Welcome to "Advancement Amplified: AI for IA," a 5-part Pulse Check hosted by Dan Giroux, a higher education marketing and communications leader focused on elevating the strategic impact of Advancement. Advancement is at a pivotal moment. As institutions navigate shifting donor expectations, alumni engagement challenges, financial pressures, and the demand for greater efficiency, AI is emerging as a transformative force. In today's Part 1, Dan Giroux sits down with Matthew Lambert, Senior Vice President for University Advancement at William & Mary, and Dan Frezza, Chief Advancement Officer at the College of Charleston. Together, they explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping the future of institutional advancement, from donor engagement to marketing and career services. With rapid technological shifts, both institutions are leveraging AI-powered tools, including autonomous virtual engagement officers (VEOs), to enhance outreach and optimize fundraising efforts.Related Links:Inside Higher Ed interview with Wren and Wren's websiteAGB magazine article around AIKey TakeawaysAI is not a replacement, but an enhancement. AI tools in advancement free up professionals to focus on high-value tasks while automating routine processes like contact reports and donor outreach.Virtual Engagement Officers (VEOs) are changing the game. AI-driven fundraisers at William & Mary and the College of Charleston are already fostering one-on-one donor relationships, leading to increased engagement and donations.AI adoption requires a culture of innovation. Institutions that embrace risk-taking and long-term thinking are better positioned to leverage AI effectively.Personalization is key. AI tools can customize communication, ensuring alumni and donors receive relevant, engaging content that strengthens their connection to their alma mater.Transparency builds trust. Clearly identifying AI-powered agents in donor interactions helps maintain credibility and donor confidence.Advancement leaders should experiment and iterate. Small-scale testing of AI tools allows teams to refine their approach while minimizing risks.Episode SummaryHow is AI Being Used in Institutional Advancement?AI is playing an increasingly critical role in institutional advancement, helping teams engage donors, streamline operations, and personalize communications. Both William & Mary and the College of Charleston are leveraging AI-driven solutions like virtual engagement officers (VEOs) to handle donor outreach, allowing human fundraisers to focus on high-value relationships. AI is also being integrated into marketing, career services, and student engagement to drive deeper connections across the university ecosystem. What Are Virtual Engagement Officers (VEOs) and How Do They Work?VEOs are AI-powered autonomous fundraisers that manage donor portfolios, initiate personalized conversations, and guide alumni through the giving process. At William & Mary, the VEO named "Wren" is engaging alumni by sharing curated content, answering inquiries, and even suggesting philanthropic opportunities based on donor interests. Similarly, the College of Charleston's VEO, “Alex,” is successfully fostering engagement by tailoring interactions, including crafting poetry for an alum who tested its capabilities. How Do Institutions Ensure AI Enhances, Rather Than Replaces, Human Connection?A key priority for both institutions is maintaining authenticity and transparency in AI-driven interactions. AI fundraisers introduce themselves as virtual engagement officers, rather than impersonating human staff members. Additionally, AI serves as a bridge to real fundraisers, helping schedule meetings or flagging high-potential donors for personal outreach. By handling lower-priority tasks, AI allows advancement professionals to deepen relationships with major donors and alumni in meaningful ways. What Challenges Exist in AI Adoption for Advancement?Implementing AI in institutional advancement comes with hurdles, including skepticism from staff, concerns over data security, and the need for institutional buy-in. Some advancement professionals worry about AI's impact on job security, while others fear losing the human touch in donor relationships. However, leaders like Lambert and Frezza emphasize that AI is not replacing human fundraisers, but rather empowering them to be more efficient and effective. What's Next for AI in Advancement? Both William & Mary and the College of Charleston plan to expand their use of AI beyond fundraising. Future applications may include using AI for student engagement, career advising, and even enrollment marketing. As AI technology continues to evolve, its role in advancement will likely grow, offering new ways to personalize outreach, improve donor experiences, and drive institutional success.AI is no longer a futuristic concept—it's happening now, and institutions that embrace it strategically will have a competitive edge in advancement and fundraising.Guest Names: Matthew Lambert, Senior Vice President of University Advancement, William & Mary; CEO, William & Mary FoundationDan Frezza, Chief Advancement Officer of Institutional Advancement, College of Charleston; CEO, College of Charleston FoundationGuest Socials: Matthew - https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewtlambert/Dan - https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan-frezza-56203262/Guest Bios: Matthew T. Claire de Mézerville López welcomes J. Cody Nielsen, Ph.D. to the Restorative Works! Podcast. Claire is joined again by co-host, Associate