Don't miss our conversation with today's amazing guest: Nityda Gessel, LCSW, E-RYT, TIYT, a trauma specialist, Founder of The Trauma-Conscious Yoga Institute℠, and creator of The Trauma-Conscious Yoga Method℠: an integrative healing modality that combines trauma-informed yoga with somatic psychotherapy techniques borrowed from EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems and mindfulness-based therapies. www.traumaconsciousyoga.com
In this talk Nityda discusses the importance of movement for healing and her integration process of Yoga and Social Work. She talks about Yoga philosophy, the influence of African spirituality, and the need to develop skills in action for social justice. We discuss some of the ways in which patriarchy and white supremacy have influenced us and what can we do individually and collectively to heal what is unconscious, with one of the main issues being the lack of inclusivity in the yoga world, with language as a big barrier, and how to minimize the teacher’s position of power in the classroom. We both agree that we require more and more trauma-informed, healing-centered spaces for marginalized groups that need it the most, and she mentions colonization as one of the biggest issue, how descendants of colonizers have a lot of shame and trauma being associated as the oppressor, and how the guru figure arises and is protected by its followers. Nityda is a licensed somatic psychotherapist, yoga teacher, trauma specialist, speaker, writer, and heart-centered activist, working within the intersections of yoga, mental health, embodied activism, and community advocacy. She is the founder of The Trauma-Conscious Yoga Institute (TCYI) and The Trauma-Conscious Yoga Method℠, a healing modality that marries trauma-informed yoga with somatic psychotherapy practices. She facilitates certification trainings in The Trauma-Conscious Yoga Method℠ online and across the U.S. for mental health professionals, yoga teachers, helping professionals, and survivors interested in learning skills to support their resiliency and post-traumatic growth. Welcome to Therapy Chat! In today’s episode, we’re delighted to welcome back trauma specialist and EMDR trained clinician Nityda Gessel. Feeling like a foreigner in your own body is beyond unsettling. Despite your drive and success, it is challenging to feel worthy, comfortable, and at peace within your own skin, and this further exacerbates your fear that you are just not good enough. You might worry that there is no fix for you and you'll feel this way forever. And because to others, you appear to have it all together, it's incredibly lonely to know that inside you there is a longing for love and living that is not being satiated- a pervasive fear that love and joy may never come. Nityda Gessel works with women who due to a traumatic past and overwhelming self-doubt, struggle to cultivate meaningful and fulfilling relationships and feel a sense of purpose in life. Her approach is one that addresses the mind and body as a whole. Nityda integrates somatic awareness, yoga, meditation and mindfulness into psychotherapy. There is a well-spring of wisdom within you that's been neglected. With a compassionate heart and non-judgmental mind, she will help you listen to and trust that wise voice within. A moment of courage can jumpstart a journey toward happiness and lasting peace.
