What happens when a college software design course ditches traditional lectures and embraces Mob Programming? In this episode of the Mob Mentality Show, we sit down with Ben Kovitz, a former software developer turned professor at Cal Poly Humboldt, to explore his innovative approach to teaching software design through mobbing. Topics Covered: ✅ From Industry to Academia: Why Ben left software development to become a professor and how he discovered mob programming. ✅ Redefining Software Education: Instead of 30 traditional lectures on software design, Ben's students learn by doing—designing software while coding. ✅ The Power of Mobbing in the Classroom: How students collaborate in the mob of 8, rapidly sharing knowledge and tackling challenges together. ✅ Fast Learning vs. Lectures: Why mobbing enables faster knowledge transfer compared to passive lectures. ✅ Strong-Style Navigation: How rotations and fast timers helped to stimulate a highly effective learning environment. ✅ The Role of the Navigator: How students help each other navigate, learn C++ and the QT framework, and document key lessons from each mob session. ✅ Real-World Software Challenges: Simulating legacy code maintenance, evolutionary design, and design patterns like MVC (Model-View-Controller). ✅ Overcoming Student Struggles: What happens when students don't know how to navigate? How asking for help and learning together fosters growth. ✅ Teaching Through Experience: Letting students experiment with flawed solutions before introducing better design principles. ✅ Assessment & Engagement: How Ben measures student participation, engagement, and learning outcomes in a mobbing environment. Why This Matters: Traditional software design education can leaves students unprepared for the realities of refactoring real code and collaborative development. By integrating Mob Programming, refactoring techniques, and hands-on problem-solving, Ben Kovitz is equipping the next generation of developers with practical, real-world skills and deeper design insights.

In this episode Dr. Riley Kirk interviews researcher Dr. Whitney Ogle about using cannabis for exercise, Dr. Ogle is passionate about this subject because she has found the benefits of medicating before runs, hikes and other forms of exercise and believes it can be a tool to a healthier lifestyle. Dr. Kirk and Dr. Ogle talk about what reserach that is currently happening, how both of them personally integrate cannabis and exercise, navigating difficult conversations, the role of CBD and more. Dr. Ogle's Bio: My personal mission is to make the science of human movement meaningful, understandable, and applicable to daily life. I am guided by my values in finding connections among concepts from diverse sources, striking a balance between cultivating new ideas and improving on current designs, and continual growth by learning with and from others. Originally from Chicagoland, I have moved all over the United States for school and work. I earned my Bachelors degree in Exercise Science from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. While in my Doctorate in Physical Therapy program at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, I had the opportunity to do clinical rotations in Utah, Arizona, Washington, Western Colorado, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. After I completed my DPT degree, I worked as an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist near Seattle and helped with functional capacity evaluations of injured workers north of Seattle. I decided to go back to school to get more involved in research at Indiana University where I earned a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology and a PhD in Human Performance with a focus on Motor Control and Motor Learning with a minor in Psychological Brain Sciences. While I was working towards these degrees, I worked as a home health physical therapist for babies 6 months to 3 years old in rural Southern Indiana and occasionally in skilled nursing facilities for older adults who were medically stable enough to be out of the hospital but not safe enough to be at home. I was drawn to Cal Poly Humboldt because of its strong focus in social justice, giving students hands on experience with research, and because it is physically beautiful! I enjoy rock climbing, slacklining, swimming, hiking, and going on walks with my cats. I was so fortunate to be educated by the great Dr. Shane Calhoun of Calhoun Counseling Services. He explains the neurochemicals better than I've ever heard and he simplifies it perfectly for my skull spaghetti. Dr. Shane Calhoun is a Clinical Health Psychologist who specializes in Adult ADHD. He has several masters degrees and graduated with his doctorate from Loma Linda University in 2012. He has been licensed for over a decade and in the last year he left his position as the Training Director at Cal Poly Humboldt to invest in the neurodiverse community through his private practice. He has been guest host on both radio and podcasts helping people in the neurodiverse community advance on their own personal wellness journeys. You can find more information about him on his profile on Psychology Today. He also runs ADHD counseling groups and one is starting on the 9th of July. They will be accepting new members into the foreseeable future and would love it if you reached out. Enrollment is ongoing so check in at any time. If a group fills up, he will form a new one. His Psychology Today profile will have more information on how you can contact him as well as his personal website at CalhounCounselingServices.comMore from Dr. Shane: I have been a good fit for individuals looking for a supportive space to address anxiety and depression, needing movement in developing new coping strategies, seeking a deeper level of wellness and balance, or identity development. I have often found that I work well with those who have found therapy unhelpful in the past and are looking to give it another try. I also recognize that counseling is a different experience for those who identify as ADHD or ASD. The neuro-diverse culture is an area that I have experience in and that I find meaningful to work with. Some difficulties are a necessary part of our journey to live meaningfully, but not all of them. We can let go of unhelpful ways of coping and create new habits, making this journey more meaningful and goal oriented. Each story is unique and no solution universal. I look forward to hearing your unique experience so we can explore what wellness means for you.If you are curious about whether we are a good fit, let's have a 15 minute consultation and figure that out together.