Episode 24 of On The Record with Brian Wise and Michael Mackenzie opens not in a record shop or a green room, but in the unglamorous reality of domestic collapse: Brian's gas hot water service fails, leaving him hunting for a plumber and waiting five days for resolution. Musically, the emotional high point is a warm, informed appreciation of David Byrne.  The hosts tip their hats to Byrne's wider career, including his work with Brian Eno, particularly ** My Life in the Bush of Ghosts **, and note his recent appearance at Jazz Fest. THE WATERBOYS make their long-awaited return to Australia and New Zealand in May 2026 their first tour in over a decade.Led by the incomparable Mike Scott and critically acclaimed as one of the best live bands on the planet, the 2025 band also features double keyboard players Brother Paul from Memphis and James Hallawell from Cornwall and is grounded by killer Irish rhythm section Aongus Ralston (bass) and Eamon Ferris (drums).THE WATERBOYS will be performing tracks from their audacious new album, Life, Death and Dennis Hopper: a bold, cinematic tribute to the maverick American actor and cultural icon, along with material across their storied catalogue. From the early "big music" of The Whole Of The Moon and classic album This Is The Sea through to the roots-inspired Fisherman's Blues era and music from their ambitious post-2015 output.HEAVY sat down with Mike for a chat ahead of the tour, asking him about The Waterboys reputation as one of the best live bands on the planet and what it is about their performances that makes them so special."Well, they're always different," he shrugged. "We don't repeat the show. We improvise on stage and I like being able to to take a left turn in the music anytime that it occurs to me. I like to do what the music tells me and I get instructions in the moment when we're on stage. I get a little sort of advanced notice in my mind of what the next phrase or the next musical action is going to be and I like to go with those and obey them basically, and it's wonderful to have a band that can deal with that and that likes to improvise themselves. All the band members are able to make up their own parts and to head off into something they've never done before. And I like that. I think that unpredictable quality and the sense of excitement that you get when something unforeseen happens and it's magic... I think that helps bring people back to see us again and again. Also we play with a particular intensity, I know we do. We play with our lives."In the full interview, Mike talks more about what we can expect from the shows and runs us through the changes in the band since they toured here last. We discussed the virtues of having two live keyboard players and how it enhances their sound, as well as most recent album Life, Death and Dennis Hopper and how it was received. We run through the concept and how easily it translated to music, running through two of the albums songs and finding out the story behind them. Mike took us back to the early days of The Waterboys and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, emphasing their musical evolution and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Arguably saving the best till last, we recently spent around 30 minutes in the company of Mike Scott from The Waterboys. Our primary conversation was on Fisherman's Blues, the album that came out on top of our Greatest Scottish Albums poll – and Mike was generous in both his recollections on making the record and some of the frustrations that it created for him. However, with the benefit of almost 40 years of perspective, Mike is now rightly proud of what he and his fellow musicians achieved. Mike also gave us a couple of cracking stories connected to the album, including a world-famous producer cold-calling his Mum's house in Ayr, and reminding anyone who needs reminding of his Scottish heritage. Mike has been a big supporting of our polling and chat on X over the last few months, which has been appreciated by everyone connected to our music channel – and we are looking forward to the release of the Atlantic Rain album and the subsequent Fisherman's Blues Revue Tour ( and we're going too!) The CAT Club presents a long playing vinyl record:TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS (debut album)with special guest JOHN WILLIAMSAt the time Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' eponymous debut was released in 1976, the band were fresh enough to almost be considered punk.Like the Ramones, they shared a love for ‘60s rock and roll. For the Heartbreakers that meant embracing the Byrds as much as the Stones. The result is a classic album with tuneful jangle balanced by a tough garage swagger. When we asked acclaimed producer John Williams to pick his favourite album, the man at the helm of many a fine record by The Proclaimers, The Housemartins, Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott, Petula Clark, The Waterboys and many others, replied instantly: “The first Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers LP.”The result was another great CAT Club gathering with our good friend Jeff Matthews in the interviewer's chair opposite the truly wonderful John Williams.A splendid time was had by all. This event took place on 26th February 2026 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire. This podcast has been edited for content and for copyright reasonsTo find out more about the CAT Club please visit: www.thecatclub.co.ukHappy Trails.

