Steve Taylor is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, film maker, and actor. He had a successful solo career during the 1980s. In contrast to many Christian musical artists, his songs have often taken aim at Christian hypocrisy or 'error' with the use of satirical, sardonic lyrics. In 1997, he founded the record label Squint Entertainment, which fueled the careers of artists such as Sixpence None the Richer and Burlap to Cashmere. He has produced and written for numerous musical acts, one of the most consistent being Newsboys. And Manwell Reyes was the lead singer for Group 1 Crew, an American Christian hip hop and R&B band. Matt caught up with them at Easterfest many years ago, and got to chat to them about their story! Support the show: http://historymakersradio.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This has to stop.  And that is why I am running for Supreme Court.”Nebraska's competing abortion petitionshttps://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/06/13/sorting-through-nebraskas-abortion-ballot-initiatives/Nebraska voters who want to weigh in this November on the future of abortion in the state have three petitions to consider signing. One group that is circulating petitions wants to make abortion a state constitutional right. Two other groups circulating petitions both oppose abortion. But their petitions approach the path to further restrictions differently.Organizers of all three petition initiatives have until July 3 to turn in signatures from 10% of Nebraska registered voters, or about 123,000 people, to the Secretary of State's Office. Of those, signatures are required from at least 5% of registered voters in at least 38 counties.Kansas Farmers Faced With Major Water Shortagehttps://kansasreflector.com/2024/06/13/time-for-a-reckoning-kansas-farmers-brace-for-water-cuts-to-save-ogallala-aquifer/After 50 years of studies, discussions and hand-wringing about the aquifer's decline, the state is demanding that local groundwater managers finally enforce conservation. But in this region where water is everything, they'll have to overcome entrenched attitudes and practices that led to decades of overpumping.“It scares the hell out of me,” farmer Hugh Brownlee said at a recent public meeting in the district on the changes to come.Last year, Kansas lawmakers passed legislation squarely targeting the Southwest Kansas Groundwater Management District, which spans a dozen counties. Unlike the two other Kansas districts that sit atop the crucial aquifer, this one has done little to enact formal conservation programs that could help prolong the life of the aquifer. The new law aims to force action.South Carolina Ripe For Full Abortion Banhttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/jun/13/south-carolina-abortion-banThe right to legal abortion in South Carolina is in a “dire” condition, said the state senator Penry Gustafson, who lost her seat on Tuesday to a primary challenger prepared to vote to ban abortion at conception.Gustafson is one of five female lawmakers dubbed the “sister senators” who blocked legislation to outlaw abortion from the point of conception in the state. The three Republicans among them – Gustafson, Sandy Senn and Katrina Shealy – each drew male primary challengers who competed for conservative primary voters seeking more restrictive abortion access.Missouri begins major project to improve Interstate 70https://www.missourinet.com/2024/06/13/shovels-come-out-to-break-ground-on-missouris-historic-i-70-expansion/A groundbreaking ceremony was held today to celebrate the start of construction for the Improve I-70 project, which will widen the interstate to at least three lanes each in both directions from St. Louis to Kansas City.Construction on the $2.8 billion Improve I-70 Program is set to begin in July. The first phase of the project begins in mid-Missouri, with the interchanges of U.S. Route 63 in Columbia and U.S. Route 54 in Kingdom City.Gov. Mike Parson was on hand to commemorate the occasion. One of his top priorities throughout his tenure has been to improve Missouri's infrastructure system.“What we're doing in infrastructure in this state is going to set us apart from many, many other states and it's just, for the future of our state, I can't even explain how much of an impact it's going to have. But it's fun. Self-described as “Death Cab For Country,” Stephen Wilson Jr. draws upon indie rock, grunge and country to create a distinct sound that is influenced by artists as diverse as The National, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Nirvana.Wilson was raised by a single father who was a boxer and had him boxing from age seven through adulthood as an Indiana State Golden Gloves finalist. If you grew up in or adjacent to evangelical culture, the sounds of ‘90s and early 2000s Christian Rock are as familiar to you as the beginning bars of Britney Spears “Hit Me Baby One More Time.” The Newsboys, dcTalk, Jars of Clay, Third Day, Jennifer Knapp, Caedmon's Call — these groups peaked just twenty years ago, but the sound and vibe feels like an archeological find. Same for the crossover “secular” hits from Creed, Lifehouse, Sixpence None the Richer, and Switchfoot. Where did Christian rock go? Did it just get devoured by Nickelback and Noah Kahan? Was it actually good? And what purpose did it actually serve in what we now understand as the evangelical culture war? Leah Payne, author of a God Gave Rock & Roll To You: A History of Contemporary Christian Music joins us to root the rise of Christian rock in history — and consider the ways it was wielded to control teens. If you grew up in this culture, there will be a lot of nostalgic groaning; if you didn't, we've worked hard to make it as accessible as possible — and help connect some dots about how evangelical ideologies work their way into the mainstream.Join the ranks of paid subscribers and get bonus content, access to the discussion threads, ad-free episodes, and the knowledge that you're supporting an indie pod trying to make its way in the world. Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum of Sixpence None the Richer join Caroline Hobby for this episode of Get Real. Leigh and Matt share about being ‘two kids from New Braunfels, Texas' that went on to find massive success with iconic hits like “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes.” Leigh, lead singer of the group, grew up wanting to be the next (fellow Texan) Tanya Tucker. Leigh and Matt described not being ‘cool' enough to break into the Austin music scene, but they were accepted in the Dallas scene. Matt would get out of college classes and drive himself and Leigh, who was still in high school, up to Dallas to perform and that's how they got their start. The two detail their love / hate relationship with “Kiss Me” which was a massive hit early in their career, prompted by tv/movie placements like “She's All That” and “Dawson's Creek.” They discuss getting a massive break with David Letterman having them on his show to perform and then pulling them in for an unplanned interview. Leigh and Matt share about the pressures of fame and success and going through a season of burn out and more. It's Claire Delaney who joins Alexa this week to give us a tour behind the scenes of working on the ITV show ‘Mamma Mia! I have a dream', the search for Sophie and Sky. Claire is a vocal coach with a private business and also teaches at UK Drama School Italia Conti. She initially trained in Opera, performing at the likes of the Royal Albert Hall, and now works with singers of all skill levels from beginners to West End professionals. To celebrate the winners of ‘Mamma Mia! I have a dream' and their West End debut, Claire is here to give us the gossip on how she landed this TV job, what her role entailed on the program, and how we can help our theatre performers navigate auditions.  KEY TAKEAWAYS "Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream'' premiered on ITV in October 2023. The program followed the quest for two fresh and undiscovered talents in musical theatre, aiming to cast them in the roles of Sophie Sheridan and Sky Ramand for the West End rendition of the musical "Mamma Mia!". If you or one of your students are thinking about applying for a TV show like this in the future, Claire believes you need to be strong in the following areas: story telling, working collaboratively, creating chemistry, having the endurance to perform 9 shows a week, and not taking yourself too seriously. In previous "Mamma Mia!" shows, it was understood that straight tone was desired over vibrato. However this more traditional approach didn't appear to be the case in the TV show. Claire loves vibrato because it adds colour and a feeling of release in the voice. As a teacher you need to make sure your student can do both so they can use whichever they think is right for them. BEST MOMENTS ‘I feel like having worked on TV now it adds to my credibility' ‘It's not Shakespeare, it's pure entertainment and just joyous' ‘The key to any audition is to do your background development on the character' ‘My best advice is just be cheeky and ask, the worst anyone can say is no and not everybody will say no'   EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: https://www.delaneycoaching.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @Claire.delaney.coach Tik Tok: Claire_TheVocalCoach Relevant Links & Mentions: Fiona McDougal: https://fionamcdougal.com/ London School of Musical Theatre: https://www.lsmt.co.uk/ Italia Conti Arts: https://www.italiaconti.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 91 How to Help Prepare Singers for Drama School Auditions with Michael Vickers Songs mentioned: Luck Be a Lady from Guys and Dolls; Trustfall by Pink; Somebody To Love from We Will Rock You; Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer; Shivers by Ed Sheeran; Night Fever from Saturday Night Fever Vocology in Practice: https://www.vocologyinpractice.org/ ABOUT THE GUEST Claire Delaney is a professional voice coach and currently teaches at Italia Conti. Rock That Doesn't Roll: The Story of Christian Music

The late 90s and early aughts were a banner time for a really specific type of rock band - the are-they-or-aren't-they a Christian band, band. Sixpence None the Richer. Creed. Evanescence. Lifehouse. Owl City. Paramore. They all had different sounds, but they left listeners wondering: are they - or aren't they - “Christian music?” This week on Rock that Doesn't Roll: does an artist who identifies as Christian have to brand their music as such? With insight from David Dark (author, We Become What We Normalize), hosts Andrew Gill (producer, Sound Opinions) and Leah Payne (author, God Gave Rock & Roll to You) follow the story of Jon Foreman, a pastor's kid from Carlsbad, California whose band Switchfoot created songs that resonated with youth group kids and climbed the Top 40 charts. Were they, or were they not, a Christian band? We explore efforts to rethink Christian music, and how mainstream superstars U2 led the way for bands like Switchfoot to wrestle with the marketing category of “Christian” - and find an enduring connection with their fans along the way. Episode 163: Of course, we begin with a quick Kate Bush update (HRT80s has never been so invested in a current Hot 100 chart), and then it's time to discuss some superstars from the R&B Chart. Last time we visited the subject, we left off on the letter H -- so get ready for info on Isaac Hayes, Leon Haywood, Heavy D and others. Number 163: Since it's episode 163, we are focusing on number 163 on Treblezine's top 200 songs of the 80's, which is "There She Goes" by UK act The La's. You know this song whether you were a fan back in the day, or maybe you're a fan of Gilmore Girls or Sixpence None the Richer. No judgment!