************************************** Check out the 8 Essential ADHD Big Brother Episodes, curated and ordered specifically to get you primed and ready to successfully manage your ADHD life! In this sixth episode, host Emily Harwitz travels to the Sierra Nevada mountain range (figuratively) with guest Neida Rodriguez, a rising forestry student at Cal Poly Humboldt and this year's Giant Sequoia Forest Fellow. There's only one species of the biggest tree on Earth—giant sequoias—and it's a special treat to hear from Neida herself about what it's like to work among giants and what stewarding sequoias looks like today. From preparing the land for healthy fire to learning from the Tribes who know this land best, to monitoring for bears and finding gray wolf tracks (!), Neida regales us with tales from the field and gives us the latest on what's happening in the world of giant sequoias. ABOUT OUR GUEST Neida Rodriguez is a forestry student at Cal Poly Humboldt and this year's Giant Sequoia Forest Fellow. As a forester and naturalist, she hopes to restore and steward the places she loves while giving back to her community by creating opportunities for people to get out into the field. When she's not walking amongst giant sequoias, you might find Neida in the desert admiring the beauty of all things great and small. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/savetheredwoods/message

Floating offshore wind projects are slowly moving forward off the coasts of California and Southern Oregon. The projects could power millions of homes, but they’ve also raised concerns from tribal governments, environmental organizations and the commercial fishing industry. The Pacific Offshore Wind Consortium aims to address some of those questions. Made up of centers at Oregon State University, Cal Poly Humboldt and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the consortium will conduct research and provide public information about offshore wind on the West Coast. Bryson Robertson is the director of the Pacific Marine Energy Center and a professor of civil and construction engineering at OSU. He joins us with more details about the effort.
In this fifth episode, host Emily Harwitz chats with Kyle Buchanan and Karla Jovel about Interpretation—the kind that blends science, art, and storytelling in the outdoors to help park visitors appreciate the natural and cultural histories of the places they love. We also get an inside look at the new and exciting project called Forests for All that's bringing local communities out into Redwood National and State Parks to go on fun and meaningful excursions, from day hiking to days-long backpacking trips. Karla launched Forests for All in 2023 and soon brought Kyle in to support. Together, they're shaping the way we interpret, understand, and love the redwoods. ABOUT OUR GUESTS: Kyle Buchanan Kyle Buchanan is a California State Parks Interpreter located in the North Coast Redwoods District. Graduating with a BA in Sociology from California State University, Long Beach, Kyle focuses on bringing social equity into parks. Whether it's a guided walk, virtual field-trip, campfire program, or kayaking trip, Kyle believes everyone should have the opportunity of experiencing it. Lastly, when he is not working then he's probably out exploring another one of California's 280 State Parks. Karla Jovel City girl moves to the coastal redwoods. Karla Jovel is an artist, naturalist, and educator based in Northern California. Karla received a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Management from Cal Poly Humboldt and is the Interpretation Supervisor for the North Coast Redwoods District. As the Israel-Hamas conflict rages on, college campuses across the United States have become hotbeds of protest, with students demanding their universities divest from companies supporting Israel's military actions in Gaza. The Associated Press reports that arrests related to these demonstrations have now surpassed 2,000, spanning at least 35 schools since the protests began in mid-April at Columbia University. While some institutions have reached agreements with protesters, such as the University of Minnesota and Brown University, others have resorted to more forceful measures. Police have cleared encampments at universities like UCLA and Portland State, often leading to clashes and numerous arrests. Notably, a police officer at Columbia University allegedly fired his gun while clearing protesters from an administration building, though no injuries were reported. The protests have also spread beyond U.S. borders, with demonstrations popping up in France, South Africa, and Mexico. Republican leaders in California have criticized university administrations for allowing the protests to escalate, calling for the firing of leaders at schools like UCLA and Cal Poly Humboldt. Meanwhile, President Biden has defended the right to peacefully protest but condemned violence, vandalism, and hate speech, emphasizing that "order must prevail." As tensions continue to mount, universities find themselves grappling with the challenge of balancing free speech and campus safety. Some argue that the crackdowns demonstrate an unwillingness to engage with students and their demands, while others maintain that civil disobedience comes with an expectation of consequences. The arrests have not been limited to students alone, with professors from Dartmouth and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville among those taken into custody. In some cases, the protests have moved beyond campus boundaries, as seen in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where demonstrators blocked access to a main gate at Kirtland Air Force Base. University leaders are facing pressure from various angles, with Florida's state university chancellor ordering campus presidents to prevent disruption of graduation ceremonies by protesters. The Pulitzer Prize Board has commended student journalists for their coverage of the protests, recognizing the risks they face in documenting these events. As the academic year draws to a close, it remains to be seen how this wave of activism will shape the future of campus politics and the ongoing debate over the U.S. role in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The coming weeks and months will likely see continued discussions and potential policy changes as universities navigate the complexities of this highly charged issue. Institution (In-sti-tu-tion): While some institutions have reached agreements with protesters, such as the University of Minnesota and Brown University, others have