Director for the Collaborative Center for Restorative Practices in Higher Education Kaleigh Mrowka, Ph.D. In this series of episodes, we explore what it means to “walk through tensions” - how we exist, find, and build community and forge a path forward through times of extreme polarization. Dr. Nielsen joins us to explore the growing polarization in higher education, particularly around religious, secular, and spiritual identities within the landscape of intersectional equity. Drawing from his experience in higher education and faith inclusion, Dr. Nielsen examines how these identities intersect with broader cultural and geopolitical tensions, offering insight into the complexities educators and students in higher education face today. He challenges us to rethink our approach to discourse and the importance of the proactive, rather than reactive, use of restorative practices. Dr. Nielsen is Executive Director of Convergence Strategies, an international consulting organization focused on addressing issues of religious, secular, and spiritual identities (RSSIs) as a part of broad diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.  His work spans higher education, non-profit, K-12, and corporate settings.  For more than 15 years, Cody has worked in higher education settings in both the US and Canada and has established himself as an expert voice on issues related to religious equity and the ways in which religion has caused harm at the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality movements.  His work in relation to the Israeli and Palestinian conflict has exposed the need for more serious consideration of restorative practices to be incorporated into the interfaith movement, which he suggests needs a significant revisioning.  He serves as adjunct faculty at VCU, Lesley University, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and lives in Minneapolis.  Dr. Nielsen received his master's degree in Mental Health Counselling from the University of Northern Iowa and his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Iowa State University.  Tune in to discover practical strategies for navigating tensions and the critical role that restorative practices play in bridging gaps and building stronger relationships on campus. Walking Through Tensions is a special series of the Restorative Works! Podcast. Through this series, we aim to generate reflection, hope, and wisdom about how to strengthen relationships and community in situations of unrest, dissent, polarization, and concern. Its title, far from literal, represents a metaphor that poses a question: how can we exist and collaborate while surrounded by complex and tense environments? Our guests are doing impactful work in these areas: please be mindful that they may mention specific sensitive topics of situations taking place around the world. Their positioning may or may not be aligned or reflective of the IIRP's. We invite you to listen and to reflect with us while also taking care of your mental and emotional wellbeing. We hope to guide you in finding the learning tools that will help you and your community to walk through tensions in the best way possible.

Show Summary Would you like to apply to Tulane University School of Medicine, but are you concerned about the intense competition for seats? Its Director of Admissions, Dr. Mike Woodson, is our guest today, and he'll tell you what it takes to get in. Dr. Woodson discusses the unique aspects of Tulane's medical program, including its focus on healing communities and its integration of nursing students into the curriculum. He emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and authenticity in the application process and advises applicants to stop comparing themselves to others. Show Notes Welcome to the 569th episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Thanks for tuning in. Are you ready to apply to your dream medical schools? Are you competitive at your target programs? Accepted's med school admissions quiz can give you a quick reality check. Just go to accepted.com/medquiz, complete the quiz, and you'll not only get an assessment, but tips on how to actually improve your chances of acceptance. Plus, it's all free.  Our special guest today is Dr. Mike Woodson, Director of Admissions at Tulane University's School of Medicine. Mike earned his bachelor's at Elon University and an MS in Sport Management from Virginia Commonwealth, and his PhD in Higher Education and Higher Education Administration in 2022 from Liberty University. After working for several years in high school athletics, Dr. Woodson moved into the admissions world at Randolph-Macon College. He then was Assistant Director of Admission at the University of Houston and came to Tulane Medical in 2017 as Assistant Director of Admissions. In 2019, he became the Director of Admissions. Dr. Woodson, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. [1:54] Linda, it's great to be back with you. I've heard so many great things on the interview trail about your program and how it's helped pre-meds along the way. I've gotten some great reviews about our episode before, so can't wait to chat with you again. Thank you for the wonderful feedback.  