What if your inability to change habits and reactions wasn't about lack of willpower or being lazy, but was actually about your body not having enough energy to make the change? In this mini episode, Dr. Aimie goes into the biology behind why so many people feel stuck in old patterns or habits, expanding on her conversation with Katie Wells from Episode 123. She answers a question from Jessica, a therapist, about why her clients intellectually understand their problems but can't seem to make changes stick and feel drained after therapy. Dr. Aimie explains how trauma becomes an energy problem in your body. She breaks down what happens inside your cells when trauma gets stored and why healing requires energy that many people simply don't have. You'll hear more about: How trauma affects your body's mitochondria (aka the cellular powerhouses) The warning signs that your energy system is struggling Why feeling exhausted after therapy means your body doesn't have the energy to heal (Hint: You're NOT actually failing!) Simple steps you can take today to boost energy levels naturally If you know what your problems are but can't seem to change them, or if you're helping someone who's stuck in this cycle, this episode offers practical steps that actually work with your biology instead of against it. To hear the full conversation, listen to Episode 123: Light, Sleep, and High-Impact Habits to Heal Your Nervous System

Did you know that your body could literally be "rusting from the inside out" when stuck in trauma? This biological reality explains why so many develop chronic fatigue, autoimmunity, and other mysterious health conditions. In this mini-episode, Dr. Aimie goes into the biology behind why trauma creates chronic illness, building on her discussion from Episode 122 about addressing trauma stored in the body. She answers a listener's question about why her clients seem to struggle with chronic health issues and what can actually be done about it. You'll learn more on: What oxidative stress is (and how being in survival state can cause it to accumulate) Why chronic illness can show up decades after traumatic experiences  Specific steps you can take to reduce oxidative stress A simple technique to shift out of shutdown throughout the day Why talk therapy alone isn't enough If you're struggling with chronic fatigue, autoimmunity, or other unexplained health issues, this episode offers practical insights for addressing these symptoms at the cellular level. Ready to address trauma at the cellular level? Head over to  Episode 122: Shutdown Before Stress for the complete trauma healing sequence, and grab Dr. Aimie's essential resources.

What if we're approaching mental health all wrong? A revolutionary new therapy is debunking popular therapy narratives and changing how we treat anxiety and overthinking. We're continuing our Mental Health Awareness Month series with this introduction to Metacognitive Therapy (MCT), a groundbreaking new approach to treating anxiety, overthinking, OCD, depression, panic attacks, and more, without the usual coping strategies and trauma processing.Unlike traditional talk therapy, Metacognitive Therapy helps people break free from the cycle of worry, rumination, and distress by targeting the way we think about our thoughts — not the thoughts themselves. This is an especially exciting topic for me, as I've been working with the team at metacognitivetherapy.com as the Head Of Content for the past year, creating mental health resources including a website, social media channels, an app and a new podcast that's still to come. Send us a textWe are all under the same Sun. From Praia to Lagos, so much remains the same. It's always fascinated me how much, from Nigeria to Barbados to Jamaica to Angola to Guinea to Mozambique to Haiti to Senegal to Cape Verde, felt like a simulation. All these black men with the same disposition and mannerisms and bluetooths hanging out of their ear. I can't describe to you how funny all these cultures collectively are to me. Separated but you can't hide the roots. But are real conversations actually happening? Are these black men saying, “I'm going through it right now, I'm really struggling with ____”? Not so much that I've seen. We have to give people permission to be themselves sometimes. To say, “you can say how you actually feel and still be manly.” I guess that's one of my missions here. Anyway, Tomi & I sat down to put it on the line & air some dirty laundry. “You can't ruin a true connection by saying how you feel.” I believe that to my core. “The Brothers” (2001) served as the inspo for this one here, hope you enjoy. -WV

