next few years and Foxconn could create thousands, if not hundred of thousands of new jobs in India. Andy, Elaine and Peiying also met with workers at a current Foxconn facility in India. They even had the opportunity to visit one worker's home. Everything about Taiwanese investments in the Indian Electronics Manufacturing industry in this episode! Episode 405 – Ahead of the pack   Today we have Rachel.   She is 29, from Wisconsin, and took her last drink on September 4, 2022.   Registration for Restore opens December 1. https://www.recoveryelevator.com/restore/   Sponsor:  https://www.soberlink.com/   Highlights from Paul   Is there a stigma for those in recovery, or are we ahead of the pack? This past August, Paul invited Elaine Huang  mindfulness and spirituality teacher) to speak at the RE Bozeman retreat. Elaine shared with Paul that those ditching the booze are ahead of the pack. She never has to modify or simply her course content for Café RE members. Members of our group are advanced students; they are more resilient, elite, and have a greater capacity for love and a greater capacity for recovery after pain & suffering. Elaine referred to us as “old souls .”The recovery community has a greater capacity for survival, compassion, and love.    Elaine believes our population is part of the 1% of people who can achieve a higher level of consciousness, vibration, and frequency:  the frequency of love.   Feel free to watch this video from a neuroscientist, Dr. Joe Dispenza. https://youtu.be/Ov3aeqjeih0   Deepak Chopra says, “it takes as little as 1% of a population to create positive change, and I believe that if 100 million people underwent a personal transformation in the direction of peace, harmony, laughter, love, kindness, and joy...the world would be transformed.”   Transcendental Meditation teacher Maharishi Mahesh predicted that only one percent of humanity is needed to create enough good vibrations to usher in world peace.  (https://www.naturalawakenings.com/2018/11/30/224480/a-global-wake-up-call-collective-consciousness-nears-spiritual-tipping-point)   For more information on Elaine Huang:  Elaine Huang - Embodiment of Freedom: https://www.mayyouawaken.com/   Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored                                                                               [12:30]    Rachel has been sober for over thirty days. She is still struggling and hasn't experienced a pink cloud yet. She is experiencing a lot of depersonalization, but she is hopeful. She loves singing, live music, nature, hiking, and playing the ukulele. Rachel struggles with PTSD. She has a partner and two kids.    Rachel identifies with the gifted kid burnout syndrome. She excelled in school but struggled to embrace her feelings, given some of her struggles at home. She was high functioning in high school: in clubs and the National Honor Society. As a DARE kid, she was afraid of drugs and alcohol. She described having a second life and drinking to impress people. Rachel believed alcohol helped her to fit in. She graduated from high school early and traveled to India. She had to abstain in India. When she went to college, drinking was a social lubricant.   She went to work drunk and high. Rachel described drinking as letting out a sigh.    Pregnancies led Rachel to a sober stint. She was doing well until the pandemic hit. Rachel's rock bottom moment was blacking out while reading a bedtime story to her daughter. Since her father and grandfather struggled with addictions, she decided it was time for the addiction cycle to end.   Singing, yoga, and cold exposure spike Rachel's dopamine which helps her maintain her sobriety. Rachel is mindful of potential relapse and knows that self-compassion is essential.    [50:48] Paul's Summary   Paul wonders if the stigma exists. We yearn for authenticity, and when we connect, that authenticity is reciprocated. The stigma is often in our minds. People in recovery make lasting changes that can influence others to do the same.   Upcoming events, retreats, and courses: You can find more information about our events   Resources Connect with Cafe RE - Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee. She was born in Chinatown, San Francisco but she was sent to live with her grandparents in China from age 1-5. Then she returned to San Francisco to start Kindergarten. Elaine was taught traditional Chinese values however, she grew up in a very non-traditional Chinese home, because her father didn't go down a traditional path because he was a former "gangster" turned struggling entrepreneur. Because of this, her childhood was full of judgement from her extended family and personal trauma at home. Her family had to be secretive and she wasn't allowed a normal childhood. She wasn't allowed to attend birthday parties and unlike most kids, she would never want to leave school because that was her "safe place to escape."Elaine went from being "invisible" as a child and always wanting to be the "peacemaker" to an angry, rebellious teenager, as she puts it, her "Eminem Girl" phase. Elaine was eventually able to discover the root of her calling in activism at the young age of 16, when her younger brother was falsely accused of a crime and was sent to juvenile hall. Elaine used her fire and passion to help people and was able to fight for him and set her innocent brother free. However, everything changed her Senior year when the family was uprooted to Sacramento.Elaine lost her community, friends, and ability to participate in activism. Having to start over Elaine ended up getting to a few toxic relationships and although she was easily accepted into UC Davis, she found herself failing in school and lost her