To start, can you give us an overview of Tulane Medical's program focusing on its more distinctive aspects and elements? [2:11] Sure, Tulane School of Medicine is right in the heart of downtown New Orleans, Louisiana in the south. Our focus is mainly on really helping our community here in New Orleans. Now we have students that come from all over. The mission of our school is healing communities, and that's what everything about our school is focused on, whether it's curriculum, whether it's extracurricular activities, whether it's research, it's all focused on healing communities and we're trying to do that here in the New Orleans community. It's interesting that you say you're focused on healing communities, not individuals. Normally you think about doctors treating individuals, but this is a little bit different focus. [2:55] When we say healing communities, yes, individuals are part of the community, but as a whole, our goal is to really help the community because communities help themselves. It can't be this big institution that's talking down to the community, talking to individuals, lecturing communities, lecturing individuals about what they need to do. It has to be a partnership, and so it helps that Tulane is really partnering with the community in the community. Our students are living in the community. Our doctors and faculty are living in the community, so they have a vested interest in this. And so yes, individuals are part of the community, but overall we're really trying to focus on healing communities. What's new at Tulane since we last spoke? It's almost exactly two years ago. [3:49] I would say there are a couple of new things that we have going on. It doesn't really pertain per se to the medical school, but it will affect us. In the fall we have a new nursing program that started, and the good thing about that is, once it goes again with our mission of healing communities,

About Alex: Alex Lawrence is currently the Executive Director for Advancement Leadership Lab. Her role focuses on ALL's growth strategy, alumni experience, and overseeing our board of directors and stakeholder partnerships. Alex is no stranger to the leadership lab as she developed the pilot curriculum in 2018, and is thrilled to be back in this role as the organization continues to expand its impact. Her career has challenged her to consistently act like a start-up operator: developing people and structuring culturally competent organizations from the ground up.Alex started her career as an HR consultant for SPX, an international manufacturing company. She led projects in recruiting and mergers and acquisitions in Charlotte, NC and Battle Creek, MI, talent and organizational development in Dusseldorf, Germany, and labor negotiations and employee relations in Delavan, WI and Ocala, FL. This HR work led to a passion for building the talent pipeline and she transitioned to Red Ventures, a marketing acquisition company in Charlotte, NC. Alex led college recruitment strategy and execution at target universities to hire 50 analyst and web developer associates a year. She handled new associate onboarding and career trajectory plans, as well as recruited for HR, finance, and computer engineering roles at RV. Recruiting college talent led Alex back into the classroom at The Ohio State University. During graduate school, Alex held a role in Student Life Advancement, focusing on student philanthropy and leadership development. She stayed at the university post-graduation working as Project Manager for the President and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association. In this role, Alex handled administrative duties and projects for the CEO, while acting as a communications partner for department leaders across the alumni association and Advancement. Her family later took her to Phoenix, AZ where Alex worked for an international access-to-education non-profit as the Director of Communications and Marketing, traveling between the U.S. and Arusha, Tanzania. As mentioned above, she then had the opportunity to work from Phoenix to develop the inaugural curriculum for the Advancement Leadership Lab in 2018, and launch the pilot program across 10 universities. In 2019, Alex had the opportunity to return to Columbus, leading organizational operations as Chief of Staff for the Ohio State Alumni Association and stayed on as an advisor for the Advancement Leadership Lab. Transitioning to the Advancement Leadership Lab over the last year as its own 501c3 has been an exciting opportunity, combining Alex's experience in human resources, leadership development, and business operations to build the foundation for an impactful and sustainable organization.Alex has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Services and Counseling Psychology from Elon University and a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Administration from The Ohio State University. She lives in Columbus, OH with her husband, Danny, and puppy son, Larry. Alex enjoys her side gigs of interior design clients and teaching at CorePower Yoga.About Michael: A graduate of the University of California, San Diego, Mike Eicher began his career in higher education at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he rose from associate director of development in the School of Medicine to deputy director and director, and from there to vice provost for medical science development, then assistant and associate vice chancellor. Under his leadership as vice chancellor, Campaign UCLA, a 10-year effort completed in 2005, raised $3.05 billion. Prior to joining Ohio State, Mike served for six years as senior vice president for external affairs and development at Johns Hopkins University, where he led the Johns Hopkins: Knowledge for the World Campaign. That effort focused on student aid and faculty support, construction of clinical buildings at the medical campus and important renovation