Charna explains why talk therapy often fails to create change in trauma recovery, and how physical practices can transform the nervous system in ways cognitive understanding cannot.Charna shares her journey through "boundary bootcamp" at Good Vibrations and her training at the Strozzi Institute. "I really needed physical practice," she says about why ten years of talk therapy created awareness but didn't change her nervous system responses.Throughout the conversation, Charna demonstrates somatic exercises that reveal embodied habits. She explains how our bodies show our patterns under minimal stress and introduces the concept that "until you have an embodied No, you can't have a genuine Yes." Just when she thought the debilitating anxiety of her pregnancy was behind her, Natalie found herself pushed to the brink by insomnia. What began as ten sleepless nights quickly unravelled into terrifying hallucinations and inescapable panic that she would never be able to sleep again. In this raw and deeply moving episode, we sit with Natalie for part two of her story as she reveals the emotional toll of sleep deprivation and divulges one of the most vulnerable moments of her life: the unexpected mental health crisis she faced in early postpartum. With heart-wrenching honesty, Natalie recounts the moment she asked her husband to leave the room so she could confide in the Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (CATT) about her hallucination, the bittersweet decision to separate from her newborn baby in the hopes of finally getting some sleep, the desperation she felt when her prescribed sleeping medication did not work, and the unwavering support of her family as they witnessed the darkest hours of her crisis in the emergency room and the acute mental health ward. This is not just a story of survival. It's a story about the profound difference that compassionate care can make, about the urgent need for better access to mother-and-baby mental health services, and about the importance of breaking the silence around perinatal mental illness. Above all, it's a reminder that in our darkest moments, being held - both physically and emotionally - can be a lifeline. Whether you're a parent, partner, healthcare provider, or simply someone who cares, Natalie's story will stay with you for a long time and show you that there is help, there is hope. Instead of throwing herself into exercising three times a day, working on weekends, starting projects, learning a new skill, doing puzzles, building Lego, or reading, Kristy was confronted by the stillness of motherhood. Then, after nine months of depression, culminating in suicidal ideation, Kristy went to her GP for help, where she was confronted by an unexpected, but enlightening, diagnosis: ADHD. You're not alone. While talk therapy works for many issues, PMDD relationships require a completely different approach – one that provides strategic tools, not just a space to vent about problems.During PMDD Awareness Month, I'm tackling one of the most common frustrations I hear from clients: "We tried therapy but nothing changed." The truth is that most therapists, even excellent ones, simply don't understand the unique challenges of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. They treat PMDD relationship problems like any other relationship issue, missing the cyclical nature of symptoms and the specific tools needed to navigate them.Group counseling designed specifically for PMDD relationships offers what traditional therapy can't. When you join others navigating the same challenges, something powerful happens – you realize you're not alone, you learn from others' experiences, and you gain access to tools created specifically for PMDD's unique patterns. Instead of just talking about your problems, you receive practical strategies to stop the PMDD breakup cycle, communicate effectively during the luteal phase, and transform how you and your partner respond to symptoms. The most transformative aspect of group work is breaking the isolation. Many people hide the true impact of PMDD from friends and family for fear of judgment, creating a lonely struggle. In a dedicated PMDD group, you no longer have to explain what PMDD is or justify how it affects you – everyone already gets it. This shared understanding creates a foundation for real healing and growth.Ready to transform your approach to PMDD? Join us for the PMDD Power Couples Group Counseling Membership starting April 8th. For PMDD Awareness Month, I'm offering a special rate of just $49 (regularly $149) to make this life-changing support accessible to more couples. Don't let another luteal phase pass without the tools you need!

