Hello and welcome to episode 147 of the ACPG podcast. This week we have great and fascinating conversation with Phil Thornally, writer, singer, bass player, producer, engineer. He's done the lot and this is a fantastic chat. A quick scan of the many records Phil Thornalley has worked on, and you'll quickly spot some of the biggest names in popular music, including Bryan Adams, Thompson Twins, The Cure, Psychedelic Furs, XTC, Duran Duran, and even Paul McCartney. Phil co-wrote and produced Natalie Imbruglia's 1997 worldwide smash “Torn,” and has written hits with Pixie Lott (“Mama Do”) and BBMak (“Back Here”). A kind of rock'n'roll Zelig, his name is probably on countless records in your collection, although you probably didn't even know it was him. That bass line on The Cure's “Love Cats”? That's Phil. The haunting and ethereal production on Prefab Sprout's “When Love Breaks Down”? That's Phil too. Now, on his latest offering, Now That I Have Your Attention, Phil Thornalley steps out of The Swamp (his North London studio) to unveil 11 catchy and brand-new original songs (plus three bonus tracks on the CD!) that find him exploring the production stylings pioneered by the Electric Light Orchestra's Brummie boffin, Jeff Lynne. Thank you to Phil and Terry for the interview and their time.

Colin Campsie is one of those artists that consistently made quality music whether everyone was paying attention or not. He and his partner George McFarlane finally started having success in the early 80s as The Quick, an excellent dance group that had a #1 Dance chart hit with "Zulu". After three albums they changed their name to Giant Steps, took on a more r&b style, and scored a #13 hit in 1988 with "Another Lover". However, both before and since, Colin has written and produced for other people consistently racking up a diverse resume in the process. Along the way he even befriended former guest Phil Thornalley and the two have worked together on various projects (Natalie Imbruglia, Kasim Sulton, etc) ever since. Here's his whole story and you're likely to hear a lot of new songs that you're sure to love. Enjoy! www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
Some people have had a disproportionately successful music career, having written, produced, engineered or played on a staggering number of sublime pop records. One such person is Phil Thornalley. Phil cut his teeth in the studio in the late 1970s with pop supremo Mickie Most before a precocious career engineering, producing and/or playing with The Cure, Prefab Sprout, Johnny Hates Jazz and Thompson Twins, among many others. His work on TT's ‘Into the Gap' earned him a Grammy nomination. Paul and Sean of course quiz him on his time working with Andrew Gold and Graham Gouldman on their second set of Wax songs, ‘Magnetic Heaven'. Since the ‘80s, he's enjoyed some spectacular success as a songwriter, most famously perhaps with Natalie Imbruglia's ‘Torn' and two number ones for Pixie Lott. He's also worked with Bryan Adams. So this guy has some pretty spectacular pedigree! Phil's production style in the mid-late 1980s - along with that of his peers - could be dismissed lazily as dated or of-its-time, but closer examination reveals some delights. We were gobsmacked by his recycling of 10cc's pioneering tape loop techniques for his work on an ‘80s classic…. We won't spoil the surprise! The biggest revelation though has been Phil's own ‘band' project: his two albums as Astral Drive. Possibly Sean's favourite new discovery of the year! It's deliciously great pop, full of hooks, great melodies and 60s/70s sounds, and we have a lot of fun quizzing Phil on his obvious influences: Todd Rundgren features heavily!
On Episode 54 of The Record Store Day Podcast, UK Music Producer Phil Thornalley talks about his new project Astral Drive, and his work with The Cure, Psychedelic Furs, Thompson Twins, Bryan Adams, Natalie Imbruglia, and more. Utopia bassist Kasim Sulton talks about working with newly inducted Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Todd Rundgren, Meat Loaf, and his own new solo album Kasim 2021. Journalist Annie Zaleski talks about Duran Duran's Rio album. Plus Russell Baggett of 10,000 Hz Records in Opelika, Alabama, and RSD's Carrie Colliton. Sponsored as always by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and Tito's Handmade Vodka. Please subscribe wherever you get podcasts. Go to RecordStoreDay.com for up to the minute RSD news.