projects. It closed in 2008 with commitments of more than $3.7 billion. Mike returned to a public university because he believes in its noble mission and great power. He joined Ohio State in fall 2012 as senior vice president for Advancement and president of The Ohio State University Foundation. Building on his goal to inspire people to choose Ohio State – for their education, medical care, research support, entertainment and more – he has set out to share the university's most compelling stories, engage more than half a million alumni, and expand private philanthropy to support Ohio State's core priorities. Under Mike's direction, Ohio State streamlined and integrated its communications and marketing, alumni relations and fundraising teams. He led the But for Ohio State Campaign, which raised over $3 billion from more than 750,000 donors and became the university's most successful fundraising effort ever. Mike built upon that momentum and, along with his team, planned and launched Time and Change: The Ohio State Campaign in fall 2019. While its financial goal is the largest in Ohio State's history — $4.5 billion focused on student success; discovery; and healthy, vibrant communities — what truly sets this campaign apart from all others is its goal to engage 1 million supporters, which is unprecedented in higher education. Mike is focused on organizational growth, health, and wellness, which led to Advancement's establishment of a chief diversity officer position and the Advancement Inclusion Council. Both serve as resources by providing personal and professional development opportunities for staff. Mike's commitment to putting people first has been instrumental in the transformation of Advancement during his tenure. He lives in Columbus with his wife, Inez, and travels frequently. They have two grown children: Brandon Eicher (Kate) and Christine Peterson (Shane). They also have three young granddaughters who they love to spend time with.

Academic libraries are changing in the face of information technologies, economic pressures, and globally disruptive events such as the current pandemic. In Refocusing Academic Libraries Through Learning and Discourse: The Idea of a Library (Chandos, 2023), Mary K. Bolin argues for a radical vision of library transformation, offering practical solutions for transforming organizational and workflow structures for the future. This book analyzes existing organizational structures and proposes new ones that can be adapted to individual libraries. It discusses the challenges posed by virtual learning environments, digital initiatives and resources, changes to cataloging standards and succession planning, as well as changes brought about by the current pandemic. It aims to help library leaders find new models of organization that make the best use of limited resources.  Refocusing Academic Libraries Through Learning and Discourse: The Idea of a Library helps inform discussions taking place in academic libraries about organizational patterns and divisions of labor. These discussions are now more critical than ever because academic libraries are facing a time of disruption. This book will give librarians leverage to think outside traditional bureaucratic structures and re-think how libraries serve their patrons. The book examines existing structures and proposes new ones. Specifically, the book proposes organizational models and lays out a process for planning organizational transformation and implementing a new organization. Seven chapters offer a radical vision of library transformation, proposing a collaborative process for changing academic libraries into organizations that are fit for the second quarter of the twenty-first century and beyond. This book will be invaluable to librarians looking for solutions to library organizational and workflow structures. Mary K. Bolin, PhD, has more than 40 years of experience as a librarian and faculty member, administrator, and LIS instructor. Show Summary Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business is welcoming a newly launched Masters of Science in Management (MSM) program. The one-year program is designed for early-career professionals with zero to two years of work experience who are looking for a career pivot or to gain business skills. If that sounds interesting to you, you don't want to miss this episode of Admissions Straight Talk, where Linda Abraham sits down with  Dr. Kevin Dietrick, director of the MS in Business Analytics and MS in Management Program to learn more about the program and how to get in.  Show Notes Are you a college junior or senior with an interest in business and a non-business major? Or maybe you've graduated already and you feel like you need to boost your knowledge of business to propel your career and have a life of impact and consequence. Today's show is with the director of Carnegie Mellon Tepper's brand new Masters of Management. Let's learn all about it, because it might just be the program for you. Welcome to the 553rd episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Thanks for joining me. Before we dive into today's interview, I want to mention a resource at Accepted that can help you prepare your statement of purpose to a Master's in Management program or other graduate programs. Download Five Fatal Flaws To Avoid In Your Grad School Statement of Purpose to learn how to avoid the five most common mistakes that we see in grad school statements of purpose, as well as tips on how to write a statement of purpose that makes your story memorable and highlights your qualifications for your target program.  