financial aid. Afraid to tell her parents, she had to work 3 jobs and live a secret life until she got an internship that changed her life. She realized she was not made for school and was an entrepreneur at heart. She ended up working her way up to VP in just a few short years with her the company. She was in talks for a partner position at the age of 26, however she knew she was created to make a bigger impact on her own terms. She turned down the offer and started Neon Owl with her brother. This motivated Elaine to set onto her journey of self-discovery and entrepreneurship. She talks about her solo cross country drive, where her love for New York came from and why she loves electronic music festivals such as EDC and Nocturnal Wonderland, which was the inspiration for Neon Owl.This was an exciting and lesson filled episode. Rose took her last drink on March 12, 2019.  This is her story. Update on the Alcohol is Sh!t book!  The book is out!  Pick up your copy on Amazon here!  On today’s episode Paul talks about Recovery Elevator Bozeman Retreat that took place this past August.  One of the speakers at the retreat was a spiritual teacher that Paul has worked with, Elaine Huang, you can find out more about her here.   And a BIG thank you to the sponsors of the retreat.  Nutzo, an organic 7-nut seed butter, that provided a jar of said butter to everyone that attended! Rise Brewing Co., provided Nitro Cold Brewed Coffee! Fire Brew, an apple cider-based health tonic, provided shots for everyone! And tajín, a seasoning blend of lime, chili peppers and sea salt, provided a bottle of zing for all! The cool thing is that these sponsors wanted to be a part of this event.  Thank you to Odette who worked hard in setting it all up!  SHOW NOTES   [22:20] Paul introduces Rose.    Rose is 37 years old.  She is from New Zealand but is currently living in France.  Rose is a physiotherapist by trade, but her degree is not recognized yet in France so she is teaching English.  She is a newlywed and they have a 3-year-old son.  For fun Rose likes to cook, sing, be outdoors, and go to gigs.      [25:20] Give us a background on your drinking.   Rose started drinking as a teenager.  She says she grew up in a loving family but that everyone was a boozer, that it was normal.    At 18 she went off to university but dropped out after 2 years because it was getting in the way of her drinking.  She moved cities in search of new drinking friends and for the next 5 years was in an abusive relationship.  Rose says she spent a good chunk of her 20’s getting out of, and recovering from, that relationship.    Rose then spent time on a friend’s large sailing boat and sailed to Fiji, continuing her drinking.  She then went home and started studying to become a physiotherapist.  Rose says she slowed her drinking down while she was studying.    [28:25] What happens next?    Rose got her degree, got a great job in a hospital where she wanted to work.  In 2016 she had her son.  She says after the birth of her son she fell into the ‘mommy drinking’ culture.  Rose also started to feel like an imposter.  Promoting health at work but doing the very opposite personally.       [32:20] Was there anything in particular that led you to ditch the booze?   Rose says a big part of it was moving to France in 2017.  She found France’s drinking culture to be the polar opposite of New Zealand’s which made her feel out of place.  Even though she knew she needed to stop her drinking ramped up at the beginning of this year after the death of a close friend.     [35:15] What happened on March 12th?    Rose says she had started to drink during the daytime, when she wasn’t on pick-up duty with her son.  She also started smoking cigarettes.  She started feeling guilty about not being present as a parent.  She reached out to an American friend she had met on that sailing ship that was posting about being sober.  This friend led her to Café RE.    [38:50] How did you do it?   Rose says she told her husband, creating some accountability.  Her husband was very supportive.  The removed all the alcohol from the house and Rose declined engagements for a while.  She joined Café RE and jumped in and starting participating and getting involved.    [48:50] How have things changed in an alcohol-free life?   Rose says she’s a better mother, she’s present.  She has an increase in self-love and self-worth.    [55:05] Rapid Fire Round     What is your favorite alcohol-free drink?   Pineapple and lime sparkling water.    What are some of your favorite resources in recovery?     I loved The Joy of Being Sober book.    I also really love Josh Korda’s Dharmapunx podcast.   There is a New Zealand woman named Lotta Dann and she has a book, and blog, by the same name called, Mrs. D is Going Without.    What’s on your bucket list now that alcohol isn’t part of your life?   A lot more travel, I love to travel.  To be able to help someone else get sober.    And what parting piece of guidance can you give to listeners?   Connect, connect with people.  Look for the similarities and not the differences.    You might have a drinking problem if...   You’re drinking wine out of a coffee mug just so the neighbors won’t know because it’s 11 AM on a Monday.      Upcoming retreats: Asia Adventure – January 20-31, 2020 You can find more information about this event here   Resources mentioned in this episode:     Connect with Cafe RE- Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY for your first month free Sobriety Tracker iTunes Sobriety Tracker Android Sober Selfies! - Send your Sober Selfie and your Success Story to info@recoveryelevator.com   “Recovery Elevator – You took the elevator down, you have to take the stairs back up.”