It's nearly impossible to think about Chloe's story without thinking about all the places where she navigated the worst of her anxiety and melancholic depression: the hospital where she was left parenting in a traumatised body after a retained placenta; the inner-city Sydney suburb where, shockingly, she could not access any maternity support services; her in-law's house on the other side of Sydney where she moved to create a village but could not sleep; and the local esplanade where she pushed the pram and fought against her suicidal ideation every day. That's not even mentioning the emergency department, the short-stay psychiatric emergency care unit, and eventually the mother-and-baby hospital (MBU) where she was admitted for two months, all of which were integral to her story. In each setting, Chloe not only faced unenviable symptoms, but she also had to confront her own unwillingness to ask for help, the lies depression made her believe, her own trauma around electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and the question many MBU mothers grapple with ‘when will it finally be my turn to go home?' This is Chloe's profound story, what she calls her real reckoning and dark night of the soul, that explores the realities of experiencing and recovering from an acute mental health episode in early motherhood. It's a story about losing and finding yourself again in the most unexpected of places, but above all, it's a story about finally coming home. Please note, this episode touches on suicide and suicidal ideation. Go gently.   EPISODE SPONSOR This episode of Perinatal Stories Australia is proudly sponsored by Mums Matter Psychology—because your mental health matters. For those experiencing Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), traditional talk therapy can actually intensify relationship struggles rather than resolve them. Drawing from nearly two decades of personal experience with PMDD and extensive work with couples, I uncover why this seemingly helpful approach often backfires.Words shape reality—this principle lies at the heart of why talk therapy fails PMDD relationships. When you're already battling hormonal fluctuations that trigger negative thoughts about your partner, verbally rehearsing these problems without strategic solutions only reinforces neural pathways of dissatisfaction. Your brain doesn't distinguish between venting and programming—it simply absorbs whatever message you repeatedly deliver. The most dangerous aspect is how talk therapy can create a powerful feedback loop: PMDD focuses you on relationship negatives, therapy encourages expressing these negatives, your brain interprets this as confirmation the relationship is problematic, and well-meaning friends or therapists naturally suggest you should leave. Meanwhile, the underlying PMDD patterns driving these perceptions remain unaddressed.Breaking this cycle requires more than awareness—it demands specific tools designed for PMDD's unique challenges. One powerful technique is creating a "follicular phase letter" documenting what you appreciate about your partner when symptoms subside, then reading it daily during your luteal phase as a concrete reminder of what PMDD temporarily blinds you to. This isn't toxic positivity; it's strategic counterbalancing of PMDD's overwhelming negativity. If you're committed to your relationship but struggling with PMDD's effects, join our PMDD Power Couples community where we combine understanding with practical strategies. Learn to speak what you seek until you see what you spoke—because with the right approach, PMDD doesn't have to dictate your relationship's destiny.

If you've done the healing work but still find yourself battling self-doubt, fear, or questioning whether it really worked—this episode is for you. Penny Chiasson dives deep into the nuances of personal growth, exploring how even well-intended self-improvement efforts can sometimes sabotage success. Have you truly healed, or are you unintentionally reinforcing old patterns? Are you overanalyzing every thought, assuming there's always something "wrong" to fix? Could your personal growth journey be keeping you stuck instead of moving forward? By the end of this episode, you'll learn how to differentiate between random thoughts vs. subconscious patterns, why overanalyzing emotions can work against you, and how to fully step into the identity of success. Your Mind Creates Meaning – Just because a thought pops up doesn't mean it's a deep-seated issue. Learn to identify which thoughts deserve attention and which can be dismissed. The Danger of Overanalyzing – Constantly unpacking every emotion or thought can create unnecessary struggles. Not every passing doubt is a sign that something needs "healing." Healing Requires an Identity Shift – To truly step into a healed version of yourself, you must release the identity of "someone who never gets lasting results." You can't embody healing and also believe “this won't last” at the same time. The Power of Awareness – When negative thoughts arise, how you respond determines everything. A triggered emotional reaction signals unresolved patterns, while neutral curiosity signals growth. Mindfulness = Mental Mastery – The ability to slow down and observe your thoughts in real-time puts you in control of your emotions and outcomes. In this episode of the Homebody Podcast, I explore the multifaceted nature of healing, focusing on the importance of combining body-based practices like somatic therapy with traditional talk therapy. We delve into the limitations of verbalising emotions and explains how somatic therapy addresses stored trauma in the body, highlighting the gut-brain connection, showing how nutrition and gut health play a significant role in emotional wellbeing. Additionally, we discuss the crucial role of light exposure in regulating mood, sleep, and overall mental health. Tune in for practical tips on lifestyle changes and body awareness techniques to enhance your healing journey. Key Takeaways: - Healing involves both intellectual understanding and body-based