resorted to more forceful measures.Protester (Pro-test-er): While some institutions have reached agreements with protesters, such as the University of Minnesota and Brown University, others have resorted to more forceful measures.Vandalism (Van-dal-ism): Meanwhile, President Biden has defended the right to peacefully protest but condemned violence, vandalism, and hate speech, emphasizing that "order must prevail."Unwillingness (Un-wil-ling-ness): Some argue that the crackdowns demonstrate an unwillingness to engage with students and their demands, while others maintain that civil disobedience comes with an expectation of consequences.Demonstrator (Dem-on-stra-tor): In some cases, the protests have moved beyond campus boundaries, as seen in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where demonstrators blocked access to a main gate at Kirtland Air Force Base. Nayib Bukele, the leader of El Salvador, gathered every single official in each branch of government and told them that he was going to investigate each person for bribery. This inspired my thinking into how to dismantle corrupt colleges. We have seen the recent violent protests and takeovers at Columbia and UCLA. These corrupt institutions must be taken apart. I have an idea; let's put them to the test. Do they really want to provide education to marginalized people or do you want to be marxist storefronts? What does God's Word say? Deuteronomy 21:18-21 ESV “If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they discipline him, will not listen to them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.' Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear, and fear.2 Timothy 3:1-4 ESVBut understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of GodLuke 15:11-16 NIV The Parable of the Lost Son11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them.13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.Episode 1,577 Links:Remarkable video from El Salvador. Pro-Palestinian campus protests at universities across the country - including Sac State and Cal Poly Humboldt. Also, Loaves and Fishes responds to a landmark Supreme Court case on homelessness. Finally, Nevada County holds a “Dark Sky Photo Contest.” Pro-Palestinian Campus Protests Hundreds of students have been arrested following pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the country. The demonstrations and encampments are in support of the people of Gaza, and come with demands that universities divest from companies that do business with Israel. The organization behind the national movement is Students for Justice in Palestine, which says it's supporting over 350 solidarity organizations across the U.S., including California state universities like Sacramento State. Cal Poly Humboldt demonstrations escalated over the past week. The university says 25 people were arrested Tuesday morning after protesters occupied two campus buildings and defied orders to disperse last Friday. Cal Poly Humboldt put a hard closure to campus over the weekend that extends through May 10 — the end of the semester. Kianna Znika is a student journalist and the station manager for KRFH, the student-run radio station at Cal Poly Humboldt. Sage Alexander is a reporter with the Times-Standard. Keith David Watenpaugh is a Professor and Director of Human Rights Studies at UC Davis. Sacramento State and Cal Poly Humboldt were both invited to the show but declined. The Cal State Office of the Chancellor declined an interview, but in a statement responded to how CSU campuses are responding to demonstrations, “While the CSU operates as a system, it consists of 23 universities, each with unique sets of circumstances and local jurisdictions. As such, campuses are best qualified to make real-time decisions through a local lens, while understanding they have the support of the Chancellor's Office.” Loaves & Fishes The Supreme Court is still considering the case of Grants Pass v. Johnson, which has been described as the most important case about homelessness in decades. The legal question revolves around whether unhoused people can be criminally punished for sleeping or camping outside, even if adequate shelter is not available. Loaves & Fishes Executive Director Angela Hassell joins Insight to talk about the services her organization provides, and what a Supreme Court decision could mean for the unhoused community here in Sacramento, which faces both a homelessness and affordable housing crisis. Dark Sky Photo Contest There has been a growing “dark skies” push from cities and counties that want to maintain an unadulterated night sky in rural spaces and protected wildlands. In an effort to raise awareness about light pollution, Nevada County launched Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, a photo contest capturing the naturally dark sky and its beauty - as well as the impact bright city lights can have on the landscape. Nevada County District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall and Project Administrator Ariel Lovett join Insight with more on the contest and overall mission.

Did you know that grasslands account for between 20 and 40 percent of the world's land area? Generally open, fairly flat, and accessible, they exist on every continent except Antarctica. Ecologically as important as but different from other large ecoregion types such as forests or deserts, grasslands are even more vulnerable to pressure from human populations – for settling, planting, livestock, and development. Threats to natural grasslands, as well as the wildlife that live on them, include farming, overgrazing, invasive species, illegal hunting, and climate change. At the same time, one study found California's grasslands and rangelands could store more carbon than forests because they are less susceptible to wildfires and drought. Still, less than 10 percent—of the world's grassland is currently protected in large part due to a lack of understanding of their ecological role. Which is where Dr. Justin Luong comes in. Grassland ecosystems fill an ecological role as important as and different than our charismatic forests, our extreme deserts, and our coastal or chaparral scrub. And in fact, much of the general home garden lanscapes with their mix of perennial flowers, annual vegetables, and grasses, in many ways mimic grassland meadows. Ecologist and educator Dr. Justin Luong of Cal Poly Humboldt joins Cultivating Place this week to share more about his journey (including being a worm wrangler) in science, practice, and education focused on biodiversity and climate resiliency, most recently through grassland restoration ecology.