Our guest today is Dr. Kevin Dietrick, Director of the MS in Business Analytics and MS in Management Program at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business. Dr. Dietrick attended Allegheny College as an undergrad and earned his master's in education and his PhD in Higher Education and Higher Education Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He has been working in higher ed for most of the last 12 years. He came to CMU Tepper in 2018 as senior associate director of student services and became the director of the MS in Business Analytics in August and the director of the MS in Management last month.  Dr. Dietrick, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk and congratulations on those positions. [2:12] Thank you, Linda. Thanks for the introduction. Thanks for having me. My pleasure. Now let's start with a really basic question. What is the MS in Management at CMU Tepper and who is it for? [2:16] That's a really excellent question and I think a good place for us to start today. The new MS in Management – we just launched it a couple of months ago – is a new venture that we have here at Tepper that falls into what I think is a suite of master's degree programs offered through Tepper. It is a one-year business degree, and to the question of who is it for, it is for folks who are early on in their career. So we talk a lot about pre-experience. That's not necessarily exclusive. It doesn't mean you have to have zero experience, but generally, zero to two years of work experience is the type of student that you'll find in this program starting. Very exciting, the fall of 2024. So what that person looks like, and I know we're going to dig into a little bit of that today, but just to give you a little bit of a sense of what we're anticipating and frankly what we're searching for. I think this is a really neat opportunity for folks who maybe are looking for an early career pivot. And so, I think that looks and manifests in a couple of different ways. It might be simply that what I studied in college, I don't actually want to do. Maybe I was a computer science major, maybe I was an engineering major, and maybe I'm just looking for a little bit of a pivot and determining, you know what, I don't want to be a programmer. I don't want to work as a software engineer.

Constructing Student Mobility: How Universities Recruit Students and Shape Pathways between Berkeley and Seoul (MIT Press, 2023) challenges the popular image of the international student in the American imagination, an image of affluence, access, and privilege. In this provocative book, higher education scholar Stephanie Kim argues that universities -- not the students -- create the paths that allow students their international mobility. Focusing on universities in the United States and South Korea that aggressively grew their student pools in the aftermath of the Great Recession, Kim shows the lengths to which universities will go to expand enrollments as they draw from the same pool of top South Korean students. Using ethnographic research gathered over a ten-year period in which international admissions were impacted by the Great Recession, changes in US presidential administrations, and the COVID-19 pandemic, Constructing Student Mobility provides crucial insights into the purpose, effects, and future of student recruitment across the Pacific. Constructing Student Mobility received the Best Book Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education Council on International Higher Education. Stephanie Kim is a scholar, educator, author, and practitioner in the field of comparative and international higher education. She teaches at Georgetown University, where she is an Associate Professor of the Practice and Faculty Director of Higher Education Administration in the School of Continuing Studies. In our society, men are expected to be tough and emotionally resilient, but there is a lack of guidance on how to achieve this. Our Manlihood ManCast interview with Dr. John Delony offers valuable insights for men seeking to work on their mindsets, confront their past, and establish the connections and community necessary for personal growth. Understanding Men's Mental Health Dr. John Delony is a renowned expert in mental health and wellness, a bestselling author, and the host of The Dr. John Delony Show. With dual PhDs in Counselor Education and Supervision, as well as Higher Education Administration, his extensive background includes two decades of experience as a senior leader at various universities, a professor, researcher, and crisis responder. Today, as a Ramsey Personality, he is dedicated to teaching people how to regain control of their lives in our fast-paced world. Unpacking Trauma in Men's Lives Dr. Delony sheds light on the concept of trauma in a way that resonates with men. Contrary to popular belief, trauma isn't limited to catastrophic events; it can also stem from neglect, feeling unseen, or enduring challenging experiences in isolation. Regardless of its magnitude, trauma leaves a lasting impact that lingers in our bodies. It's not just a narrative from the past; it manifests as physical reactions in the present, affecting our relationships, spirits, and physical well-being. The Ripple Effect of Trauma One of the key points Dr. Delony emphasizes is that trauma often leads to behavior that is uncharacteristic of individuals. It erodes our self-worth and prompts us to react excessively to various stimuli, which can, in turn, perpetuate further trauma.