practices. - Talk therapy can help process thoughts, but it may not create a full body shift in healing. - Somatic therapy addresses emotional trauma stored in the body, facilitating deeper healing. - The limbic system stores emotional experiences, making it difficult to fully process them without body-based work. - Nutrition and gut health have a significant impact on mental and emotional wellbeing. - Morning sunlight exposure is essential for regulating mood and sleep. - Reducing blue light exposure at night can improve sleep quality and mental health. - Breathwork and grounding practices are simple ways to support nervous system regulation. - Combining body-based healing with cognitive processing creates a comprehensive healing plan. - Experimenting with different techniques helps find the ones that resonate most with your healing journey. Dayna's story really gives meaning to the phrase one thing after another. When she birthed her son, there was no golden hour or newborn bubble, which is something she's still grieving. Instead, there was an emergency c-section, a dystonic reaction, mistreatment from hospital staff, over 30 hours of separation from her baby, and a special care nursery admission, not to mention flashbacks, anxiety, panic attacks, rage, and hypervigilance. More curveballs only compounded this trauma in the form of dysphoric milk ejection reflex (D-MER), ongoing physical pain, cow's milk protein allergy, a six-month waitlist to see a psychologist, and returning to work at a hospital. The mental health impacts of birth trauma are real, and Dayna articulates this with such vulnerability and insight - and a bit of humour too. Through this conversation, she tells a story about parallels and contradictions, about mothering with trauma, about how her work as a nurse both helped and complicated her experience, and about the unforgettable experiences that will stay with her for a long time - for both the right and wrong reasons. This episode will make you feel every emotion - one after another, after another.   EPISODE SPONSOR This episode of Perinatal Stories Australia is proudly sponsored by Mums Matter Psychology—because your mental health matters. A Client Story to Emphasize in the Tell Me Your Story Podcast with Richard Dugan Introduction I'd like to focus today on a client who gave me permission to share the highlights of our recent session. I've changed his name to ensure anonymity. The Presenting Issues for Bill Let's say his name is Bill. Bill is 56 years old. He wanted to: Release feelings of anxiety/anger/fear/worry/fear of death. Release unresolved issues with his Dad who had died a number of years before after a contentious divorce from his Mom. Let go of limiting beliefs that life has to be a struggle or a burden. Utilize more of his talents, abilities and aspirations in service to God's Plan for his life. Bring more joy into his life. As many of your listeners know, I have a very Metaphysical Hypnotherapy Practice. So What is Hypnosis? Hypnosis is simply focused concentration. We go in and out of hypnosis every day. If you've ever cried while watching a sad film, you've been trance. It is quite similar to meditation In meditation, you are in a deeply relaxed state. It's like a telescope, inspiring you to see the big picture. In hypnosis, you are in that same deeply relaxed state. But it's like a microscope where we are looking within you and -- with the help of your guidance -- to resolve the issues you have brought to the session. 60% of my clients are visual -- if we go into a past life, it's like you're starring in your own motion picture costume drama. But 40% of my clients are more auditory or sensing or feeling -- which is what I am. Whenever I am in trance, I don't see anything. I hear it, I feel it, I sense it -- I just don't see it. I feel like I'm making it up. But I'm making up this story – not that one over there. Your soul speaks through your imagination. So I invite you to trust your first image, your first feeling, your first voice and share it with me. It's coming from somewhere. So get out of the way and trust in the process. What Happens During a Session? In the trance state – you'll easily be able to channel your Heart, your Higher Self and all the Guidance available to us from the Light. This includes Spirit Guides, Angels, Archangels and Ascended Masters. Plus the client can channel loved ones who have passed on as well as your past lives. This Guidance knows everything you from this life and past lives and is eager to partner with us to help you resolve the issues we are focusing on. I'd like to share my notes from my session with Bill no. After 25 years as a Hypnotherapist -- I was surprised at how this session unfolded. Into Hypnosis and Up into the Light I guided Bill into Hypnosis and then on a visualization taking him up into the Light of the 5th Dimension. In that higher vibration, we can go anywhere anyhow, anywhy and anywhen. Plus it is very easy to channel his Heart, his Higher Self, Archangel Michael and all his other Guidance. Those resources know everything about him from this life and past lives. Albert Einstein, the well-known physicist, was a believer in the 5th Dimension. He once indicated that it can be quicker and easier to resolve issues while in the 5th Dimension's higher vibration than doing Talk Therapy in the 3rd Dimension. We are working in the 5th applies thatimension here. I asked Bill to describe what he experienced up in the Light of the 5th Dimension: He s replied, I'm outside in nature filled with green trees, a stream and a big rock. Next, I asked his Heart to join us. You may experience your heart as an image, a feeling, a presence, a knowing or perhaps an inner voice. Bill said, My Heart is floating on the left side of me.” Let's invite that floating energy to come forth with words like “I'm here.” I'm here, said Bill's Heart. Heart: How do you support Bill? I offer him guidance/ protection/ life. Next we invited Bill's Higher Self to come forth. How does your Higher Self make itself known to you? Bill replied, My arms are tingling.