It's Acadiana: Out to Lunch

Some things you don’t think about until they stop working. Then you get a trickle from your shower head. Suddenly, all you can think about is what’s happening with the pipes underground. There’s money to be made in invisible industries. That’s true if you’re pumping water from a well — a technology as old as civilization itself — or driving engineered fluids underground to drill for oil. Christiaan's guests on this edition of Out to Lunch both work in industries that sit mostly out of sight — below ground, behind fences, or buried in technical jargon — but when they’re needed, they’re really needed. Scott Russo is co-owner and water specialist at Waterboys LLC, a water well services company serving residential, commercial, and agricultural clients in Acadiana. Most people get their water from large public or private utility systems. But more than 23 million U.S. households rely on private groundwater wells for their drinking water. That’s about 15 percent of the U.S. population who aren’t connected to municipal water systems and must maintain their own sources. Waterboys, founded in 2020, offers well drilling, pump installation, maintenance, and emergency repair — often with Scott himself answering the phone at all hours. Water is a round-the-clock need, so Scott is always on call. Scott grew up in Kaplan, studied geology, lived overseas and in Las Vegas, and eventually found his way back home and into the water well industry. Zach West is president of Downhole Chemical Solutions, a Lafayette-based company operating in the hydraulic fracturing industry. Downhole plays a big role in the hydraulic part of fracking, providing the tech and engineering needed to get oil and gas out of the ground. The fracking boom revived the domestic oil industry over the last decade. The hydraulic fracturing services industry alone is estimated at more than $40 billion in size in 2025. Downhole is an employee owned company with over 200 people on staff and serves a mix of major and mid-sized energy operators. Zach grew up in central Louisiana in a family of engineers, earned degrees in chemical engineering and business, and returned to Lafayette to build his company. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Brinsley Schwarz in conversation with David Eastaugh  https://brinsleyschwarz.bandcamp.com/album/shouting-at-the-moon https://brinsleyschwarz.bandcamp.com/album/tangled https://unexpectedcd.bandcamp.com/album/unexpected   Legendary British musician and songwriter Brinsley Schwarz returns with a new solo album this Autumn.Shouting At The Moon represents the third part of a trilogy begun with his debut solo release Unexpected in 2016 followed by Tangled, his first album for Fretsore Records in 2021.Founder of the 70spub-rock icons (if icons is not too strong a word!) of the same name, and subsequently Graham Parker and The Rumour, Brinsley's passion for writing and recording reignited in recent years following two albums and tours with that band, as well as duo shows with Parker, resulting in Unexpected. The gestation period for the songs on Shouting At The Moon goes back even further.“I wrote ‘The Chance', ‘Nothing Is What It Seems' and ‘What In The World' sometime between the late 1990s and early 2005,”he explains. “‘Hard To Change' and ‘It's Been A Long Year' were written during 2024 and 2025 and recorded during that time. So you can see a big spread in time of writing and recording;some songs were recorded and were intended for my first solo album. But we had a surplus of recorded tracks and so we could pick tracks based on how the songs seemed to gel together as an entity, as an album.”As with Tangled, Brinsley pays tribute to his friend with a well-chosen cover: “Graham Parker wrote ‘Watch The Moon Come Down' in the late1970s. One of my favourite GP songs.I loved rearranging and recording it.” Key to this revived activity has been producer, engineer and keyboard-player James Hallawell another Parker collaborator, also noted for his work with the likes of The Waterboys and Jackie Leven. “He helped me record my first album Unexpected,”says Brinsley. “We just carried on recording.”

"Wait For Fire Burning" Formed in Oakland in 1985, Legal Reins were comprised of singer/guitarist Danny Benatar, bassist Eden Unger and drummer Tim Freund. They tore up the Bay Area scene, playing show after show and cementing themselves as one of the best live bands around. This is a band who did the work, got in the reps and eclipsed the Gladwellian idea of 10,000 hours. Opening for everyone from Madness to Killing Joke, Legal Reins proved themselves time and again that they could step on any stage and match anyone in terms of power and heart. Their exhilarating blend of sweeping pop epics and punchy hook laden rock and roll brought to mind everyone from The Sound to Echo and the Bunnymen to the Waterboys. After a bit of a bidding war, they signed to Arista in 1987, put out their debut album Please, The Pleasure soon after and then? Well, then things turned the other way. I'm going to let Tim tell you the story, but let me say this: In 1986 I was the music director of KVHS, an all-metal station located conveniently on my high school campus. I was in the habit of sneaking in The Smiths and The Chameleons in between Accept and Venom just to see if anyone noticed--they did, by the way. It was slightly terrifying to be 16 and getting death threats for not playing King Diamond, but I digress. Legal Reins called me up and they were very kind and I loved their music and one time I played them in between Y&T and Armored Saint and this one guy called up and said, very aggressively, Who was that you played after Y&T? I told him Legal Reins and he was quiet for second and then he said, That was pretty good... "A Sober Conversation" Although BC Camplight is the brainchild of the New Jersey born Brian Christinzio, don't be mistaken in thinking his onstage persona is a protective way of distancing himself emotionally from who he is offstage because it's the exact opposit. BC Camplight is actually a way of amplifying those emotions and as a result, it's hard to think of a more emotionally open and accesible artist working in music today. If you're getting the impression that BC Camplight is an open book, that's exactly what he is. With almost ten critically-acclaimed albums to his name like How To Die In The North, Deportation Blues, The Last Rotation Of Earth and his new one A Sober Conversation, Camplight's compositions are sprawling and discursive blasts of unflinching honesty, confessional narratives and unvarnished self-examination. Falling somewhere between The Waterboys' This Is The Sea and Leif Vollebekk's North Americana, over the years, Camplight's music has moved from strength to strength and his new album is perhaps his best yet, which with a body of work like he has, is saying a lot. A captivating blend of sweeping ballads, poignant rockers and ruminating piano-fueled stomp, A Sober Conversation is a stirring song cycle that's filled with anthems for survival. Although the songs are informed by trauma, loss and self-doubt, Camplight's poetic muscle in a peerless flex that makes every number rip through the darkness with the intention of finding a new brand of light. And that's exactly what this album does--more than illuminating the bleakness, it blasts it apart. It's stunning work. BC has toured all over the world, played on Later With Jools Holland, collaborated with members of the War On Drugs, The Last Dinner Party and Sharon Von Etten. What the Riff?!?