In this episode of Lean the F*ck Out, Gretchen and Tera talk with Elaine Huang, the founder of Neon Owl, a media company and lifestyle brand that focuses on creating positive, inspirational content, while connecting artists and fans to give back to charities around the world. Elaine shares her entrepreneurial journey and how she has built and grown Neon Owl, as well as her coaching and consulting business and Gypsy Social. Elaine is a power house at connecting with people and has some amazing advice on how to kick ass and build your brand, and for those that are just starting out she shares some bonus info on how to choose your direction or passion project. Passion to Profit Episode Highlights Elaine left a six-figure income position to launch Neon Owl.  When deciding on a business focus, ask yourself: What would you do if money wasn’t an issue? “By leading with people and purpose we will all prosper.” At one point Elaine was spending all her energy on building her businesses, often working up to 100 hour a weeks. Neon Owl has volunteers and ambassadors all over the world that now support the business. Some of Elaine’s favorite tools for running her businesses: Google, Slack, Airtable, Wunderlist, Calm App, and paper and pencil. Each morning, write your intentions for the day. Without intentions you cannot receive clear results. As Elaine’s businesses grew she naturally shifted her business to work with others like her: others who wanted to leave corporate and do their own thing. It took Elaine three years to figure out her business model. She did it through adaptation and listening to her customers. “You have to be prepared to get scrappy [if you are going to run your own business].” “Truly think about what you want when you decide to start your own business. Is this something you would create and stay up late nights for, even if you make jack shit?” Continue to surround yourself with other dreamers and doers and keep investing in yourself if you want to turn your passion to profit. Elaine Huang Elaine is the founder of Neon Owl, a media company and lifestyle brand that focuses on creating positive, inspirational content, while connecting artists and fans to give back to charities around the world. In this episode, I chat with Elaine Huang, the founder of Neon Owl, a media company that focuses on bringing positive, inspirational content back into music media, while connecting artists and fans to give back to charities around the world. She left her 6 figure income position as VP to create a life out of passion and purpose, and is now helping others do the same. Her cause is one I can truly get behind, and I really enjoyed our inspiring conversation.  Guest Bio: In short and without being able to avoid sounding cliche, I am complex and more than what meets the eye. I’m a coffee addict that has been a tad bit disappointed about the selection since moving to New York from San Francisco (Philz, Sightglass, and Blue Bottle FTW). I went from making 6 figures at a growing company with the opportunity to make partner, to following my passions with $2,000 in the bank account and no back up plan. With a trunk full of shit, I embarked on a 6 week cross country road trip and move to New York City. My passions revolve around music, travel, adventure, growth, and people. If I only had 2 more years to live, that previous 6 figure income job was not my way of fulfilling my life’s purpose and making this world a better place. It was not my way of being the boldest version of myself and inspiring others to do the same. I’ve been told countless amount of times of my bravery for making such a ballsy move, but have yet to tell my parents back home that I’m gone for good. The holidays are right around the corner, so our Asian gathering with duck, chicken, and seafood will sure be an unsettling one. I’ve spent too much of life caught in between what I wanted to do and what was expected of me, whether it was out of being a good daughter, guilt, or that continuous chase of status and success. One day I woke up and realized my shift in mentality, which must have been boiling into fruition over time (with the help of Darren Hardy and Lewis Howes). To use my obligations towards my college student loans and my parents daughter as a continuous excuse of why I wasn’t following my truest dreams, or to live life to my fullest and worry about the consequences later? After 27 years, I finally chose the latter. It’s not as if I was paying off any of my school loans any faster with my 6 figure income. I was spending it on food, travel, coffee, my shopping addiction, and festivals. As for my parents, well… I guess they’d just have to eventually come around. A happy me eventually leads to a happy them. This is a very American way of thinking, as they have scolded me many times before. But mom and dad, I swear this will pay off. Who am I? I am a red-headed ball of fire that left the good life to chase the great. I didn’t have to travel all the way across the country to make a life out of my passions, but I wanted that extra challenge. They say that if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere, right? Well this firecracker intends to be making it, and leaving this world a better place than she found it.