This week is one of the best sidemen in the business, Kasim Sulton! Kasim hit the big leagues when he joined Utopia in the mid-70s where he stayed for about a decade. Of course this formed the bond with Todd Rundgren that has remained to this day. In addition there have been stints with Meat Loaf, Joan Jett, Hall and Oates, Blue Oyster Cult, the Indigo Girls and many more. When he has the time, he releases solo albums, including his latest, Kasim 2021 (produced by former guest Phil Thornalley), which comes out on Sept. 17th. Here we go deep on the new album, how he's managed to be a Robin to so many "difficult" Batmen, collaborating with other former guests like Cherry Vanilla and Glen Burtnik, and much more. On this episode Tim and Phil chat about a huge hit that has remained on radio playlists since its release twenty two years ago. In fact Tim chats with co-host Phil Thornalley, one of the writers, along with Anne Preven and Scott Cutler, of ‘Torn', a song that was recorded five times before it became an international hit for Natalie Imbruglia. This Songstripper episode was the very first Tim and Phil recorded to trial their podcast skills before ‘lockdown' became one of the defining words of 2020. anchor.fm/songstripper facebook.com/songstrippr twitter.com/songstripper instagram.com/songstripper
Songstripper is a new podcast by Tim Jackson and Phil Thornalley. Established songwriters and producers themselves, each episode they chat with a songwriting legend about one of their evergreen hits. One massive song that they not only wrote but also played on and produced. They strip away the legend of the song with their guest and take a look behind the curtain at how it was born. The inspiration, the clever title, the lyrics and melody, the magical arrangement, who played what where and why; exposing those intimate details, sometimes long forgotten, of what genius or luck came together to create such a memorable song and, ultimately, a hit record. Sit back, relax and enjoy. Drum roll please.... In the first episode Phil and Tim talk with legendary songwriter Graham Gouldman about the classic 10cc hit “I'm Mandy Fly Me”. They delve into his early work as a teenage hit writer for bands such as the Yardbirds and get a fascinating glimpse into how 10cc went about writing and recording their progressive pop masterpieces. Phil's journey through the music industry has been one for the ages. At just 21 years old, Phil was brought in to produce The Cure's Pornography album in 1982. That even lead to an 18 month stint as their touring bassist. What it also lead to was a partnership with the late-great producer Alex Sadkin, which had him producing some major albums of the era like Duran Duran's Seven and the Ragged Tiger and the Thompson Twins' Into the Gap (which got him a Grammy nom). We also discuss his work with favorites like Andrew Gold, Robbie Nevil, Prefab Sprout, Bryan Adams (who he also toured with), Johnny Hates Jazz (who he also joined) and even Ricky Gervais! But, what he might be best known for his co-writing the song "Torn" which went on to be one of the biggest singles of the 90s for Natalie Imbruglia. His love of music began when he fell in love with Todd Rundgren and he recently paid tribute to his hero with the release of his second solo album under the name Astral Drive, which is one of the best bursts of sunshine you'll ever hear and borrows heavily from Todd's DIY spirit. Astral Drive is one of the best albums of 2018, you don't want to miss it! Enjoy! https://www.facebook.com/astraldrive/

Special guest Phil Thornalley who recorded the recently released Todd-centric album Astral Drive! Phil Thornalley has spent much of his career behind the scenes, writing songs and producing albums for other artists. His biggest commercial triumph, co-writing and producing the single "Torn" for Natalie Imbruglia, wasn't even sung by him. However, Thornalley does have experience underneath the spotlight. In 1983, Thornalley became the bass player for gothic rock pioneers the Cure after Simon Gallup left. Thornalley had previously co-produced the Cure's 1982 LP ography. Thornalley toured with the Cure while the band promoted The Top album, but his stay was short-lived, lasting only until the group's performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York on November 17, 1984. Gallup had returned to the Cure, causing Thornalley to leave. In 1987, Thornalley worked as an engineer for Johnny Hates Jazz's debut LP Turn Back the Clock; he also wrote the track "Listen." When vocalist Clark Datchler departed from Johnny Hates Jazz in 1988, Thornalley became the band's new lead singer. Thornalley also recorded a solo effort that year, Swamp. In 1991, Johnny Hates Jazz released Tall Stories with Thornalley on vocals. Despite having no dramatic shifts in style from Turn Back the Clock, the LP failed to sell. In 1995, Thornalley co-wrote the track "Torn" on Ednaswap's self-titled debut. Three years later, Thornalley produced Imbruglia's cover of "Torn," a worldwide smash.