Flesh & Blood, the third studio album by Poison, finds the group at the top of their form.  The team of Bret Michaels on lead vocals, C.C. DeVille on lead guitar, Bobby Doll on bass, and Rikki Rockett on drums had been quite successful in the glam metal genre of the mid-80's, and had developed a reputation for a "work hard, play hard" mentality.  While they had a legendary stage presence, they also were plagued with fights both within and outside of the band.  A number of lawsuits in various cities were predicated on Michaels' tendency to get into fights at parties and other events.  Despite these issues - or perhaps because of them - their reputation only grew over time. Flesh & Blood is an album that is more challenging musically than the earlier ones.  The band is toning down their glam metal persona and taking on more serious lyrical themes.  Songs cover a wide range from sex and motorcycles, to struggles with long term relationships, to frustration with the struggles seen in society.  The band would drop the excessive makeup of their earlier career, and found the songs on a more blues-oriented rock.  More piano work is included, with keyboardist John Webster contributing to the album sessions. The result was a success, reaching triple platinum status by 1991.  The album peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 3 on the UK albums chart. This album would be a kind of high water mark for the group, as the industry was moving away from the metal sound of the late 80's and into the grunge sound of the mid-1990's.  However, the group would go on to record and tour into the new millennium, and Bret Michaels would become both a solo act and a celebrity with his MTV reality show "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels."Lynch brings us a look at a somewhat more mature Poison on this week's for today's podcast. Unskinny BopNot every song has deep or significant lyrics.  This hit single from the album started as a nonsense lyric, a placeholder that stuck.  The catchy repetition would make it a crowd favorite at concerts, and it was a top 10, going to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.Valley of Lost SoulsA deeper cut, this song lyrics talk about the life of a rock artist struggling to make it in a place without compassion.  It is a slower piece, but definitely not a ballad.  Life Goes OnC.C. DeVille brought the original draft of this song to the band.  The lyrics were inspired by a girlfriend of DeVille who was shot and killed in a California bar fight, and describe the quest for light at the end of a dark period in life.Something to Believe InThis ballad was the second single released from the album, and went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Bret Michaels dedicated this song to his friend and bodyguard James Kimo Maano who had died previously.  The lyrics reflect the frustration in the failures of society, from poverty, to the treatment of Vietnam veterans, to the hypocrisy of televangelists. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:You're In the Doghouse Now by Brenda Lee (from the motion picture “Dick Tracy”)This action movie based on the comic series from the 1930's starred Warren Beatty in the title role, along with Al Pacino and Madonna. STAFF PICKS:Ball and Chain by Social DistortionWayne kicks off the staff picks with a more alternative rock song penned by a punk rock band from their third and self-titled album.  The lyrics describe a hard luck story of a man who can't escape his difficulties.  It could be about a relationship, a rut in life, or about any vice that holds you down.Way Down Now by World PartyRob's staff pick is the first single from World Party's second studio album, "Goodbye Jumbo."  If you hear echoes of "Sympathy for the Devil," that is deliberate - though the song is much more upbeat.  It reached number 1 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart.  World Party is primarily a one-man project from multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger from the Waterboys.Tie Dye on the Highway by Robert PlantBruce brings us a song off plant's fifth studio album "Manic Nirvana."  The spoken line, "What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000." is from Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm Collective, delivered at the Woodstock festival in 1969 announcing the intention to provide free breakfast to the crowd.  Kool Thing by Sonic YouthLynch closes out the staff picks with a song critical of the over-the-top masculinity of LL Cool J.  It was the first single from their sixth studio album, "Goo."  The track never mentions LL Cool J personally, but references a number of his works.  Chuck D. of Public Enemy provides the spoken vocals to the song.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Mildred Pierce by Sonic YouthWe double up on Sonic Youth as we end today's podcast with their instrumental based on a 1945 film noir starring Joan Crawford.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device.