With a family history of postpartum depression, Chloe thought she knew what signs and symptoms to look out for when it came to perinatal mental illness. But, as she says, she didn't know about the ‘opposite side'. Immediately after birth, Chloe couldn't sleep, and within five days, she was experiencing a psychotic episode - or what she calls, ‘the crash'. Like clockwork, the same thing happened within five days of her second birth. In this episode, Tassie mum of two, Chloe, vividly recounts the insomnia, euphoria, mania, hallucinations, and delusions that consumed her early postpartum days, as well as the crippling and juxtaposing depression that unfortunately followed her second episode. Above all, Chloe takes me on a journey through the aftermath of her experiences: the loneliness she felt, the need to make sense of what happened, discovering her new ‘normal', fostering support and connections, the trial-and-error that comes with recovery, and all the ways she is determinedly trying to make peace with it all. Does it feel like you've spent hours in talk therapy, dissecting your thoughts and revisiting the past, but still feel stuck in anxiety or burnout? You're not alone. No shade on talk therapy—it can be life-changing for many. But if you've been hashing out your past for awhile now and still can't shake that anxious, burned-out feeling, there's a good chance you're overlooking the root of the problem because trauma, stress, and dysregulation aren't just stored in your mind—they live in your nervous system. In this episode, we're unpacking 3 main reasons why traditional talk therapy might not be working for you and exploring how a body-based approach can help you finally move forward.Think of this as your permission slip to explore body-based healing that actually helps you feel better, not just understand why you're struggling.Three things you'll learn in this episode:Why your trauma isn't all in your head—it's literally stored in your nervous system, and words alone won't solve that. How talking about painful events can be re-triggering if you're not simultaneously creating a felt sense of safety. What “understanding” can't fix—logic doesn't calm a nervous system, so you can't outthink anxiety or burnout. If talk therapy is working for you, amazing—keep going. But if it's not, it's time to step off that hamster wheel of frustration. You're not broken; you just need a different approach that speaks the body's language. Tune in to learn practical, nervous system–focused tools that go beyond just talking about the problem, so you can finally start feeling real change in your day-to-day life.P.S. This week we debut a special project within Bribe, Swindle or Steal: single-topic episodes that focus on extreme wealth. For years Alexandra Wrage has worked on corporate compliance and anti-corruption efforts, a field that provides a front-row view into human corruptibility. In these episodes, she digs into the practical, philosophical, political, and even spiritual roots of why people risk everything—from scandal to criminal charges—for the allure of money, even when all of their material needs are more than covered. She will explore some surprising challenges of wealth alongside the ways in which greed changes people and extreme wealth changes the rules that we all live by. Her first guest in this series is Clay Cockrell, a therapist in New York City whose Walk and Talk Therapy practice specializes in treating very wealthy clients. The problems they bring to therapy give him a unique insight into the privileges, the anxieties, and the perils exclusive to the 1%.
